Abstract The purpose of this research was to analyze the character personalities from the novel "Colorful" according to Karen Horney's psychoanalytic theory, which consists of basic anxiety, needs, selfidentity. The research was conducted using a qualitative research methodology and data was analyzed using descriptive analysis. The research found that the character personality of Makoto, is severe anxiety that has been accumulated for a long time. This is as a result of external factors such as family and internal factors including introverted and timid. Makoto's anxiety personality is evident in 3 ways: trying to meet people for acceptance, retreating from people when he feels disappointed and encountering people when his needs are do not meet his expectations. There are two types of encounters: committing suicide and clashing with others to release pressure in the mind. These things affec personality by committing suicide in order to end the problem and in value in himself as he is clash with other people to clear problems and be able to live happily with others
