Welcome It is with great privilege that I introduce you to the inaugural LIFE+STYLE Magazine Expo Guide. This will serve as your resource manual for the expo that will be held at Lake Sumter State College on Saturday, March 23rd from 10a.m. to 2p.m. Our team here at Akers Media thought it would be great to host an event highlighting what Lake & Sumter Style magazine is all about. We knew this would be a simple accomplishment because all we would need to do is introduce you to our wonderful, vibrant community. For almost ten years, Style has been honored to feature the people, lifestyles, homes, restaurants, entertainment, and local businesses that make Lake and Sumter counties such a great place to live and work. This is exactly what you can expect to experience at the LIFE+STYLE Magazine Expo. What can you anticipate to find at our event? How about live entertainment provided by Hound Dogg Entertainment featuring Eustis native Ashley Baker, Dustin Seymour, and Clermont-based Swamp Cracker? How about our Lake County Chopped cooking show featuring four of the area’s top chefs? (Who will be chopped, and who will be crowned top chef?) How about over fifty vendors, including healthcare providers, jewelry, clothes, food, home sales, car sales, RV sales, home furnishings, home improvement, and much more — all in one convenient location. There is no doubt there will be something for everyone to enjoy. But in addition to providing a pleasant time for all who attend, it is also our philosophy to always give back to our community. So, in this instance, we are privileged to donate a portion of the proceeds from the expo to benefit the Lake-Sumter State College Foundation, a nonprofit organization that aims to deliver quality in education, service to the community, and financial assistance to eligible students seeking a higher education. I also would like to personally thank each and every sponsor and partner for working so diligently with us to create this awesome event. We could not have done it without your support. So please join us as we look forward to bringing you an event that promises to be both entertaining and informative. Bring the entire family out for a great day of fun. Food will be provided by Outback Steak House, Ice Cream Social Club, Monsta Lobsta, and The Crooked Spoon. And as always, we would love for you to share your thoughts about the day and the event with us.

Some days it is truly a struggle to stay on top of our workload, but teamwork always prevails. We are still considered the daily miracle, publishing a daily and two weekly newspapers. With such a large team and all the other countless aspects involved in publishing at this level, it truly takes superb management to make it all work. “Our daily and weekly readers expect their newspapers to be there rain or shine, and we make it our job to deliver them the local news,” Austin says. “They expect nothing less. With the emergence of digital news and social media, we are establishing a strong online presence. We have consistently updated our website since I arrived a year ago in an effort to improve the look and feel, as well as simplify the user experience. We have been rewarded with continual growth of monthly unique visitors to the site.” Happy Birthday to The South Lake Press! The paper started in 1912 and this will mark 100 years of service to South Lake County. The celebration will be a yearlong event. Chef Kevin Robinson
Chef Alex Gandia
Red Sauce, The Villages
Pisces Rising, Mount Dora
An upstate New York native, Kevin Robinson started his culinary career in his family’s kitchen. After attending The University of Hartford and Fulton Montgomery Community College, Kevin moved to South Florida where his cooking career began. Three kitchens, three years, a work ethic, basic knowledge of the fundamentals of cuisine, and a love of food and the restaurant lifestyle is what Kevin took back to New York. Upon his return, Kevin started working as a sous chef at Isabel’s Restaurant. He then became the banquet chef at the Glen Sander’s Mansion and later, executive chef at The Hall of Springs and Saratoga Performing Arts Center. Becoming the executive chef at the Saratoga Golf and Polo Club marked a move into the country club sector where he went on to become the banquet chef and director of catering at Saratoga National Golf Club before returning as executive chef at the Saratoga Golf and Polo Club, which ended the New York chapter of Kevin’s career. For the last four years, Kevin has been the executive chef of Red Sauce, a Villages restaurant that encompasses all of Kevin’s culinary and life experiences. Kevin lives in Oxford with his wife, Tina, and son, Izzy.
Chef Alex Gandia started working in the restaurant business at the age of 12 as a bus boy inside a seafood restaurant in Puerto Rico. He did many odd jobs to earn money, even cleaning the owner’s car. The owner saw Alex’s desire to learn and moved him to a friend’s place called The Lighthouse Restaurant, where a popular chef took notice of Alex and showed him how to prepare and serve delicious Puerto Rican cuisine. He worked for a popular bakery, as well as at several restaurants, hotels, and on catering jobs until the age of 22. Alex then worked with Executive Chef Jorge Nasareo, who did exclusive catering and dinner parties for high profile government officials. In 2001, Alex attended the Universidad del Este, where he was in the first graduating class and received his culinary certification and associate’s degree. After working a number of sous chef jobs in Puerto Rico, he and a friend decided to open a Columbian-style restaurant in Orlando. After a quick stint as an entrepreneur, Alex found his way to Mount Dora where he is now the head chef at the awardwinning restaurant Pisces Rising, serving up delicious cuisine for lunch and dinner.

