As I have grown on the banks of a monsoon streams and experienced the brooklets, streams, rivers and lakes in my home town Kashmir we bring in a natural love and poetics of water in all over projects including this one. Rainwater Harvesting and Storm Water Management were the guiding principles for design. Each drop of water is harvested and eventually finds its way into a detention pond filled with aquatics. The overflow from which is connected to recharge the bore well. In this garden we brought in for the first time in our Northern Indian climates plants that find mention in ‘ayurveda’.

The client wanted a curvilinear garden. This large second home is designed for rental purpose and is spread over 2.5 acres on the outskirts of Delhi, with a large diversiy in plant pallette that are brought from various nurseries in North India.

Various mehods of integrating rain water harvesting in landscape design has always been an integral part of our approach to landscape. Hue Lemon grass has been used in an unusual way in the garden.

This is a farm house where people live as a joint family. The house and landscape followed every possible principle in Vastu Shastra. We integrated our environmental concerns within those principles. We brought into the gardens a pallete of plants that helped to restore the ecological cycle nourish the soil, bring back insect life, butterflies, birds, night insects and more. We fixed the soil further by sending back every drop of water into the ground to recharge the replenishing water cycle. We kept only a small part as turf for occasional parties and a large part of the gardens as agrarian landscape, for herbs and plants that are found in folk and traditional medicine. We saved all existing trees even though we had to worked with altered grade due to Vastu principles and designed the new landscape around it. We like to share this landscape where people live and enjoy every day of their lives in there garden.

As you enter the gate is a water fall and a screen of plants that seperates the garden and the outside world. The sound of water directs the people towards the pathway leading to the house you pause here and then turn to see a sculpture sitting there waiting for you. As you walk along the path, sound of overflow from the pool directs you to the house. The stone lattice screens the pool from the walkway yet the lattice teases you to find out what is behind. The screens, pathway, light

The pergola on top shades the walkway and the angle of the top louvers have been designed so that the adjoining house can’t look into the pool from top. As you would expect from us by now each drop of water is harvested by recharging into the ground not as recharge pits but as landscape elements. So the depression around the tree is just another function where the environment, aesthetics function and simplicity meet.

This is a residential project on an one acre lot with a joint family already living on it. The client wanted us to redesign the existing landscape with issues of water accumulation in the norther part of site, grey water discharge directly and its accumulation, a landscape without any character. They wanted a landscape that they would like to use - where the father and son would walk every morning or night and discuss work and and life. The earlier landscape had existing trees many of which we did not like but as is with any project we typically do not remove any tree. So we worked with the limitation of existing structure of the earlier landscape and enhanced it .
PLAN

The landscape celebrates and integrates rainwater harvesting and solves all issues of drainage and recharges every drop of water that falls in the garden. Waste water is biologically treated now from the kitchen and the septic tank and reuses in the agrarian landscape. With stone crafts people to bring the stone crafts into the Indian Landscape as paving material, as screens/ jallis, and in various other ways in the landscape, area for the lawn is minimized, naturalized or native shrubs are planted, lighting form an important part of the landscape. The clients enjoy and use the landscape and the gardens more than ever before and every member of the house finds a way to partake with it. The children have put the tables against the windows and now the clients don’t want to do anything in the interiors which will “spoil the view of the gardens from inside”. In the second phase the client wanted us to do the interiors to keep the ‘sacred’ experience of landscape undisturbed.

The brief for this project was to design a landscape on a two and a half acre lot on outskirt of the city for renting out the large house. The brief meant that it would be a generic client head of a corporate or a diplomat or an ex-pat. Such building and gardens are designed on a low budget. The gardens however were designed keeping in view our environmental concerns which meant addressing issues of water conservation, bio-diversity, wildlife issues and restoring the ecology in what ever possible way within the constraints of time and money. The project was completed in 2006 and we were able to photograph it again in 2008. However, with changing tenants - the character of landscape changes depending on how much care the tenant takes of the gardens. 24

This was a large residential project with constraint of a gas pipe line running through it. It had limitation of what could be planned within the setback of gas pipe line which could be ripped open every few years for repair. Many year back this place was a brick kiln and hence soil and texture was effected severely. The house is lowered from the ground and has access to the adjoining landscape. This consstraint meant that the garden had to be designed in such a way so as to prevent rain water duing monsoon effecting the lower spaces within these constraints the gardens and landscape are designed on an extremely low budget.

Spread on 2.5 acres this project came to us with earlier interventions of two landscape architects. So we had a more predetermined landscape in which we had to modify certain elements, create new gardens and planting changes through addition and alteration in existing pallette. The lawns were an existing part of landscape and through planting we created spatial definition and added character to the front and rear garden. In addition four smaller garden were created each with a distinct character including the arrival court sculptures inspired by Henry Moore.

The project is on a half an acre lot in Gurgaon for a joint family.Apart from addressing environmental issues like water harvesting, introducing native plants, herb garden, reducing paved area to minimaum, using only local material for construction working with stone crafts - the most unique thing was to reduce the lawn size and below 2m where the lawn was provided cooper pipes were provided for cooling the residence. The irrigation of the lawn helped to keep the soil temperature low. We work very hard to ensure that none of the services are exposed in the landscape and so no manhole, pipes, gully traps or rainwater harvesting pits will be seen - they are integrated as part of the landscape design 38

A series of open spaces have been reclaimed and encroached buildings have given way to public open spaces and movement system has been streamlined. One of the important concept was to create large continous parts of forest areas which connect the upper forest and the river Bagmati . River cleansing strategies were suggested . Afforestation of the hills apart from a plan that looked at each building , its character and physical condition. Strategies were suggested for adaptive use of the building , its restoration and redesign of the walled open spaces.

