Les Nouvelles de Sportsaga - The News of Sportsaga

Sportsaga 2010 started with the inauguration on the 11th of March, a box-cricket match between faculty and students, and a Hoop the Loop exhibition match between VJTI and ICT (where VJTI won hands down). It continued with the same enthusiasm as all the previous Sagas, creating a very dynamic atmosphere in the college. The overwhelming volunteering and exceptional participation showed how valued sports are in this institute of technology! With around 150 volunteers and coordinators, the event was indeed a huge success. Events encompassing all forms of sport were held in college and outside and were well run and well attended. Saga reached newer heights to include more sports by introducing snooker and athletics this year. The faculty alumni meet being a good time to get the alumni back to their UD days, Saga is also popularizing among the older folks of the institute. Football and Futsal being the usual crowd pullers, this time volleyball and Hoop the Loop saw splendid attention too. Not to forget the indoors of badminton and table tennis, carom and chess! This bullletin will give you the winners and losers, and some special moments of the gigantic success that was Events at Sportsaga ‘09 Sportsaga 2010.

Faculty and Alumni : Reliving the old days

The faculty alumni sports meet was one big part of Sportsaga 2010, with us being able to connect with alumni even from the 1960s. The sports meet started with table tennis, with all the players still in form with very good shots at hand. Then came carrom which took them back to their youth, putting through excellent cuts and doubles. Some even had accuracy that we only see in our college teams!! The box cricket, which got converted to overarm criket on popular demand, and was extremely enjoyable with the mud and sweat giving healthy company. The alumni won this match hands down. The tug of war in the end was the most fun, with faculty on one side and the alumni on the other. Inspite of Thorat sir almost hitting the ground in an attempt to win, a little tugging and pulling made the alumni winners .

Mesmerising skills, breath-taking runs, pile-drivers, pinpoint crosses and acrobatic headers-football at SAGA 2010 had lots more to offer with 32 of the best teams from the state giving it all the got to reach the summit. The event kicked off on 12th March with Rizvi College of Engg. & Vartak College of Engg. playing the first match of the tournament. Rizvi won the first match. Like every big tournament SAGA 2010 had its own share of upsets to offer with Xaviers and Saboo Siddique, both known to have extremely competent teams, seeing first round exits to Thakur & VIT respectively. ICT, last years finalists had a lot to live upto and they did just that by winning the first 2 rounds and sending the crowd to new levels of excitement. ICT was pitted against PIIT (Pillai's) in the quarters in what turned out to be a very interesting game of football. ICT dominated the match but failed to find the back of the net and ICT's fate in SAGA 2010 boiled on to penalties. ICT lost the match and there ended their dream run this year. The semi-finals between DBIT & PIIT and TSEC & SFIT were a sight to see under lights and attracted huge crowd. The match between TSEC, last years winners, and SFIT, was easily the best match of the tournament-both teams displayed vintage style football and made the crowd scream awe a number of times. TSEC finally got through on penalties to reach the SAGA finals for the 2nd consecutive year. After 6 long days, it was time for the much awaited finals. DBIT & TSEC played their hats out in an evenly contested match that saw great team-work and amazing skills. The match narrowed down to penalties, the full-time score reading 0-0. DBIT kept their nerves in the penalties, thereby claiming the prestigious title of SAGA 2010 champions. The level of footy at SAGA 2010 was exhilarating and without doubt, unmatched by its predecessors and has definitely raised the barrier for the years to come. 2

Volleyball The event kicked off on 12th of March with a match between Father Agnels, Bandra and ICT. For next seven days exhibited very good matches between colleges, but it was our own college team I.C.T. that really came up with confidence and gave some great performances to make the event unforgettable. After the first two rounds, the semi finals saw clashes between four strong teams. In the first

semi final between VJTI and Pillai’s college (both very strong teams), it was really difficult to decide the better side but eventually VJTI showed a patient game to grab the match which went till the third set. The other semi final saw I.C.T. taking D J Sanghvi college. Having thrashed Father Agnels and SIWS in first two rounds, ICT team were obviously on a roll on the home ground. Now facing a very good side, ICT again showed nice work on the court to defeat D J Sanghvi college and reach the finals. In the final match two best teams, VJTI and ICT, met head on to assure the crowd a great match. The final also went upto the third and decider set which was won by ICT to win the tournament. Thane Volleyball Association referee Adwait Joshi did a great job especially in high pressure matches. Exceptionally excellent sportsman spirit was seen in each and every match which made the tournament memorable. In the whole event all of us saw some great individual performances, but ICT lead smashers Abhijeet Shirke and Sahadev literally outplayed all and we must say they were the best players of the tournament.

The CHESS Tournament of SPORTSAGA 2K10 was truly a clash of the Titans. 68 players from 20 different colleges fought on the 8x8 Battlefield to rule out their opponents. Whoever said Chess was not a sport? Well, here is a slam for you. Participation of Rated players was the best attraction. The tournament was played in the SWISS LEAUGE format. Sachin Kamat of Fr. Agnels, Vashi won the tournament while Pratik Vaidya of Jondhale College of Engg. was just a step behind. Mehul Barde of ICT was placed third. The mind game CHESS saw many girls participating and giving a tough fight. Forum Desai of Terna Dental College won among the girls, while Anuradha Jangham of ICT came up second. The informal 'ANTICHESS' event was equally thrilling and resulted in a worthy fight among the champs. Last year’s champion Utkarsh Gupta of LT Vashi emerged victorious again. Our own Mehul Barde secured the second place, and Sachin Kamat ( the winner of the formal chess format secured the third position. 3 Les Nouvelles de Sportsaga

