See 200-year-old towering cypress trees draped with Spanish moss while taking guided boat tour through the Dora Canal, described by sportswriter Grantland Rice as “the most beautiful mile of water in the world.” Fish the Harris Chain of Lakes and the Clermont Chain of Lakes, which host some of the country’s most prestigious bass tournaments. Witness a topographical feature that’s rare in Florida—rolling

hills—while navigating your way to Sugarloaf Mountain, the highest point in peninsular Florida at 312 feet above sea level. Hike in one of Lake County’s state parks or preserves, where you’ll be awed by forests dotted with colorful butterflies and subtropical wilderness teeming with wildlife. Venture to Tavares, “America’s Seaplane City,” and receive a birdseye view of our quaint towns while experiencing the excitement of landing on a lake. ALTOONA Population: 85 Size: .5 square miles

You don’t have to visit the Cayman Islands, Cozumel, or the Great Barrier Reef to enjoy an underwater adrenaline rush. Altoona is home to Alexander Springs, which is located in the Ocala National Forest and attracts divers from far away as Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Novice and experienced divers alike receive an up-close view of bluegill, catfish, turtles, kelp-like vegetation, and rock outcroppings in 72-degree water year-round. Alexander Springs is one of only 27 first-magnitude springs in Florida, meaning it gushes 100 gallons of water per cubic second from under the ground. In addition to diving, visitors can canoe down Alexander Creek or enjoy a nature walk on a hiking trail. If you’re looking for a great place to camp, consider Fiddlers Green RV Ranch, which borders the Ocala National Forest. The company offers RV sites and two-bedroom, two-bath villas. Learn about the area’s fascinating history by visiting the McTureous Homestead and Museum, located in a 19th-century Cracker house. It’s the childhood home of Robert M. McTureous, Jr., a U.S. Marine and World War II Medal of Honor recipient.

ASTOR

Population: 1,595 Size: 2.3 square miles Astor is located on the St. Johns River, one of the few rivers in the U.S. that flows north. There’s no better way to experience Florida’s largest river (310 miles!) than on a boat so step aboard a covered pontoon at Captain Ernie’s St. Johns River Tours and see an abundance of wildlife in its natural habitat: alligators quietly sinking under the water, turtles sunbathing on logs, and herons standing statuelike along the riverbank. Equally fascinating sights can be enjoyed when paddling Blue Creek Run, a four-mile scenic trip that leads from Astor to the St. Johns River. Blue Creek is known for its diverse wildlife and picturesque views of wading birds, alligators, otter, and eagles. With a half-dozen boat ramps, Astor also appeals to avid fishermen, and Powell’s Campground welcomes campers wishing to have an extended trip. The St. Johns River and Lake George, both located on the border of northern Lake County, are known for some of the best fishing in the state, particularly for catfish and trophy largemouth bass. A memorable hiking and birdwatching adventure is available at Bluffton Recreation Area’s .75-mile nature trail. Visitors can also enjoy a multi-day experience at Castaways on the River, which offers cozy cottages and boat rentals, and is known for its frog legs, grouper filet, snow crab legs and popcorn shrimp.