Sarnath near Benaras marks a landmark in the pilgrims places associated with Budha. Here about one hundred miles from Bodh Gaya, he came across the five ascetics he had practiced with for so long. There, in a deer park, he preached his first sermon, which is called “setting he wheel of the teaching in motion. He explained to them the Four Noble truths and the Eightfold Path. They became his very first disciples and the beginnings of the Sangha or community of monks. 76
This site for the Buddist Interpretation Centre with the Memorial haslayers of history attached to it and according to traditions the Chowkhadi Stupa site marks the place where Budha met his ascetics friends who became his disciples and proceeded to deliver the first sermons on the four Noble Truths, the Noble Eighfold Path, and the Middle Ways, three of the most important concepts of Buddhism. The following program has been generated and is partly guided by the restrictions imposed by ASI for any new building activity within 100 metres of protected monuments listed under it. the restrictions apply to new constructions from the fence of the monument however, it allows for landscape activity or development to be carried out within the restricted zone after the regulatory approval procedures.

Taj Ganj as it is known today was once the main bazaar, commercial district of Agra as historic accounts of Lahuri and Kando tell us ‘different kinds of merchandise from every land, varieties of goods from every country, all sorts of luxuries of the time and various kinds of necessities of civilization and comfortable living brought from all parts of the world’ were for sale in this market, flourishing under the imperial patronage. Kalim composed a poem on Agra devoting 26 verses to describe the abundance of drama in these lanes of the imperial bazaar, which along with the caravanserai and houses built by the merchants out side the periphery of the royal complex came to be recognized as a city in itself called Mumtazabad, city of Mumtaz. Built for utilitarian purposes the architecture of Taj Ganj is in a stark contrast to the paradisiacal architecture of mausoleum. Treated with less detail, it can suitably reconstructed with the help of Lahauri and Kando description of the premises. Their description of the complex explains the layout to be a square divided into four quadrants, by two streets runnig north-south and east-west, of unequal width. 80

The site had two parts one for housing and the main campus and is about 100 acres. The main feature was to bring the elements of landscape of Kashmir into the gardens in a stylized way while addressing the issues of water management, drainage, and celebrating the poetics of water through the gardens design.
The building were designed as a new typology that took into consideration surrounding context of the mountains, climate, sun and shadows through the year and working with traditional typology for present time and construction materials.

The story of the Great Arc was to be brought to life by the symbolic representation of the Great Trigonometrical Survey in the design of the Park. The north-south linear configuration of the Garden of The Great Arc was to be reminder of the journey undertaken by the intrepid surveyors from the southern tip of the Indian Peninsula to the Northern reaches of the subcontinent at the base of the Himalayas. In April 2014, an innovative inter-school volunteering program was concerned to promote the concept of urban greenery in Delhi, titled ‘ Friends for Change’ initiated by Disney India and implemented by CMS, New Delhi. I was one of the technical members hand holding CMS and Disney India (Friends for Change - FFC) taking through the project. TThe schools worked to incorporate suggestions of neighbouring residents, prepared street plays to create more awareness and engaged them in ways beyond our imagination. Students, parents, and RWA’s worked together for just four months and transformed the dilapidated parks into community assets. At every stage of redeveloping the park, the students learned and developed qualities of team work, compassion, creativity and conservation.

The research components were assessing the onground status of the park, understanding the ecological services that it is providing or has the potential to provide, its relationship with communities and community’s expectations from it. The environment education components are linking the theoretical environment science course curriculum imparted in schools to its practical on-ground applications. The management component involved enabling a corporation to practice sustainability and creating an enabling environment for school to extend its realm of responsibilities from building tomorrow’s citizens to also being a local citizen in the community in which it operates.
How successful has it been in terms of these components? To understand what is an ecological garden was a challenge even for horticulturists, gardens, schools, RWA’s. They were happy with a peripheral path and a lawn. Through many presentations and rejection of proposals we were able to make a little difference in this concept of ecological parks/gardens in Urban Area and implant this idea in the minds of people.

Our approach was to use drainage and water conservation as an approach to design and create a series of contiguous openspaces. The project stood out as a unique one because of this approach and got the approval primarily because of the best practices that were suggested for the open space design.

The brief for the project was interesting and out of the box which attracted us to the project and also we know the architects and the client from before but had not worked with them professionally. The idea was great and so we went all out to create an interesting landscape. A landscape that was contemporary and would provide space and room for lighting and for outdoor garden furniture. 110

We share with you the dilemma that we face as landscape architects. The budget for the project is done before hand or is done without consulting a landscape architect. Typically when proposed by an architect or contractor it can be way off. Like in many projects we invest a lot on the building but on soft services like project management we do not invest intelligently( good project managers are rare) and the budget goes off. In the end landscape budget is reduced to bare minimum. So all the efforts that a but in design, design development, working drawings and BOQ - go out of the window and then a compromise in Design starts.
