Project - The ‘Neighbourhood’ School Semester - 10th (Architecture design thesis) Softwares used - Revit, Autocad, Photoshop
Due to the rising commercial aspect, schools, are becoming grander in terms of garnering the image of being the best one in its field. In order to sustain in the this competition, schools tend to market themselves through various lucrative offers , thereby rendering the students as mere consumers of a product. Over the years, School marketing, in India, has become a booming industry, and is set to grow even further as the focus of schools is on building sustainable brands. Also, in this scenario, misleading architectural imagery plays a significant role where it becomes the platform to attract the consumers. Due to this rat race, quality of education suffers the most as the schools are evolving with providing various infrastructural facilities, but the quality of space required for learning has remained constant or is left unexplored. The thesis studies the existing schooling scenario and after drawing conclusions from the above study, the thesis tries to answer the needs of the city through a design project.

Site chosen & Justification: The site is part of an existing school complex, located in a humble neighbourhood of Chinchpokli. The school is surrounded by diverse programs i.e. residential, commercial, industrial, etc. The aim was to design an institution which promotes education with an holistic approach of learning which focuses on – finding child’s true identity. Such a project requires a strong neighbourhood where cross exchange of knowledge takes place between the students and the community, thus educating both of them. The existing school is up for redevelopment and a tower is planned. Hence, the designed project will serve as a proposal to the redevelopment project and also, to the city as an example of a school with a new approach of learning which takes cues from its own people to facilitate education in a dense neighbourhood.

Design Scheme: The main aim of the project was to design a knowledge hub, thereby enhancing the learning process, emotionally as well as physically. The program to be derived should be based on the holistic learning of the students i.e. not binding within the four walls of the school. Hence, Special programs like a community centre is included which would encourage cross exchange of knowledge within the students and the parents as well as the society (neighbourhood). A series of pause points guides the visitior where the RG becomes the revelation in this circulation. Also, due to the cross exhange, the school actually becomes an indirect connection between the neighbourhood and the recreational ground. 12

Project - The Museum of ‘Interplay’ Semester - 5th Softwares used - Hand drawn+Autocad, Photoshop
The Idea for this project was based on the true meaning of Interplay – ‘An activity which is fully absorbing, includes elements of uncertainty and which exits outside primary life. Play’s purpose is to generate more possibilities for play’. Hence, design evolved is extensively based on the above mentioned quote as an Interplay ensues between the visitor and the space when he enters the museum. Elements such as the Wall at the entrance with niches, a linear path connecting all the galleries, the building resting on pilotis, trees and natural light as Guiding elements, each gallery signifying a particular game, etc. have been used to recreate the above mentioned experience.

Site location and Context: The site is located in the Northern suburbs of Mumbai known as Kandivali. The site is at approximately 5mins from the W.E. highway and sits in NSAI (National Sports Authority of India). It has the TOI office on its rear side and slums on its front.

Project - The Mumbai Pavillion Semester - 7th Softwares used - Autocad, Sketchup, Vray & Photoshop
The intent of the Project was to design a Pavillion which talks about the city of Mumbai, , its history, culture, etc. The brainstorming for ideas in this project commenced with first understanding the city and the relationship the city shares with its people. Looking at this relationship on an individual level as well as on a city level, the relationship seemed AMBIGUOUS, because of its various layers and nuances and being diverse for each individual. Hence, in order to portray this thought, elements such as large Reflective Wall at the entrance – to get backdrop of the city, play of voids and reflective surfaces on the façade, etc. have been used. The programs include temporary exhibition gallery on the deck while permanent exhibition gallery inside the enclosed space of the pavilion.

Site location and Context: The site is located at the southernmost tip of Mumbai, i.e. the Nariman point which is visited by locals as well as tourists frequently throughout the year. It is a 50m X 5m jetty at the end of Marine drive, also called as the Queen’s necklace.