UMATILLA Population: 4,005 Size: 3 square miles

Umatilla is teeming with small-town Southern charm that makes isitors feel right at home in no time. It’s the ideal location for traveling families looking for a laid-back vacation with an old Florida ambiance – no high-rise buildings or big-chain hotels, just open spaces, small pristine lakes, and interesting mom and pop shops. It’s also a great place to enjoy outdoor activities such as boating, fishing, camping, and hiking. One of the most popular hiking destinations is Sawgrass Island, a 1,137-acre preserve where hikers take in breathtaking views of sawgrass marshes and longleaf pine communities. The preserve is home to plentiful wildlife, including gopher tortoises, Florida pine snakes, sandhill cranes, bald eagles, and migratory wildfowl. Be sure to have your camera ready to capture the prickly pear cactuses along the preserve’s numerous hiking trails. Another “sweet” place to visit is Sunsational Citrus, which takes visitors to a place in time when citrus production drove Lake County’s economic engine. Fiddlers Green, one of the few citrus packing houses remaining in the county, sells fresh-squeezed orange juice, local honey, jelly, chocolate treats, candy, Florida wines, and candles. Population: 19,600 Size: Over 14 square miles Tavares continues to capitalize on its branding as “America’s Seaplane City.” On any given day, visitors to Lake Dora can enjoy watching seaplanes taking off or splashing down for a landing on the water, even while they dine at Puddle Jumpers and other eateries along the downtown waterfront. They can also arrange a seaplane ride for a spectacular birds-eye view of the area’s beauty with Jones Brothers Air and Seaplane Adventures. In addition to seaplanes, Tavares downtown waterfront has three hotels, several restaurants, wine bar, entertainment district and live music, boat rentals, old-time New Orleans style luxury paddlewheel boat excursions on the Dora Queen, kayak rentals, Dora Canal natural boating experience and trails. Seaplane-a-Palooza is a fly-in event hosted each spring, and the annual Planes, Trains & BBQ festival is typically hosted in February or March. Wooton Park and the Tavares Pavilion on the Lake, a beautiful events venue, is the site of many special occasions, weddings, barbecues, dragon boat races and professional personal watercraft competitions. Tavares Ecological Park, part of a recent beautification project, features a scenic eight-acre walkable park with five small retention ponds that filter out stormwater pollutants before water is discharged into Lake Dora. Paved trails and wooden bridges over retention ponds were designed to attract visitors to the park, the first of its kind in Florida.

EUSTIS

Population: 23,407 Size: 12.4 square miles Eustis may be best known for celebrating Georgefest, a 120-yearold annual weekend-long event honoring President George Washington. Georgefest is a timehonored tradition attracting about 30,000 visitors over three days every February. Started in 1902, it is the second-longest-running festival of its kind in the country. The celebration features musical acts, bass tournament, parade and dog jog, carnival, chili cook-off, 5K, and more. Local history also has a prominent place in the city. Ferran Park, named after Eustis pioneer and businessman Edgar L. Ferran, was the city’s first public park. Today, the park and historic Alice McClelland Bandshell host the city’s big events and holiday celebrations along Lake Eustis. The Eustis Historical Museum details the stories of the Clifford House, the Citrus Museum, and the Unity Bell Pavilion, all related to the city’s earliest homesteaders. The African American Heritage Festival has been staged annually in February for 29 years. The Lake County Fair, which began as the Florida Sportsman Exposition, is 101 years old this year. Eustis hosts the April event that includes entertainment, carnival games, food vendors, educational activities, and competitions in baking, cooking, crafts, and livestock. Music festivals and fairs, such as the Eustis Busker Festival, which features street performers each spring, are also popular attractions. The historic downtown area is home to the Bay Street Players Theatre, and unique shops and restaurants. Works of art are sprinkled throughout downtown and Ferran Park.

ASTATULA Population: 1,945 Size: 3.2 square miles

Astatula, touted as the geographic center of Central Florida, is on the eastern shore of Little Lake Harris, one of Lake County’s finest areas for fishing and boating. The outdoors is the focus of many of the town’s attractions. The Clay Island area has six miles of multi-use trails and plenty of wildlife and birds to see from the trails or three observation towers. The downtown area is also home to some of the county’s largest events, including Leesburg Bikefest, which draws 250,000 visitors, and Leesburg Mardi Gras. Venture a few blocks from downtown and explore Venetian Gardens, a hub of activity with lush landscape, picturesque wooden bridges, nature trails and stunning lakeside views. The park on the shores of Lake Harris is home to many city amenities. Here you will find the “Kid’s Korner” playground along with a splash pad and pavilion. Venetian Gardens is also the location of a full-service marina and the City’s new 15,000 square foot Venetian Center - a multi-purpose facility which can host any event. Coming to the lakefront in 2022 is the Ski Beach Bar & Grill restaurant – accessible by car and boat! For sports enthusiasts historic Pat Thomas Stadium where baseball greats like Pete Rose, Rollie Fingers and other Hallof-Famers played minor league baseball is currently home to the Leesburg Lightning, a Florida

