The City of Groveland is nestled in the beautiful rolling hills of South Lake County in an area well known for scenic lakes and thriving community. Known as the “City with Natural Charm,” it is regarded as one of the safest and fastestgrowing cities in Central Florida.
The city is rejoicing in a variety of community improvements, including a new Public Safety Complex, aquaponics farm, wildflower rain garden, splash pad, enhancements to the South Lake Trail and community gymnasium. And more good things are planned. A City Strategic Plan is in place to help balance and plan for smart growth that leads to a complete and naturally charming community.
Groveland celebrated its centennial anniversary in March 2022 with a series of weekend festivities for the community to enjoy.
Groveland recently welcomed high-tech Kroger and Amazon fulfillment centers. City officials expect these companies to provide huge boosts to the local economy, create hundreds of employment opportunities for locals and attract other private businesses and investors.
Despite rapid expansion, Groveland continues to maintain its close-knit family feel. Groveland decision makers remain focused on prioritizing the natural topography, conserving natural resources, and adding low-impact development community-based objectives. Example: the recent adoption of a new Future Land Use Element to protect wildlife habitats through strategic growth practices. The plan will conserve more than 50 percent of natural land within approximately 53 square miles
by clustering development into walkable, mixed-use towns, villages and hamlets.
Additionally, in June 2023, Groveland became the first community in Florida and the Southeastern United States to become a certified international Dark Sky Community. It was due to the community’s dedication to combating light pollution to protect the night sky and benefit all living things.
Groveland’s newly renovated downtown Lake David Park is the place to be on the second Friday of
each month, as local vendors and business owners line the streets so families can grab food, enjoy a beverage, or discover a unique find for their home. This market is free and open to the public, with live music 5-9pm.
Looking for charm? Look no further than Groveland’s residences, gorgeous landscapes and flourishing agriculture.

Location, location, location is the business cliché and Leesburg has been the center of commerce in the heart of Florida for more than a century. The city is ideally located immediately northwest of Orlando and within easy proximity to Tampa, Miami and Jacksonville.
Leesburg is a diverse business and residential community with 28,000 residents nestled among the Harris Chain of Lakes with a pleasant average annual temperature of 71 degrees. The area a racts 50,000 people to work each weekday with a large hospital and medical office community, a regional shopping mall, growing industrial development and aviationrelated businesses at the city airport. Workforce training is provided through Lake-Sumter State College and the University of Central Florida in Leesburg as well as Lake Technical Center in nearby Eustis.
The area is intersected by major highways including U.S. Highways 27 and 441 and Florida’s Turnpike, which connects locally to Interstate 75. Florida Central Railroad is a few miles away. Leesburg International Airport features an office of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Department of Homeland Security, which allows for international flights to be inspected and cleared here in the city.
Leesburg offers fast and efficient, single-point access to government services – a big benefit to get your project started quickly and smoothly. A full complement of utilities
includes electric, water, wastewater, treated re-use for irrigation and natural gas. The city also provides solid waste collection. Economic development and tax incentives are available to businesses that create high-paying jobs. Florida has no state tax and tax advantages are available to make your business dollars go further.
Leesburg’s leadership is looking toward the future with additions to the local budget, capital improvements and an emphasis on
economic development that includes grants to encourage businesses to update their façade, signage and landscaping. These are small changes that can be big for business and money is available to help business owners make the changes.
Quality of life for residents is also an integral part of planning for the City’s future. The renaissance of Venetian Gardens, the “Gem of the City” offers a splash pad, stateof-the-art Kids Korner playground, covered pavilions, boat docks and enhancements to the Ski Beach area including a walking trail and boat ramp. Venetian Gardens is also home to the beautiful Venetian Center, a nearly 15,000 sq. ft. multi-purpose facility on the shores of Lake Harris. The new H.O. Dabney Aquatic Center which includes an 8-lane competition swimming pool and a zero-entry pool with play features and slides opened in spring 2022. Leesburg’s marquee events such as Leesburg Bikefest, 4th of July celebration and professional fishing tournaments draw thousands of visitors to the city each year.
