AKRON ZIPS

What is a Zip? One of the unique nicknames in all of intercollegiate athletics belongs to The University of Akron. Originally Zippers, athletic director Kenneth “Red” Cochrane officially shortened the nickname to the Zips in 1950. Twenty-five years earlier a campus-wide contest had been conducted to choose a nickname for The University’s athletics teams. Suggestions submitted by students, faculty, and alumni included Golden Blue Devils, Tip Toppers, Rubbernecks, Hillbillies, Kangaroos and Cheveliers. The winner, freshman Margaret Hamlin, received a prize of $10 for Zippers, a $6 pair of rubber overshoes and a brand name of the BF Goodrich Company. The evolution of Zippy, UA’s mascot, began 40 years ago when the student council decided the University needed a mascot. “Zippy” the kangaroo was officially declared the school’s mascot on May 1, 1953. In 2007, Zippy was named the Capital One National Mascot of the Year.

HEAD COACH NITTAYA KLIM

Nittaya Klim

amongst the team. Our future in the pool is very bright under her leadership.”

Head Coach Sixth Season Emory, 1992

Nittaya Klim is in her sixth season at the helm of Akron swimming and diving, a program she took over in April of 2006. Klim has built a competitive program with a pair of UA records falling in 2010-11, notably freshman Catherine Carr’s demolition of the 400-yard individual medley mark by more than six seconds at the 2011 Mid-American Conference Championships. UA also placed four student-athletes - Jayne Malloy, Courtney Fischbach, Leeanna Hoover, and Meghan Bowling - on the Academic All-MAC team in 2011. Klim’s teams have placed a total of 14 athletes on the Academic All-MAC squad during her tenure. In the 2009-10 season, Klim mentored Kendall Karchner to a MAC 200-yard backstroke title, and placed three swimmers on All-MAC Teams. Karchner received first team honors, while senior Steph Zielinski and freshman Katie Miles were named to the second team.

In 2008-09, the Zips’ program posted a 6-6 mark in dual matches, and placed third in the annual Zippy Invitational. Akron once again placed fifth in the MAC Championships, shattering 13 school records in the process. Overall, the 2008-09 UA swimming and diving squad broke 14 school records and Katie Carter and Zielinski were named first team and second team All-MAC, respectively. Carter and Zielinski also earned Academic All-MAC honors for their work in the classroom. The 2007-08 campaign was highlighted by Zielinski’s first of three all-conference seasons, as the standout was named to the All-MAC second team . In her first season in charge, Klim guided Akron to a 5-7 dual meet record and matched its highest ever MAC Championship finish, taking fifth. “Coach Klim has done a great job building her program here at Akron.” Akron Director of Athletics Tom Wistrcill said. “She is a good recruiter and her student-athletes have a great experience being part of the team. Her squad always does well in the classroom and Nittaya promotes a real sense of family

Prior to her time at Penn State, she spent two seasons on the staff at the University of Pennsylvania, where she coached one individual Ivy League champion in 2002. Before coaching at Penn, Klim spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Villanova, helping the Wildcats to backto-back Big East Conference Championships and an NCAA individual champion. Klim was a decorated swimmer, earning All-American honors at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. She earned All-American honors three times during her collegiate career and graduated in 1992 with a bachelor of arts in English. Klim and her husband, Joe, have a four-year old son, Andrew.

Additionally, the 2009-10 season saw six individual UA records fall, while three relay records were broken. Klim also continued to push excellence in the classroom, as Karchner, Zielinski, Hoover, and Madelyn Robinson were all named to the Academic All-MAC squad. The 2009-10 squad won five dual meets as well as taking third place at the Zippy Invitational and fifth at the MAC Championships.

During her time in State College, Klim served as the recruiting coordinator under head coach Bill Dorenkott, was an instructor at Penn State’s Summer Swim Camp and the USA Swimming Select Distance Camp Director. Klim was instrumental in bringing many of PSU’s 37 NCAA qualifiers, 10 AllAmericans, 25 honorable mention All-Americans, nine individual Big Ten Champions and eight Olympic Trials qualifiers to Happy Valley.

AKRON SWIMMING & DIVING STAFF STUDENT-ATHLETES

• Has coached nine All-MAC Swimmers

Klim - who is just the second head coach in the program’s history - came to Akron after spending four years as an assistant coach with the Penn State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams. She aided a Nittany Lion women’s team that won back-to-back Big Ten titles in 2005 and 2006. She also helped 10 student-athletes earn All-American status.