Fruitland Park is a peaceful town known for nice neighborhoods featuring older houses and a sprinkling of more modern ones. It’s also home to Florida’s second-oldest oak tree, estimated to be between 300 and 500 years old, at Lake Griffin State Park. The tree is home to several species of birds, and historians speculate it may have been a landmark for Timucua Native Americans who frequented the area before white settlers. Two trails of the state park’s trails provide an up-close view of Florida’s natural habitats, including swamp and sandhill terrain. Visitors may see raccoons, bobcats, squirrels, opossum, and hawks. Don’t worry about the sizzling summer heat– Spanish moss-draped oak trees provide adequate shade. Those looking for a unique dining experience will find it at The Rose Plantation, located inside a historic mansion built in 1917 by a wealthy Massachusetts newspaper publisher. The restaurant, which overlooks Fountain Lake, serves up everything from grilled salmon and crab cakes to rack of lamb and hand-cut prime filet.

Lady Lake’s picturesque streets are lined with moss-draped oak trees planted in 1986-’87, and the cathedral arch formed by massive oaks on Lady Lake Boulevard remain a beautiful sight today, just as when it was in a photo in the Saturday Evening Post in 1929. Visitors driving into Lady Lake on U.S. Hwy. 441 will see the historic log cabin built in 1935 as the original town hall and now site of the Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays. Nearby, the old train depot houses the Lady Lake Historical Society Museum, which displays artifacts and educational exhibits related from the town’s early Native American inhabitants and pioneer families. The museum also has a train display that depicts how Lady Lake looked in the 1940s and 50s. The town focuses on good-looking developments with shopping, restaurants and new housing to benefit citizens and neighbors alike. Uncle Donald’s Farm, which opened 41 years ago, is one of the oldest and most memorable

attractions in Lady Lake. The farm, situated on a 50-acre property, serves as a working farm where the owners sell fresh eggs and produce products such as goat milk soap. However, the farm doubles as an attraction, giving visitors an up-close and personal encounter with more than 250 animals. You’ll see Jersey Giants, the largest chicken breed in the U.S. that can weigh up to 15 pounds. A 200-pound African tortoise, a Florida panther, a Nubian goat, miniature horses, and red-tailed hawks are among other animals that live on the farm. Children can milk a goat and ride a pony. If you’re into golf, be sure to visit Harbor Hills Country Club. The 18-hole golf course features scenic elevations and oak tree-lined fairways. Water Oak Country Club and Golf will take you away from city-life and into a glimpse of your dream lifestyle. There’s Corkscrew Winery for all those wine connoisseurs out there. Events that promote family and community are part of Clermont’s charm, including a weekly farmer’s market, monthly food truck events and popular annual celebrations like Pig on the Pond, Light Up Clermont, and Red, White and Boom. Clermont has also become a hotbed for investment opportunities, thanks to the ongoing implementation of its award-winning Downtown-Waterfront Master Plan. It’s home to Showcase of Citrus, where you can ride a monster truck to tour a 2,500-acre working citrus and cattle ranch in the “world’s largest 4x4 outdoor adventure.” Showcase of Citrus is open from 8am-7pm every day. There’s also a gem mine and you can pick Florida citrus in season. The nearby Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve is the epitome of natural Florida. It’s a favorite of master birders and those who enjoy exploring the rich plants and trees native to the Sunshine State.

The City of Groveland is nestled in the beautiful rolling hills of South Lake County, an area well known for beautiful lakes and thriving community. Known as the “City with Natural Charm,” it is regarded as one of the safest and fastest-growing cities in Central Florida. The city has recently celebrated a variety of community additions, such as a new Public Safety Complex, an aquaponics farm, a wildflower rain garden, a splash pad, enhancements to the South Lake Trail, and a community gymnasium. Incorporated in 1922, Groveland recently celebrated its centennial anniversary in March with a series of weekend festivities for the community to enjoy. Groveland recently welcomed high-tech Kroger and Amazon fulfillment centers. Town officials predict these companies will provide huge boosts to the city’s economy and create hundreds of employment opportunities for locals while attracting other businesses and investors.

