“They built the pool to perfection, and the finished design was better than we ever imagined. The superintendent was willing to answer all our questions before, during, and after the project. Although we have been swimming in the pool for three months, we can still call him with any questions. Wiseman Pools went above and beyond, and the pool is functional and works like we want it to.”

Wiseman Pools is a family-owned-and-operated, licensed residential and commercial swimming pool builder with an extensive portfolio of projects. From the small—fountains and in-ground spas. To the large—million dollar installations with multiple pools and spas. Our customers, large and small, demand a quality swimming pool for a fair price. And we deliver.

Dynamic duos

Taking care of each other while taking care of business.

ou’ve undoubtedly heard the golden rule for married couples: never mix business with pleasure. There are numerous reasons people feel they should keep work separate from private life. They believe that mixing business and love can be a recipe for marital trouble, that going into business with a romantic partner could lead to power struggles, disagreements over business decisions, and even relationship burnout.

Often, that’s exactly what happens. Sometimes the business survives, but the partners end up apart. Many times, both the business and relationship fail.

Of course, some couples who work together manage to avoid job-related di culties that test their love. They end up closer than ever.

I know rsthand that couples can nd happiness and success while

working together. Shortly after I married Doug, we launched Akers Media Group in 2008.

In this month’s issue, we’re proud to introduce you to couples who not only mix business with pleasure but grow stronger and closer in the process.

Our inaugural “Power Couples” feature spotlights partners who share the same passions in life and have no problem developing an appropriate work-life balance. They champion each other through good times and bad, deepen their understanding of each other, and learn to truly appreciate one another.

You’ll read about a retired couple who work harder than ever to raise funds for a local food pantry and meet life partners who operate a blueberry farm. We’ll also introduce you to a couple that is in uential in the local political scene, as well as a couple that contributes to charitable causes.

I have a special place in my heart for everyone who has experienced the struggles of working alongside a

spouse. Personally, Doug and I have endured plenty of highs and lows, but through it all our love for each other has strengthened. Working with him has been one of the greatest honors of my life.

On a nal note, I would like to wish our faithful readers a very Merry Christmas. Speaking of Christmas, we have included a gift guide in this issue to help you nd the perfect gift for a loved one. Please shop local. Our economy is sluggish, and many small businesses have not fully rebounded from the coronavirus pandemic. This is a great opportunity for you to help them brave di cult economic times.

God bless you all and may you have a wonderful start to 2023.

Sincerely, Kendra

FROZEN IN TIME

December 2022 marks 128 years since the rst of two freezes devastated the citrus industry in Lake County/Central Florida. The rst freeze, on December 29, 1894, froze oranges in area groves. The second freeze on Feb. 7, 1895 was so intense that sap inside tree trunks froze, causing them to snap so loudly that they sounded like gunshots. Most of the trees died. It would be approximately 30 years before the citrus industry recovered, only to be devastated again by freezes in the 1980s.

Empowering youth: My passion for helping youth began when I was at UF in 2017. There were a lot of kids that couldn’t a ord tickets to the games so we went around to schools and handed out tickets. I always did community service things and my professor suggested I start my own organization. Now I run it on our campus at Hope International Church in Groveland.

My passion: Helping kids, especially in the foster care system. I visit a group every week and talk about di erent stu and have them write down their goals in life and talk about how to achieve that.

Saying I live by: There’s more to life than football. A professor told me that one time and it has stuck with me. Even though I’m retired, there’s so much I can do for the community.

Love of music:

trumpet in 6th grade as a member of the Clermont Middle School band. In 8th grade, I learned how to play both the clarinet and guitar. During my senior year, I taught myself to play piano, and particularly enjoy playing “Minute Waltz” by Frederic Chopin. For me, the piano is therapy, taking my mind o school and stress.

Memorable Boy Scout experience: In 2019, I went to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. It was a rigorous experience because we learned how to survive under harsh conditions. We also learned how to build signal towers and small sleeping shelters. We had no access to the outside world for two weeks.

2. Exercise

Regular daily activities and aerobic exercise of 30 to 60 minutes can lower the risk of heart disease by increasing nitric oxide levels which are vital in promoting vascular health and repair of damages within the arteries.

3. Adopting a heart-healthy diet

5. Regular cardiovascular health screenings

• Blood pressure screenings

Hypertension is a major contributing factor for heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure.

• Type 2 diabetes screenings

A: Despite the amazing advances in cardiovascular medicine over the past decade, heart disease remains the leading cause of death, accounting for 23.5% of all deaths for both men and women. This is the case in the U.S. and worldwide. Heart disease is used to describe several conditions, but the leading cause of heart disease is related to the buildup of plaque in the walls of the arteries. As the plaque accumulates, the heart arteries continue to narrow, ultimately leading to a heart attack, heart failure, and death.

To reduce the risk of dying from heart disease, a person may protect their heart health by following these medically proven recommendations:

1. Smoking cessation

Chemicals and additives in tobacco can damage the heart and blood vessels. However, the risk of heart disease drops precipitously in as little as a day after quitting.

Examples of a heart-friendly diet include:

• Vegetables, beans, fruits rich in antioxidants

• Lean meats and fish

• Low-fat or fat-free dairy

• Whole grains

• Healthy fats such as olive and canola oil

• Mediterranean diet

Examples of foods to limit:

• Alcohol

• Saturated fat found in red meat and full-fat dairy products

• Sugar and other processed carbohydrates

• Salt

4. Maintaining ideal body weight

• Maintain body mass index (BMI) of 25 or less to reduce heart attack risk. BMI is calculated based on height and weight.

• Waist circumference of 35 inches or less for women and 40 inches or less for men has been associated with significant reduction of heart attack risk.

Diabetes is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke and peripheral arterial disease.

• Cholesterol screenings

Oxidized LDL cholesterol is a major contributor to plaque formation in the arteries.

Cholesterol screenings should begin at age 20 or earlier if there is a family history of premature heart disease or death.

John and Constance Christian

John and Constance Christian are no strangers to the spotlight. As co-pastors of the Christian Worship Center, which has four locations locally, the couple has been working on projects together ever since they met at Lake-Sumter State College.

“We actually grew up in the same area of Leesburg but didn’t meet until college,” John says. “Both our parents were pastors, so we were raised to serve. We do almost everything together.”

John and Constance started the Men of Distinction program, followed by the Kids of Distinction daycare, which is about to open its fth location.

They also have a background in real estate.

“We like to bounce ideas o each other,” Constance says. “I’m more analytical, he just takes action, and how we are able to balance each other out is because we can come together and talk about it to make a well-rounded decision.”

In 2003, John became a Leesburg city commissioner. He also served ve terms as mayor.

The couple raised four kids together and are now loving being grandparents.

Constance says the secret to their marriage and working relationship is mutual respect.

“I know I drive him crazy sometimes, but I think we understand that we are two di erent people, and we respect that about each other,” Constance says. “It just works for us.”

Dustin and Jamie Lowe

Dustin and Jamie Lowe have come a long way since meeting and graduating from the University of Florida—Dustin with a degree in nance, and Jamie in event management.

Afterwards, Dustin returned home to Groveland and purchased 15 acres of land adjacent to his family’s historic citrus farm. Jamie moved from Orlando to join him when the two married in 2004.

About ve years later, they planted their rst crop of blueberries and started Lake Catherine Blueberry Farm.

“We were two of the original blueberry farmers in South Lake in a market that was de nitely rising,” Dustin says.

After two years, when the corporate Marriott property that employed

Jamie closed, she went from part-time to full-time event coordinator at Lake Catherine. And the rest is history.

Husband and wife have been working side-by-side running the blueberry farm for 12 years, taking it from a commercial operation to a u-pick/event and seasonal festival family-friendly venue that includes a catering/mobile bar business, and, in honor of their children, DJ’s Lemonade Stand and Ava Grace’s Country Store.

In August 2021, they purchased Kim’s Cabbage Patch in Clermont.

And Dustin and Jamie aren’t nished growing their business. Coming soon: an entertainment district/town center at the Highway 19 frontage, complete with a stage, amphitheater and urbanist development planned community

that supports a ‘live, work and play’ concept.

Community involvement is obviously important to the Lowes. Jamie is a member of the South Lake Chamber of Commerce executive board, South Lake Business Leaders, and Groveland’s strategic planning committee. Dustin serves on America in Bloom, a city beauti cation committee. Both support the Greater Clermont Cancer Foundation (GCCF), Buses and Backpacks, and Charities Across South Lake.

Despite their tight schedules, Dustin and Jamie remain as close as ever.

“We work well together. My strengths are his weakness, and my weaknesses are his strengths,” Jamie says. “We also know exactly what each of our roles are and respect that.”

John and Mary Ann Mobilian

John and Mary Ann Mobilian are determined to make a di erence.

Residents of The Villages since moving from Ponte Vedra Beach in 2017, the Mobilians are serious about helping those in need.

John was an international airline pilot for 30 years and Mary Ann is a retired clinical pharmacist.

In 2018, John was elected as Fruitland Park city commissioner. That same year Mary Ann began fundraising for Beyond the Walls food pantry, which serves Fruitland Park and surrounding areas.

“Eighty percent of historic Fruitland Park is at poverty level. A lot of families struggle even with both parents working,” says Mary Ann. “There’s no reason for charities to not have enough supplies when so many people in The Villages are willing to help.”

The Mobilians helped organize a “quarter auction” social event in which attendees bid in quarters on donated gift baskets, with all proceeds going to the food pantry.

“It’s a labor of love for John and me. We believe this is what Jesus wants us to do,” says Mary Ann. “I am so grateful to the friends and neighbors who have been so generous in their support of Beyond the Walls. Last year we raised $40,000!”

The 2022 auction on October 14 was a festive, sold-out evening with 250 attendees. The event raised

Walter and Barbara Price

They rst met at a Tampa mall. He worked at Radio Shack. She worked inside an ice cream shop. One day, he worked up the courage to enter the shop and scoop her up. The rest, as they say, is history.

Walter Price, Sr. and Barbara Price have been married 46 years.

They’ve built a marriage, a business, and a family. They’ve also dedicated countless hours to build Lake County, where they’ve happily resided for 42 years.

Many know the Prices as public servants. Walter is a Tavares vice mayor/councilman. Barbara is chairwoman of the North Lake County Hospital Board of Trustees.

Their community service, however, extends beyond those roles. Together, they’ve served as a cubmaster and den mother for Boy Scouts, been involved in Little League, and contributed to organizations such as Fellowship for Christian Athletes (FCA) and Life’s Choices Women’s Clinic.

“We both love serving the area because it gives us a sense of pride,” says Walter, a real estate appraiser and owner of Price Appraisal Group in Tavares. “We love the small-town charm and friendly people.”

The Prices are also active in the political scene. Walter is chairman of the Lake County Republican Party. Barbara is state committeewoman for the Lake County Republican Party and president of the Lake Federated Republican Women’s Club.

“Through the Lake Federated Republican Women’s Club, we deliver forever books to 4-yearold children in pre-kindergarten,” she says. “It’s so fun to see the looks on their faces when we give them a book because many have never had one.”

The Prices have two children. Both graduated from Tavares High School.

Alex and Katelyn VonHartman

Realtors Alex and Katelyn VonHartman shared a profession before they shared a life; Alex for 12 years and Katelyn for three.

They also shared a love for Mother Earth. On their honeymoon, they discussed how polluted certain areas in Florida had become, including their hometown of Leesburg.

They both did their best to “recycle, reduce and reuse,” but realized that wasn’t enough, so they started The Terra Mater Foundation.

“Terra Mater means Mother Earth in old Greek,” Alex says. “During the pandemic, it really opened our eyes to how much trash there was, and especially plastics weren’t being recycled, which is very harmful for our environment.”

That inspired them to start the nonpro t to organize group clean-ups and partner with local recycling companies to properly dispose of waste.

“We want to bring awareness to people because some people just don’t know,” Katelyn says.

Alex and Katelyn have worked together to create an opportunity to keep our environment clean and healthy. They hope to continue to grow their non-pro t and nd innovative ways to reuse the plastics into something viable instead of sending them to the dump.

exactly what he wanted to accomplish. Fast forward eight years and it’s clear his company continues to exceed expectations when it comes to helping customers through what is oftentimes one of the most stressful times in their lives—moving.

“We knew we weren’t going to change the industry, but we knew we could change the industry for the area,” Travis says, adding that his dad, also a business owner, instilled in him a set of values that have led him to success every step of the way.

Travis says it’s those values that have made Quality Moving Services so suc-

multiple trucks, and years of proven dedication traveling cross-country making sure peoples’ belongings arrive at their new homes, safe and sound.

“My dad said, ‘everything around here is done with a handshake, and you really nish your work,’ and what he meant by that is that you never say something that you are not going to ful ll,” Travis explains. “I took his advice and that’s really what gave me the energy to start my company and continue growing it into what it is today.”

Despite a few bumps in the road, the coronavirus pandemic, and his original partner stepping down in his ght against cancer (which he won), Travis is at the top of his game.

He credits help and support from like-minded managers Turner “Junior” Long (his brother), and Ryan Peterson. He’s also grateful for life lessons that have served as motivators through the years.

“If I could give anyone a piece of advice in business or in life, it is that we are all human. We are all going to make mistakes, but I truly believe it’s what we learn and do from those mistakes that change us as a person,” Travis says. “I’ve lived by that for as long as I can

remember and feel that learning from trial and error throughout my life is how I’ve gotten to where I am today.”

TRAVIS SAYS HE ALSO CREDITS OFFERINGS THE COMPANY IS COMMITTED TO AS FOLLOWS:

• Free estimates

• No deposits

• Licensed and bonded for local and out of state jobs

• Loading and unloading of pods and rental trucks

• Same day complete moving locally

• Residential and commercial moving

• Every move completed by a 2-3-person crew

• Full-time employees

• All packing and moving materials available

• Available 7 days a week

• Family-owned and operated

• Full valuation protection insurance on all goods being moved at no additional charge

Most importantly, Travis says the company uses only top-of-the-line equipment for every job, big or small. He explains that doing so not only makes the job easier, safer, and more e cient for its crews, but brings added peace of mind to every customer.

“I pour the money back out to the business to make sure we always the best equipment for the job because we are dealing with stu our clients have collected, items that mean something to them, and that they’ve spent their hard-earned money on to buy,” Travis says. “For example, our hand truck dollies are all aluminum with non-marking rubber tires. You can go out and buy $20 dollies with air balloon tires, but they’re going to leave marks on the carpet, so we’d rather spend more to ensure that doesn’t happen.”

The company also has its own top of the line moving trailers, custom-built

to make sure furniture is going to be safe during transport, he adds.

In addition, Travis is proud to say that his Quality Moving Services team extends the utmost in customer service and understanding, plus his movers always listen and adhere to customer needs and requests.

“Moving is one of the most stressful times in people’s lives, and that’s pretty much proven, so doing anything we can do to help take that stress away is our ultimate goal,” Travis says. “That’s why we hands-on train our movers to really live by the motto that customer service is our number one priority.”

With that, Quality Moving Services o ers many packages, such as a full-service option that includes packing, loading, moving, unpacking, and set-up, or any part of the moving process a person may need help with.

Crews also specialize in moving items like gun safes, large pieces of furniture, baby grand pianos and more, they accept local and long-distance jobs, can haul vehicles, and do in-store pickups of furniture and other items, as needed.

No matter the size of the job, Travis says his main interest is making every customer’s moving experience as pleasant and seamless as possible.

Junior and Ryan say Travis’ strong work ethic inspires and reminds them of the positive impact the services they provide can potentially have on people’s lives.

“Moving-wise, there’s no limit to what we can do. As for customers, they are our number one priority 100 percent of the time. Moving is stressful as it is, and we understand how disappointing it could be to end up with things in the wrong place,” Junior says. “We try very hard to hit the nail on the head as far as getting everything exactly the way a customer wants it so when they arrive at their new place it feels just like home.”

Junior also admires Travis’ passion for creating a sense of closeness.

“Travis always says Quality Moving is just like another baby to him,” Junior says. “He tries to create a family-like atmosphere with employees and has inspired us to bond with customers during our time moving them.”

“So even if at the beginning of the day we’re strangers, customers feel like part of the Quality Moving family by the end,” he adds.

Ryan says he feels satisfaction knowing customers are left with a great sense of relief at the end of their move. He is especially proud

054 / LAKEANDSUMTER STYLE .COM DEC'22

because his son Rylan is one of the company’s movers.

“After completing any job, seeing our customers smile and hearing them say how satis ed they are, or how much they appreciate our care and hard work, is greatly rewarding,” says Ryan.

Additionally, Ryan says he admires Travis’ customer-driven mindset, plus appreciates the con dence and mentorship he’s a orded him and Rylan.

“Working for Travis has brought me great opportunities and advancements. I also appreciate that Travis will go above and beyond to ensure

our customers are completely satised with every detail of their move,” says Ryan.

Personally, Travis says he started the company to provide for his family and now that it’s complete, his four sons and stepdaughter inspire him to be the best he can be. Additionally, the trust customers put in his company is what he says keeps him wanting to give Quality Moving Services his all.

He says though he sees himself at the company’s helm for many years to come, he hopes to eventually pass the torch to his children and brother.

“It just gives me joy when our customers appreciate the job we’re doing and when they are satis ed with how we’ve handled their belongings,” Travis says. “I feel like It’s not just a job or a business, but that I’m truly making a di erence for some of these people, and I’d like that family legacy to live on.”

LIFE’SA

Lots of delicious food and sunshine await at Ski Beach Bar & Grill. PAID PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

“I’VE VISITED DIFFERENT LAKES IN FLORIDA, BUT THIS AREA IS LIKE NOTHING ELSE.”
—RICK WORMUTH, RESTAURANT MANAGER

has always been a hub of activity thanks to its lush landscape, picturesque bridges, stunning lakeside views, and abundance of wildlife. Now, visitors can enjoy all that and get their bellies full at the same time.

Ski Beach Bar & Grill opened at Venetian Gardens in November. There’s even better news. The restaurant is the creation of Randy and Sue Keuntjes, who also own Eaton’s Beach Sandbar and Grill in Weirsdale.

Those who have eaten at Eaton’s Beach are aware of its funny catchphrase, “3 C’s and a little BS.” Translated, that equates to Cajun, Creole, Low County, Barbecue, and Spanish.” The restaurant’s late chef, Dave Del Rio, melded these five styles to create a unique and tasty combination of flavors from Florida and Louisiana.

Randy is bringing the same delicious food and cooking style, which is known as “Florisiana cuisine,” to Leesburg.

“Our food has a little heat to it and a Louisiana kick to it,” says Chris Redding, kitchen manager. “The food is seasoned well, and we concentrate more on flavor than spiciness.”

Popular Florisiana-style dishes include the Ybor City Gumbo, the Cajun Sweet Fried Chicken, the Charleston Shrimp Platter, and the Bronzed Red Fish. Other favorites include a Florisiana Sirloin, glazed salmon, shrimp creole, a Mahi sandwich, and a variety of burgers and salads.

Of course, guests will have a difficult time passing on the restaurant’s award-winning shrimp and grits, which consists of tender shrimp and Andouille sausage in white wine cream sauce topped with applewood bacon and fresh chives.

“People absolutely love our shrimp and grits,” says Stacy Muilenburg, server-trainer at the restaurant. “I have worked at Eaton’s Beach for nine

watch seaplanes land gracefully on Lake Harris and enjoy a majestic view of a sunset. On a cool night, they can cozy up to the two firepits located on the restaurant’s beach area. Live entertainment will be offered on the tiki patio on Fridays and Saturdays.

Two full-service bars—one on the tiki bar and one on the inside—serve up drinks with catchy names like the “Shark Attack Martini,” “Barefoot Skier Martini,” and “Ship Faced.”

The restaurant’s interior pays homage to the days when Leesburg had a professional ski team in the 1940s. Along one wall are 26 pairs of skis representing the 26 founders of Ski Beach.

“When there was a ski team back in those days, they had a locker room where they stored skis, tow ropes, and life jackets,” says Melissa Virnig, general manager. “They referred to it as the beehive locker room. By

else,” says Rick Wormuth, restaurant manager who has 30 years of experience in the industry. “As a staff, we look forward to meeting our customers and serving them a unique style of food that they will definitely enjoy.”

Beautiful inside and out

The grand opening of KB Home & Garden is a home décor dream come true in The Villages.

hen Kevin Burke has a dream, he makes it come true.

After a long stint in landscaping, he envisioned opening a garden center where people could get anything they needed to beautify and landscape their yards. In 2010, KB Landscape Supply opened its doors to do just that in Wildwood.

