Dear readers, The funny thing about fashion is that it’s as important to be in vogue with prevalent trends as it is to make a style statement in an inimitable way. The way fashion seamlessly glides into a luxuriant mood this time of the year is indeed amazing. From runway styles to street fashion, style is most innovated in this season, Autumn-Winter 2011. This inaugural Park Avenue M issue highlights the season’s fashion trends that are most appreciated in bright royal colours, adorned with layering in polywool suits, jackets and woollens with stylish cuts and fits. Accessories take a front seat that embellish the looks in contrast colours. The passion to dress is what we are keen to share. We have also put together a gallery of ‘What’s New’ that gives you the first exclusive glance into our latest collection. And finally, there is more than just looks, but also real fashion news that will lead you to walk on your own ramp. Happy reading! Shreyas Joshi Group President, Raymond Apparel Ltd

CHECK IT OUT: Sophistication personified is what Park Avenue’s new collection is all about... and that amply shows in these checkered shirts we picked up for you this season.

2.

PLAY UP WITH PAISELY: Etro’s recent collection seems to have paid tribute to the pattern that becomes as light as a shadow, watermarked, hidden in the linings or decisive like a tattoo. Go ahead and flaunt it this season.

3.

RISE’N’SHINE: Canali’s shoes are known for their class and sheen. If you skip them this season, your wardrobe will look washed out. You wouldn’t want that now, would you?

4. LAID BACK: Casual shopping or an unhurried drink in the evening with squash buddies, Park Avenue’s new line of

casual denims are easy to slip into this season.

5. GO RUGBY STYLE: Sports jackets are a hit these winters and these Alcott rugby jackets

are a perfect way to be the trend. 05 | DECEMBER 11

BOOTS

Y

ou could even die with your boots on, literally, because they are so hot this season. Ankle length or knee-high, hip boots or wedge boots, just pick any and get ruggedness on the house for the whole look. They have the added advantage of keeping your walkers snug and warm.

Boots for long have enjoyed a cult status in the West but in this part of the world, people are still warming up to it. However, with a plethora of brands coming with their latest collection here, you have a variety to choose from. And surprisingly, they look classy with everything. Indian designers at the latest fashion week teamed them up with the wackiest of attires, stretching the limits of imagination. From Bandhgalas to sherwanis, tuxedos to Italian suits, pleated pants to slim fit trousers, you can wear them with practically anything and make a fashion statement. Here we have hand-picked some of the boots we put our money on. We are sure that you are sure to agree with us.

HEAD-TURNER

These pants have made a chic comeback as a relaxed yet classy alternative to jeans. Like their close cousin, denims, they’re easy and comfortable to wear. The upside to the fabric is that you can dress them or down and they would still make you stand out of the crowd. While thicker versions of corduroys will keep you warm when mercury dips, the fabric can also be seen in light shirts and jackets. Go for different colours if you are the adventurous sorts, you know, like crimson, navy blues and you would definitely grab eyeballs.

to easily button the jacket without it straining. Conversely, there shouldn’t be too much space between the button and your chest - no more than a fist’s worth.

LENGTH: When your arms

are hanging straight down, you should be able to cup your fingers under the sides of your suit jacket. However, these days, with shorter suits in style, some jackets reach only about an inch or two beyond the cuff of your suit sleeve.

TROUSERS: Your trousers’

length should reach the top of the heel of a standard dress shoe, naturally breaking over the front of the shoe.

LAPEL: A notch lapel - what you see on most business suits - is the standard. You’re always safe with a notch lapel. Go for one on the narrow side, which will have a more modern, slimming effect.

WHEN DRESSED FORMALLY, THE TIE KNOT MUST CONCEAL THE COLLAR BAND. Else it’s tied too loose. THE TIE-TIP MUST TOUCH THE WAISTBAND. While long and dangling ones look clumsy and will dip into your soup, the short tie is, quite simply, silly.

SQUARES FOR SQUIRES

A pocket square is a classical accent that adds a distinction to the suit jacket.

INSPIRED BY STYLISH BLOKES >> FOUR WAYS TO SPORT THE SQUARE

>> James Bond: Straight across, perfectly slick. Best achieved with white linen or cotton kerchiefs.

>> Fred Astaire: Flamboyant and debonair. Spread the fabric (preferably satin or softer silks), pinch from the centre, raise it up, get a fluffy top, tuck it in.

>> John F Kennedy: Single or multiple point. Silks, linen or cottons are best to achieve this structured style.

