DEPARTMENT COURTYARD University Courtyard Redevelopement APPROACH
Location: New Delhi Area: 1,854.94 sqm Student Project during 3rd semester. INTRODUCTION University of New Delhi, a century old institution which stands as the architecture marvel of the colonial period. However, with the advancements in time, there has been a constant need for redevelopments of its existing spaces at various levels. This project is one such Landscape design project, dealing with the redevelopment of one of the University’s courtyard infront of Electronics dept. The main aim in this project is to enhance the existing infrastructure of the courtyard for better use by the fellow students, staffs and other visitors alike. Since the region comes in a Hot-Dry region, it was important to arrive on a sustainable design solution for the courtyard & to attain a minimalistic design reflecting the present contemporary situation. EXISTING SITUATION The courtyard which is redeveloped is the quarter part of the main courtyard which is surrounded by the University’s main building block. It had been extensively used by students & professors as it contained huge shade trees like Azadirachta indica, Delonix regia, etc & ornamental trees like Saraca asoca along the periphery. It provides access to three departments. The major part of the courtyard falls infront of the Electronics dept. along with ICT & Electrical departments. The courtyard is characterised by its large shade trees as often students come there during their breaks & spend their time outdoors for refreshment.
The project brief needed a design solution which would be creative, enhancing to the present use, sustainable & cost effective as the bugdet for the design was very tight. They also needed a design which would be an inspiration for the future redevelopments of other surrounding courtyards & open spaces in the campus. It was also important to link the design to the context of campus which would also denote futuristic developments. While arriving at the design solutions, thorough study of the coutyards were made & were then efficiently analysed to arrive at certain points that would govern the design. Firstly, as per the design brief, the site was studied for various usage by the people. It was seen that how the site is used depending on the time of any given day. With this analysis & from the results of shade study, a design solution with maximum sitting space is devised. The relation of this coutyard with other surrrounding blocks gave us the meaning about it character. Involvement of fellow students, professors & other users helped us to arrive at the aesthetical importance of the landscape. CONCEPT The sitting area concept is derieved from the traditional Chowk Sitting area prevelant in the region traditionally in rural landscapes. These are solid sitting platforms built around the huge shade trees like Banyan, Peepal, etc usually in circular or square forms. These also provide a optimal space for other rural activities like congregation, gatherings, pocessions, etc. The form of these platforms are exploded & abstracted to the forms wirh linear platform benches flexible of the sitting space.

Visualization of the courtyard from East entrance PROPOSAL To enhance the courtyard, a proper & organised sitting area is proposed with certain infrastructure developments. Originally the coutyard, gets divided into two sections due to the central road which connects to the entrance to the adjoining buildings. This directs to develop a two pockets scheme within the courtyard, bigger one serving one department & smaller one serving another.
the benches enhances the micro atmosphere. When people use the benches, it creates a sense of good feeling with the aromatic presence so that they can feel relieved from the stress due to studies & enjoy being in the university campus. This philosophy could also be used for the redevelopements of other courtyards of the campus. This as explained before adds a character to the open spaces .
The layout focuses on the context, area paved with Pink Sandstone(locally quaried) is successfully employed through which the colourful benches can be accessed. The position of these benches is such that it encourages communication among its users, leading to an open atmosphere of the campus. The arrangement of benches is so flexible, that the space can also be used for various outdoor activities like teaching, studying, exposition, small gatherings, etc. The open land around the pavements is covered with local lawn variety, so that during hot summers, the place acts as relief for comfort from heat and as well serves as a water harvesting device during the rains. This adds to the sustainability of the design through which rain water run off can be controlled. The composition of the layout provides a character to the existing courtyard & the building around. Care is taken to accomplish existing green structure of the site. This means that no trees were to be cut in the proposal but, new trees/plants will be employed in the new layout. The existing shade trees governed the present use of the site by many students as often they provided shades for their activities. Local flowering trees like Swietenia mahagoni, Cassia fistula, Royal poinciana, Jacaranda mimosifolia, Peltophorum pterocarpum, Bougainvillea, etc enhances the atmosphere during their blossom seasons, but also provide shade during other times. They also act as backdrop for outdoor festivals held in the departments annually. Shrubs like Metrosideros polymorpha, Tibouchina semidecandra, Mesua ferrea, Melaleuca flammea, Hibiscus rosa, Salvadora persica, Mimulus aurantiacus, etc around