chefs Chef Derrick Haggerty
+1
Hurricane Dockside Grill, Tavares In 1994, Chef Derrick Haggerty worked as a sous chef at Mission Inn Resort. After a few years, he moved to a French fine dining multiunit property. Later, he became executive sous chef for one of the renowned properties of Hilton Worldwide in Ocala where he served up regional southern cuisine and American favorites at Arthur’s Restaurant. He then worked briefly for Talk of the Town Restaurant Group, and as chef consultant, Derrick brought his expertise to their now famous, award-winning Sunday brunch in Orlando. Soon, he and a business partner opened up Café Atture where they served some of the freshest seafood and game meats. They also baked breads from scratch and served exquisite cuisine, which built a large local fan base and won over travelers near and far. However, after five year, he and his business partner called it quits. He next worked as executive chef at JJ Fins Dockside before transitioning to Hurricane Dockside Grill. Derrick guides the 420-seat, twenty-eight-boat slip restaurant with precision. He is also responsible for staff development, events, and on- and off-site catering. For the past twenty-three years, Derrick has been a session and touring musician as a studio and master percussionist.

Where we came from, where we are & where we are going Growing up in Central Florida, Steve Ellis says it was always easy to find all types of music being played. Sometimes coming straight from his mom’s car radio, he learned to love everything from country and rock to gospel, oldies, and jazz. Now as an adult, Steve believes the love and respect he developed for music helped allow him the opportunity to follow his dream by founding Hound Dogg Entertainment. His career and vision began in 2002 when he started running sound for local bars and artist and created SMS Productions. In 2004, Steve expanded his experience by coordinating shows for clubs and managing artists. This transition provided the opportunity to meet people in the music industry, and he soon found himself doing more bookings and management. In 2010, Steve partnered with Susan Snell, a Lake County native who works closely with local and national artists. Susan books shows of all varieties and handles marketing while Steve focuses on the production and logistics side of the business. More growth within the business provided some firsts and opened doors for new and exciting ventures in 2011. Sold out shows and record attendance at multiple locations provided both Steve and Susan the opportunity to add national artists to their lineup.
In 2012, they experienced a new addition to their family — The Mobile Entertainment Unit. The mobile unit gives the opportunity to provide additional features of entertainment while on the go. In other words: You rock, we roll! The unit can pull up to any event and unload its sixteen-by-fifteen stage complete with sound and lighting. It is perfect for outdoor concerts, pageants, fashion shows, political forums, and more. The unit can also convert to a giant movie screen for movies in the park and Super Bowl parties, and be used for big screen video gaming to add spice to fundraisers and private parties. In 2012, the company also got a makeover with a new look and new name, Hound Dogg Entertainment. The new name and look comes as the company’s direction and growth over the past three years has made it a full service entertainment provider. For more information about Hound Dogg Entertainment, make sure to check out their website, www. hounddogg.com and feel free to attend any of their shows so you can experience firsthand what Hound Dogg Entertainment is all about.