Despite its rapid expansion, Groveland continues to maintain its charming close-knit family feel. Groveland remains focused on prioritizing its natural topography, conserving natural resources, and adding low-impact development community-based objectivities, as evidenced in its recent adoption of a new Future Land Use Element – signifying its commitment to the protection of wildlife habitats through strategic growth practices. This adoption will conserve more than 50% of natural land within approximately 53 square miles by clustering development into walkable, mixed-use towns, villages, and hamlets. Groveland’s newly renovated downtown Lake David Park is the place to be on the second Friday of each month, as local farmers, businesses, and vendors participate in a farmer’s market that’s free and open to the public with live music from 5-9pm.

A town located west of Groveland on State Road 50, Mascotte is dedicated to celebrating community and culture. For recreation, the Mascotte Park Road Complex has four lighted softball fields, a basketball court, soccer field, playground equipment and a small park with two pavilions overlooking a small lake. It’s a great spot to watch the morning sunrise and the evening sunset. The Tedder/ Thomas Civic Center playground and the Palmetto Drive Park also offer outdoor activities. Light Up Mascotte is an annual Christmas holiday event that features Santa Claus and free hot chocolate, popcorn, and candy. Town officials, in partnership with the local police department, business owners, and residents, foster a sense of community by hosting other fun events throughout the year to bring the entire town together. One of Mascotte’s most-popular mainstays is the Rainbow Family Restaurant. Opened in 1964, the restaurant provides a homestyle buffet that includes fried chicken, vegetables, mashed potatoes and gravy.

MONTVERDE Population: 1,901 Size: 1.8 square miles

Minneola proudly displays its motto “Central Florida’s High Point”, a reference to Sugarloaf Mountain, one of the highest peaks in Florida. Here you can visit Lake County’s Green Mountain Scenic Overlook and Trailhead, which offers an overlook to enjoy a memorable view of abundant treetops and wildlife. Minneola is home to a post office and a growing number of restaurants, shops, and businesses. The city is in the design stages of constructing a new library on Main Avenue across from the existing Schoolhouse Library. And there are plans to convert the historic Schoolhouse Library to a museum to showcase the city’s history. Located on U.S. Highway 27 is Minneola’s city hall, which hosts many community activities, classes, and WXW wrestling shows. This will also be home to Minneola’s new Public Safety Complex. U.S. Highway 27 intersects the city, providing a major corridor for convenient access to nearby attractions. Currently, the city is in the process of a game-changing project located within the limits of the Hills of Minneola development of regional impact at the signalized intersection of N. Hancock Road and Citrus Grove Road. The Hills of Minneola is planned for 4,000 residential units and will feature

commercial, medical, and industrial space, hospitality options and a charter school, all to be served by the new Hills Crossing Shopping Center anchored by Publix. Hills Crossing is just 1/4 mile south of the recently completed Exit 278 off the Florida Turnpike. Additionally, the city proudly boasts popular outdoor venues, including the Minneola Athletic Complex, which has a variety of sports fields, playground, sand volleyball court, concessions, and more. The 17-acre Minneola Trailhead Park is paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with a playground, basketball court, ballfield, dog park, exercise pavilion, skate park, and a course for BMX style biking. A community garden on Chester Street is available for residents to come together to grow and harvest their own organic food. Annual community events include Kids’ Safe Night Out on Halloween, which is a great opportunity for families to enjoy free games, food, and an old-fashioned hayride. The city also hosts a Christmas Moonlight Parade on Main Avenue, which features floats and costumes decorated with lights. The event continues at City Hall with various children’s activities and photos with Mr. & Mrs. Claus.

