What is a Zip? One of the unique nicknames in all of intercollegiate athletics belongs to The University of Akron. Originally Zippers, athletic director Kenneth “Red” Cochrane officially shortened the nickname to the Zips in 1950. Twenty-five years earlier a campus-wide contest had been conducted to choose a nickname for The University’s athletics teams. Suggestions submitted by students, faculty, and alumni included Golden Blue Devils, Tip Toppers, Rubbernecks, Hillbillies, Kangaroos and Cheveliers. The winner, freshman Margaret Hamlin, received a prize of $10 for Zippers, a $6 pair of rubber overshoes and a brand name of the BF Goodrich Company. The evolution of Zippy, UA’s mascot, began 40 years ago when the student council decided the University needed a mascot. “Zippy” the kangaroo was officially declared the school’s mascot on May 1, 1953. In 2007, Zippy was named the Capital One National Mascot of the Year.

HEAD COACH VERNON CROFT
AKRON
WOME N’S S OCC ER Head Coach Second Season Lynchburg, 1994
Vernon Croft will enter his second season as the Head Coach for Akron women’s soccer in 2013. Croft, who was hired as one of the program’s assistant coaches and served as Interim Head Coach in 2012, has 10 seasons of collegiate head coaching experience. In 2012, Croft led the Zips to a 6-11-1 overall record and 2-8-1 in the MAC as Interim Head Coach for the squad. Akron women’s soccer had one Academic All-MAC recipient and five All-MAC honorees, two players on the second team and three receiving honorable mentions. The 2012 squad also tied the single season record for most points in a season (69) and set the program mark for most assists (23) in a season. Croft came to Northeast Ohio after spending two seasons as an assistant women’s coach at Miami (Fla.), where he was in charge of the goalkeepers and attacking players and acted as the recruiting coordinator. Eight of the Hurricane’s 11 starters in 2011 were a part of the two recruiting classes coordinated by Croft. Prior to his stint at Miami, Croft spent nine seasons as the head coach at Indiana State after starting the women’s soccer program in 1999. He is the Sycamores all-time winningest coach, and led ISU to the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Championship Game in 2008. Croft was also named the MVC Coach of the Year in 2004. Croft coached 15 all-conference performers, one MVC Freshman of the Year and eight MVC All-Tournament honorees while in Terre Haute. His teams were honored nine-consecutive times with NSCAA Team Academic Awards, including a No. 1 team academic ranking in 2004. The 2008 season saw the Sycamores reach the Missouri Valley Conference finals, the deepest postseason run in program history. Croft’s squad also won the Athletic Director’s Cup with the highest team GPA (3.62) and the team received the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the eighth straight season. The 2007 team finished the season on a high note, notching a 2-0 win over Missouri State on Senior Day, the first and only conference victory of the season. While the Sycamores failed to qualify for the MVC tournament for the first time in four years, Croft produced four All-Conference performers, two that were lost to graduation. 2006 was a year of continued growth for the Sycamores. Led by the play of Lauren Podolski who was the lone current Valley athlete to be named to the MVC’s All-Centennial Team, the Sycamores put together a six-match winning streak en route to finishing sixth in the league. In addition, Podolski also earned first team All-MVC and Academic All-MVC plaudits. The Sycamores notched conference victories over Northern Iowa and Missouri State. In 2005, Indiana State’s season was headlined by a 2-1 win over nationallyranked Illinois, the first win for ISU over a Big Ten program. The Sycamores also advanced to the Missouri Valley Conference tournament for the second year in a row. Following the end of the season, ISU pulled in the most conference accolades in the history of ISU soccer with five players named AllConference. Success on the field is only part of the program that Croft has built as the academic success is just as impressive. The Sycamores earned the number one academic ranking among all NCAA Division I soccer programs during the 2003-04 school year, according to the NSCAA, as their 3.54 team GPA led the nation. It was the fourth straight year the ISU program was recognized by the NSCAA for its academic performance and the fourth straight year the Sycamores were the highest ranked school in the MVC.