>> Sir Winston Churchill: Similar to Astaire’s (softer silks preferred), but with more folding in of the corners, creating a more ragged, frequently used and tucked in look.

EVERYONE HAS BAGGAGE, YOURS SHOULD BE TOP QUALITY. Invest in fine stackers – where you store determines what’s in store for you, eh? Get a posh leather office bag, a smart weekender and some fine accoutrements to fill up and flaunt.

A journalist, gadget guru and a writer. There are many feathers in your cap. Which one do you enjoy the most? What I love the most is a holiday with kids (laughs). But jokes apart, I think the one which I enjoyed the most personally was way back when I was actually a reporter. It was far more challenging, going to Kashmir and other sensitive areas, covering stories and being there when the news is being made. So if you are asking me what facet of my career I enjoyed the most, it has to be that. And of course, the challenges keep rising. I crave for them and being a CEO is the biggest challenge of the lot. Do you enjoy it? Yes and no, I mean, the reporting days were probably more fun. And there are challenges (being a CEO) because it’s a very trying media environment right now so I am just trying to do whatever I can do for the company. In your two decades of reporting, you have been to many war ravaged places... Which one was the most unnerving and why? The most dangerous moment that I recall is when I was in Charar-e-Sharif when we miscalculated. At the end of the day it is all about taking risks but calculated ones. You should know what you are doing. So we went to Charar-e-Sharif, which was in the hands of the militants. I thought they were Kashmiri militants but it was only when we got inside there, I realised that they were not. They were Afghans and for the first time it was mentioned that they were from Lashkare-Toiba and I of course had not heard about them. And they were assuming that we were government agents so it was dangerous. Any event that you think of as the biggest moment? All the years...the biggest moment was probably going

to Siachen. The kind of pictures we got have not been replicated on Indian television till date. Covering Ayodhya and Kashmir also come in mind right now. You also have the distinction of interviewing many international dignitaries. Who, according to you is the best dressed and most stylish? Who is the most charismatic? I think Shahrukh (Khan) is well dressed and also Imran (Khan). Mr Bachchan (Amitabh Bachchan) I think is the most charismatic. I was floored by his charms when we did the 12 hour ‘Save Our Tiger’ telethon last year. Are you a trendsetter or a follower? What cut suits do you wear? What type of shirts do you like? (Thinks) Well, I like shirts but I’m not into brands. I pick up a lot of stuff from streets from world over.

it if you are passionate about news and not about thinking it is a glamorous profession. OK.... and if one aims to be CEO, what will be your advice? Oh! You don’t become a CEO. You are probably tricked into being one (laughs). If you ever told me that I would be a CEO of any thing I would have laughed. I would have laughed even more when I was a reporter but, you know, various things happen and you find yourself taking up new responsibilities. As a CEO are you into power dressing? Do you think it is important?

I never thought about it quite frankly. I wear what I am comfortable in, which looks nice. It is probably a wrong thing to tell a fashion magazine but that is the truth because most of the time, I wear what I like. AND THAT IS WHEN HE BRINGS IN HIS WIFE SEEMA CHANDRA TO TALK ABOUT WHAT HE LIKES IN CLOTHES AS HE CONFESSES, SHE IS THE ONE WHO SHOPS FOR HIM. SHE TELLS US THAT HE LOVES HIS RAVI BAJAJ SWEATERS, WEARING COTTON/LINEN WHITE KURTIS AND ALSO A LOT OF STUFF FROM DESIGNER ASHISH SONI, ESPECIALLY HIS BANDHGALAS.

Vikram Chandra will not be caught wearing... I can tell you 100 things but what comes in my mind right now is sequins. For stepping out for a few drinks to a club, you will be most comfortable in... Probably a shirt and jeans or, since I usually go out after work, suits. If it’s whisky then it has to be... I like single malts. What tip would you want to give to budding journalists? I think the single biggest mistake that people make when they get into journalism is of misunderstanding it to be a glamourous job. It’s not glamourous and the thrill one gets of being on television last three days, four if you are lucky. After that what keeps you going day after day, year after year is being in love with the news. Forget about what you are doing and just be there when the news is breaking. That’s what will keep you going. So you should get into 015 | DECEMBER 11