SIEMENSBAHN An Old Subway Land Redevelopment Location: Berlin Area: 8 km stretch Studio project in 1st semester performed in group with Neha Ahmediya & Mariam Ismaelzadeh. INTRODUCTION The urban oriented landscape design focuses on the redevelopment of an old suburban railway line track & surrounding land for futuristic reuse. The project involves a scientific methodology for arriving at the design solutions. The design process started with anavlysis of the site & developing the concept to arrive at the proposal. The proposal is development of the site in an ecological link park that can be used for various activities by the neighbourhood without disturbing the existing rich ecosystem along the site. The continuous railway track acts as a base for the ecological link which contains important floras that will enhance the suitability for faunas that will come together from the surrounding green spaces like parks, forests, gardens, etc. This manner they will also thrive well in an urban setup & improve the quality of urban life. The subway line Siemensbahn was a part of the subway network of Greater Berlin & served as a public transport option until the 1980s railway strikes of Berlin. Since then, it had been left abandoned leaving an almost 8 km stretch of Urban land almost useless & secluded in the middle of the neighbourhood. Various reform intiatives for the subway line was proposed but not until recently, when the Town Council of Charlotenburg held the competition seeking for its redevelopment. In this project, an overall analysis was carried out at various levels developing on an idea leading to its Ecological transition link. CONCEPT The main concept is to enhance the ecology of the existing green space which has developed over the years by introducing suitable floras, and to utilise this space for public usage. One criteria is also to develop this space as a living museum which will create awareness among the people about the existing floras & faunas and this green space would enhance the overall nature-liveliness of the neighbourhood. Bringing the faunas from the nearby green spaces like forests, parks, gardens, etc through a biological link, which will be the continuous series of animal friendly plants along the tracks. Design is kept minimalistic with very less hardscape & more enhanced softscapes which is overall idea for the ecological link. Three scenario based typical design is developed on this principle. A three scheme design & development is proposed
8
SCHEME I In this proposal for the tracks where the land area is comparatively wider & it creates a setup like a grounded forest. The proposal is to provide a walkway which is linked along with tracks & keeps crossing regularly creating an interesting linear walk atmosphere when used. At times there are some benches at the egdes to allow the walker to have a break & experience the nature at their own pace. Trees such as already existing birch & quercus are thought to be retained as much as posible to keep it more minimal. Flowering bushes & shrubs along walkways enhance the walking experience. SCHEME II This developement occurs where there’s a built up structure like a station/platform. The already existing structure are effectively utilised as the access points to the walkways with spaces for exposition & displays, benches, etc. From here on one can easily start their Urban trail with walkways providing varied kind of atmospheric instances. This is again added to the minimal human oriented developement on the railway tracks so as to encourage animal aided design. Trees such as already existing birch & quercus are thought to be retained as much as posible to keep it more minimal. Flowering bushes & shrubs along walkways enhance the walking experience. SCHEME III This is a proposal on the part of tracks which are on brigdes & have narrow spaces. Here the walkways continue as a central line between the tracks. The tracks are used as a vegetative belt with flowering plants so as to enhance the walking experience over along the walkways. At times there are some benches at the egdes to allow the walker to have a break & experience the nature at their own pace. Trees such as already existing birch & quercus are thought to be retained as much as posible to keep it more minimal. Flowering bushes & shrubs along walkways enhance the walking experience.

Encouraging various faunas into the tracks area with the help of suitable floras as animal aided design Various Faunas which are adaptible to urban environs are encourged to migrate from surounding green areas such as Parks & Forests into the track areas as a means to enhance the ecology of the abandoned land. This is achieved with the help of animal aided designs by creating an appropriate planting design scheme & vegetation that is more friendly to such spieces. Furthermore, the minimalistic design with adequate infrastructure will allow human activities along with ecological enhancement of the site. Hence the motto of creating a living museum can be achieved successfully.
Transition of flora from Woodland to Openland
Typical design sections of lands with wider areas. The arrangement of walkways would be such that it provides access to various open spaces with seatings around.
Typical design for tracks on bridges. Narrow space directs provision of single walkway with benches placed alternatively.
Typical design for tracks along the platforms. These serves as the entry & exit points for the walkways due to its proximity & access to main roads.
Three scheme design developments along the various sections of the line.

1. The track trail begins from the Gartenfeld station situated on the terminal of the subway track. Around it are also the allotment gardens which acts as the base for the trails. As it provides builtup space, suitable for certain enclosed activities, the maintaineance becomes easy. It also provides the initial display space.
3. The platforms serve as a viewing deck to the trackline park. This space is designed with adequate sitting benches & space for various expositions regarding the flora & fauna of the context. As we encourage the faunas to get into this ecological park, it also becomes a place to visualize these creatures in their natural habitats.
2. The old station blocks will be developed as the entry/exit points which can accomodate various exposition spaces & these spaces link the park line with surrounding locality.

