Youth, lead the way

his month’s issue takes me down memory lane.

In my 20s and 30s, I was an ambitious, determined, go-getter. I started my career in newspaper sales before discovering my true passion as a magazine salesperson.

I formed meaningful, longlasting relationships. I created opportunities for businesspeople. I learned to be an optimist by closing deals others deemed impossible. I learned that in sales the only limits are self-imposed.

In 2008, the years of hard work paid big dividends and my dream career became reality when I became publisher of Healthy Living magazine. I’m still living that dream today. Today, I am publisher of Lake and Sumter Style, the magazine I helped launch as a salesperson in 2004.

In this issue, we present our annual “40 Under 40” list. For me, it’s exciting because I see a younger version of myself in these young whippersnappers. They’re con dent. They’re ambitious. They maintain a cando attitude. They create and seize opportunities. They have that special spark that all successful businesspeople share.

It’s not just their success that makes me proud. I’m equally thrilled that many are lifelong residents of Lake and Sumter counties who decided to launch their companies or seek employment in their hometowns. Our communities become much stronger and prosperous when we can retain homegrown talent.

I hope that our “40 Under 40” feature provides inspiration and additional motivation for high school and college students to achieve their dreams. If your hearts are in something then by all means, pursue it. Ignore doubters and naysayers. Don’t take no for an answer. Value mentoring and professional development opportunities that arise. Look at adversity as a chance to foster your strengths and your growth.

In closing, I would like to wish everybody a very happy 2023. Just typing that makes me realize how fast time goes. It seems like yesterday when 2000 rolled around and we were waiting to see if the technology apocalypse known as Y2K would materialize. Thankfully, it never did. Mindfulness A Calm Oasis:

f you’ve ever wanted to catch your breath and clear your head, mindfulness can help. Mindfulness techniques ground us and help us become more resilient to life’s challenges.

Amy Roberts, LCSW and Mindfulness Meditation Teacher at the Robert Boisonneault Oncology Institute, says that developing a beginner’s mind is key. “It’s living in the moment and being aware of the moment you’re in,” she explains. “Being aware of your reactions, your thoughts, your body, but in a way that’s patient and trusting. A childlike curiosity.”

Being non-judgmental is central to mindfulness. “You’re noticing you’re having some reactions or some feelings, and going, ‘Huh. That’s interesting,’ Roberts says. “Not judging it as right or wrong, or good or bad, but being curious about your feelings, emotions, or

responses. It’s really extending a kindness inward, but also to those around you.”

Roberts points to studies showing that mindfulness improves memory and concentration. Mindfulness can also decrease stress, anxiety, and depression, while improving quality of life and one’s ability to cope. Citing an American Society of Clinical Oncology study, she says, “After an 8-week course, these concepts, tools, and mindset that you’re learning stay with you. The skills you learn show long-term improvement. It’s not just a temporary release.”

Roberts offers Friday meditation sessions on Zoom and will give a weekly mindfulness class starting on Tuesday, January 17. Both are free, but pre-registration is required for the class. To learn more about mindfulness programs at RBOI, call 352-732-0277

Growing a Positive Experience

Growing a Positive Experience expands our daily moments of happiness. These moments can include a child’s greeting, sounds in nature, a stranger holding a door open, and more. Growing them means using all our senses to absorb the experience. “This is something you’re doing anyway throughout the day,” Roberts says. “But instead of pushing it aside, you’re learning to let it in and let it really resonate with you.”

Keeping a Gratitude Journal

Keeping a Gratitude Journal helps provide balance for when times are tough. “Every morning or evening, write down a few things that happened that day or that you have that day that you’re grateful for,” Roberts says. It can be something simple like, “I really love my hair color today,” or, “I have a roof over my head.” Then think about why you are grateful for those things and what they mean to you. Gratitude doesn’t mean ignoring what is difficult in life. Rather, it can help provide an emotional anchor for when life feels overwhelming.

MEET A VILLAGER Art Hodge is a hot air balloon pilot who takes his hobby to unprecedented heights.