Fast forward 12 years to October 2022, and another one of Kevin’s dreams came true with the opening of KB Home & Garden at Magnolia Plaza, located at 2192 Everglades Lane, The Villages.

Kevin describes the shop as a garden center, but with a twist since home décor and gift items are also sold there.

“It’s like the one-stop garden centers up north and It really ts the end picture of what I’ve been wanting to

bring to this area for years,” Kevin says. “And based on the reactions I’ve witnessed; I think people are pretty excited about it too.”

“I had this one lady walk in and all she said was, ‘BINGO!’”

Tori Sanders, the general manager at KB Home & Garden, describes the shop as: “A garden center with a whole lot more,” and with those words, she hits the nail right on the head.

Outside, customers will nd a large selection of seasonal owers, smallmedium-size indoor and outdoor plants, all homegrown in Kevin’s own nurseries, plus decorative pots, small fountains, and other gardening and landscape supplies.

“Most everything we have here, we grow ourselves, and that’s important because people are going to get a better-quality plant than anything you can get at a box store,” Kevin explains.

“Everything we put out is high quality, healthy, and beautiful.”

Inside boasts the holidays with a large selection of delightful and amazing Christmas décor that immerses you into the holiday spirit immediately. Everywhere you look you will discover something fascinating and unique that gives your home a festive feel or nd that special gift for someone on your list. Additionally, you will be able to nd a nice selection of gifts, accents, and decorative items for any occasion year-round.

“People are not expecting to see all they see when they walk in and their reactions have been very positive,”

Kevin says. “Personally, I am very happy to be here and satis ed because this not only gives people a place to go and get everything they need to enhance the outside of their homes, but the inside now, as well.”

Riding in style

ibrant colors and bold patterns.

Sparkling jewelry. Gorgeous designer swimwear. Glittering shoes, bags, and dresses.

You’ll nd it all inside Prominent Fox Boutique. But there’s nothing as bright as the smile of owner Leigh Ann Berry. Since opening her company in 2017, she has developed a true passion for helping women look and feel their best by o ering a vast selection of stylish clothing and accessories.

Now, she is excited to announce some changes that will make her company shine even brighter.

Leigh Ann is relocating Prominent Fox Boutique to 11247 U.S. 301 at Preston Place in Oxford. The store is expected to open in December. That’s a point of pride for Leigh Ann, a lifelong Sumter County resident and 1998 graduate of Wildwood High School. “Oxford is where I was born and raised, and it’s also where my store originated,” she says. “So the store is going back to its roots. I’m also excited to be closer to The Villages because I can o er residents clothing and accessories that they won’t nd anywhere else.”

Leigh Ann is also expanding her product

line to include clothing for men and children, as well as home decorations and gifts. That includes dish towels, signs, candles, seasonal items, rugs, blankets, robes, slippers, and more. She is also o ering petrelated items like bandanas, collars, and leashes.

“I will also assemble gift baskets,” she says. “I want this to be a onestop shop where people can nd whatever they want and not have to go anywhere else.”

There’s something else that makes Prominent Fox stand out. The company is represented by three generations. Leigh Ann works alongside her mother, Brenda Shrewsbury, and her daughter, McKenzie. They’ve traveled to markets in Los Angeles, Dallas, and Atlanta to o er the latest in clothing trends and fashions.

“Since we have three generations, we can better cater to customers by o ering styles that people of all age ranges like,” Leigh Ann says.

Prominent Fox o ers the best of both worlds: The personable service of a family-owned company and the great selection of hard-to- nd clothing. Customers leave here with a new, exciting style all their own.

HOLIDAY Shopping Tips

Tis the Season to Shop Safely! The holiday shopping season has arrived! Here are a few safety tips that will help you avoid falling victim to criminals who are out there looking for opportunities to steal your gifts…and your joy!

Always try to shop with others…remember the old saying “There’s safety in numbers!”

Try your best to SHOP DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS. If shopping after dark, only shop in shopping centers that have well-lit parking areas and make a mental note of where you parked.

ALWAYS BE AWARE of your surroundings.

LOOK AROUND and under your vehicle before approaching it.

KEEP YOUR KEY fob in your hands while walking to your car in busy parking lots. This will allow you to push the panic alarm in the event you are approached by someone suspicious.

Simply appearing to BE ALERT AND AWARE of your surroundings is oftentimes the very best deterrent for would-be criminals.

LOCK YOUR VEHICLE and don’t leave items and gifts visible inside the car.

Battle lines are drawn

On Dec. 28, 1835, nearly 200 Seminole Indians ambushed 107 federal troops in Sumter County. Only three U.S. soldiers survived the battle that became known as Dade’s Massacre and sparked the Second Seminole War. The Dade Battle Reenactment will show how battles were fought between U.S. soldiers and Seminole warriors.

Today, the talented Lake County resident who moved to the area from Cocoa Beach in 2014 makes a living in the creative eld, spinning magic with words and music.

Although she always loved performing, it was at Cocoa Beach High School that a special teacher helped Laura free her musical passion.

“I sang in many choirs over the years, but the most in uential person was my African American chorale teacher who taught music in a unique way, teaching me to sing from my heart,” recalls Laura. “I was a pretty shy kid and singing brought me out of my shell.”

No one who knows Laura St. John now would describe her as shy. This multitalented performer doesn’t restrict herself to one

After performing on cruise and dinner cruise ships as a singer/dancer, Laura stayed closer to shore once children came into the picture.

She is married and the mother of two grown children.

After her cruise ship work, Laura became the lead vocalist for a 9-piece band. She also performed in several duos, including “Laura & Sunny,” with her daughter. (www.lauraandsunny.com)

Whether singing at a wedding, sporting event or concert, the power of music fuels her soul. “Music is a universal language,” says Laura. “We can’t live without music; it makes us healthier.”

She nds that being an entertainer involves reinventing herself. She’s had both laughs and success with her costumed characters, whether delivering a singing telegram, or making school appearances as the Alphabet Chef, with playful presentations that teach children about healthy eating.

Laura used the power of words to convey important messages about bullying and digital awareness in her two children’s books, “Don’t Judge a Bug by Its Cover” and “The Christmas House.” (Visit www.BooksbyLaura.com to get a signed copy.)

“We are all connected in some way. I try to make those connections through words on pages or in songs,” says Laura, who was recognized as Entertainer of the Year by the Clermont Awards Program. For more information, visit www.laurastjohn.com.

‘‘The Thursday Murder Club’’

story about four retirees turned amateur sleuths and a detective determined to stop them.

oopers Chase, Britain’s first luxury retirement village, has rolling acres of green fields, gleaming lakes, old-growth woodlands, state-of-the-art gym, hot tub, and pool.

In addition, it offers a variety of clubs and social groups for its 300 residents, including Joyce, Ibrahim, Ron and Elizabeth, amateur sleuths in their seventies who meet every Thursday to discuss long-unsolved murders. Their goal: to bring killers to justice.

