Throughout late spring, there is a small but sweet garden located in the outskirts of Odate. Within this garden is a beautiful display of Wisteria, or Fuji in Japanese (藤). This once used to be a private garden but now they have opened it up to the public! It has become so popular within the two years that it has opened that now they take parking reservations which can be made via online or by phone. It costs 1000 yen to enter and you receive a wisteria photo book upon entry.

Wisteria is a perennial vine that can live over 50 years. Historically, Wisteria symbolizes long-life and immortality. Wisteria is a genus of plants, legumes to be exact, which makes them a close relative to beans. They may appear like trees, but are actually woody vines and are typically found climbing walls, trellises or trees. In the Tonose garden, you can see wisteria hanging from trees and various forms of trellises. The garden is surrounded by rice fields on one side and a forest on the other. This gives you a picture-perfect background for photos. The wisteria in this garden also comes in various colors: white, pink and a lot of purple. The wisteria season is slowly ending but if you get the chance, try to check it out next year!
