SOUND, NOISE & ACOUSTICS

Disturbing noise in work environments is common.

The challenges in a room with bad acoustics are the

deriving from this type of interior, tend to lead to difficulties concentrating, stress, tiredness and poor acoustic comfort, decreasing the well-being and efficiency of the work force.

INCREASED DEMANDS FOR NOISE REGULATIONS Room acoustics and building regulations have received increased attention from organisations, scientists and governments in recent years. As knowledge and research are growing, the demands for better sound environments and indoor acoustics increases accordingly. Organisations worldwide have realised the consequences of bad acoustics, and are increasing their focus on noise pollution in the office space and public institutions. In 2014, the International Congress on Sound and Vibration acknowledged the urgent need for international research and focus on acoustics and sound environments. This indicates the importance of scientific research and legislative action, in order to reduce the health risks associated with poor acoustics and improve the wellbeing and work life quality of employees worldwide. The Scandinavian countries have been frontrunners in the field. Governmental regulations for acoustics in office spaces and children’s institutions have been significantly tightened leading to a growing demand for acoustically improved sound environments with shorter reverberation time.

08

THE EFFECT OF WALL ABSORBERS A minimum of 10-15% of the rooms total sound absorption should be mounted on walls or other vertical surfaces. Regular pictures does not have any mentionable sound absorbing qualities and pictures in glass frames reflect sounds even more than bare walls.

OPEN PLAN OFFICES:

CREATING COMFORTABLE ACOUSTIC ZONES

Office layout and design has, over the last years, seen a growing emphasis on openness, transparency and flexibility in architecture. While many facets of the work life prosper in this type of open offices, the sound environment suffers, having an enormous influence on employee productivity. Therefore it is essential to consider the room acoustics and sound environment when designing your office plan. Intelligent acoustic space planning promotes satisfaction and efficiency, and makes it possible to utilise the full capacity of the room, creating extra and efficient work stations. Studies have shown up to 52% increased performance as a result of improved acoustics in office spaces. Realising your office needs makes it possible to plan the interior design and create different acoustically screened zones according to the given work functions. This contributes to an acoustically comfortable ambience, creating a distractionfree environment that facilitates varied activities; concentrateted working, communication and cooperation.

and sparing sessions requires high concentration and privacy. A think tank is often in close proximity to the general work area, therefore requiring acoustic screens of high efficiency

GUIDE

ACOUSTIC REGULATIONS BASED ON ROOM FUNCTIONALITY SMALL ROOMS: In smaller rooms in the office the sound environment is easily secured by installing efficient wall absorbers on minimum two perpendicular walls. If the room is used for video- and phone conferences, the absorbers need a depth of at least 40 mm, to secure the acoustic quality within the 125 – 4000 Hz frequency range. CANTEENS: Due to the large gathering of sounds and noise in a canteen, sound absorption is never overdone. In these spaces it is necessary to install as much sound absorbing material as possible, on as many surfaces as possible. Wall absorbers are of great importance in canteens, as they place the absorption closer to the sound sources. OPEN OFFICES: In open plan offices, the general sound environment and acoustics can be secured by installing an efficient acoustic ceiling and making sure that the rooms total absorption equals 1.1 times the floor space. Supplementing the general acoustic regulations, it is possible to locally optimize the acoustics and create specific acoustic zones within the office. Efficient wall absorbers, acoustic art, table screens or screen walls can be placed closer to the specific sound sources and facilitate improved workstations and employee behaviour.

12

OPTIMISING YOUR ACOUSTIC SOLUTION:

EFFICIENT COMBINATIONS OF SOUND ABSORBING PRODUCTS

A sound-absorbing ceiling is essential for good acoustics in large rooms, but to efficiently reduce horizontal sound waves and make a real impact on the rooms reverberation time, it is recommended that a minimum of 10-15% of the room’s total sound absorption is placed vertically - either on walls or as screens.

An acoustic ceiling reduces general noise and echo in the room, but without the supplement of wall absorbers or shielding it will not be sufficient in order to create good acoustics, because the ceiling initially absorbs the vertical sound energy in the room. The horizontal sound waves will still move freely and reflect on the walls.-

Wall mounted absorption is an efficient way to absorb horizontal sound waves and stop the sound reflection between parallel walls. Acoustic pictures can be installed closer to workstations and sound sources and therefore absorb sound fast and efficient.

Acoustic screens is a great help around workstations and desks that stands near each other, but can not ensure the acoustics in large rooms alone. Sounds hitting the screen will be absorbed, but sound energy can still move over or under the screens, reflecting on the ceiling and walls, which can be a great nuisance for workers who can hear noise without being able to identify the source.

In this way, the different sound absorbing products compliment each other, and by installing various types of sound absorption in several different spots in the room, the effect of the individual acoustic products increases and the acoustics can effectively be regulated and adapted to the rooms layout and features. It is further possible to supplement the acoustic solution with either open shelves, soft furnishings etc. Employee behaviour is in addition essential in creating a comfortable sound environment in the office. It is especially important that the employees are aware of each other’s activities and tolerance to disturbing noise, and behave considerate of each other’s work.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION AKUART SmartWall is a whole new breed of acoustic screen walls. The uniqueness lies in the fact that the printed canvases on both the front and back surface of the screen wall are replaceable. This paves the way for creating different visual expressions depending on which side of the wall you are looking at. AKUART SmartWall is categorized in absorption class A, the highest absorption class available. This ensures that the propagation of sound in a given space is efficiently stopped. Up to 95% of the acoustic energy hitting the wall surfaces is absorbed in the frequency range 500-4000 Hz. This screen wall is perfect for all types of organizations in which sound sources such as servers, printers, colleagues, etc. cause acoustic problems. SPECIFICATIONS: Product:
