We visit the Yamaha Motor Italia Team, or more precisely the WSBK team, which has been using Akrapovi exhaust systems for two years. Not just anyone is allowed into their sacred territory! That’s what makes it all the more interesting to be inside the heavily secured building and even more interesting to have a look into the background of the team’s activities.

We are pleased to present you with a new issue of Sharp End magazine, the second one in a row. The ice has been broken and the rst reactions have been extremely favourable; the debut issue was genuinely well received. Sharp End really took hold with readers and buyers of our products alike. They appreciated it both as the corporate magazine of Akrapovi and even more so as a lifestyle magazine. Moreover, the magazine was in such high demand that we quickly ran out of copies. Hmm… Kind of like what’s happening to our exhaust systems. A coincidence? Absolutely not! However, all the positive sides of a product and its rapid development are sadly linked to events which we like to generally call “problems”. We are no exception to this rule. Akrapovi closed 2007 successfully. At least that’s what the dull statistics and numbers tell us. If I may be permitted to make a joke: Every mother is happy to see her child grow rapidly, but this means that new shoes have to be bought every six months! Well, the same is happening to us! The growth of revenue in 2007 reached 31% and exceeded expectations by 14%. The number of employees at the end of last year stood at 401. Today we’ve reached 429. How many of us will here be by the end of the year? Who knows? But many more, I am sure … The market demand for our products is surpassing our planned capacities. And I could go on and on. Many people would not be convinced that these are genuine “problems”. But unfortunately, this is not so.

The explosive growth of the company requires a lot of sacrices, patience and understanding. This is why the company is now focusing on consolidating its business! We have successfully concluded our project to update our corporate image and are employing marketing activities to bolster our brand value. But we’re not only increasing our output or number of employees, we’re also looking to make our mark in other areas. We’re aiming to expand in the near future into two additional sectors – the development of cutting-edge car exhausts and the manufacture of various carbon bre products. Our vision is clear: “To remain the leading manufacturer of exhaust systems for motorcycles and to expand our range with new products that conform to the highest quality and technological standards.” Well, there’s also something else we’ll do … Publish an interesting magazine, such as the one you’re holding in your hands, twice a year. We wish you a pleasant read. Marko Adami CEO / Managing Director

EICMA 2007 photography Bor Dobrin

Completely Redone in Milan Milan, one of the capitals of fashion industry and design, hosted last autumn the jubilee edition of the EICMA 2007 Bicycle and Motorcycle exhibition, where Akrapovi unveiled its new corporate image to the global public.

Clear lines and elements the colour of snow, used at the exhibition area, were placed in stark contrast to the red colour of the base. The design of the exhibition area showcased the company’s dedication to aesthetics and details. The basic design and the elements were inspired by the environment that surrounds us. The company was taught by the best teacher – nature – and upgraded its knowledge through puried design and architecture. The main pavilion, ‘the house’, is full of irregular shapes and sharp edges that reect Akrapovi ’s understanding of innovative motor design trends. Seemingly uncomplicated yet intricate: this was the idea that Akrapovi wanted this unique multi-purpose building to radiate to the onlookers. The building also proves that the company takes design very seriously. The new range of exhausts was placed on

a tree, made completely of titanium, one of the three most used materials by the company. The stands themselves are white, bulky, rounded objects, reminiscent of boulders that were worn and deposited by a river. The exhibition ‘snake’ which wriggles its way through Akrapovi ’s exhibition arena, is in reality a winding road, alongside which carefully selected motorcycles are placed. We had the privilege and the honour to showcase our exhaust systems on three motorcycles that were up there with the best in the 2007 racing season. These guests of honour at the exhibition space were: Yamaha YZF-R1, with which Noriyuki Haga and Troy Corser won the Superbike World Manufacturers Championships in 2007; Ducati 1098 of Nicole Canepa who won the Superstock 1000 Cup; and the Suzuki RM-Z 450 of Steve Ramone, World MX1 Champion.

We also believe that the display cabinets gave the exhibition area a special charm and completeness. Snow white tubes, cut in half and placed on long metal stands were seemingly scattered randomly. They quietly radiated their clear lines and showcased their black rubies – carbon pieces for sports motorcycles – through the Plexiglas to the visitors and passers-by. As the company learns from nature it also plans to continue respecting it. Akrapovi sees evolution as the most natural of natural processes. Evolution also means that you never stop developing and this lies at the very core of the company’s philosophy.