On the west shore of Lake Apopka, 17 miles south of Tavares and 30 miles from Leesburg is Montverde, a unique town that takes pride in its rural character and easy-going lifestyle. There’s no shortage of celebrated athletes in South Lake County, and Montverde Academy, a private college prep school, has produced its share, including a handful of current NBA players. The girls varsity soccer team won the 2019 state championship, and the boys basketball program has won several national championships. The school, which celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 2012, is also home to the Soccer Institute of Montverde Academy. Popular sites to see include Harper House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Truskett Park is an excellent venue for enjoying a family picnic and stunning views of Lake Apopka. Montverde is also known for its longrunning annual Montverde Day Carnival and Music Festival. The November event features live music, food, dancing, vendors, and many other traditional community activities like a cakewalk, chili cook-off and children’s games. Also nestled on the shores of Lake Apopka is Bella Collina, a golf community among rolling hills best known for luxurious, award-winning lakefront homes that offers peaceful living just 30 minutes from Walt Disney World.

ith 1,000+ lakes and waterways spanning 202 square miles, finding fun and relaxation on Lake County’s water is as easy as A, B, C. “Fishing is going bonkers, of course. There’s so much fishing,” says Visit Lake Interim Director Kathy Pagan. “And kayaking and paddleboarding have become more popular.” Ditto for boating, sailing, water skiing, wakeboarding, snorkeling, scuba diving, hydro biking, canoeing, jet skiing and swimming. The county’s lakes, canals, streams, springs, rivers, and ponds have never been more popular. And experiencing all that wonderful water is a breeze. Lake County has 43 boat launch ramps, 20 fishing charter services, 15 marinas, 10 companies offering water tours, and eight places that rent canoes. The largest body of connected water is the Harris Chain of Lakes, which consists of navigable waterways linking Big Lake Harris (the largest, at 15,321 acres), Lake Eustis, Lake Griffin, Lake Dora, Little Lake Harris, Lake Beauclair, and Lake Carlton (the smallest, at 384 acres). An eighth body, Lake Yale, is not connected. Accessing the Harris Chain can be accomplished from Leesburg, Fruitland Park, Eustis, Tavares, Mount Dora, Howey-in-the-Hills and Yalaha. The Clermont Chain of Lakes in southern Lake County is even more voluminous than the Harris Chain (51,012 acres, compared to 42,320). Lake Louisa, the largest of 11 lakes in the Clermont/Groveland area (3,634 acres, Cook Lake is smallest at 21 acres), offer abundant recreational opportunities. AOP offers a variety of tours of Dora Canal, which has a well-deserved reputation as “the most beautiful mile of waterway in the world.” Adventurers can choose a single kayak, tandem kayak, or paddleboard for a variety of tours along the enchanting canal populated by herons, osprey, egrets, cormorants, fish, otters, and turtles living among century-old cypress trees majestically draped in Spanish moss. An abundance of connected lakes makes it easy to cruise from one town or hotspot to the next. “We have a pontoon boat we bought in 2016. We love to just take it out and cruise with our dog, who just loves it too,” says former County Commissioner Jimmy Conner. “The seaplanes flying over in Tavares is a nice touch to see as well. Boat owners are very happy, friendly people. They wave and say hello regularly. It’s just a fun, friendly, relaxing time and the enjoyment our dog has is the icing on the cake.” It’s easy to experience the joy of boating. Lake County abounds with public boat ramps (Hickory Point Recreational Facility has 12) and marinas. And eight Lake County companies rent crafts.

Lake County’s reputation for fabulous fishing is worldwide. In fact, nationally televised fishing tournaments have been held on the Harris Chain. In 2005, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) listed Lake Harris as one of the top 10 sunfish fishing sites. FWC also listed Lake George and the St. John’s River among the best places to fish in the state. Lake Saunders, the Butler chain and Haynes Creek are among popular spots favored by local anglers. While boaters hunt for largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, sunfish, stripers, panfish, and catfish, anglers who prefer casting from the shore often catch their limit in Ferran Park in Downtown Eustis, Hickory Point, the pier at Clermont’s Lakefront Park, the park on Little Lake Harris in Howey-inthe-Hills, and the floating dock at the lower Wekiva preserve of State Road 46. The long fishing pier at Lake Minneola in Clermont is also popular.