Inside - Outside: The unfolded section here shows the inside and outside elevation of the permanent exhibition space together. Through its round about circulation along the external facade and playful arrangement of the visual elements i.e. opaque, transparent and reflective panels on the walls (inside and outside both), a sense of obscurity generates amongst the visitors (inside as well as outside). 24

Project - Pitch for an Architecture design of an Admin building Area - 12500 sq. ft Status - On going Role - Presentation for pitch, Design development, Consultant co-ordination & W.D.
The studio pitched for an architectural design of an Admin building for a Paints manufacturing company, located in a large industrial plant premises. I worked on its conceptualisation and the presentation proposal which included four options - ‘Slopes’, ‘Valley’, ‘Mountain’ & ‘Boulders’ (Shown below), out of which, the client liked ‘Slopes’ and ‘Boulders’ and asked us to merge the same. Post the pitch, I worked on its design developement and produced few iterations. After a few back and forth with client, the scheme was finalised with all formal programs like, cabins , meeting rooms, etc. arranged along the periphery and which are connected by a continous Ramp/corridor. Midlandings are strategically arranged, thus serving accesses to the peripheral blocks and to workstation trays which are arranged on the inside of the ramp i.e. along the courtyard. Based on program, the blocks were differentiated through a primary colour scheme. The design was later fine tuned and construction documents were produced for the same by me.

Project - Competition proposal for Design of an Innovation hub (IISC, Banglore) Area - 1,50,000 Sq.ft Project status - 2nd runner up Role - Co-Leader (Overlooked entire design process with production)
The Studio participated in an invited competition for an Architecture design of Innovation hub, for new emerging startup companies, located in IISC campus, Banglore. The existing site was covered with lush green trees which co-incidentally became the spring point for the entire project. After subtracting the space required for foliage of trees, the leftover space became the floorplate on which programs were arranged accordingly. I, along with my colleague handled the entire design process along with overlooking the team responsible for production work for the presentation.

Project - Interior Design of a Media office Area - 90,000 sq. ft Project status - Ongoing execution Role - Design development & Production of WD
VIP lounge design: The ground floor also includedVIP lounge which was situated next to a preview theatre where screening of movies would happen. The layout and ambience was supposed to be premium as the lounge would be occupied by famous celebrities attending the screening. Considering this as the intent, I tried working out different layout options where lounge stands for more than just being a gathering space.

Project - Interior design of a Clinic Area - 500 Sq.ft Status - Completed Role - Production of WD & Execution
The Clinic is situated in an commercial establishment whose floor area of the clinic measures up to 550 sq.ft. It is run by an Ophthalmologist and a pediatrician. It includes cabins for them along with a cabin for an optometrist, reception area, waiting area and toilets. I took over the project when it had passed the design stage and was geared up for construction. Hence, finalization of BOQs, producing construction documents, weekly paying visits to site, followed by conducting meetings with civil contractor, electrician, carpenter and client were a part of this entire executional process. The primary finishing material was laminate as client were fussy about cleanliness. For finishing of the edges, stainless steels strips on the partition edge and aluminum skirting were used. The entire space is covered by false ceiling in order to hide the services lines. Site Photos during execution:

Project - Architecture Design of a Temple Area - 650 sq. ft Status - Unbuilt Role - Conceptual design & presentation drawings
On the outskirts of Mumbai, DCOOP designed and completed a staff housing project for workers of a steel manufacturing company. The project sits in an industrial context and was designed in such a way that it did not disturb the existing Hindu temple (in the central court). But after its execution, the temple is planned to be shifted to a new location. Hence, I got an opportunity to work on its design. The proposed temple is supposed to be of the same size as the original one (5m X 5m). The scheme was later refined and then, sent to client for approval.

The proposed design scheme abstracts the spatial quality of a typical Hindu temple and yet locate the same in a changing industrial context. The abstraction tries to evoke a spiritual experience amongst the devotees, using industrial aesthetics. Also, use of pure geometric forms such as square and circle bring a restful quality to the structure.

Project - Architecture Design of a School complex (Innovation centre) Area - 2000 sq. ft Status - To be executed in phase-2 Role - Formal explorations and design development
As part of the residential school complex, an innovation centre was proposed to host events and public activities. I started with formal explorations of that block whose conceptual design had already been done (shown below). Considering climatic factors, the program and the users, I explored few possible design iterations through physical model keeping in mind the scale and its immediate context.