With residents, businesses and city leadership working together and innovative plans well underway, Leesburg is headed to a great future filled with partnerships, performance and progress.
DOWNTOWN LEESBURGThroughout Lake County, you’ll find many parks where you can take in the great outdoors. In fact, you can choose a park based on your preferred amenities. For instance, at Lake Idamere Park in Tavares, you’ll find Miracle Field, a track and baseball field built to accommodate people of all abilities, as well as a playground, a nature trail and fishing, canoeing, kayaking and picnic areas. At PEAR Park in Leesburg, visitors can take advantage of many sporting opportunities with baseball, basketball and pickleball courts as well as a mix of upland and wetland native ecosystems by way of the park’s six miles of hiking trails. Interpretive kiosk areas and pavilions along the way provide more information on the park’s different ecosystems and wildlife. There’s even a nature center where visitors can view rock, mineral, shell, sand and animal exhibits inside. Outside, there are more than 80 samples of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks along with documentation on their origins and classifications.
Even Lake County’s smaller parks offer big experiences. For example, at Twin Lakes Park in Leesburg, you can relax with a picnic as the kids burn some energy on the playground. Afterward, set out on the boardwalk along the sinkhole pond to see if you can spot some of the park’s wildlife.
“If you just want to connect to Old Florida nature, I think it gets overlooked that we have this little area over here,” says Angela Harrold, director of Lake County Office of Parks and Trails. “When they come, they're going to have a safe and clean place to come and bring their families and enjoy outdoors. I think we provide a really great service, and I'm really proud of it.”
If you’re looking for more organized exploration in Lake County’s parks, make your way to Lake Louisa State Park in Clermont for a guided horseback ride or Segway tour.
“With the horseback rides, it’s a very special experience, being immersed in the park,” says Arden Tilghman, founder and CEO of P3, the park’s concessionaire. “We are deep in the woods. We're not on the edge of a road. We're not on the backside of a neighborhood. You're in the woods, and it's a
FOUNTAIN LAKE BIKE TRAIL LAKE IDAMERE PARKunique vantage point to see that from the elevated position of sitting on the back of the horse.”
While most people choose the one-hour trail ride that traverses about four miles of trails, many visitors come for the Champagne & Charcuterie Sunset rides, which typically include a one-hour trail ride followed by two hours by the campfire.
“At the end of the ride, we have a charcuterie board and a campfire with s’mores, and everybody gets a complimentary glass of champagne,” Arden says.
The park’s Segway tours are also quite popular with visitors because they can see more of the park in a shorter period of time. Most Segway tours are about an hour a half and cover around three miles of trail.
“Some people are up for a little hike, maybe a mile, but we can travel pretty quickly on the Segways,” Arden says. “People may have a curiosity to see and experience the park, but not necessarily be up for a four-mile hike. And both of these modalities — horseback and Segways — help people get deeper into these experiences and settings than they would maybe want to or even be able to go on their own.”
Visitors also can take guided hikes and kayak tours or opt for an unguided activity in the park, which offers 20 miles of trails. If you want to extend your stay at Lake Louisa State Park, you can book one of the glamping sites. Choose from three luxury glamping tents outfitted with air conditioning and five eco-tents for an upgraded rustic experience.
“Whether you just have an hour or you want to stay and really disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with nature, you could do any of it in the park,” Arden says.
If you prefer to explore by foot, bike or even horseback, Lake County’s parks have a trail for you. There are 37 miles of paved trails and 38 miles of unpaved trails, ranging in hiking difficulty from light to vigorous. So they’re for everyone — walkers, runners, cyclists, people who just want to have their kids take a walk or take their strollers out, walking your (leashed) dog.
“We encourage all that activity,” Angela says.
