SOMEWHERE IN-BETWEEN a parking space cafe + dwelling

in exploring relationships of objects in small spaces, students were tasked to create a live/work space to investigate the transformative potentials of unnoticed spaces in an increasingly urban context. “somewhere in between” explores the idea of space confinement by experimenting with different strategies of enclosures, asking the question of how humans perceive and experience space. situated in central jakarta, the project lies on the space of two parking spaces. date: 2021 course: architecture studio ii / ends 401 instructor: bill pechet, dolly sehr-wong

SITE jl pintu air v, jakarta, indonesia

site cars + motorcycles humans vegetation

ANALYSIS the site is situated in the middle of two circulation paths, cars and motorcycles on the northside and pedestrians on the southside. It is also surrounded by buildings that are mostly 3-storey tall and that are mainly retail businesses. understanding the spatial volume of the site, it became important for the structure to not be intrusive. additionally, the crowdedness of the area came to be seen as an opportunity for program activation.

the spaces within are expanded with the application of different “wall types” as a strategy of blending the interior with the exterior. this inevitably create different view making possibilities, amplifying the quality of spaces within. For instance, the extensive skylight on the cafe expands the space vertically and acts to become a breath of fresh air to the bustling city neighborhood.

STRATHCONA HOUSE a home for two

the “strathcona house” is a house designed for “ar” and his cousin “zi”. having grown up together, “ar” and “zi” share a lot of similarities between them. their relationship became the starting point to the process of designing the house. the sizing of spaces is informed by the degree of importance of each space to the occupant. the end product is a house with an expansive gathering space that connects the “private” living space (bedrooms) and the more “public” space of the house (the music lounge and creative space/studio). evoking the sense of memory, the overall aesthetic of the house is inspired by the “ar” and “zi”’s home of Indonesia. “ar” and “zi”’s personalities and relationship are further characterised through the front façade of the house. two plain separate boxes “joined” by the gap between them. Simplistic and minimalist. date: 2020 course: architecture studio i / ends 302 instructor: travis hanks, dolly sehr-wong

relationship diagram: shared spaces, independent spaces

“ar” and “zi” prefer being at home and have friends to come over. thus, the "public" programs in the house is equally as important as the "private" programs.

the overlapping squares of the two dimensional diagram is translated into an architectural space of shared programs creating a blend of private and public spaces.

SPATIAL DIVISION public vs. private programs are divided in levels. programs that are more "public" are located on the ground floor and are given an extensive space. programs that are private (e.g. Bedrooms) are located on the first floor. programs like the music studio (14) that require the participation of the "public" but need a more "private" area is located in the basement of the "public" section of the house.

BETWEEN THE PLANES a pavillion

as an exercise of spatial thinking, this module challenges students to develop a three-dimensional sequence of solid and void from the given plans above. the volume would only be constructed from the information given from the plans. interpretations are flexible as plans are abstract. “between the planes” approaches the task with a question of how humans come to engage with space. experimenting with materials and forms, the structure aims to create unscripted modes of occupying space. subtracting a defined program allows us to reflect upon the relationship between ourselves and the surrounding environment. this idea was the core foundation for the design of this project. date: 2020 course: architecture studio i / ends 302 instructor: travis hanks, dolly sehr-wong

28

the given plan diagrams are presented as abstract two-dimensional drawings. the two-dimensional plan lines are used as tools for formal explorations and spatial experimentations. The organization, orientation, and arragement of the plan will define the spaces between the planes.

AXONOMETRY the duality of material between soft (fabric) and hard (wood) explores the creation of spatial and visual thresholds. the ambiguity of the forms liberates the occupants’ engagement with the environment.

TEA FOR TWO an urban street furniture

investigating strategies of activating street sharing environments, this project modifies a mobile shelving unit through material and structural manipulations to design a miniature mobile environment. “Tea for Two” is a portable tea drinking set that roams around the city offering a calming break to the busy city life. Constructed like a puzzle, the drinking set is deployed out of a shelving unit which functions as a storage in it’s “closed” position. Inspired by Japanese tea house design, the structure is made low to the ground to evoke a sense of humble-ness and serenity. date: 2021 course: architecture studio ii / ends 402 instructor: bill pechet, long dinh

THE FLUFFY MR. ALIEN an exquisite corpse

Exploring materiality and the methods of joinery, students were tasked to combine two household objects to create a kit-bashed “exquisite corpse”. Within its final formation, the objects must still retain their original function as it were before the combination. “The Fluffy Mr. Alien” began with an exploration of material limits and possibilities (pillows and earphones), as well as experimenting with possible combinations and arrangements. At the end I ended up with an arrangement of pillows that would allow the contraption to become a furniture to lean on or lay against whilst listening to music through the extruding earphones coming out from within. The bottom portion is made up of pillows that are arranged in a circular manner, joined by bolts. The pillows are slightly curved inwards to provide for a better backrest for sitting. Stuffed inside and outwards are more pillows and earphones to provide for cushioning and music. date: 2021 course: materials and methods of construction / ends 411 instructor: bill pechet

people and places.

I have always been fascinated by people. There is a poetic relationship in the way us, humans, interact with each other, the environment, and ourselves. Photography has become the creative outlet for me in pursuing this curiosity of human life. Not only has it helped me hone my spatial senses, it kindles within me a sense of unparalleled joy when looking at a beautifully taken photograph. The following is a collection of photographs that I took over the years and in different places. Within them I hope to communicate stories and emotions.