The Super Bowl was very super indeed for two local athletes who made the most of their opportunity to play on football’s biggest stage. In Super Bowl XXXV, 1994 Wildwood High School graduate Ron Dixon returned a kicko 97 yards for the New York Giants’ only touchdown. Incredibly, Dixon also had a 97-yard kicko return in the Wild Card game in the 2000 postseason. Dixon’s two kicko returns for touchdowns set an NFL record for the most kicko returns for a touchdown in a postseason campaign. In Super Bowl 50, 2008 Leesburg High School graduate linebacker Danny Trevathan recovered two fumbles and led the Denver Broncos with eight tackles.

Most Lake Countians are familiar with AdventHealth Waterman, UF Health Leesburg Hospital, and South Lake Hospital. However, for 66 years, a hospital speci cally for children existed in Umatilla. The Florida State Elks Association opened the Harry-Anna Home for Crippled Children in 1933. Children with orthopedic diseases and disabilities came to the hospital to undergo rehabilitation and were treated at no cost for families. The unique hospital closed in 1999 due to medical advances.

HISTORICALLY BLESSED The Tavares Union Congregational Church is said to have held services for almost every religion throughout its history. The Union Congregational Church is a historic Carpenter Gothic style United Church of Christ building located at 302 St. Clair Abrams Ave. in Tavares. The congregation was organized in 1885 and the church was built on land donated by Major Alexander H. St. Clair-Abrams, the founder of Tavares. The building was expanded in 1988. A year later, it was listed in “A Guide to Florida’s Historic Architecture” published by the University of Florida Press.

Be kind. I think that’s something I try and remember because oftentimes, we forget that everyone has feelings. We all go through obstacles in our lives, so we should learn to respect and love others.

My future plans: I am still young and so I have time to change my mind, but as of right now I would love to pursue sports broadcasting. Also, I would love being able to travel the country or go to cosmetology school and become a pageant and wedding makeup and hair artist. You never know what the future may hold.

ot air balloons have been a huge part of Art Hodge’s life for more than 30 years.

Art started crewing for a friend in Michigan while in college, and because his pal couldn’t

“To be quite honest, I didn’t know if I really wanted to go for a ride,” Art says with a chuckle.

After graduating, Art became a physical education teacher, but continued crewing. When his friend vowed to teach him the ropes, there was no turning back.

In 1985, Art secured his private pilot’s license, and later that year, his commercial license. The two also began piloting for RE/MAX in the Detroit Metro area—a gig that

After that, Art worked for Renaissance Balloons, but upon retiring from teaching, moved to The Villages and left ballooning behind.

“I no longer had balloon equipment of my own since ying for RE/MAX, so I thought, ‘This is it. I’m done,’” says Art.

Fast forward about 10 years to May 2021 when a phone call from his son Johnny (also a hot air balloon pilot) changed everything. Art agreed to serve as Johnny’s crew chief for a show in Finley, Ohio. And when he was able to use his tethering and wind expertise to guide Johnny through bad weather, the piloting bug bit him again.

“I’ve got some ballooning still left in me,” Art thought, before reinstating his license.

Art calls the event a pilot’s dream, primarily because of the special shaped balloons, plus the challenge of steering them.

In Albuquerque, the two ew alongside one another for the rst time. Art piloted ‘Duma the Cheetah’ and Johnny manned ‘Splash the Penguin.’

“It was a very special day I’ll never forget,” Art says.

Today, Art, 70, is counting the days to his 10-year anniversary as a gate attendant so he can retire and spend more time with his girlfriend … and in the air.

He’ll o er occasional paid rides to support his hobby, but for the most part, ballooning is something he does for the sheer love of it.

Granted, there are risks. Art says there are power lines and trees to contend with, you never know where exactly you’ll land, and that each landing is somewhat of a controlled crash.

“Ballooning becomes a way of life and questions like, ‘What’s the weather?’ and ‘When can I y again?’ are always on your mind,” Art says. “It’s relaxing, and it’s hard work, but I enjoy the interaction with people and can’t wait to devote more time to it.”

