CONCEPT: THE LONG RECTANGULAR SITE GAVE ME AN OPPORTUNITY TO MAXIMIZE THE EXPOSURE TO THE SUN. THE STUDY PODS ARE PROTUDED FROM THE BUILDING, COVERED BY A LOUVER SYSTEM THAT IS ANGLED TO ALLOW SUNLIGHT DURING WINTER, AND SHADING DURING SUMMER. IT ALSO PROVIDES A SPACE WITHIN THE DORM FOR PRIVATE CONVERSATIONS.

CONCEPT: THE MAIN INTENT OF THIS MASTERPLAN IS TO CONNECT THE RESIDENTIAL, INDUSTRIAL, AND TOURISM AREAS. TRAFFIC CIRCLES WITHIN THIS PLAN SERVE AS NODES; EACH LOCATED AT THE INTERSECTION OF MULTIPLE ZONINGS. THE TRIANGULAR URBAN PARK IS EXCAVATED, AND THE GROUND LEVEL AROUND IT IS SLOPED 2 DEGREES DOWNWARD TOWARD THE PARK. BECAUSE VIETNAM IS PRONE TO FLOODING, THE URBAN PARK ACTS AS A STORMWATER DRAINAGE DURING MONSOON SEASONS. ALSO, LIEN CHIEU IS KNOWN FOR THEIR HEAVY INDUSTRIES, WHICH MEANS WORKER HOUSING IS NECESSARY. WE ENVISION THE HOUSING TO HAVE SIMILAR FUNCTION AS A DORM, BUT WITH BREATHABILITY USING SLIDING LOUVER DOORS.

MIXED USE GYM FOR K-12 STUDENTS ARCH 750, PROF. SCHAR TEAM: CHRISTOPHER SONGVILAY
CONCEPT: OUR INSPIRATION COMES FROM THE DEVELOPMENT OF MO’OLELO. THIS HAWAIIAN TERM MEANS “SHARING KNOWLEDGE THROUGH STORYTELLING.” HOWEVER, IT IS SAID THAT EACH ISLAND HAD ITS OWN VERSION OF THE STORY, AND ELDERS ARE CONSIDERED WISE ONLY WHEN THEY ARE FAMILIAR WITH ALL PERSPECTIVES. SIMILIAR TO THIS IDEA, WE APPROACHED THIS CHALLENGE FROM DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS: SUN, WIND, AND RAIN. WHEN OUR SYSTEM FOR EACH ELEMENT OVERLAPS AT THE BREEZEWAY, THEN THE MO’OLELO OF THE BUILDING IS COMPLETED. THE BREEZEWAY IS AN INTERACTION SPACE FOR STUDENTS TO LEARN THE PROCESS OF BIOREMEDIATION AS THE RAINWATER SHEDS DOWN THE WALL. THE PIVOTAL DOORS AROUND THE COURT ALLOWS FLEXIBILITY FOR LARGER EVENTS.
