CURRICULUM VITAE
Akitoshi KIMURA Nowadays, constructing architecture means destroying environment and history. In the chaos of times and objects, architect has to design contemporary architectures while thinking what is actually essential in its place. And also, I think architecture has to make people aware of something important in their everyday lives. Thinking thus, I want to be an architect who can respect the people, history and environment in the near future. I will contribute to the lives of people with my architecture.

Present Murin-an Garden
120 years ago, Murin-an garden was created with nature; water, earth, sunlight, vegetation. It has had authentic power of nature and healed human beings as naturalism Japanese garden. However, people today have lost sensitive eyes for what is essential. This makes people experience only superficial beauty in this garden. The project is the proposal of the architecture which give people intuition and sensitivity on their way to Murin-an garden. When people arrive at the garden, they see and feel pure nature while thinking about their beings and what is truly precious for their urban lives. 7
■ Murin-an Garden
In 1896, Murin-an garden was created beside the second house of Aritomo Yamagata who was the elder statesman in the Eastern Kyoto city. Garden was made by Jihei Ogawa VII ,who was the pioneer of Japanese modern garden, and said to be "NATURALISM Japanese garden". After Aritomo's death, Murin-an was designated as National Scenic Beauty in 1951 and has been a famous sightseeing spot.
■ Naturalism Garden
Murin-an garden is considered to be the Naturalism garden which consist of pure natural elements with no extra metaphorical expressions, different from typical Japanese garden in the past.

Various Vegetations
Using various kinds of vegetations which show the variable spectacle of nature between seasons.
■ "Flowing" from Lake Biwa
In 1890, Lake Biwa canal was constructed in order to develop industry of Kyoto by water supply. Murin-an was constructed soon after the completion of Lake Biwa canal. In this time, the water from Lake Biwa was adopted for significant naturalism element which express the "Flowing" by the force of gravity.

PRESENT CONDITION Today, original building is visited as sightseeing spot.
Garden is also visited just for sightseeing. And present-people lost sensitive eyes. So they can see only superficial beauty in garden.
The nature of garden couldn't show its power to such people. Thus Murin-an is regrettable to be left just as it is in contemporary city.
PROPOSAL An architecture which join urban to garden directly. It stimulates sensibility by its sequence of intuitive sceneries and pure natural elements.
Thanks to experiences through the architecture, people can visit garden with pure minds.
Murin-an garden can support people with its power of nature and be a significant place for this area as contemporary Japanese garden.
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN
In order to re-edit Murin-an garden and to repair its power as present urban garden, I design approach space along the mud wall which is the border between urban and garden. Sequence with detail design, which respect the relationships of new and old materials, makes people feel nothing but the meanings of nature and themselves.
MATERIALITY
In the project, I use mainly corten steel as architectural element. Corten steel oxidizes and gains a patina over time. It will let architecture blend into nature. On the other hand, corten steel emphasises the natural materials with visual and tactile sensation. With this nuance in the treatment of corten steel and others, it is impossible to understand the micro-context of Murin-an garden in relationship to the use and placement.

50 years ago, one modernism architecture appeared with people's strong expectations. Even though, it has been a significant part of scenery with people's memories and sentiments since then, it will be demolished soon after service stop. If it disappeared suddenly, familiar and dear scenery would also disappear. The project is the proposal for demolition process of this architecture in order to keep and succeed to the people's memories and sentiments for this architecture as invisible scenery. 23
1966-CONSTRUCTION Late1900s, the growth of population in the western Kyoto caused the expansion of water demand. In this situation, Yamanouchi water purification plant was planned as the core of this scheme to support the lives of people. In 1966, while many people waited eagerly for, this architecture was constructed with their strong expectations, and made the strong memory in this city at that time.
1966~2013-ACTIVE After completion of this architecture in 1966, it became the symbol of this city with its unique forms and faรงades. And also, it continued to support the people for about 50 years and stayed in people's hearts. With their memories and sentiments, it became a significant part of scenery in this city.
YAMANOUCHI WATER PURIFICATION PLANT One of the most famous modernism architecture in Japan, designed by Tomoya Masuda in 1966. 24
2013-DEMOLITION However, soon after the supply of water stopped in 2013, this architecture was destroyed in a flash without any connection with people in reality. By this demolition, the scenery and memories were also lost in their minds.
PROPOSAL
-DEMOLITION PROCESS-
APPROACH
How should we have treated Yamanouchi water purification plant ? I considered about this with the help of Tomoya Masuda's architectural thought.
In the project, with the temporary architecture, I will create "Invisible Scenery" in peoples hearts through demolition process. In the process, the temporary architecture will support to create various memories and times to think what is precious in temporal time and space. After this experience in this process, people will be able to have beautiful views for the future city.
An ambiguity between CONSTRUCTION and DESTRUCTION We can understand that "to destroy is irreversible, strong change of condition". -It means that it is possible to understand that to construction is same as to destroy. Oct.1970 Something which should be kept Something which should be kept is something which is impossible
to be lost in our minds, like the SCENERY or identity of our town. May.1966 SCENERY means... I mean SCENERY is the EYES which can distinguish what is precious. Tomoya Masuda: Designer of We shouldn't refer to the destruction of nature even though we neglect to have EYES. Yamanouchi water purification plant Jan.1973
What is precious is the invisible scenery created by memories and thoughts with Yamanouchi water purification plant. 25
PROCESS
2013
Significant architecture standing by people in this city. However, it is decided to be demolished in the near future.
26

Construct the temporary architecture which make existing buildings have temporal space like a park and viewing platform.
2018
Remove the existing buildings. As figure and ground reversal, void will come into being in exchange for existing buildings.

2018
After removing only existing buildings, there are void space in the place where existing buildings was. Remaining temporary architecture emphasis the void and being of existing buildings.
I adopt the cubic lattice scaffold with the module of existing building,1200mm. Same module creates the space harmonized with existing building. And cubic lattice system shows significant spatial expressions which Tomoya Masuda needed for Japanese people, like semi-isolation, dim, geometrical and so on. By the construction of ramps and floorboards, the circulation and the place for the people would be created.

27 Elevation-2018
28
In 2015, temporary architecture appears around Yamanouchi water purification plant. There are various temporary place where people stay. People visit here and make the joyful memories and times to think of this architecture and their city.
29
In 2018, Yamanouchi water purification plant is demolished behind temporary architecture. This will create the void in exchange for existing buildings. This will make people feel sadness. However, this strong and vivid impression will make people think what is precious for their city.
30
In the future, there is no visible architecture, but there are hearts. Through the special experience, people have special memories in their minds. Their memories will support the city and be succeeded to the future. Yamanouchi water purification plant will be here as invisible scenery. 31
PROJECT 3
The library built 30 years ago has a problem of book-stacks shortage, even though it is still fit for service.
Bachelor Project in University of Hyogo in 2014
My proposal is not only solving the issue currently facing, but also converting into contemporary library. This is the renovation project aimed at continuing to be used for a long time, by the space for present-day, which is harmonized with existing space ,with new material.

In Japan, architecture have repeated to be built and dismantled since a long time ago. In present-day which the values of time are lost, I think architecture need "to build" and "to dismantle" within people's lives. As the memories build nests, this architecture will grow while storing people's memories. And then, this architecture will be the symbol of this city with enormous memories one day.