A small incision is made along the tragus of the ear following the natural curvature of this area. The incision will run under the earlobe and behind the ear, to ensure minimal visibility of the scar once fully healed. WHAT MAKES ME PASSIONATE ABOUT MY CAREER: a complicated surgery, my mom—who’d struggled with hip and knee problems since childhood— could only walk short distances with a walker. With help from a massage therapist, she eventually graduated to walking with a cane, regaining control and confidence in her life. I thought it was amazing to be able to help another person in that way. After graduating, I took over my mom’s treatment. To be able to give back to the woman who adopted me and gave me a beautiful, lovefilled life was one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.

MY GREATEST CAREER ACCOMPLISHMENT: The design and implementation of a clinic located within the emergency departments I was working in at the time that provided monoclonal antibody/IV therapy for very sick COVID patients during the pandemic. With this treatment, we were able to keep many patients out of the hospital and safely at home, which made space for the facility to care for those who needed admission.

Taylor Mitchell is living large these days thanks to a life-changing decision to downsize her body.

A new narrative

aylor Mitchell knows a thing or two about transformation and change. The Leesburg native has experienced it up close and personal.

incarcerated, leaving Taylor to care for their son Steven Jack on her own.

“My husband had a drug addiction problem and got sentenced to prison in August 2020. I was determined to lose weight. I wanted to look good for my husband, for myself, and to be healthy for work,” says Taylor, 27.

Adding to her concerns was the fact that cardiac and health issues run in her family.

“My mom had her rst major heart attack at 38 and my sister got a pacemaker at 32,” Taylor says.

“I’d struggled with weight my whole life. After I had my baby in October 2018, I was in deep depression. I ‘ate my feelings’ and gained almost 100 pounds,” recalls the 2013 Leesburg High School graduate who is an o cer at the Federal Corrections Complex in Coleman. That wasn’t her only challenge. Her husband Joshua Mitchell was

Determined to change her destiny, Taylor—in July 2020—began working out with personal trainer Tyrell Rachel at In nity Fitness in Fruitland Park.

“Tyrell told me I had to change the narrative if I wanted to not have the same issues as my family. I want to be as healthy as I can,” says Taylor, who began working out faithfully and signi cantly changed her diet.

Over a period of 18 months, Taylor lost 52 pounds, dropping from a

size 24 down to a size 10.

“I didn’t see progress until a few months in, but once I saw pounds come down, I got serious,” she says. “Tyrell is super proud of me and always gives me great words of advice.”

Taylor usually works out ve days a week. She added running to her routine to prepare for an obstacle course challenge required by her employer.

Since her husband’s release, Taylor says he’s had a good support system helping him in recovery, and the couple can now work together on themselves.

She’s learned rsthand that when life looks darkest, that’s when you need to keep going. As Taylor says, “It gets easier, don’t give up!”

Age: It’s just a number

Exercise benefits a body whether you’re 19 or 99.

t’s never too late” is a common cliché, but it isn’t quite true. Especially when it comes to exercise.

Is it ever too late to start exercising? That’s the question I am going to discuss. Perhaps the rst question to answer is, “Why exercise at all?” I could list references for what I am about to say, but they would ll this page. Indeed, they would ll this magazine, and then some.

The data is irrefutable. If there is one thing that rises above all–a true magic bullet if you will–it is that exercise improves your chances of a long, healthy, happy life.

Simply put, exercise bene ts everything. Weight loss? Blood

pressure? Risk of heart attack and stroke? Mood? Depression and anxiety? Stress? Sleep? Memory and intellect? All benefit from a program of regular exercise. And I could go on and on.

So how much exercise should you do? Studies support a minimum of 150 minutes to 300 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise per week.

What constitutes moderate? That’s when you can still speak in complete sentences while exercising. Examples: walking at 3 mph, bicycling at less than 10 mph, and playing doubles tennis. Vigorous exercise would be anything where you cannot say more than a few words without pausing for a breath.

What type of exercise should you do? What you do is not as

important as just doing something. Moving is better than not moving.

That said, it is best to exercise in a way that provides bene ts to cardiovascular health, strength, and exibility. A good example would be to combine walking, jogging, or cycling with gym workouts that include resistance or weight work and stretching. Variety also makes exercise more interesting and enjoyable.

Now back to when to start. Unless you have one foot in the grave or are in such extremis that any exertion poses a serious threat, you can start an exercise program and derive bene ts from it right now.

Many successful older athletes who function at a high level credit starting an exercise routine late in life. So, check with your doctor and get started!

CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT CATARACT SURGERY?

Due to age, most everyone will develop cataracts during their lifetime. The procedure is similar to refractive lens exchange in that I swap out the cloudy natural lens of the eye, or cataract, with a new artificial lens. For patients who have cataracts in both eyes, the procedures are performed separately.

DO THESE SURGERIES COME WITH ANY DOWNTIME?

We ask patients to take it easy with physical activities for a week or so, but not much more than that. With cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange, patients are seeing better on the second or third day. We also ask them to go light on physical activity for a week. We will ask all surgical patients to not swim in a pool for a few weeks because we consider it dirty water and we want them to avoid risk of infection.

HOW CAN THESE PROCEDURES IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR YOUR PATIENTS?

Before the surgery, they would have to wake up in the morning and immediately reach for their glasses. That is an issue that frustrates them. During the coronavirus pandemic, their glasses would get fogged up when wearing masks. Also, patients were getting headaches when looking at the computer through their computer glasses. After the surgery, they enjoy a lot of freedom in their day-to-day activities. Many of my patients participate in tennis and other

activities, and now that they no longer need glasses, they feel like they are performing better.

WHAT ARE THE REACTIONS OF YOUR PATIENTS WHEN THEY REALIZE THEIR VISION HAS BEEN IMPROVED?

I had a patient tell me she never realized that leaves had so many details. Another patient told me how she appreciates being able to read labels and price tags when she’s out shopping without having to pull out her glasses. Simply put, they love being rid of the burden of eyeglasses and contact lenses. Eyeglasses can become easily broken or lost. Now, they no longer have to worry about those things.

What is the difference between Skilled Home Health and Private Duty?

killed home health utilizes Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists and Medical Social Workers. If someone needs Skilled Home Health services, a referral from a physician is required and the patient must be homebound.

Private Duty is non-skilled services that utilize Certified Nursing Assistants, Home Health Aides and Companions. Private Duty does not require a referral from a physician.

Skilled services include specific orders from the patient’s physician, to care for a specific condition. This could include wound care, managing chronic illnesses, therapy services and post-surgical care, just to name a few. The frequency of the visits depends on each specific patient and the needs/orders required. The medical professional performs the specific skill and then leaves the home to go to the next patient. They do not provide non-medical day-to-day activities or tasks.

Private Duty non-skilled services can provide clients with tasks such as: bathing, dressing, ambulating, transfers, toileting, laundry, transportation to Doctor’s appointments, grocery shopping, meal preparation and medication reminders. Private duty can also include light housekeeping. The frequency of the visits depends on the client’s needs and requests. Lake Centre Home Care requires a 4-hour minimum and can provide up to 24 hours each day. Frequency is based on client requests.

Skilled services are covered by most Medicare plans, and some Private Insurances.

A helping hand

Dr. John Williams, Jr. brings the latest knee replacement technology to The Villages.

r. John Williams has an outstanding personal assistant by his side when performing knee replacement. The assistant is, in a sense, a second set of eyes.

But this is no human. It’s a robot named ROSA.

ROSA is a robotic platform that takes a personalized approach to each patient’s knee replacement using a three-dimensional model created from special x-rays. The x-rays are matched to a patient’s knee to help deliver accurate placement of implants with less softtissue dissection. The robot’s computer technology, camera, and optical trackers assist Dr. Williams to control and move surgical instruments.

“This is state-of-the-art technology, and we’re excited to use it from a surgical perspective,” Dr. Williams explains. “Thanks to this technology, we can be more precise with the alignment and placement of implants. For patients, this leads to a more natural feeling of the knee.”

Dr. Williams has been using the ROSA Knee System at his practice, Advanced Orthopedics Institute, for one year. In the past quarter, he has performed more surgeries using the ROSA system than any physician in Central Florida.

The procedure comes with numerous advantages.

“For patients who undergo knee replacement using ROSA, we can safely

send about 40 percent of them home on the same day,” he says. “Others may require a one-night hospital stay.”

In addition, recovery times are shortened thanks to a multi-modal approach that includes pain control medication, nerve blocks, and physical therapy. That’s great news for residents of The Villages who lead active lifestyles.