Joyce is a widow and former nurse. Ibrahim was a psychiatrist who knows he saved the lives of many people. Ron, a former trade union leader and all-round rabble rouser, is the skeptic of the group. Nobody seems to know about Elizabeth’s past.

When Tony Curran, the builder of Coopers Chase, is found bludgeoned in his kitchen, the club swings into action to solve their first live case. The only clue is a mysterious photograph of three men left by Curran’s body.

Detective Chief Inspector Hudson is assigned to the case and intends to thwart the efforts of the club. Elizabeth has other notions and is intent on getting policewoman De Frietas assigned to the case as Hudson’s associate. It seems the club members have far-reaching connections.

It’s not long before other bodies start showing up. As the club endeavors to crack cases, we don’t always grasp how their unusual exploits work. Nevertheless, it is abundantly clear that the club is not just a gaggle of doddering old fools. They certainly have their quirks, but we come to love them and delight in their uniqueness. We also learn that the quartet has definitely had their share of sorrows and regrets.

Richard Osman, an avid reader of crime fiction, is a well-known British writer, producer, and television personality. Cancer and the Holidays

he holidays can be stressful, even without cancer’s added challenges. COVID-19 and other health concerns can raise stress levels even further. Wendy Hall, LCSW, offers these ways to cope.

1. Keep things simple. The side effects from cancer and its treatment can ramp up your fatigue and lower your immunity, so focus on just one or two traditions that are special to you. If you are social distancing from friends and family, consider modifying some traditions, like visiting online rather than in person. Some websites can also let you post audio and video greetings for loved ones to enjoy.

2. Shop online. Large crowds can be stressful in the best of times. Cancer can make those crowds harder to navigate, and COVID-19 can still increase infection risk even for people without health issues. Shopping online has become the answer for many. Most stores have great customer service staff available to help. Due to the pandemic, some neighborhood stores may now offer home delivery. Gift cards can also be bought online.

3. Love is priceless. If money is tight, heartfelt, homemade gifts and “Thinking of You” notes go a long way to let someone know they are in your thoughts. If you are social distancing, you can send a digital creation or greeting.

PAID PROMOTIONAL FEATURE
102 / LAKEANDSUMTER STYLE .COM DEC'22

4. Ask for help. People will want to know how you are doing. Consider sharing that information via email or in a video greeting. You can ask a close friend to share the details if doing so directly makes you feel uncomfortable. If you are gathering in person for the holidays, asking guests to bring a dish to share can keep your work load from becoming overwhelming.

5. Learn and accept your limitations. If you visit others, be aware of the physical stress that entertaining and traveling puts on your body. Use discretion when selecting which holiday invitations to accept. If you go out of town, consider staying in a hotel instead of in a family member’s home. This may help you relax and restore your energy and give you more control over your space and time.

6. Remember the true meaning of the holidays. Finally, don’t concentrate on what may be missing or is different from past holidays. Try to focus on the present moment and enjoy your celebration in whatever form it takes. Remember what the holidays are truly about: a time for renewed friendships, being thankful, and sharing with others. We are here to help. New Year’s Resolutions

ew Year’s resolutions are a tradition. So is breaking them. Here are some suggestions on your way to a healthier you in 2022.

1. List the changes you wish to make and prioritize them. Focus on the top one or two rst. As you achieve a goal, move down the list.

2. Don’t make your goals overwhelming. Break up a big goal into smaller goals that are realistic and achievable. It is great to plan to lose 100 pounds, or run a marathon, or accomplish some other lofty goal. Instead, try to lose 1-2 pounds in the next week or get out to run or walk ve days a week, building up time and distance slowly. Do this and a

year from now you can look back and marvel on how far you have come.

3. Set goals that are speci c and de ned. The idea behind any goal is to know when you have achieved it. Example: instead of saying I’m going to get healthier, say I resolve to exercise 30 minutes a day. The better de ned the goal, the more you will be able to pursue it.

4. Have a deadline for each goal. Having a speci c date in mind helps. For me, knowing that I have a 5K, 10K, or some other distance to run on a particular date allows me to plan my preparation accordingly. Deadlines are not written in stone; you can adjust them if necessary.

5. Have fun. Reward yourself as you achieve milestones along the way. If it

is tedious, boring, or a drudgery, you won’t do it.

6. Start now. Putting things o until some vague future “perfect” time is just another way to fail. Do something every day that will move you toward your goals.

7. Find like-minded others to join you, encourage you, and hold you accountable. Sometimes it does take a village to be successful.

8. Start by getting a checkup and an OK from your doctor before starting an exercise program or radically di erent diet.

Dramatic changes occur when you consistently build on many, small cumulative changes over time. Get to it!

Teen beats cancer while winning weightlifting championship.

oy Wiggins, 17, of Lake Minneola is an inspiration to everyone around him. While maintaining a weighted 4.8 GPA, he tops his class in weightlifting, is a defensive linebacker for the Lake Minneola Hawks, earned superior ratings playing the saxophone in band, throws shot put in track, and works a part-time job at Papa Johns.

On top of all that, Roy is a cancer survivor. Last year, he went through treatment for a rare case of lymphoma located behind his left ear and intertwined through his nerves and salivary glands.

“Thankfully we caught it in the early stages,” Roy says. “At rst, we thought it was just a cyst, so I nished out football season. But after more testing, I had to go to a specialist for head and neck surgery.”

Roy was unable to train for three months but was determined to return to his weightlifting team and win the championship.

In February, he earned the title of Florida High School Athletic Association

2-A State Individual Weightlifting Champion.

“Each match I kept achieving my personal best, ending with 355 pounds on bench press and 305 on clean-and-jerk,” Roy says. “It’s the fastest I’ve ever progressed.”

Roy also received the Hawk of the Year award for football and is a member of the National Honor Society. He hits the gym twice a day and rotates between cardio, weightlifting technique, squats, and bench.

Roy lives with his grandparents, who are his biggest fans.

“He is just an amazing young man,” his Grandmother Dona Dorton says. “He refuses to fail and has set that example. During his treatment, it was a very scary time. You never want to hear the word cancer, but I swear he didn’t blink an eye. His only comment was, ‘Let’s get rid of it.’”

Roy is working hard so he can a ord medical school, a goal he set while undergoing treatment.

“After what I went through, I want to go into the healthcare eld and become a neurosurgeon,” Roy says. “I hope to one day go to Duke University. They have an amazing medical program.”

Until then, Roy will be getting regular checkups, dominating the line in football, and looking for his second weightlifting championship in the spring.

The grieving process is different for

thought they’d gotten through it and were going on with their lives. Then something happens to trigger that grief years later and it’s like it

Saunders tells people to expect grief to reappear, particularly around birthdays, anniversaries, and other key dates.

In 1969, psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross developed the theory of the Five Stages of Griefô, which suggested that people experience the following stages after a loved one dies: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.

Dr. Saunders agrees that those are the most common stages of grief, but he’s found that not every person goes through all of them.