Akrapovi Voted “Best Brand 2007 and 2008”

The Akrapovi company was voted the best brand for exhaust systems by nearly half of the 17,346 readers who took part in the “Best Brand 2007” vote, organised by the Swiss Motor Sport Aktuell magazine in the autumn of 2007. Their opinion was echoed by 35,148 readers of the largest motorcycle magazine, Germany’s Motorrad, who also voted Akrapovi exhaust systems to be their favourite in the magazine’s “Best Brand 2008” vote. The Akrapovi company is very pleased with these results. It is especially proud that the company’s exhaust systems had been endorsed by 48.1% of the Motor Sport Aktuell readers and, even better, by 58.3% of the readers of Motorrad. The success is so much the greater because Akrapovi got the Motorrad readers’ acclaim for the third year in a row. These excellent results serve to reafrm Akrapovi ’s business strategy and the company’s reputation in the world markets and at the same time present an incentive and proof of the quality of work by all of the company’s employees.

Where do your jobs connect? What are the links between architecture and exhaust manufacture?

However, you have created more than just the development facility for Akrapovi .

I was initiated into exhaust manufacture 20 years ago, and have been following it directly from its source ever since then. I look at it more from a perspective of an artist. New technologies, the use of computer-aided modelling and simulations have brought great changes to the shapes and materials used. The same goes for motorcycles. Design and corporate images are increasingly coming into focus. It’s about visibility. I’ve been a fan of KTM’s design in recent years and I believe that these motorcycles truly are at the pinnacle of designing achievements. From the engine to the colours and the exhibition area, it’s all unmistakeably KTM. They have a brilliant design strategy and presence that would enrapture even the most demanding designer and architect.

Yes. After designing the development facility, I also designed the newest completed building, the testing plant. This is the area where products, meaning motorcycles and, more recently, car exhaust systems are tested on measurement tables. The testing plant is partially dug in, which I believe is environmentally friendly. Such a design makes the building less intrusive; it also improves the absorption of noise, created during the testing of vehicles and motorcycles. The position of the building means it only requires a single façade. This is more of a supporting wall and gives the building a more closed look. The façade is divided into three parts, which hide different facilities. At rst, the building is closed with the light entering from the green roof and the parallel clearstory. In the middle, the façade is constructed around external compressors that are built into the building and screened by an iron mesh. The nal third of the building houses ofces in two stories and the façade there is made of glass.

You took part in rehauling the Akrapovi corporate image and the design facility within the Akrapovi factory was also conceived by you. We are talking about industrial facilities that were constructed around the original concrete building in Ivan na Gorica’s industrial park. The building in Ivan na Gorica is not presumptuous but tries to convey that it houses a technologically advanced research

Did you also design the testing plant’s interior? Yes. I’m especially interested in interior design, namely how to place the living or working quarters into the existing shell as functionally as possible. I thought at the

will partly dictate where my design will go. The construction and the façade will only depend on this. I’m searching for optimum solutions, because the quick growth of the company means that there is always insufcient space. The parking lot of the new building will, for example, be located on the roof. I would also like to include new developments in alternative energy sources, such as photovoltaic solar arrays and solar cells. I believe that I will also get to use the newest generation of energy saving bulbs.

What do you do when you are not sitting behind the drawing board or the computer? Uff…Such moments are few and far between. I love to work and I work a lot. Actually work pretty much lls my entire day. The children are old enough now that they get along ne by themselves so I have more and more time for work. And I like that. I’m more of a poetic person by nature and lean towards smaller design projects. I like to design custom-made furniture or an individual piece that I then build into the interior, for example doors or steps. When doing this I always avoid existing solutions. In the past, I also worked in graphic design and did landscape gardening. When my children were still little, I could not dedicate myself to architecture to the extent I wanted so I studied landscape gardening. When I attended various motorcycle races with my husband, I always looked at various architectural styles and famous gardens. I was really happy to accompany him to the Suzuka 8 Hours, because I just could not get enough of the Kyoto gardens. The Japanese are really masters in the art of gardening.