Croft earned 2004 MVC Co-Coach of the Year honors after the Sycamores posted their best season to date in school history and advanced to the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament semifinals. ISU also set records with nine wins overall and four victories in league play. Along with three players being named All-Conference, Lauren Podolski picked up ISU’s first ever MVC Freshman of the Year honor. Three Sycamores earned All-Conference honors in 2003 with Croft at the helm. It marked the second consecutive season in which at least one Sycamore was named first team All-Conference. ISU earned two MVC Player of the Week awards, while Natalie Contosta was named to the

MVC All-Academic Team. The Sycamores continued their strong defensive play, a hallmark under Croft, as they limited their opponents to a then school-best 29 goals on the season. In 2002, Croft directed the Sycamores to a then school record seven wins, landed three players on the All-MVC team, and a pair of freshmen on the All-Freshmen squad. Croft made adjustments to the schedule as Indiana State faced its toughest lineup in the history of the program, including three teams that advanced to the NCAA tournament. In 2001, the Sycamores doubled its win total from 2000. As a result, ISU was the lone Missouri Valley Conference school recognized nationally for its improvement. The Sycamore defense recorded the first three shutouts in school history. Offensively they tallied 13 more goals on 85 more shot attempts in comparison to 2000. The improvements on the field translated into four Sycamores being named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference team. In 2000, the first year of the program, Croft and the Sycamores were ranked No. 5 among first-year programs, according to Soccer Buzz. Croft also landed a pair of players on the Soccer Buzz First-Year Programs All-National Team. In addition, the Sycamores earned a berth in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. Croft, who was named head coach on December 15, 1999, came to Indiana State with solid experience in building programs from the ground level. Previously, he served at Missouri State, where he assisted in launching the Lady Bears soccer program. In his four seasons with MSU, the Lady Bears made appearances in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament and advanced to the semifinals every year including the championship game in 1999. While at the Springfield, Mo., institution, Croft also served as the men’s goalkeeper coach from 1996-97 which finished its season ranked No. 12 in the nation. Prior to MSU, Croft served as an assistant coach at NCAA Division III Widener University in Chester, Pa., helping begin the women’s soccer program from 1995-96. He helped guide the Pioneers to a secondplace finish in the Middle Atlantic Conference with a 15-2-1 record and a berth in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament and a No. 4 regional ranking. Croft began his college coaching career at Lynchburg College in 1994 as the graduate assistant men’s soccer coach. Croft played collegiate soccer at Rider University for one year before a four-year stint at Lynchburg College where he was a two-year captain and goalkeeper and set the school record for most saves in a career. He earned his bachelor’s degree in health, movement science and recreation in 1994 from Lynchburg and his master’s in education from Widener in 1996. The Fairfax, Va. native played two seasons as goalkeeper in the United Systems Independent Soccer League, competing for the Roanoke (Va.) Riverdawgs in 1994 and the Reading (Pa.) Rage in 1995. Croft currently holds licenses from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and has his United States Soccer Federation A License.

Andy Hoggarth Assistant Coach First Season Shenandoah, 2010
Andy Hoggarth is set to begin his first season as an assistant coach of the University of Akron women’s soccer team. Hoggarth comes to the Zips after serving six years as head soccer coach at Thiel College from 2007-12. Hoggarth was instrumental in the recruitment and retention of student-athletes, which resulted in increased roster size, GPA, and winning percentage for both the men’s and women’s soccer programs. Along with head coaching duties, Hoggarth sat as co-chair to the Physical Education department at Thiel College. One of his main duties was to be the chair of the coaching minor within the P.E. department. Prior to Thiel College, Hoggarth was an associate head coach at Shenandoah University, where he also earned his Master’s in Education. Goalkeeper development and coaching was a main aspect to the position as well. Hoggarth had also worked with Middlebrough Football Club from 2003-05 as a Health Promoter and Goalkeeper Development Officer. One of his main responsibilities in that position was to communicate the healthy lifestyle offered by soccer, and to develop and implement goalkeeper academy programs. THE PNC WAGON WHEEL CHALLENGE
AKRON ZIPS
On Aug. 24, 2011, the athletics departments at The University of Akron and Kent State University today announced participation in a new competition called “The PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge,” which further expands an intercollegiate athletics rivalry dating back more than a halfcentury between the two schools.