Grief can vary greatly depending on who

“When my great grandfather died at 91, that was the happiest funeral I’d ever been to. He’d lived a long happy life of meaning and accomplishment,” recalls Dr. Saunders. “It can be a lot harder if someone dies young or unexpectedly and you don’t feel they had the ability to live out their lives.”

MIND DEC'22 LAKEANDSUMTER STYLE .COM / 111
Good

WHAT NOT TO DO

When you’re grieving, it’s normal to want to “do” something to feel better.

Dr. Saunders cautions against impulsively making major decisions–such as moving to another city or state.

“This happens a lot when a spouse dies, but it might not be the right decision,” he notes. “Ask yourself, ‘Am I running away from my grief?’ You can pack up and move to another city, but you’ll take your grief with you.”

Dealing with material possessions of your loved one can also be a challenge. In the event of a child’s death, this aspect of grieving can be especially painful.

If you’re conflicted, Dr. Saunders recommends boxing items and putting them in storage rather than immediately disposing of them or donating them. You can go through things later when your grief isn’t so acute.

Rearranging the furniture in a loved one’s room or the space you shared may also prove beneficial.

EMOTIONAL HEALING

Everyone has their own grieving timetable, but there comes a point when functioning returns and you get back to some sort of normal routine. You’ll realize–perhaps with surprise–that you can make it through the day without feeling overwhelmed.

“There’s a shift that happens. You stop focusing on the negative part and start remembering and talking about the good times with that person,” says Dr. Saunders. “It doesn’t mean you’re not sad they’re gone. You may always feel that on some level, but you’re not overwhelmed by it anymore.”

WHAT ABOUT NEW RELATIONSHIPS?

Common advice to those who have lost a spouse is not to start a new relationship until they’ve “processed” their grief. There’s sound wisdom behind that guidance, but again, there’s no “one-size- ts-all” program for moving through grief and nding love again.

“Some people just do not have the capacity to be alone, so they jump back into a new relationship right away. That may or may not be a good idea,” says Dr. Saunders.

“I try to encourage people not to be in a hurry to get in a new relationship. Give yourself at least a few months to process it and think about what you’re doing. You don’t want to be looking at the person you married out of impulse a couple years later and asking yourself, ‘What have I done?’”

He points out that many men, especially from older generations, feel very lost since their spouse was their caretaker and primary source of love.

HELP YOURSELF HEAL

It’s important to take as much time as you need to grieve, whether alone or with others. Self-care and awareness are crucial.

“For some people, going back to work is therapeutic. Focusing on their routine can be very helpful,” says Dr. Saunders, adding that other people may need to take additional time o from work.

“Be mindful of how you’re feeling and ask, ‘Is grief impacting my day-to-day functioning?’ If it is, this is telling you, you need more time,” he says.

Connecting with friends and loved ones can be healing.

605 West Montrose Ave, Clermont

DO YOU NEED HELP?

Saunders finds that many people go through an intense grieving process in the first three to six months, which is completely normal.

IT’S TIME TO GET HELP IF:

• Intense grief persists past six months.

• You feel overwhelmed.

• Grief is affecting your ability to care for yourself or your family, or your ability to work.

“There’s no shame in getting counseling or psychotherapy. This can be very helpful,” Saunders says.

W. Steven Saunders, Psy.D. Licensed Psychologist www.CentralFloridaPsychology.com
MIND

“Sometimes joining a grief group can be very helpful. Not feeling alone is so important, which is why a group can help,” says Saunders.

GRIEFSHARE

Many people turn to GriefShare, a support group for those who’ve lost a loved one to death.

GriefShare is a 13-session program that promotes discussion and provides videos with mental health professionals, including counselors, psychiatrists, and psychologists.

“It’s clinically-informed, but Christ-centered and biblically based,” explains Sam Hodges, president of GriefShare and its parent organization, Church Initiative, Inc., based in Wake Forest, North Carolina.

GriefShare has expanded greatly since it began in 1998. Ninety- ve percent of its groups are in the U.S., but GriefShare exists in many other countries. From August 2021 through August 2022, there were 14,929 GriefShare groups worldwide.

According to Hodges, one of the biggest bene ts for attendees is the realization that their grief experience is normal and they’re not alone.

“A lot of people are hesitant to talk about how grief is a ecting them. One of the biggest reliefs people have is nding out, ‘I’m not going crazy!’ When they start coming to GriefShare, they nd out they’re okay. It’s helpful to be with others who are going through the same thing,” says Hodges.

OPEN BIBLE LUTHERAN CHURCH IN OXFORD HAS OFFERED TWO GRIEFSHARE SESSIONS A YEAR FOR THE PAST SEVEN YEARS.

Open Bible Lutheran Church Pastor Mark Schulz says his church in Oxford has o ered two GriefShare sessions a year for the past seven years. He notes that some of the highest attendance occurred during the pandemic.

“I was taken aback by how di erently people grieve and how long they do. For some, it’s years. For others, it’s shorter,” says Gene, adding that having nobody to con de in was the toughest part of losing his wife.

Buon appetito!

hef Amadeo Avila remembers the excitement surrounding the 2017 grand opening of Rodello’s Italian Restaurant, located at 26736 U.S. Highway 27 in Leesburg.

The Italian menu he and business partner Raudel Torres introduced was brought to life beautifully by Chef Amadeo, and much to the duo’s delight, garnered rave reviews.

Fast forward ve years and Chef Amadeo’s dishes are still creating a buzz. The only di erence now is that he is also the restaurant’s owner following Raudel’s retirement.

Chef Amadeo says he is proud to be celebrating ve years serving the Leesburg community, and grateful for every customer, near and far, who’s ever eaten at Rodello’s.

“We have people coming in from throughout Leesburg, but also from The Villages, Ocala, Orlando,

and we couldn’t be more thrilled going into our 5th year,” Chef says. “I love cooking for our customers and I love hearing about what they enjoy eating.”

Rodello’s General Manager Lina Hernandez says people love the restaurant’s classy ambiance, highlighted by beautiful hand-craved wood tables and chairs imported from Italy in the main dining room.

But it’s the delicious salads, appetizers, entrees, and desserts that keep them coming back in for more, she adds.

“We always aim to please our customers. We want them to enjoy their time here and leave satis ed, happy and full,” Lina says.

On the Rodello’s menu are a wide variety of classic Italian dishes from Chicken, Eggplant and Veal Parmigiana, pizza, calzones and spaghetti to Portabella Gnocchi, Fiocchi alle Pere and the ever-popular Salmon Saltimbocca, featuring a pan seared salmon wrapped with

prosciutto in a honey sauce with butter and garlic, served on top of risotto and a side of fresh vegetables.

alerie Holcomb-Botts is a woman of many hats. Literally.

She loves hats. Metaphorically, this wife and mother of two wears many hats—managing her household, looking for new adventures, and running her own at-home bakery, Malerie’s Cakerie–all while keeping a solid social media following developed when she was an event coordinator in Hawaii.

“I hate the title ‘in uencer,’” Malerie says. “But that’s what it’s called. I would video my adventures and things going on.”