Many trails offer stunning views, such as Green Mountain Scenic Overlook and Trailhead in Minneola, which is home to the highest elevations in Central Florida.
“It has a very nice gravel trail, and it has an overlooked tower where you can look out over toward Lake Apopka,” Angela says. “It actually goes into another portion of the Lake Apopka Loop
trail, and you can walk that trail for miles. It's beautiful.”
Head to Lake County’s conservation areas for an immersive experience. For instance, Lake May Reserve in Eustis has trails throughout its 136 acres. Ferndale Preserve in Ferndale has trails with elevations of 165 feet above sea level throughout its 192 acres that offer scenic views.
“A lot of our preserves in our conservation areas are the places you really want to go if you want to connect to nature,” Angela says.
You can also hit the trails on horseback. Horseback riding is permitted at Pasture Reserve in Groveland, Neighborhood Lakes Scenic Trail and Trailhead in Sorrento, and at Ferndale Preserve.
Trails vary in terrain from paved to gravel to very sandy, so if that’s an issue, don’t hesitate to seek advice on which trails are best suited for your needs.
“One of the best ways to find [the best trail] is to reach out to our office and ask,” Angela says. “If they're looking for a stabilized trail system, we can offer that to them. If you want an accessible trail, that would be your Neighborhood Lakes Scenic Trail and Trailhead, which has a paved trail.”
LAKE LOUISA STATE PARKYou’ll find plenty of opportunities to see the wildlife in Lake County’s many expansive natural areas.
“We actually have a crazy amount of birding events, and people come from very far and wide all over the world to come to our parks and join these birding surveys,” Angela says. “If you're into birding, come to [any of our conservation areas].”
For instance, at Pine Meadows Conservation Area in Eustis, you’ll find nearly 120 species of birds, including the Henslow’s sparrow, bald eagle, blue-winged warbler and swallow-tailed kite. At Lake May, both migrating and resident species visit the area, so
you could see everything from ducks to shorebirds. Other parks for birding include Haynes Creek Park in Leesburg, Palatlakaha River Park in Clermont and Pine Forest Park in DeLand.
Birds are just a small portion of the vast variety of wildlife to be seen in Lake County. For instance, at Ellis Acres Reserve in Paisley you could spot wild turkey, white-tailed deer, Sherman’s fox squirrel, Florida Sandhills crane and even a Florida black bear. Neighborhood Lakes Scenic Trail and Trailhead is home to bobcat, gopher tortoise, Gulf Fritillary Butterfly and wild turkey. At Ferndale Preserve, there are more than 50 species of butterflies, along with bobcat, coyote, otter, Florida softshell turtle, Eastern coachwhip snake and American alligator.
In fact, you might encounter an American alligator anywhere near water in Lake County.
“You always just assume there’s an alligator in any body of water,” Angela says. “So you just have to be vigilant and pay attention.”
To learn more about the parks and the wildlife, the Lake County Parks and Trails offer educational events every month throughout the county. These include educational hikes, guided paddles, birding hikes, learning more about specific wildlife, children’s story times (reading with a naturalist), learning how to identify animals by their tracks and so much more. A current list of events is available on the Parks and Trails calendar, where you can make a required reservation to attend.
SWAMP FEVER AIRBOAT TOURSWith more than 1,000 lakes and rivers, exploring Lake County nature by water comes easy.
“We have nine Blueways [that cover] 162 miles,” Angela says. “They're beautiful.”
Blueways are similar to hiking trails except they are on water instead of land. They also feature ratings, from light to vigorous, based on the blueway’s average distance and time to complete. The waterways include areas of the St. Johns River, Golden Triangle, Palatlakaha Basin and Ocklawaha Basin. Each offers a different experience, ranging from skirting along a lakefront to running through remote, undeveloped areas.
For example, Blue Creek Run covers four miles between Astor and the St. Johns River, while the Lake Griffin Run encircles the southern portion of its namesake lake.