5. Furthermore, the trail continues along the track line as a continuous walkway along the green link design. After a certain length of travel, the part of track and the walkways come existing over the brigdes. This beautiful walkways provide panoramous views to the neighbourhood & further continues to the river island.
4. The ecological link also provides connection to the surrounding green parks such as Jungfernheide Park. Although this link only gives access to the faunas directly, but people coming into the park could also enjoy them as a result of this ecological link design. Jungfernheide
6. Ultimately the walkways end on the Spreeinsel island at the river. Here it opens up to a series of waterfront spaces icluding large decks & spaces for gatherings. At certain places the riverbanks are designed so as to accomodate the animal flow & use it to further spread across the river. SiemensbrĂźcke

YMCA Club House & Convention Centre Location: Mumbai Area: 2528 sqm Studio project in 7th semester B.Arch. INTRODUCTION Architecture project dealing in the design of a convention centre with club house & other sports facilities in the New township development of the city. This project comprises of planning & designing the centre as per client’s requirement. Coming up in the new devlopments of the city, the project was categorized as an important example showcasing new ideology of architectural design in India. The method carried out in this project was quite scientific & with a creative touch, the results were presented as the proposed design. Functionally linking the various spaces & zoning them within proper block has been the core part in this design. This has been further achieved by the aesthetics of massing to enhance the design & provide a base to the project. CONCEPT The main idelogy for this project has been derived from 3 cuboids placed axial to the site boundaries. Furthermore, these forms are then developed with a distinctions so that they denote their functional aspect from outside. The sports block pertaining to a funtion quite different from the convetion & residential blocks, is designed with a curved roof. Facing of the blocks is such that access is available to each in plenty & adequate. The use of form is related to the context where such forms are often associated with the traditional architecture of the
14
region. Furthermore, placing them axially will make it more climatic responsive & sustainable with effective site design. The way the blocks are kept will expose their surfaces to less heat & would ultimately reduce in the consumption of active cooling elements for the buildings. The massing further enhances creation of shades & shadows which will reduce the heat absorption further & partially be more energy efficient. Furthermore, the architecture governs the landscape design of the site. Spatial arrangement of the blocks creates pockets of spaces in the landscape which is suitable zoned respective to its funtional importance. The sports block gets most open space which also guides the design of its courts. Here the open space & enclosed space interactes with each other due to its functional relation. PROPOSAL The proposal showcases the efficient design of the given site. The blocks segregate the functional aspects. Here, as per the design brief, the sports area, convention area & sty area has been carefully divided as per the concept & the design was achieved by creating an interlinked spacial design with differential parental structures. The entry & exit provides the direction to the layout of the site by creating a proper flow in the traffic. Segregation of parking lots is been considered as per the requirements of various activity zones. Hence thses are also got segregated within the zonal structure as per the concept. Overall the design achieves the very contextual identity to the site creating a free flow & showcasing ‘FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION’

RADACZ COMPLEX Church & Castle complex redevelopment Location: Radacz, Poland Area: 12 ha Master thesis. INTRODUCTION A master thesis project dealing with the castle & church complex compound with an adjacent park. This project is derived from the competition organised by the Village community which seeked for the development proposal for the castle complex..
Concept is to link three major points : 1. The Church 2. The Palace 3. The Lake through the designed Park. This creates the base of the context for the design guidance. Furthermore, development of the park in a typical style is governed by the socioeconomic need of the site. Although a redevelopment project, the focus is to enhance the existing site whilst keeping the historic importance of the context in mind.
The illustrations shows the proposed development for various parts of the site in an artistic way relating to English Garden Style.
The idea is to enhance the complex by renovating the existing structures to its original glory as far as possible & developing the park in a Contemporary English Park with features that can be used for modern-day activities.
RADACZ VILLAGE
DESIGN
The village is situated near the town of Szceniek in the Western Pomeranian region of Poland. The village hosts a great history about a German noble family called Kleists. A church built in 18th cent. & an adjoining palace in ruins elaborates the history of the place in a physical way.
The designs proposed improvements in infrastructure around the castle & church & creation of beach at the lake shores are prepared. One major design factor was to provide proper access to the castle which is totally unapproachable at present. The creation of access roads according to the old footprints of the castle site are devised. Two access roads, one adjacent to the church boundary & another grand entry from the front of the castle are proposed. The area around the castle is developed as open space. It will be designed such that it can be used flexibly for various activities according to requirements like parking, congreagtion, etc. The surrounding garden around the castle is developed as the Contemporary English garden with network of walkways running all over the land & creating small folies which can be used flexibly for various activities as per requirements. These network of walkways ultimately lead to the beach which is designed on the adjacent lake shore. It will house decks & platforms, again quite flexible in its usage as per requirements.
Located in the north western region of Poland & at a quite proximity to Berlin & with this idea, it will enhance the prosperity of the site for better social & economic purposes of the village & surroundings CONCEPT The history along with its surrounding landscape sets the backdrop for the landscape design concept. Respecting the Florence chapter of EU convention, the landscape design focuses on depicting & preserving the history in a contemporary way.