18 

You mentioned graphic design and you also took part in rehauling the Akrapovi corporate image. company which is neck to neck with the world’s best. While it’s not completely new – it’s been standing for some years now -- it doesn’t look surreal or futuristic, it’s still a modern creation that communicates its high-tech insides from the outside. This is also how the building is perceived by visiting professionals. The development facility doesn’t want to be intrusive even though it expresses the character of an industrial building in agricultural surroundings. Its ‘high-tech’ look makes it airy as it leans against the slope. I used ordinary materials: iron, glass and aluminium plates. The TRIMO façade meanwhile gives the building its nal look. A parallel clearstory is placed just below the roof, creating the additional effect of airiness. A long panoramic window, screened by a façade panel, provides views of nature and creates a dynamic impression.

start that creating the entire building would be easier than just doing interior design, because I believed such a design would require much more imagination and resourcefulness. Well, recently I have found new challenges in designing the entire building, the exterior as well as the interior, which have to be extremely compatible. I also designed the interior for the upstairs ofces for the Akrapovi testing plant, creating my own style of ofce furniture that can be supplemented with products by renowned designer brands and lights by recognised manufacturers.

What about your future challenges. Are you going to do more work for Akrapovi ? I am currently working on their production and logistics centre. Because this is a large building, the high construction costs

I participate in creating the marketing image of the company. I cooperate with graphic and webpage designers as well as with photographers and architect designers, such as the Monochrome company, which used a very original design for the two exhibition pavilions which are used by Akrapovi at fairs. We collaborate with renowned photographers in interesting photo sessions during which we can showcase the design of an individual product from its conception to its production in a quality and original way. Famous graphic artists design the calendar every year and the calendar is becoming an increasingly interesting and recognised business gift of the Akrapovi company. Last year we also rehauled the image of the brand, because we realised that we had to.

Meeting place, also including an ofce of Slavko Trstenjak, the head of motorsport R&D.

MILOŠ EBNER “Both companies are characterised by their ability to get that ‘extra something’ and breathe new life into their seemingly unattractive industries; to utilise development and a feel for aesthetics to create a powerful and acclaimed trademark. This is why cooperation between such companies always presents an opportunity to learn something new and arrive at a result that opens up new prospects. Such above-average results can be seen in the development facility of the Akrapovi company, which was conferred with the Trimo architectural award alongside numerous other recognitions. I believe that at the moment of its creation, the project was one of the rst truly successful examples of a new architectural approach towards designing innovative business and manufacturing facilities. You can really feel that culture of innovation if you visit the Akrapovi company today. One of the main architects of this culture is undoubtedly Slavojka Akrapovi , whose architectural and artistic approach not only takes into account, but virtually demands, high aesthetic perfection, while refraining from ‘ivory tower’ impracticality and maintaining direct connection with the need for efciency and feasibility of projects. This unusual combination of a ‘soft’ artistic approach in a seemingly ‘stolid’ high-tech company represents the inestimable contribution by Slavojka Akrapovi that is immediately felt and admired by outside partners when cooperating with Mrs. Slavojka and the Akrapovi company.”

“I believe that there is a motorcycle racer somewhere deep inside everyone of us. In his or her subconscious. I believe it all originates from a sort of primeval need for being wild. Riding a motorcycle is the modern version of riding a horse. When I met my husband he was a sworn motorcycle rider and racer. I experienced a decade of wild motorcycle rides but then we decided to let go of motorcycles, mainly because of the children. Well, now that our son had become an avid motocross racer, it no longer pays to feign ignorance. So I believe that we will nd time with my husband to travel and ride motorcycles.”

design and R&D Director, Trimo d.d.: “Both companies are characterised by their ability to get that ‘extra something’ and breathe new life into their seemingly unattractive industries; to utilise development and a feel for aesthetics to create a powerful and acclaimed trademark.

Scandinavian biggest brewery Carlsberg has introduced something old in something new. It’s called Vintage No.1 and is now the most expensive beer in the world, selling for a tad over EUR 260 a bottle. It has a unique taste with hints of vanilla and caramel, produces very little foam and you can tell it apart from other beers by its chestnut brown colour. In 2008 only 600 bottles of this 10.5 percent proof beer (yes, it will get you drunk) will be made available, however new versions are expected to hit the market in the future. If you think you’ll be tasting this luxurious beer, Carlsberg experts say that Vintage No.1 goes with cheese and desserts. Details > www.carlsberg.com

Cycle world

by Peter Kav i photography Yamaha Racing

This is the story of a boy who followed his dream. He grew up in a place that is difficult to find on a map, left his country as a teenager and never stopped following his goal – to become the best in the world!