I love to watch the fireworks on the water and usually you can find fireworks several nights in a row around the 4th of July. Lake Norris Conservation Area East Trailhead head, 24542 Blackwater Creek Road, Eustis. Those who have kayaked to Lake Norris describe the journey as “exquisite,” “pristine,” “fantastic place to photograph.” Floridarambler.com calls it “a Disneyland for nature lovers.” This gorgeous kayak trail hidden within a 3,660-acre preserve in eastern Lake County, has two sections of Blackwater Creek you can paddle – one leading to Lake Norris. The dark water trail from the launch site to Lake Norris is less than a mile, but what a magical mile! The shore is lined with cypress trees and thick vegetation. Birds are plentiful, especially osprey. As the river opens into Lake Norris, there is a fantastic forest of uniquely twisted dwarf cypress trees. A landing site features a group campsite, picnic tables, hiking trail, and several canoes and paddles (about a mile away from the landing) you can use for free by calling the Lake County Water Authority at 352.343.3777. That’s also the number to call to make a camping reservation.

A two-hour cruise on the Dora Queen, an 80-foot New Orleans style paddlewheel boat based in Tavares, is a perfect way to enjoy majestic views of beautiful Lake Dora. The Queen’s lounge-style seating on two decks and music and cocktails makes her ideal for private events. Cruises are Wednesday through Sunday.

BIRDING Lake County is one of the top destinations in the nation for birdwatching. The lakes and natural areas have attracted more than 200 different species of birds. Some of the most popular places for spotting multiple bird species include: Alexander Springs Recreation Area has been popular with nature enthusiasts for years. Located in northern Lake County, the springs recreation area is an excellent destination for swimmers, hikers, campers, birdwatchers and wildlife lovers. The Timucuan Trail is a 1.1-mile interpretive loop trail that highlights vegetation used by early Native Americans. The Florida National Scenic Trail runs 72 miles through the Ocala National Forest and is a popular location for beginning and advanced birders. Florida Scrub-Jay Trail in Clermont is named for the elusive, rare species whose estimated population is 4,000. Birding enthusiasts come from as far away as England, Germany, Japan and Canada to visit the 15-acre property. The trail is home to 135 other species, including painted buntings, warblers, herons, sandhill cranes, Carolina chickadees, red-bellied woodpeckers and purple martins. The trail hosts tours and educational programs. The Green Mountain Scenic Overlook and Trailhead is a 132-foot elevated boardwalk that offers exceptional views of Sugarloaf Mountain, Lake County’s highest point. Popular with bicyclists traversing the Green Mountain Scenic Byway, the overlook is an ideal location for watching dozens of species of birds and butterflies. Located at 20700 County Road 455 near Montverde, the overlook is open daily from 7 a.m. to dusk. Lower Wekiva River Preserve is a system of backwater streams and wetlands that provides habitats for black bears, river otters, alligators, wood storks and sandhill cranes. The Sand Hill Nature Trail offers a self-guided hiking tour. There is no admission fee at the Fechtel Road entrance in Eustis, and the park is open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset. Palatlakaha Environmental and Agricultural Reserve, also known as PEAR Park, is filled with native plants, wildflowers and migrating birds as well as a Florida scrub-jay restoration area. The 318-acre park offers several miles of hiking trails, a nature center and a new Wildlife Watch Post. Located off U.S. Highway 27 in Leesburg, the park is open daily from 6:30 a.m. to dusk.

The SpeakOut Hotline is designed to help anyone anonymously report any threatening behavior or situation that endangers a person, their friends, family, community, or school. By guaranteeing a caller’s anonymity, SpeakOut allows the caller to give information without the fear of retribution. Calls are received 24/7/365. No calls are ever recorded, caller ID is not used, and operators never ask for personal information. Tips can even be submitted online or with a free app, P3 Campus. Again, this process is completely secure and anonymous and the submitter can attach photos or videos. SpeakOut works hand in hand with its parent company, Crimeline, so that when immediate action is necessary, information is quickly forwarded to school officials and law enforcement.

The catalyst for SpeakOut originated here in Lake County. On September 29, 1995, a fourteen-year-old Tavares Middle School student was shot by another student. It was discovered that several students attending Tavares Middle were aware of trouble between the victim and shooter but never spoke to anyone in authority about it. Several students were also aware that the student had brought the gun to school. Had someone spoken out, perhaps this tragedy could have been averted. Research backs up the theory that in a significant number of violent incidents in U.S. schools, someone knew that an attacker was making plans or made statements and no one reported it.