Visitors can travel the blueways by canoe, kayak and stand-up paddle boards for an up-close-and-personal look at area wildlife.
“So you can go out into the water and see the birds, you can see the alligators and fish,” Angela says. “It’s a really nice way to get out there and enjoy it.”
Visitors can also check out Lake County’s lakes by taking advantage of the area’s boat ramps. These include ramps at Lake George, Lake Holly, Lake Yale and the St. Johns River. You’ll also find canoe and kayak launches at many of the boat ramps.
“You have both, and you can utilize which one works for you,” Angela says.
One of the most popular activities on and by the water is fishing.
"We’re on Lake Harris, and we host a lot of fishing tournaments,” Angela says. “They launch right from this park to go out to the lake.”
It’s important to note that if you want to fish, you do need a Florida fishing license, which are available online and at many local stores around the lakes.
Something unique to Lake County is the option to swim in a natural 72-degree spring, Alexander Springs Recreation Area, a first-magnitude spring (one of 27 in Florida) between Astor and Altoona.
“The big hole you can swim over is really cool,” says Tonee Davis, natural resource specialist at Alexander Springs Recreation Area. “That’s a neat feature that we still allow people to go in the hole. It’s easy to get in and out of the water. I think it’s popular for families.”
In fact, it’s the only spring where certified divers can scuba. Visitors also have the ability to kayak, canoe and fish outside the swimming area.
SWAMP FEVER AIRBOAT ADVENTURE KAYAKING ALEXANDER SPRINGS CATBOATS“It is a one-stop shop,” Tonee says. “If you're into history, there’s something there for you.”
You can learn more about the people who lived in Alexander Springs along the Timucuan Trail. And there’s a burial site as well.
For a short hike through a forest of palms, hit the Timucuan Trail, a 0.9-mile interpretive loop with a boardwalk adjacent to the spring. There’s also a paved trail where you can take in views of the spring alongside the south side of the basin.
Grab your smartphones if you’re looking for an innovative way to involve the kids in experiencing Alexander Springs Recreation Area.
“It's an interactive game,” Tonee says. “You download it on your phone. It’s called Agents of Discovery, and we have a sustainable recreation mission. It gets you walking around the recreational area to unlock different activities to do.”
Visitors to Alexander Springs Recreation Area can take part in special events such as freshwater snorkeling, scuba lessons and special programming throughout the year. You’ll also find picnic areas, so you can pack a lunch, bring the family and spend the day basking in water and sunshine.
“It is a natural feature of Florida, and it’s special,” Tonee says. “We want people to come out, we want people to feel comfortable and welcome and make memories. We see it as a special hidden place, and we want to protect the resource for future generations.”
Access to Alexander Springs Recreation Area is $12 per person per day. There is an onsite outfitter if you want to rent a canoe or kayak, or you can bring your own. There’s also a 67-unit campground for tents and RVs up to 35 feet in length. However, there are no
electrical, water or sewer hook-ups. While some sites are available for reservation, many also are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The most popular month for camping is November, so plan to make a reservation in advance if you want to camp at the time.
Regardless of what your interests are — hiking, kayaking, birding or just unleashing the kids on the playground — Lake County is the perfect place for a natural retreat that should be on every itinerary.
“We have a lot of really amazing natural areas,”Angela says. “I think a lot of people think of Central Florida and they think Disney World or downtown Orlando, but we have this really nice little nook where we’re managing our land resources while also finding a safe place for people to come and enjoy nature or enjoy sports. I would like for people not to overlook it just because we're not part of the theme park area. We definitely offer a more enjoyable outdoor nature experience.”
ALEXANDER SPRINGS EXITING THE DORA CANALOpened in 2023, Great Scott Farms quickly became an agritourism and u-pick destination. But its roots were long established before then. It’s actually the public side of Long & Scott Farms, a commercial and wholesale farm founded in 1963 by Frank Scott Jr. and Billy Long. Main crops included Zellwood Sweet Corn and Kirby pickling cucumbers, but expanded to incorporate kale, cabbage and even turf grass. In 2003, Frank’s daughter, Rebecca, and daughter-in-law, Cindy, opened Scott's Maze Adventures, an educational seven-acre corn maze, and Scott’s Country Market to break into agritourism.