Entertainment Line-Up Dustin Seymour Dustin Seymour’s first memory of music starts at the age of 2 when he would go watch his dad, Greg, and his gospel group, The Jeremiah Singers, perform at churches around the Southeast. He vividly remembers running up to the stage while his dad was performing and demanding to hold the microphone. From then on, being onstage was the only place he ever felt safe. Dustin started performing at the age of 7 and began singing professionally at 10. He attended Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, which is where he picked up a guitar and fell in love with songwriting. Being a lover of the English language, Dustin was infatuated with finding new ways of saying things that people feel every day. He had the esteemed pleasure to sing with the likes of Alan Jackson, Dolly Parton, and The Oak Ridge Boys during his time in Nashville. It is also the time in Dustin’s life where he went from being a singer to being a musician. Though country music and bluegrass are his first loves, Dustin has always been drawn to different sounds. His taste ranges from R&B artists like D’Angelo, The Isley Brothers, Gerald Levert, and Bobby Caldwell to bands like U2 and Radiohead and singer/songwriters like Ryan Adams, Neil Young, Walt Wilkins, and Darrell Scott. Classical music also gave him his love of chords and harmonies. All of these different styles have molded him into a different kind of country musician. Following the path of artists like Ronnie Milsap, James Otto, Conway Twitty, and Lee Greenwood, Dustin has become a maker and performer of what he calls “Country Soul” — country music with something extra that people not just hear, but feel. After returning to Florida, Dustin joined up with an amazing group of guys and formed the band Whiskey Basin. They toured Florida and the Southeast for five years and released an original album titled Seven Sundays. However, Dustin soon realized, as a musician, there was so much more he wanted and needed to say. After walking away from a terrible car accident with only a few scratches, his eyes were opened. He released his new EP, What I’m Made Of, which is a unique blend of country and R&B with honest and straightforward lyrics. These songs, which appeal to a wide range of music fans, take the essence of those genres and bring it back home.

Ashley Baker As a sophomore at Eustis High School, Ashley Baker caught the eye of a casting director and producer who attended the opening night of her high school play in search of talent for their feature film The Old Livingston House. They offered her an audition for the lead female role in their film, and she went on to land the part. During filming, Director Jeffery Lamb told her he had written the lyrics for a song years ago that he felt would be great in the film but had no melody or music. He asked if she would like to see what she could do with it. After developing the melody, Ashely went into the studio with Ravel Kagan, who was writing the score for the movie, and recorded her first single Summer Daze, which was featured in the film. Curious about the potential of Summer Daze, Ashley and her family started sending it out to radio and people in Nashville. The response was amazing! IRCountry Radio Network out of Dallas picked up Summer Daze, and it went straight to number one on their request chart. It has since gone on to be the third most requested song of all time on the network and is still in the Top 25 almost two years later. Following the success of Summer Daze, Ashley and her parents went to Nashville where she met her producer, Peter Young. After helping her pick her next two singles (Bye Bye and What a Day to Shake a Heartache), Peter placed Ashley with some of the best-known musicians in Nashville. This caught the attention of Randy Guidry and Debbie Holley of HolleyGuidry, a well-known management and consulting firm in Nashville, and Al Shiltz and Mike Martinovich with The Consortium Group, which have worked with artists such as Billy Joel, The Judds, Bruce Springsteen, Jason Aldean, Thompson Square, and Band Perry.
Swamp Cracker Swamp Cracker is a Florida-based band that was formed in late 2010 in Clermont. They have a flavor of traditional-style Delta blues mixed with what they call unconventional “Cracker-ized” modern music. Swamp Cracker has been on the South Lake County scene for quite some time and has been reaching into the Orange County area with interest in bringing its visceral blues and modern music sound to the North Lake County areas of Central Florida. The band is made up of four members: David “Lil’ Dave” Washuta, Jr. on harmonica, slide guitar, and vocals; Mark “Merlot Broham” Englund on drums, guitar, and vocals; Paul “The Kid” Frazier on double bass, guitar, and drums; and Adam “A.C.” Samuels on fuzzy and acoustic guitar. It’s been said when Swamp Cracker starts playing, “If you don’t feel it, you have a hole in your soul!” Swamp Cracker is proud to bring you music influenced by life!