Originally from Connecticut, Malerie lived in Hawaii for 15 years, working as a wedding and event coordinator. There, she married her husband Nathan and had two kids back-to-back.

“I tried to go back to work after but realized I just couldn’t with two babies only a year apart,” Malerie says. “So, I decided to leave and take care of my kids exclusively. But I can’t sit still.”

Malerie started her own company, Brunch with Aloha, where she hosted decadent monthly brunch events with various themes, gifts, and centerpieces. For the events, she wanted a cute dessert table, so she decided to bake some treats herself to create her vision.

And they were a hit.

“People started asking me to make things for them, so I mainly just did it for friends,” Malerie says.

Starting the Cakerie

Malerie and her family moved to Leesburg in 2021 and decided to start her own custom cake business, marrying her love of art and baking together. She o ers simple, elegant cakes to unique hand-painted creations.

“I used to paint a lot growing up and really loved it,” Malerie says. “One day I just got the idea to try painting on cookies and cakes with food coloring.”

She does everything from Paw Patrol and Harry Potter themed cakes to hand-painted nature and wildlife edible works of art topped with fresh fruit, owers, and macarons.

Seasonal favorite

Family means everything to Malerie, which is why the holidays are so special to her. She loves baking with her kids, making cookies, cupcakes, and memories she’ll cherish the rest of her life.

“Christmas is my absolute favorite time of the year,” Malerie says. “Honestly, I’d keep it going for six months out of the year if my husband would let me. There is just something so magical about all things Christmas. From the decorations to the lights, the music, and of course the food. It’s all plain old good for the soul comfort and getting to create these traditions with my own children, especially the baking, is something I cannot wait for every single year.”

“THERE IS JUST SOMETHING SO MAGICAL ABOUT ALL THINGS CHRISTMAS. FROM THE DECORATIONS TO THE LIGHTS, THE MUSIC, AND OF COURSE THE FOOD.”
She even had a monthly Brunch With Aloha television segment on KHON2 Honolulu.

rlando Health Medical Group

FHV Health Doctors David Lew, Dave Sustarsic, and Jose Rosado, after more than 45 years providing cardiovascular care in the Central Florida area, can add the title of “restaurateur” to their resumes.

In September, they celebrated the opening of Prime 3 on Main, an upscale steakhouse in downtown Leesburg they own that features a dining experience so good it might just make your heart skip a beat.

“For many years, we’ve talked about and visualized opening a restaurant with a ‘Cheers’ attitude, where people could come sit, socialize, get some great food, great wine, and have a good time,” says Dr.

Sustarsic. Their vision is expressed in a building that once housed Bloom’s Baking House. “We actually looked at several other sites over time and we just never got to the point where we pulled the trigger, but when this location became available, we decided to go for it.”

The minute you walk through the doors of Prime 3, the interior décor—featuring a beautifully tiled high ceiling, exposed brick, and dim lighting—exudes warmth and elegance.

And that’s just the beginning of the experience.

It continues with friendly, impeccable service and an extensive menu with upscale American, Spanish (Latin), and Asian dishes, a fusion inspired by the doctors’ varied cultures.

There is also a wine list to satisfy both novice and master wine enthusiasts created by Dr. Rosado, a WSET Level 3 Sommelier. A full bar features handcrafted and beautifully garnished cocktail creations like the Citrus Belle—a nod to the area’s rich citrus history—by Gina Horan, head bartender.

“Our commitment is to make this restaurant what the name implies,” says Dr. Rosado. “We called it Prime 3 for us, the three owners, but also because we want to be the prime restaurant in Lake County, serving prime food and drinks … We want to be the destination of choice for all our fellow Lake, Sumter, and Central Florida foodies.”

Recently, Style Photographer Nicole Hamel and I visited Prime 3 and we couldn’t be more pleased.

than 50 years. He attended culinary school in New York and made a name for himself in Florida as a chef at a variety of places, including Vic’s, Squires III, and Lake Receptions.

“There are not many upscale steakhouses in Leesburg or Lady Lake, so I want to make sure every dish we serve is something really special,” Chef Aud says.

brown butter ice cream or Crème Brulee in original and key lime avor options.

Dr. Lew says he hopes guests are as excited about the overall Prime 3 experience as he and his partners are.

We tasted a variety of dishes, but our favorites were the very tasty Duroc (pork) Chop, served alongside mashed potatoes with smoky apple demi-glace and a side of asparagus, a perfectly prepared and very tender Prime Rib, and the blackened Norwegian Salmon, which seemed to melt in our mouths.

Our top pick, however, was the Grouper Fromage, a dish I’ve dreamt about every day since.

For those thinking the dish sounds like one they fell in love with at the legendary Vic’s Embers (which closed in 2013 after 25 years), it’s the one! Prime 3 head chef Chef Anonth “Aud” Tannarong was one of the chefs at Vic’s, and he’s recreated the popular recipe for the three doctors.

Originally from Thailand, Chef Aud has been cooking for more

Prime 3 occasionally o ers live music, plus wine dinners/tastings to serve as an introduction to ne wines, and to further educate guests on proper food and wine pairings.

“On our website, we say, ‘We don’t drink wine, we experience wine,’ and that’s exactly it,” Dr. Rosado says. “People know what they like, but maybe there’s something out there I can suggest they try that they’ll like just as much, or even better. I want people to expand on what they drink.”

As for the menu, each doctor has provided input and taste-tested every dish, from soups, salads, sauces and sides to the main entrees, appetizers, and desserts.

Appetizers include Bruschetta Al Fresco, Shrimp Cocktail, Calamari Fritti, Charcuterie and more. For dessert, one can order homemade

GIVING FRIENDSHIPS A SHOT

Bartender Chelsi Soto pours her heart into the job.

hen I moved to Florida just over a year ago, my rst mission was to nd a local watering hole. Only ve minutes from my house, the Tiki Bar at Oxford Downs t the bill. Sure, the commute was ideal, but bartenders like Chelsi Soto kept me going back.

She was the rst person I met, and her sincere, sweet personality made me feel welcome immediately.

The 28-year-old single mom of two holds down a full-time job 8-5, Monday through Friday, in medical billing and coding. Around three years ago, she decided to supplement her income by joining the crew at Oxford Downs.

“Bartending to me was a saving grace. I never knew the freedom and opportunity that came with it. The biggest plus is I have fun while doing it,” she says.

She maintains that while there are sacri ces like throwing away weekends and holidays, plus a solid sleep schedule, it’s worth it.

“I wanted to give my kids a better life than I had.”

A self-described multi-tasking hard worker, Chelsi had her daughter at a very young age and has absolutely no regrets. The freedom this career o ers has opened many doors for her.

“Living in two opposite professional worlds makes life interesting,” she says. “I have a pretty serious day job and then I get to go on stage and play dress-up.”

She loves that she never dreads going to work. “I know I’m going to make money and I know I’m going to have fun, and, above all, I can always be the best version of myself.”