Fans can learn more about the rivalry and follow the results and standings via www.PNCWagonWheelChallenge.com. “PNC’s new athletic challenge will spark more excitement in a broad range of sports between these rival schools,” said Kevin O. Thompson, PNC regional president for Akron, Canton and Wooster. “By showcasing the talents of student-athletes, we will further engage alumni and the community to support our schools.” In keeping with tradition, the annual winner of the football contest will gain possession of the historic wooden Wagon Wheel trophy, while the school that accumulates the most total points in all varsity matchups for that academic year will receive an overall series trophy. “The Akron-Kent State rivalry is a regional event and this partnership will help expand it to more sports and likewise more fans,” Akron directorof athletics Tom Wistrcill said. “We’re excited to have PNC serve as sponsor of what is one of the more unique rivalries in college athletics. As members of the Mid-American Conference, the results of our competitions against one another are already very important, but the Wagon Wheel Challenge will increase the level of bragging rights around the community.” According to legend, the “Wagon Wheel” trophy traces its beginnings to the spring of 1870 when Akron industrialist John R. Buchtel set out for the town of Kent in search of a site to establish a college. In the muddy Ohio fields, however, his wagon became bogged down in the area where Kent State University is currently located. When horses pulled the wagon, a wheel came loose and became buried until it was discovered in 1902 during the construction of a pipeline along the Western Reserve Trail. The wheel eventually fell into the possession of Dr. Raymond Manchester, who as the Kent State Dean of Men in 1945, suggested the local historicartifact be offered as the trophy to the winner of the annual AkronKent State football game. “College athletics is built on strong rivalries, and we’re fortunate to have one of the closest in the country with Akron,” Kent State director of athletics Joel Nielsen said. “We’re very appreciative of PNC’s support of the Wagon Wheel Challenge – this model has worked very well with other schools and it can only help grow this rivalry and make it even stronger.” IMG College, the sponsorship and multi-media rights holder for both Akron and Kent State athletics negotiated the PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge. PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge - Rules and Qualifying Sports • Each of the fifteen (15) sports will be worth one (1) point. For a school to be the winner of The PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge, it must accumulate at least eight (8) points. • The point is awarded to the team that wins the season series in the head-to-head competition. • If the teams play head-to-head once in a given season (e.g. football), then the school that wins will receive the point. • All regular season games count toward the season series tally (including if non-conference games are played) with the school that wins more games (e.g., winning two of three in softball) receiving the point. If teams split the regular season matchups (e.g., in basketball), then each team receives a one-half (½) point for that sport. • For men’s and women’s cross country, golf and indoor/outdoor track and field, one point is awarded to whichever school finishes higher in the MAC Championship for each of those sports. (For these sports, no other competitions – in-season or post-season – will count toward the series). • MAC and/or NCAA Tournament games can count toward determining the season series winner (e.g., the schools split the two regular season meetings in basketball and then plays in the MAC Tournament, whichever school wins that game is awarded the point). • In the event of a 15-sports season tie, the school that won the trophy the previous year will retain possession. (If there is a tie in the first year, then the schools will share the trophy). 2012-13 Results Kent State won the Wagon Wheel trophy for a second-consecutive season, posting an 8.0-7.0 victory. KSU earned points in baseball (1.0), football (1.0), men’s golf (1.0), women’s golf (1.0), women’s soccer (1.0), softball (1.0), women’s indoor track & field (1.0) and women’s outdoor track & field (1.0). Akron scored points in men’s basketball (1.0), women’s basketball (1.0), men’s cross country (1.0), women’s cross country (1.0), men’s indoor track & field (1.0), men’s outdoor track & field (1.0) and volleyball (1.0).