Diving Coach 14th Season Akron, 1989

• Three-time MAC Diving Coach of the Year.

where he mentored six state finalists and seven state qulifiers. While in college, he headed the diving program at Akron Firestone High School. Medvedeff has also worked with U.S. divers throughout Europe and has extensive OHSAA experience in Northeast Ohio. Medvedeff graduated from the University of Akron in 1989 with a degree in psychology and a minor in business administration.

THE MEDVEDEFF FILE Head diving coach Chris Medvedeff is in his 14th season guiding The University of Akron divers. The only diving coach in school history, Medvedeff has built one of the most competitive diving programs in the MidAmerican Conference. Medvedeff’s charges continued to make their mark on the MAC landscape in 2010-11, with Akron divers taking three of the top five spots in the 3-meter springboard and three of the top seven spots in the 1-meter at the MAC Championships. Junior Leeanna Hoover lead the way with a third-place showing in the 3-meter. Freshman Carla McNamara and senior Amanda Angeloff also took a pair of top-tens at the MAC meet. McNamara had a standout rookie season, culminating in a pair of top-20 showings at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships. The 2009-10 season saw two Akron divers place in the top ten in both the one-meter and three-meter events at the MAC Championships. Hoover took fourth in the three-meter and ninth in the one-meter, and Amanda Angeloff placed ninth in the three-meter and tenth in the one-meter. The season prior, Medvedeff was named MAC Diving Coach of the Year for the third time during his tenure at Akron, after mentoring Katie Carter to a sweep of the diving competitions at the 2009 MAC Championships. Carter’s pair of wins were the second and third conference championships of her career, making her the most decorated diver in UA history. The 2008-09 season saw Carter set school records in both diving events, scoring 311.00 in the one-meter springboard at the MAC Championships and 339.68 on the three-meter board against Marshall. Additionally, Medvedeff mentored five divers into the top-15 at the MAC Championships. Under Medvedeff’s tutelage, Carter became one of the most gifted divers in the Mid-American Conference. As a freshman Carter smashed the school and MAC Championship record in the three-meter springboard to upset a very talented field. Carter’s win was the fourth conference championship by a MAC diver in the program’s short history. During the 2004-05 season, Medvedeff was once again named MAC Diving Coach of the Year after leading the Zips’ divers to one of the best showings in program history at the conference championship. Lindsey Powers earned MAC Co-Diver of the Year honors and won the threemeter title and Melissa Holbach finished in the top-eight. UA divers totaled 15 event wins during 2004-05, set five individual career bests, two school records, two pool records, and one meet record. Medvedeff was also named MAC Diving Coach of the Year in 2001 after Kathleen Christian and Susan Over had excellent showings at the MAC Championships. Over won the three-meter springboard at the MAC Meet and was the first MAC Champion in program history. Over also won the 10-meter platform exhibition, while Christian placed third in both the one-meter and three-meter competitions. Medvedeff came to Akron after spending the previous eight years as the head coach of the Akron Rippers swim club - a team he also founded. Still very involved on the junior and senior national scene, Chris remains active as the head coach of the Rippers. The Rippers are a consistent player at the junior national level and have featured a junior world team member, two national champions and numerous national finalists. Medvedeff was the diving coach at Copley High School from 1989-94,

Kristy Castillo Assistant Coach Ninth Season Akron, 2003

• Finished collegiate career at Akron with five school records

Kristy Castillo is in her ninth season as an assistant coach on the swimming and diving staff at her alma mater. Castillo has been in the position since she graduated from The University of Akron in 2003. The North Canton, Ohio native, who attended Glen Oak High School, was promoted to full-time assistant on June 1, 2003. She assists head coach Nittaya Klim in all aspects of the program, including individual instruction in each event, recruiting, and team travel. Castillo is no stranger to the pool or UA, as she was a four-year letterwinner for the Zips from 1999-2002. Castillo captained her junior and senior squads and set five school records, including the 100-yard freestyle. She still owns some of the programs top times in several events including the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard medley relay, 200-yard freestyle relay, and 400-yard freestyle relay. After completing her eligibility in 2002, Castillo served as a student assistant coach and has spent the past five summers as a member of Skip Kenney and Lea Maurer’s coaching staff at the International Swim Camp held at Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. Castillo earned her B.S. in physical education, with an emphasis in sport management in May 2003, and was as competitive in the classroom as she was in the pool, earning honors on the Dean’s List six times during her academic career. She completed her master’s in sports science and coaching in August of 2006 and began teaching part-time in UA’s sports science and wellness department.