During her time behind the bar at Tiki, she has seen people come and go. She has also made lifelong friends.

“Your customers con de in you and trust you and it’s an unspoken understanding that everything is said in con dence. You are almost an uno cial therapist.”

Like many bartenders, she went in for the cash and discovered something more important.

“The money is amazing, and that’s what draws you in, but in the end, you fall in love with the people you meet.”

New owners maintain La Palma Mexican Grill’s quality food and memorable dining experience.

s the new owners of La Palma Mexican, Grill Ildefonso Hernandez and his mother, Esperanza Hernandez Puerta, serve up delicious food with a side of stellar service.

Ildefonso, who previously worked at his family’s construction company, Hernandez Concrete Inc., o cially became owner of the restaurant in June.

He understands that Mexican food has become an important part of American culture. And he wants to uphold the outstanding reputation La Palma Mexican Grill has maintained since opening in Leesburg.

“It’s not only about great food,” he says. “This is a restaurant where people can bring their families and feel welcomed. We provide a great atmosphere.”

Ildefonso hasn’t reinvented the menu since taking over but he has added some new dishes. One of them is the molcajete, which is served with steak,

with either dish.

“Both of these dishes are large enough to feed two people,” Ildefonso says.

Guests will also enjoy Ildefonso’s margaritas that are served in a glass Patron bottle. The margaritas come in a variety of avors, including passion fruit, raspberry, mango, wildberry, peach, and banana strawberry.

Additionally, Ildefonso goes above and beyond to give diners a taste of Mexican heritage. He puts up a display in the restaurant’s lobby to celebrate important Hispanic holidays such as Dia de los Muertos

In addition, the renowned group Mariachi Tampa performs at La Palma every other Thursday, allowing the restaurant to o er the area’s best live mariachi music.

“Of course, I want everybody to enjoy our food, but I also want them to gain an appreciation for Hispanic heritage,” he says.

The 250-seat restaurant features a beautiful dining room, a festive bar, and an outdoor patio deck where wild animals can be spotted in the trees. There’s also a party room that can accommodate 50 people for large celebrations or meetings.

The legacy continues

am Dapena is no stranger to Cousin Vinnie’s Family Sports Restaurant. For years, he’d visit there to enjoy a plate of delicious wings, engage in a little trivia, or enjoy a few ice-cold beers with his close friends, Vinnie and Cynde Vittoria, who owned the restaurant.

When Vinnie and Cynde decided to retire earlier this year, they didn’t have to look very far to nd someone to buy the restaurant. Sam was an obvious choice.

On March 1, Sam o cially became owner of Cousin Vinnie’s Family Sports Restaurant. Aside from a little interior remodeling and rebuilding the back bar, new stereo system that plays music and sports audio out front of the restaurant where the ring toss game can be found. Sam has kept everything intact, including the restaurant’s name and menu.

That has helped ensure a smooth transition and keeps the longtime regulars coming back.

Prior to purchasing the restaurant, Sam served as project manager for a company that remodels cruise ships. He has traveled to Spain, Australia, Singapore, The Bahamas, and Germany.

“I love to learn and do new things,” Sam says. “Buying the restaurant is just another adventure for me.” I love a challenge and this restaurant has been a great one! I am looking forward to this new venture.

The wings take center stage at Cousin Vinnie’s, which features 36 avors of wing sauces. Wings come in a variety of avors, including teriyaki, Hawaiian jerk, raspberry, garlic parmesan, Cajun, and barbecue. The restaurant has repeatedly won the categories of “Best Wings, Best Fries and Best Sports Bar” in Lake and Sumter Style’s annual “Best of the Best” competition.

Of course, at this sports bar, wings are not the only game in town. The menu is diverse as it is delicious. Appetizers include the popular sausage and cheese re balls, Bu alo chicken and cheese dip, and Cousin Vinnies jumbo secret shrimp. From there, customers can enjoy favorites like a 1lb double cheese burger, Philly cheese steaks, hand battered fried shrimp and sh platters, deep-fried hot dogs, and a variety of fresh salads.

“I plan to add a few new things to the menu. I have already included my new Jalapeno Ranch dipping sauce; it has been a huge hit!” “I de nitely will not extract anything,” Sam says. “Customers can still come here and enjoy all of their favorites.”

The restaurant, which is open seven days a week, continues o ering; beer specials, Wednesday night trivia, and a children’s area. Outside, you can listen to music and play ring toss. Being your sports

headquarters, of course, fans ock there to watch their favorite collegiate and professional teams on the 7 big-screen televisions.

“I’m trying to nd new ways to entertain,” Sam says. “I have really enjoyed owning this restaurant and forming friendships with our amazing guests.”

Simply priceless

Sometimes the best gifts are not store bought and this Christmas will prove it.

do not consider myself a materialistic person, but I’m not gonna lie, I love receiving gifts almost as much as giving them out.

And no, I don’t sh for gifts or expect presents for every occasion, but if someone asks me what I want, I’ll tell them. And if someone hands me a gift, I’ll happily accept and open it with child-like anticipation.

The understanding in our family for Christmas this year, however, is that there won’t be as many gifts under the tree as in years past. And I’m super psyched about it! Instead, we’re pooling our money for a trip to Southern Arizona (where I’m from) to visit my family. Unfortunately, my husband can’t go due to work, but our three kids, their signi cant others, and I are leaving Christmas Day and staying through New Year’s.

We’re very excited, but the trip has me contemplating the similar

scenario surrounding my last time ying home.

It was also Christmas time, my husband stayed home because he had to work, and I ew out with our three little kids in tow.

But that trip was tainted by deep sadness. My dad, on October 31, was told that he had cancer and just months to live. Fast forward 12 years, with my dad very much alive and cancer-free. This year’s trip is set for sheer happiness!

My parents, sister, nephew, and brother-in-law have visited us pre-pandemic, but I haven’t been home since. I’m looking forward to a fun time together visiting cool attractions, the mountains and desert scenery, taking hundreds of pictures, and creating everlasting memories.

I’ve also started a list of nontouristy things I personally miss and wish to experience again while there.

I want to catch up with my beautiful mom, read quotes/book excerpts out loud together and hear her say,

“That’s neat,” watch and cry over an old movie we both love, then fall asleep by her on the couch as she rubs my head softly.

I can’t wait to wake up extra early one morning and drive to Starbucks for co ee with my superhero dad, just us, while still in our pajamas.

I want to help my sweet sister in the kitchen, talk, laugh, reminisce, ip through family photos, and just hug her tightly.

I’d like to hear my very talented aunt singing behind me, as I accompany her on the piano, and have a huge, somewhat chaotic family feast, complete with my uncle’s hand-tossed tortillas fresh o the griddle. Also, visit my Nino and Nina’s house for homemade Chai tea and a stroll through their magical garden.

I want to savor a bowl of my mom’s (best cook ever) albondigas with rice, refried beans, and pineapple upsidedown cake for dessert. And most of all, I want to cherish each minute there to the absolute fullest.

Best gift ever.
