LSSC HOSTS HEALTH SEMINAR

There’s a unique event at Lake-Sumter State College featuring 12 local speakers and the theme is “Inciting Innovation.”

Health-related topics include “A New Suicide Prevention Protocol” presented by Ashleigh Husbands, regional suicide prevention specialist with the Florida Linking Individuals Needing Care project. Patrick Rader, a professor of English at LSSC, will discuss managing chronic pain drug free and how he uses the works of late author Hunter S. Thompson to help him manage the severe pain he has dealt with since a near-fatal motorcycle accident in 1999. Brenda Skoczelas, professor of physics at LSSC, will talk about how she has developed ways to test for nerve damage in a patient using the magnetic field. Kallie McDaniel is a 17-year-old graduate of LSSC working on dual bachelor’s degrees in neuroscience and biology for her pre-med track before going to Mercer University to pursue a doctorate in regenerative medicine. She will discuss the extraordinary power and potential of neural stem cells.

Registration is $10 for LSSC students, $20 for faculty and staff, and $30 for members of the community. The event is scheduled from 9:30am-4:30pm Sept. 15 at the Paul P. Williams Auditorium, 9501 U.S. Highway 441, Leesburg.