FIRST BITE: RESTAURANT REVIEW

For that perfect weekend getaway THE FOOD

A world cuisine restaurant, it has an impressive assortment of perfectly crafted European, Lebanese, Asian, Thai, Indian and other world famous cuisines. We started with a Greek Mezze Platter, a tabuleh, hummus, babaganouch, kebbe, chicken sambusik and chicken shawarma in pita pocket and a fresh orange juice. Executive chef Kushal Arora, a specialist in Arabic, German, French and Italian cuisine told us that traditionally, mezzes are treated as a “bonding” delicacy, which family and friends enjoy with a couple of drinks. The dish tastes best with a good bottle of wine but we would suggest you not to limit yourself as the chicken and spices tend to taste different with different types of spirits. It was indeed a standalone eating experience but we couldn’t just stop at that. Next we ordered a tenderloin steak that was soaked in balsamic reduction with leek and potato dauphinoise. And believe me

by Ritika Kumar

There have been a lot many long weekends this year and that got us thinking. A place where we can relax, count the stars in the sky with a pool by the side and a barbecue in the corner. And luckily we found such a place in Senses, the restaurant in the Golden Tulip. when we say this... it tasted heavenly. The meat was perfectly grilled and melted in the mouth with the reduction uplifting the taste. It was a treat that we hadn’t relished in the longest time. We were still enjoying the aftertaste of the meat when came the dessert, which we had ordered and completely forgotten about. But the service at the restaurant is so hospitable that you just cannot say no. Also, our dessert, an orange tiramisu, which literally means ‘pick me up’, was too hard to resist and had a taste which lingered on our palette for a long time. The menu is neatly sectioned into breakfast (which has choices from all main cuisines served), salads, starters, sizzlers, Mediterranean, Indian, oriental, continental, sandwich, burger and pizzas, which you could customise with the toppings of your choice. When asked about such a varied and elaborate menu, chef Arora said, “The customer today is well travelled and has a discerning tongue.” He

acknowledged that it is imperative to cook with the choicest of fresh ingredients that make all the difference and is a signature at Senses.

THE DECOR

Located at the Pool level, Senses, is an allday dining restaurant that offers its guests the spoil to dine anytime. Cheery and European interiors and relaxed seating provide an easy familiarity that makes diners feel welcome at any time of the day. A versatile space, Senses lends itself to all types of dining occasions; from a business breakfast, to an informal lunch, or even an intimate dinner. The place is perfect to indulge your taste buds that match endless hours of conversations.

WHAT WE SAY

It is in the interiors of Chattarpur area so if you aren’t living near by, plan a whole day outing to enjoy this place and its food. Senses embodies the European refinement with exceptional expertise in food and service. Go for the chef’s special (Greek Mezze Platter, Dill Crusted Prawns and Avocado, Pan seared Norwegian Salmon Steak, Mahi Singhori, Chocolate Indulgence) or a finely picked buffet, you would not be disappointed.

ASTON MARTIN V12 ZAGATO

by Ishan Raghava

ZAGATO is for an automotive

enthusiast a very evocative name for it brings with it memories and visions of exotically designed Italian sports cars which were in their era amongst the best racing cars in the world and brought much glory to not only the design house but also to the various manufacturers who used the designer houses expertise to produce fast, aerodynamic and perhaps most important of all, exquisite looking cars.

Zagato and Aston Martin’s relationship is a long standing one that started 50 years ago with the production of the limited edition DB4 GT Zagato of which only 20 units were produced and which can be claimed to be the grandfather of the latest car. Historically, the Zagato versions of Aston’s were cars that were limited edition

and special enough for the swish set to find them more desirable than the already tempting standard Aston’s. So to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the partnership, it was an obvious choice to manufacture a landmark car that would mark the resurgence of Zagato as a design house and at the same time also establish the presence of the regenerating Aston Martin that, in the past couple of decades, had gone through enough highs and lows of its own before attaining stability, renewed interest in its products and, most important of all, a diverse product portfolio. However, the primary point is, the latest Aston Martin Zagato is a product to marvel at not only from the styling perspective, which, like all things Zagato, is outstanding

but also because it signals a resurgence of a confident and competitive British sports car company and their aim to make a mark in the market. The result of that is an automobile that captures the imagination of any human being looking at it, draped in an evocative shape and fitted with their typical ‘doublebubble’ roof and is powered by a 6.0-litre V12 engine putting out 510bhp, powering the car to a top speed of 305kmph. The Zagato with its phenomenal styling, retro touches and spectacular sound and looks ensure that when exhibited amongst its competitor’s it stands head and shoulders above the competition and delivers the package one expects from a custom, luxury Italian automobile.

indulge in a few rounds of golf (there are 23 different golf courses in and around the town!) or trekking, in the winters they can indulge is skiing in the 168 kilometres of slopes available to them!