Built on a solid foundation Positive changes have been underway at Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC). From a recent name change to expanding degree opportunities, Rosanne Brandeburg, executive director of the Lake-Sumter State College Foundation, can hardly contain the upbeat energy that has had the campus abuzz for the last couple of years. “It’s exciting times here,” she says. For the last year, LSSC has been celebrating its fiftieth anniversary with a host of community events. During this time, the college also changed its name to Lake-Sumter State College to coincide with now offering four-year degrees. In January, Brandeburg said the college began its first four-year degree program in organizational management. In addition, LSSC has linked up with the University of Central Florida (UCF) to begin offering a four-year degree in nursing on campus. “Students can complete the first two years here at Lake-Sumter then go right into their Bachelor of Science through the University of Central Florida without having to go to Orlando,” she says. Making higher education an obtainable, realistic opportunity for local students is something Brandeburg knows quite well as an instrumental part of the LakeSumter State College Foundation. Formed in October 1980, this nonprofit organization has continuously made strides to fulfill its mission to provide excellence in education, service to the community, and financial assistance to qualified students. Brandeburg is proud to note the foundation is made up of employees of the college, so with very little overhead, all the monies raised go directly back into the college to award scholarships to students and provide funds for faculty and staff to purchase much-needed equipment. Last year alone, the foundation awarded 747 scholarships totaling more than $500,000. The foundation
also supported college programs with $300,000. “Our community is so supportive of what we do, and year after year, we are just so appreciative,” she says. Currently, the foundation is looking to raise $30,000 for its DirectConnect partnership with the University of Central Florida, the Johnson Foundation Scholarship, and other area community colleges. The matching program will help build scholarships for DirectConnect students attending any of the partner colleges and an endowment to fund scholarships for DirectConnect students who graduate from a partner college and attend UCF. To support the foundation, people can give in various ways. Whether it is a check or making estate plans to leave a lasting legacy in the event of someone’s passing, the opportunities to give toward someone’s education are endless. Brandeburg expresses great gratitude for the funds provided through the first Life+Style Expo. “We know there are so many worthy causes so we are very thankful for this opportunity,” she says. “An education is so important because of all the things that can be taken away from you, no one can take away your education.”

We help you become your best self. “I was never blessed with what I believe are the appropriate size breasts for my body. To make matters more stressful, I was left with a much smaller chest after breast-feeding my two children. This became a concerning body image issue for me. After conducting extensive research on breast augmentation and different plastic surgeons in the area, I decided to consult with Bosshardt and Marzek Plastic Surgery Associates.” “The staff and doctor earnestly answered all my questions and concerns, and they also educated me on the pros and cons of my planned surgery. They took their time in discussing everything I wanted and needed to know about my procedure. I immediately
felt very comfortable with the staff and facility. They encouraged me to take time in my decision and made sure I explored every possible alternative before deciding to undergo breast augmentation.” “Choosing to have Bosshardt and Marzek Plastic Surgery Associates perform the procedure was the best choice I could have made. I am very happy with the results of my surgery, and it has also jumpstarted my confidence into a healthier lifestyle. I would highly recommend the practice to anyone who is interested in enhancing their outer body.” — Lindsey Thompson

Even with over twenty years’ experience as an executive in the construction business, I still think about what my mentor told me when I was just getting into this business. He said, “This is not a construction business; this is a people business.” He went on to tell me that you have to help others get what they want in order to be successful. Success will not always be measured in dollars but more so in the satisfaction of helping others. My career has been built around this principle. Whether it is people that you work for, or those working for you, this is paramount to your success. The best days in life have nothing to do with money but have everything to do with people and the gratification of seeing their dreams realized.