There’s no place like home

ave you ever had surgery in a hospital? If so, you know how difficult it is to get a good night’s rest.

HOW IT WORKS

When you join, you will be assigned your own special identification number. Simply call the Senior Watch telephone operators each morning and tell them how you feel.

If the Senior Watch operators do not hear from you, they will attempt to call you. If you fail to answer the telephone, the Senior Watch will contact one of your neighbors or a relative, if possible, to check on you.

If contact cannot be made with you in a timely manner, a Deputy Sheriff will be dispatched to your home.

s a young girl, Jackie Watkins loved cooking with her mother as mom made full-course meals for the family of seven, as well as making all the appetizers, main courses and desserts when they hosted holiday dinners and get-togethers.

Jackie always looked up to her and knew it’s what she wanted to do one day.

“It was in my blood,” Jackie says. “I used to help my mom bake because that was my favorite part. She was such an amazing person to look up to and I knew that I wanted to be just like she was.”

At age 15, Jackie got a job working in the kitchen at a restaurant in Fort Myers where she grew up. After high school, she attended the Culinary Art Institute in Fort Lauderdale and moved to New York City, where she attended The Art Institute of New York City for baking and pastry.

“Pastry is really where I wanted to be,” Jackie says. “I became a pastry chef in several restaurants in New York and New Jersey. But I missed my family, so in 2006, I moved back home.”

In 2007, she settled down in Umatilla, where her title went from pastry chef to mom when she had two girls back-to-back.

“I’m the stay-at-home mom,” Jackie says. “I tried doing custom cakes on the side, but the most important thing was to raise my girls.”

But now that Jackie’s daughters are 12 and 13 and becoming more independent, she felt it was time to return to the culinary world.

Lightly grease and dust a 9-inch cake pan with granulated sugar. In a bowl, combine chocolates, then cream and melt in microwave for Set aside to cool. Add orange juice and half the zest. Continue whisking until Add in vanilla and cooled chocolate Pour into prepared pan and bake in preheated oven at 325 degrees for approximately 45 minutes. Don’t worry if you notice it begin to crack while baking. Remove from oven Top with chocolate ganache and refrigerate overnight,

*To serve, run a knife along the edges of the pan. You can place a hot damp towel on the pan to help release the cake from the pan. Flip onto serving plate and serve with whipped cream.

Melt chocolate and cream together in the microwave until smooth. Add reserved orange zest and mix until combined.

Combine ingredients and whip until stiff peaks form.

FROMTIPSTHE BAKER

PEAR COBBLER

INGREDIENTS :

3 lbs of pears

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 lemon juiced

2 tbsp cornstarch

1/2 tsp cinnamon powder

1/4 tsp ginger

*You may use any variety of pears. I used a combination of Bartlett for its hardy “pear” flavor and acidity and Red Anjou for its sweetness.

TOPPING INGREDIENTS:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup pancake mix

2 sticks butter sliced into tabs

2 tsp brown sugar

DIRECTIONS:

Peel and core the pears and slice into chunks. Place in a bowl and add remaining pie ingredients. Stir until the pears are nicely coated. Pour into a 9x11 baking dish. Combine the all-purpose flour and pancake mix for the topping and place it on top of the cobbler mixture. Top with butter slices and sprinkle brown sugar on top. Bake in preheated oven at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes. Pears should be tender and top should be golden and bubbly.

FRANGIPANE

TART:

DOUGH INGREDIENTS :

2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted

1/2 cup powdered sugar

1/4 tsp salt

1 tsp zest, orange or lemon

1/2 sticks unsalted butter, cubed

1 large egg yolk

1 tsp vanilla extract

FRANGIPANE FILLING INGREDIENTS :

1/2 stick unsalted butter

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 cup almond flour

3 large whole eggs

1 tbsp all-purpose flour

1 tsp vanilla extract

1/2 tsp pure almond extract

1/2 tsp lemon or orange zest

1/2 cup plus 2 tbsp raspberry or strawberry jam

1 pint strawberries

DOUGH DIRECTIONS:

Lightly grease 10-inch tart pan with removable bottom. In a food processor, combine flour, sugar, salt and zest. Pulse until combined well. Add the cold cubed butter and pulse until you don’t see any pieces left. Do not over pulse as this will create heat and cause the butter to melt. Add in the egg and vanilla. Pulse until dough starts to clump together. Turn the dough out onto the countertop and knead together until smooth. Place between two pieces of parchment paper and roll a little over the size of your pan. Transfer to pan and press in. You will have excess dough. Just cut around the edges with a knife. Chill in the fridge for one hour. Once chilled, place a piece of parchment paper on dough and fill the shell with dry beans or baking weights. Blind bake in a preheated oven at 375 degrees for 20 minutes. Remove the beans and parchment paper and bake uncovered for another 10 to 15 minutes or until lightly golden. Set aside to cool completely.

FILLING DIRECTIONS:

Combine the butter and sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer with a paddle attachment. You can also use a handheld mixer. Beat on medium speed until

creamy. Turn to low speed and slowly add the almond flour and alternate with eggs until evenly combined. Add remaining ingredients until well combined.

ASSEMBLY DIRECTIONS:

Place the tart pan on a baking sheet and spread jam on the bottom of the shell. Fill with the frangipane filling. Slice washed and dried strawberries and line the filling with the halved side up in ring formations. Melt 2 tbsp of jam and brush on top of strawberries. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 55 minutes, until the filling has risen and reached a golden-brown color. Dust tart with powdered sugar. Serve with ice cream.

Doggone delicious

Relish an American food phenomenon at Coney Island Drive-Inn.

t’s always fun to search for the top dog.

That is why I eagerly anticipated my inaugural journey to Coney Island DriveInn, a Brooksville staple since 1960 that recently opened a location in Wildwood.

Cities across the U.S. claim ownership of special hot dog styles, and Coney Island Drive-Inn has added several of those popular styles to its menu. Every dog has its day, and at this restaurant, the famous Chicago Dog is still having its day. I quickly gured out why it’s the restaurant’s best seller.

A Chicago-style hot dog is not only a culinary creation, but also an aesthetic one. A steamed, poppy seed bun cuddles the juicy all-beef hot dog, which is coated with neon-green relish and garden-fresh tomatoes running the length of the bun. Sport peppers are

neatly nested atop the hot dog, while a dill-pickle spear lays parallel to the meat. And there’s that squiggly line of yellow mustard.

Just one bite. That’s all it took to realize Michael Jordan, Harrison Ford, and Robin Williams weren’t the only good things to come out of the Windy City. The ingredients danced together, forming a delicious blend of avors. Biting into the sport peppers was a real treat, as the juice squirted open and oozed throughout my mouth, providing a nice level of medium heat. With the diversity of toppings, each bite provides a di erent avor pro le, ranging from sweet and sour to bitter and savory.

Of course, some locals may be turned o by a hot dog created by those darn Yankees. Never fear. Coney Island Drive-Inn o ers hot dogs with a bit more Southern air. One of them is the Gator Dog, featuring alligator meat,

smoked sausage, swamp relish, and spicy mustard.

Another option is Norm’s Big Dog, the restaurant’s second-most popular hot dog. This one intrigued me so much that I couldn’t resist ordering it. It is topped with loose meat, chili, and cheese. It also comes with two other ingredients I never imagined on a hot dog—slaw and onion rings. No, that’s not a typo. Honestly, the golden-brown onion rings looked so delicious that I considered picking them o and eating them individually. Ultimately, I left them alone and was pleasantly surprised how well they blended with the other ingredients. Who would’ve thought?

Here’s an important tip. The hog dogs are served in white boats. Continue sliding a small portion of the hog dog out of the boat with each bite. Like a big dummy, yours truly lifted the entire hot dog out of the boat and

ended up leaving a mess on the table … and my shirt.

Don’t fret if you’re not a hot dog connoisseur. The menu o ers plenty of other options, including chicken wings in a variety of avors, salads, loosemeat sandwiches, sh and chicken sandwiches, and char-grilled burgers. Fridays attract many people for the popular sh box, which features 8- or 10-ounce white sh with french fries and coleslaw. Panko-crusted shrimp and fried clams can be added for an additional charge.