THE

thing that one notices about Europe and especially the more luxurious parts of it is the scenery, the infrastructure and the attention to detail that one gets to witness. Sure, the frequent traveller amongst us does get to visit many a continent and the varied hospitality in each region but there is something else about spending one’s leisure time or heck, even work time in a luxurious resort in the South of France or in the Alps. And that was exactly what I got an opportunity to do a few months ago when the weather in the supposed European summer oscillated between “Damn, what a sunny and wonderful afternoon” to “bloody hell, will this friggin’ rain ever stop!” But given the locales one is surrounded by (South Germany and the Austrian Alps if one must ask) it was an absolutely pleasing

The highlight of the trip of course was the stay in A.Rosa resorts located in the Austrian Alps amongst the small hill station of Kitzbuehel which has in the past few years become the holiday destination of choice amongst German and Austrian tourists and too the swish, wealthy set. The town of Kitzbuehel though, remains an absolute charm with it’s small town feel and just feeling of camaraderie which somehow even the best big cities can never reproduce.

And there situated on top of a hill and spread over a vast area is the resort, A.Rosa. Not only is the resort an absolutely fantastic property with beautiful architecture overlooking the in-house golf course to relax in but it also offers a tremendous mix of leisure and holiday activities that would attract consumers and visitors. And they offer a wide variety of services to cater to multiple sections of the crowd, so not only is there a 9-hole golf course for patrons to swing away in but it also boasts of artificial lakes and an astonishing 3000 sq metres of spa, which is in itself an attraction strong enough to swing the holiday destination decision in favour of A.Rosa!

The uniqueness of Kitzbuehel also lies in the fact that it is both a Summer as well as a Winter tourist destination so while in the summers tourists can enjoying the beautiful weather of the Alps and

BANDHGALAS WITH DENIMS>> CHIC BOWTIE >> FORMALLY BLACK>> RAGING JODHPURS>> CHECKS AND TIES >> ADD THAT HEIGHT

Wear & What

2

Menswear maverick and fashion expert Raghavendra Rathore’s conundrum counter I have always been impressed with bowties and the way they are being worn by biggest fashion icons. Could you please suggest me where I can buy a good one and what occasions are best suited for it?

Bowties emphasise the neck rather than the chest like a necktie and draw attention towards the face. Hence while purchasing a bowtie, one should consider the collar shape of the shirt to be worn and take the decision accordingly. Larger and smaller neckties can be worn less formally, but when correctly worn the width of the bow should be approximately the same as that of the collar or slightly less. Occasions such as proms, black-and-white events or even theme parties, can be appropriate for wearing a bowtie.

3

Should bandhgalas be only worn with same fabric trousers? Is there anyway to mix and match it with different lowers? The bandhgala jacket offers a large bandwidth of options for the lowers, it works equally well with denims to a formal pair of trousers. It is only the matter of how well one is able to coordinate both in terms of colour and more importantly the occasion.

Apart from the usual black and brown colours, what other shades could I look for while buying formal shoes? Black and brown would be the ideal options when considering formal shoes, since they would be the classic option to opt for and would complement just about any formal attire.

4

Jodhpur pants are a rage these days. I would love to try them but could you suggest some new things to pair it up with and give an edgier look? Jodhpur breeches can be worn with anything on the top as long as the length of the top attire is correct. The top length should ideally reach below the crotch area. You can never go wrong with wearing a good pair of Kolhapur sandals to complete the look.

I like wearing check-shirts to my workplace but always get confused while picking up a necktie with them. What kind of neckties would go with checks? A tie that uses the same dominant colours of the shirt would be the ideal way to coordinate both. One could even opt for ties with polka dots, paisley and box patterns, since they would create a nice contrast to the checkered shirt.

6

I am on the heavier side and have been told to wear solids to make me look slimmer. But frankly I am bored of it. Can I experiment with prints and still look shapely? To break the monotony of solid shirts, it would be recommended to experiment with striped shirts, in which unbroken vertical stripes are one of the best ways to add an impression of height without seeming to try for it. Dress shirts that increase the perception of height ideally have striping that is narrow enough to not create broad empty spaces of monochrome but wide enough to be visible at a glance.

7

Leather seems to be ‘in’ in winters. Can it be pulled off at formal occasions? The leather jacket has always been associated with the rough and tough image of the biker guy. It has relevance for everyone from punks to police officers. Later versions during the 1980s focused more on the rocker jacket with stud detailing and classic belt-buckle style bottoms. Keeping in mind this image, leather could be pulled off on a slightly casual formal event, but should be kept aside when considering a formal occasion.