“A lot of people didn't know we were still here, so we decided to open up to the public to bring people out to teach them about agriculture and let people know that we were still

Sunsational Farms began back in the 1970s when Nick and Sharon Faryna started a business to manage and maintain citrus groves for local citrus growers. In 2001, they opened a packing house, Sunsational Citrus, to handle the area’s citrus crops. In 2019, the company’s commercial operations were forced to close due to the impact of citrus greening, but the Farynas would not be stopped for long. They opened Sunsational Farms and enlisted friends Bill and Dru Baker to grow the business.
Today, visitors can shop the farm store for fresh produce, fresh-squeezed orange juice, soft-serve ice cream and other tasty treats. In the fall and winter, the farm offers u-pick for mini pumpkins and Christmas trees. Sunsational Farms also hosts numerous events throughout the year that feature food trucks, vendors, games and more. The Facebook page is the best place to find out what’s coming up so you don’t miss out on the fun.
Founded in 1979, Cherrylake was the dream of Michel and Veronique Sallin, who moved from France to Florida, where they hoped to build a sustainable agricultural business.
“Michel grew up on an apple farm in Normandy, France,” says Caraline Jones, marketing manager for Cherrylake. “He and his wife, Veronique, came to America and wanted to get into agriculture. They found a love and a passion for Florida grapefruit, and that's when they started the company here.”
Most of Cherrylake’s citrus growth was destroyed by freezes in the early 1980s, so they moved most of their operation to South Florida. While some citrus growth remained at the Groveland farm, the family turned its attention to ornamental tree production. Today, the Sallins’ children, Melanie Ressler, Timothee Sallin and Chloe Gentry lead the organization.
Cherrylake now welcomes the public to experience the farm through u-pick for tangerines in November and farm races and dark skies parties in February and March. The farm races that started in 2017 invite participants to race among the trees for a 5k, 10k or duathlon.
stargazing, food trucks, yard games and more. More than 500 people turned out, and an annual event was born. During Farm Days events, visitors also can walk through Cherrylake’s native pollinator garden.
“It’s a cool place for both kids and adults to discover and connect with nature and see the butterflies flutter, see the flowers and just learn more about what a sustainable native landscape
looks like in the State of Florida,” Caraline says. “It's beautiful. One thing that's really beautiful about it is every season is different, so it's truly a year-round garden. In the fall when we have the u-pick, a lot of our grasses are in full bloom and it's really a pretty magical time to see it.”
To find out when Cherrylake is open for u-pick and events, check the website (above) for current information.
“That was one of our first explorations into agritourism,” Caraline says. “For us, it's an opportunity to be able to welcome the local community to our farm and to share it because we are a wholesale-only company. We thought we would love to be able to share the farm with the community. We got a lot of requests for people who want to experience it. And that's when we started to get more involved in agritourism. Agritourism itself has flourished over the years, and it's a great opportunity for us to be able to jump in on that trend.”
In 2023, Cherrylake hosted its first dark skies party, with
While picking your own fruits, vegetables and other goodies at Lake County’s u-pick farms means you have some delicious treats, the overwhelming benefit is an opportunity to learn more about the county’s farming history and the people behind it.
“One thing we like to say is that, on the farm, the days are simple but never without purpose,” Caraline says. “It's a place to connect, to play, to refresh and inspire each other, to grow as a community, to connect with the land and to learn from it, as well as just the exposure to agriculture. It’s the second-largest industry in our state. And Florida is known for citrus. [We are] able to give children and adults the opportunity to get
more connected with where their food comes from and to be able to pick the citrus themselves. It's a great way to connect with nature to learn from it and be refreshed and inspired.”