These classic American favorites are enjoyed in an environment reminiscent of 1950s diners. A vintage gumball machine with colorful gumballs is placed near the counter, while old license plates from di erent states hang on the wall. Guests will also see

outstanding. The food was served within ve minutes, the service was stellar, and I learned that hot dogs can be enjoyed in a variety of styles.

With the restaurant’s steady stream of new and regular customers, it’s apparent a hot dog revolution is sweeping through Wildwood.

am always on the lookout for a “proper” pint of Guinness and heard I could nd one at McGrady’s in Sawgrass Grove.

Lucky for me, Patrick Graner was behind the stick that day and when the creamy elixir was put in front of me, I stayed for two.

Graner, 47, originally from Allentown, Pennsylvania, didn’t start tending bar right out of school.

“I wasn’t that great of a student and was over high school, so I went to work in a warehouse driving forklifts for a distribution center.”

He soon became bored and uninterested.

“I was constantly late for work and couldn’t gure out what I wanted to do with my life.”

Then, inspiration came from an unlikely source.

“My mom and dad suggested that tending bar would be a good t because I was pretty social, and it was a way to get me focused on something that would let me work with the public.”

He took bartending classes and found work right away.

At 21, he started at a famous Philly cheesesteak joint called “The Brass Rail,” but later realized it wasn’t a good “ t,” which any veteran bartender knows is crucial to success.

He bounced around, taking jobs in private clubs and other watering holes until he landed a gig at TGI Fridays, the holy grail of corporate training.

“I wanted to be surrounded by the best and that company is truly focused on the bar.”

In 2005, he moved to the Village of Belle Aire with his grandad. His parents also lived there and worked for Sumter County.

Graner has worked at several bars and restaurants in The Villages, creating close ties with others in the business, but also with his valued guests.

“I have two sets of extended snowbird friends who take care of my dog anytime I want.”

Mike and Maureen, and Al and Annette have become surrogate parents for his 9-year-old dog Pugsley, and he even brings his mom Anita for holiday dinners.

“I’ve acquired a new family and now we have a new tradition.”

I’m sure Pugsley is the happiest of them all.

Stepping up my game

No resolution resolutions ... and no excuses.

ew year, new you.

Yeah, well, I wish it were that easy.

I don’t know how many years I’ve spent making, and breaking resolutions. And not to let myself o the hook, but that’s where the saying ‘life happens’ comes in.

Take my most common New Year’s resolution which goes something like, “This year, I’m going to eat healthier, exercise more, and lose weight!”

Well, my overall goal is to do that. Realistically, I know it takes work, time, and money for a gym membership, cute workout out ts, and, ideally, a personal trainer who knows what they’re doing and who will keep me accountable.

With kids to help keep on their feet, bills, car and house payments, groceries, dogs to feed, gas, and other unexpected expenses, you know, life again… who can a ord all that?

Still, I’m not giving up. But instead of putting so much pressure on

myself and inevitably experiencing disappointment, I’m changing my wording to, “I will try my very best this year to lose the 25 pesky pounds I gained during the pandemic by eating right and simply exercising way more.”

Yes, you heard me right. I gained 25 pounds during the pandemic. And although my weight has remained steady, I haven’t lost the extra pounds due to not being able to motivate myself back to my pre-pandemic workout routine.

Next, “I will try my very best this year to keep in better touch with my family and friends.”

I say this because around May of 2022, I sent one of my daughter’s high school graduation announcements to a friend and former co-worker I hadn’t talked to in many months. She didn’t respond, and thinking back, I should’ve immediately tried contacting her, but life again.

I just thought, “Hmmm, that’s strange, but it’s ok, one of us will call

each other soon, and we’ll catch up like we always, always do.”

Well, imagine how oored I was when the announcement was returned to me unopened, and with a note saying she’d died nearly a year ago. I just stood there and cried, and to this day, it haunts me.

At one point in both instances, I blamed the pandemic for getting us used to going months without doing things we were used to doing before. But that’s it, I’m moving forward and getting back to a few prepandemic norms.

Not getting to the gym regularly, and not picking up the phone to talk with people I love and who I haven’t seen or heard from in months, is totally on me.

So, hello 2023, and with that, “I will try my very best this year to majorly step up my e orts!”