“Dad I want to do motocross”

That boy’s name is Chad Reed. He is one of the few racers in the world who can boast of having fought and defeated such big names in motocross and supercross as Ricky Carmichael, Stefan Everts, James Stewart, Michael Pichon and Kevin Windham. When the 18-year old from the small town of Kurri Kurri, also the birthplace of Moto GP Champion Casey Stoner, left his family in 2001, he told his father: “Dad, I’ll be a motocross star, it’s all I want to do and I’ll be the best in the world!” These daring words and determination were regularly put to the test from that moment on, but his achievements conrm that a will of iron can overcome anything. Chad’s rst motorcycle experience came very early. He was racing around with a tiny Yamaha PW 50 at the age of three, and he still holds the motorbike in high esteem: “This little bike is indestructible. It was my rst motorcycle and I still race it against my friends at the mini motocross track behind the house.” His success in racing is also closely linked to Yamaha as he spent most of his professional career riding motorcycles made by the Japanese company. He only spent a single season, the one when he raced in the GP’s 250 ccm category, on a Kawasaki. His unfortunately

deceased team manager, Jan De Groot, recognized a future winner in the young boy from Australia. Jan had an eye for talent and undoubtedly left an indelible mark on Chad. He gave the unknown Australian, who, truth be told, already had two titles of Australian Supercross Champion under his belt, a factory bike, the best crew of mechanics around and a ticket to motocross prime time.

American dreams

But Chad didn’t have it easy from the start. Indeed, he barely qualied for his rst race! But hours upon hours of training at the most demanding dirt tracks in Europe allowed him to progress so rapidly that he only failed to beat multiple World Champion Michael Pichon of France at the close of the 2001 World Grand Prix season. But Chad did not want to spring roots in Europe and only try to win the World Motocross Champion title. His eyes were constantly xed on America, the home of supercross. It was this attractive form of racing in front of tens of thousands of spectators on articial tracks in the arenas of America’s biggest stadiums that drew him like a magnet. But yet again he had to prove himself, despite achieving excellent results in Australia and Europe. And once again, he did not disappoint! He shocked the American public and took the title of AMA East Coast Supercross Champion in the 125 ccm category with his 250 ccm four-stroke Yamaha.

He also made an outstanding third-place nish in the nal standings of the Outdoor Nationals. His career has been skyrocketing ever since and despite suffering injuries, he boasts the title of AMA Supercross Champion, three second places in the nal standings and one third place. His results make him one of the top supercross racers of modern times. He also bagged a second and a third place in outdoor motocross. The hard-won status and achievements have allowed Chad to set up a private team with Yamaha’s full support. He’s only the second racer to be able to do so, after the legendary Jeremy McGrath. McGrath is Chad’s role model and Chad mimicked McGrath’s path in focusing on supercross.

Golf – His Second Biggest Love During the American outdoor motocross season, which takes place between late spring and early autumn, Chad takes a break to do what he likes best apart from racing. He and his wife Ellie use the time for visiting family in Australia and for hobbies. Chad is also a skilled surfer. This is somewhat of a given, being a born Australian. Asked what he would do if he was not in racing, he made a

very clear reply: “I’d play golf!” Yes, CR (as he is known among his fellow racers) is crazy about golf. His favourite day goes something like this: eat, sleep, ride a motorcycle and play golf. His most precious possessions are not cars (of which he has seven), but golf clubs.

“Voziti se z motorjem in igrati golf!” To je zgodba o aboriginskem fantu, ki je sledil svojim sanjam. Še kot najstnik je zapustil rodno Avstralijo in družino ter odšel jasnemu cilju naproti. Želim postati najboljši motokrosist na svetu!

Sleepyhead Talking about peculiarities, Chad has also revealed another secret: He has a ritual before every race – a short power nap. He calls himself a real sleepyhead. But there is more to him than everybody knows. He is part Australian Aborigine -- the rst settlers of the continent down under. This makes him a unique role model for young American Indians whom he visits at special meetings. His project of raising awareness of Indian youth; to get them to stay on track and believe in themselves, their difference and abilities, is also supported by the San Mannuel Band of Mission Indians, the chief sponsor. And who could serve as a better role model for youth than a unique supercross hero!

The car was insured and the damage (not counting the van) was estimated to more than a million euros.
