Ruins suggest noble thoughts to me; that everything decays and dies and passes away, only the works remains and time endures. What an old world it is! My path lies between two eternities. Wherever I cast my eyes I am reminded by the surrounding objects that everything comes to an end, and I become resigned to the shortness of my own life. What is my ephemeral existence as compared to that of this work which crumbles away, or to this valley which is being hollowing out, to this forest whose trees are falling, to those shattered buildings above my head? I see that even the marble of tombstones falls with dust, and shall I refuse to die, or expect a feeble tissue of flesh and muscle escape the doom which falls on bronze? A torrent is carrying on the nations one after another to a common abyss; and shall I, I alone, expect to reach the shore and stem the flood which is rushing past me? DENIS DIDEROT, Salon 1767
In the current market economy, conventional redevelopment at the Packard is unfeasible. The continued exuberance of Detroit’s scrapping industry has devalued the architecture to the point that demolition costs cannot be offset through metal recycling. In the face of imminent bankruptcy, city financing for demolition is a pipe dream. And though an aggressive recent media campaign has called for a mandatory knock down, one fact remains clear: without resources, the Packard isn’t going anywhere. If left untreated, its glacial decline will remain an urban foil – both materially for the residents living adjacent to the site and iconographically as an unsolicited monument to capital extraction. Now come fall 2013, the Packard Plant is going up for sale. The site’s impending foreclosure and auction make understanding Packard’s contemporary condition quite urgent. This interactive guide attempts to simply unravel the plant’s constructed logics in order to help speculate about possible future urbanities. We think it works best when considered collectively. We hope you enjoy.
INTRODUCTION
Detroit’s Packard Plant is coming undone. It’s been coming undone for more than half a century now. The result of all this fitful coming-undone-ness is a strange and provocative situation – not quite architecture, nor landscape – but a promiscuous hybrid that challenges our very notions of progress and urbanity.

EMERGENT PROGRAM uses that emerge out of contemporary environments and landscapes
SCRAPPER continuation of capital extraction within a vacated context
EMINENT DOMAIN the right of a government to take private property for public use upon payment of its fair market value