This one is ICT’s baby. In this festival of bats, and cue sticks and carrom boards and racquets, nothing compares to the thrill of one football being kicked about with passion and grace by 12 skillful players. And this year Futsal did not disappoint. The only thing disappointing was ICT’s

Winning isn’t important..Playing with style is! bounds. Sportsaga does its bit for the deprived and hence we had an NGO tournament this time around which was a super hit too. All in all it was one tournament to remember and the winners totally deserved the trophy.

performance with both their teams crashing out in the quarter finals, but they themselves are to blame for their lackluster performances. Blaring crazy music accompanied by loud cheering footie fanatics, Futsal as always was one of the most successful event of Sportsaga with goals galore. Don Bosco Institute of Technology with their smooth dribbling and simple football absolutely annihilated the opposition defense and scored their way to be crowned the Futsal champions of 2010. The final as expected was a nail biting clash with St. Francis Institute of Technology who gave it their absolute best only to unfortunately lose in penalties. The futsal tournament also hosted a girl’s event. We had four teams which included Father Agnels (Vashi), TSEC, ICT and DBIT. We played a league between the girls which was dominated throughout by the Father Agnels. The participation was less but the enthusiasm among those who participated had no

tries in girls, the event was scaled to twice as compared as compared to last year. Playing basketball under-lights with music in the background and a huge crowd witnessing the match is something what basketball players always miss. But it wasn’t that way at Hoop the Loop this year. Right from the exhibition match in the opening ceremony till the finals of the tournament we saw a healthy crowd for all the matches, which is something I have never seen before in ICT for basketball matches. The pace of the matches, the display of skills, swift moves and the nailbiting finishes kept one involved right till the end. Fr. Agnels Vashi and Atomic Energy was the winners in boys and girls categories respectively with equally compelling runners up. The event truly lived up to its catch-line. “No time like khacchhh time!!!!! “

Hoop the Loop was one of the most happening events at Sportsaga this year. The concept of 3 on 3 was very attractive for the teams and also the referees. Unlike the other events, the entries for this event were open for all college students (non-engineering too). The participation was huge this time, the numbers speak for themselves. With 24 teams in boys and 12 en-

Badminton in Sportsaga this year started with a bang, hosted by ICT at the Indian gymkhana. We were all anxiously waiting to see who would be the quickest in the world’s fastest racquet sport. The tournament started with SPIT playing their first against Shah and Anchor, they thrashed the opposing team and emerged out as clear winners. Our home team also showed some superb skills and gradually moved up the pool. ICT B went down fighting against last year’s runner up Watumull. The best episode of the entire event was the semis, loaded with zeal and energy. The players utilized their force, skills and efforts to the fullest to reach the finals. ICT A went ahead by defeating last year’s champions TSEC in a nail biting match, only to go ahead to face SPIT. This is the first time that ICT went up to the

finals in badminton in the history of Sportsaga! Kudos to the team! The final encounter between ICT and SPIT was the most awaited event in whole Saga. The home team fought hard and although they lost the match, it was a perfect finish which disappointed no one. It was truly a “Champions Trophy” that SPIT won, because the best teams in Mumbai, though few, participated in Sportsaga 2010.

Throwball “No twists, No Butterfingers. Show us your strong throws and that’s how the game goes…”and that is exactly how the game went. An all girls event, this one was definitely worth a watch. With the smashes and swings, the game wasn’t as easy to play as it looked. Over 14 teams from all over Mumbai participated in this game, which started with knock outs. The ICT team could not make it to the end this time, losing to Watumull in Quarter Finals. The SPIT girls team surprisingly won semifinals by defeating a very strong D. J. Sanghvi team. D. J. Sanghvi did give a tough fight to their opponent and the match was quite close. TSEC being the strongest team around had a convincingly smooth way to the finals. The finals between TSEC and SPIT was a good watch, but TSEC beat SPIT with 7-0 in one of the sets.

Cricket

This game in Sportsaga’10 being a player and public favourite and because it takes a bit longer to finish, kicked off at the Matunga Gymkhana a couple of days before Sportsaga ’10 was inaugurated. On the registration desk Season Ball Cricket got a very nice response with not many teams wanting to miss it. It started smoothly, but alas, it was not too long when it witnessed a bad day with our next door neighbours VJTI backing out of the tournament. So it was a day to forget & move ahead with Saga... ICT was knocked out of the tournament in the Quarter Finals in a match which ended on the last ball!! It was a big big upset but the Season Ball Cricket went on great with the finals be played between VIT & D. J. Sanghvi on the19th, D. J. Sanghvi winning the match and the tournament. Season Ball Cricket in Sportsaga is still waiting for its home team to reach the finals. Hope it gets to the top in Saga ’11. 7

ICT Green Marathon

A marathon is 42.195 km long, officially. Running in the ICT Green Marathon though requires you to cover only 5 km distance. The Green Marathon last year was big, with 1200 people running for Aakanksha kids. In 2008, we saw 700 people running for PETA. This year we have 1200 people running a marathon organised in association with Aakanksha, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and Sunday Friends. A spirit that is seen in the Marathon is unique; some running for a cause, others for the thrill of runnig a marathon and some even walking through it. It is a run of the mill will. The Marathon this year has been graced by the presence of Mr. Mir Ranjan Negi, a field hockey player and former goalkeepr of the Indian field hockey team. The director of our institute, Prof. G.D. Yadav was also present.
