AKHILA GUMMALLA agummalla@hawk.iit.edu Hello. May I introduce myself? At the moment, I am a second year graduate architecture student at Illinois Institute of Technology in the United States. My prior experiences and practice in this field have thought me to be creative in my thoughts and translate them with technicality in design and production stages. Summer’ 20 has been very productive in regards with my internship in a well established architecture firm. I was fortunate enough to expand my knowledge in my areas of intrest namely - Residential, Hospitality, Mixed use Design. I was trained to carry forward my learnings and use them to my advantage. In addition to Architecture, I am captured by designing furniture/objects, nature and photography. I implement these passions into my work.

SITE CIRCULATION/APPROACH NEIGHBOURING BUILDINGS - M-HUB The highest point of intrest in choosing this site for ‘The Plant’ is its modes of accessibility. The transportation of goods to this building can be achieved through the rail network/ by water or by road. Responding to neighbouring establishments, the pedestrian entry to the site is planned at a location that can be shared with the adjascent building. This path further leads us towards the water body. The service entry to the site is towards the south through an existing road.

SYNERGY The best way to let the visitor experience the essence of space is through establishing a Synergistic relationship between pause points and the programs. Tours have been one of the most important with respect to the program list of The Plant. Pause points (social spaces) let the user experience the space thoroughly by creating a sense of relief.
CONTINUANCE
SYNTHESIS Synthesis is the combination of work to form a whole. Varied small businesses of food processing form The Plant. To build an environment suitable for all the making spaces, with different requirements of scale and space, Design flexibility can allow the buildin g to evolve over time despite changes in operational requirements.

DRIVING FACTORS CONCEPT & STATERGY
SYMBIOSIS Firstly, We tried to establish a solid relationship amongst the given programs purely based on how one is dependent on the other and so on. This synergistic relationship enabled us to come up with the best possible arrangements, methods, and techniques unique to the context, thus forming a Symbiosis within itself.
MASSING FORM DEVELOPMENT
The buildings shape takes inspiration from an ellipse (a mathematical term for a curved plane surrounding two focal points) which is highly efficient in terms of the ratio of surface area to internal volume. The lack of corners reduces the visual profile of the buildings. “Circular living provides a balance of looking inward and outward, looking out at the natural environment and surroundings but then coming in again to the self and the hearth.

3D VIEW EAST SIDE The simple yet evident geometric form of the building provides us a maximum perimeter in terms of the surface, Thereby allowing us to program the desired fuctions such as restaurants/ breweries towards the water body. This statergy strengthens our concept of CONTINUANCE not only within the building’s internal spatial arrangement but also by connecting the inside with the outside.

LOO P S SUSTAINABLE SYSTEMS The unique characteristic of our design is working with respect to closed loops. The end products of one business/element is a potential resouces for another. The diagram below illustrates the same. This continous cycle facilitates a closed economy within the system.
SYSTEMS WASTE & WATER MANAGEMENT The project is equipped with systems that are developed to make the entire setup sustainable. Solid waste management and rain water recycling are two major aspects that maintain a strong sence of balance within our internal and external building loop cycles.

PROJECT INTENT With the rapid increase in the rate of homelessness and discrimination in America, there is an urgent need to resolve this issue. The design aims to create an environment that could safely shelter this community of people. The place can minimally contain/act as a work space for them. The goal is to try and let this group be able to rejoin the society.
SITE AND APPROACH The proposed site is located in Uptown, Chicago at the intersection of Lawrence Avenue and Sheridan. The main advantage is that the site is surrounded by roads on all four sides giving us an opportunity to locate multiple entry points. The neighbourhood is predominantly residential towars the Lawrence CTA Station, but as we move east towards the lake, becomes commercial and opens to a public park. The location of the site gives perfect views of the city and the lake.
CONCEPT Our concept “COMMUNITY gives these people a chance to self select and live with people of their kind so they feel safe, secure and part of a family. A group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. To create a space where everyone feels included helps in the overall growth and improvement of a person in-turn forming a community.

HOUSING -
CBD - Central Business District
The residences are a mix of group housing, single and family units strategically located in two different buildings.
Located centrally, typically designed to house the common programs, easily accesible by the inhabitants. It is the point of convegence that brings people in.
PARKS-
GARDENS-
Very similar to the function and working of the ones in a neighbourhood. These are like community parks taht engage people in various activities. Located in multiple levels to act as break out spaces between the 3 building masses in this project.
The gardens in the towers are the private spaces for people’s personal activities. Understanding that people are self - selecting, not all of them want to mingle with all kinds of people. Hence these spaces play an important role in the project.
PROGRAMMING The horizontal axis line (MAIN STREET) divides the building in two parts. Elevators, Stairases transport vertically while the Main street transports users horizontally. The building skin maximizes views of the lake, adjascent park.

DESIGN INTENT A Girls hostel has been proposed for Andhra University College of Engineering for women, which is estimated to provide shelter for 150 students. The site is located in a residential zone within the campus. The goal is to create a welcoming environment for students who stay away from home. One should feel safe, enjoy the time that they spend in this place. Lastly, The design produced must encourage interaction and blend with the surrounding environment.
EXECUTION The central idea for this project was to create an environment that could give students the same amount of comfort as that of a home. The buildings are oriented angularly in a way that every unit opens up to have a scienic view of the hills or to the experience the serenity of the park. Moreover, this statergy paired with other design elements - helped in enabelling more light and wind flow into the units thereby reducing the amount of intense solar radiations.
1.
A solid mass was extracted based on the profile of the site. Maintaining a ceratin distance, A similar form was then juxtaposed, to distinguish spaces.
2.
Voids are created to enable natural light, air into the building. Connecting corridors are introduced within these voids to maintain optimum distance to the means of egress.
3.
Connecting bridges are laid inbetween the two solid masses to encourage constant interaction between the users. This separation also allows equal distribution of light and air.
4.
According to the planning, balconies are introduced to every room . Each of it equipped with a sun breaker. Shading devices are introduced where ever necessary.

PLANNING MASSING
Keeping in mind the nature of the project, The main focus was to figure out the functioning of dorm rooms. The majority of the design problem will be solved with proper planning of these units. Therefore, I tried to figure out a solution that could effectively improvize the living space.

FEATURES DESIGN ELEMENTS COURTYARD The courtyard is the focal point – where the family has its meals, relaxes, socializes with relatives, neighbors, informal guests. For all intents and purposes, in a haveli, courtyard represents the heart of the household.
ALIGNMENT The most integral design stratergy in Rajasthani architecture is alignment of openings in a straight line. The superstitious belief that no opening should cut the path of each other is believed to carry the function of un-obstructed air flow and light.
PERFORATIONS Roshandaan (Partition walls with perforations) , which lets in natural light and lets out hot air, by installing a dual-function skylight-cum-window in the foyer or living room areas. They also acts as a barrier between private and semi-private spaces.
JHAROKHA (Bay Window)Jharokha, which is a crucial element in Rajasthani building design. The overtly decorative jharokha also protects residents from hours of harsh sunlight. These windows allow the person looking out of the window without being seen.
