Even when I was in the university, my works had been more than architecture: they are means to express ideas. My diverse career allows me to explore various types of design projects and work with different teams. I did artwork, architectural design, interior design, and outdoor installation design. I never limit myself and constantly explore the unknown realm.

From Object To City 2012 - 2013 Senior - Graduation Project

From senior to the graduation project, my research has been focused on cities, especially on rainy days . On a rainy day, the city will have a different rhythm than usual, as if the city’s switch has turned on. Such as the transportation even slower. And also, the pedestrians distanced themselves from each other. Moreover, the whole city has lost a layer of color. Everything seems like a huge system switching in succession. I am curious about how this works.

In Taipei, a city with approximately annual 165.5 rainy days, raining is like a switch; once it starts to rain, Taipei looks completely different. Therefore, I want to begin my discussion of the huge system, City, with a common object, the umbrella.

4

“Redefine umbrella in different ways

Umbrella is a way for people to avoid rain, when it is opened by hands, its components is put into action. After the umbrella is opened, the rain is blocked. It’s also a way to temporarily isolate themselves.

Maybe we could think of an umbrella as a smally system. So first I disassemble the umbrella, took the umbrella apart and reconstructed it, adding the motor and other parts to the umbrella and, thus, redefine it.

“Keep the action mode of opening the umbrella

5

“To build new systems from newly developed parts

At the begining, I kept the action mode of opening the umbrella, and constructed new small systems by developing various parts.

And then, I changed the movement of the object, it is no longer a linear movement (the way the umbrella opens). But kept its size as same as the umbrella. 6

After researching several structure and mode of actions. I would like to make a device based on linear motion and use the parts I developed earlier So, at first, I developed a single mechanism and try to install it on the wall. I hope that in the end, this will develop into a large device that fluctuates through time differences.

“Elevation: used CAD to simulate motions of different components combination

“Front view

The device performs action like the arms’ opening and closing , driven by the motor. The speed at which the motor worked remained the same, but the starting angle for each part of the installation was different, so wave-like dynamics was produced.

“In the end, what I want to develop: The structure is tied to an elastic cloth

8

Most of the components were made of aluminum. I made them myself and used them with screws, bearings, springs, etc. I made the structure of the device and reserved a screw hole that could be locked with flexible fabric in the future.

The previous research process is still on a small scale, so I want to expand my imagination before entering the next stage. I used software tools to help me calculate and build models I use linear motion as the main action condition and try to make a space volume that can be enlarged and contracted.

From the previous steps, the objects, a small system composed of action mechanisms and structures. And by operating a group of devices, slightly expand the operation of the system. Next, I would like to cut into a more complex system: City. I chose Taipei as my research base, a city with approximately annual 165.5 rainy days.

13

Area

First step, I carefully examined some of the various elements in the city, such as transportation, the main locations of the crowd, the length of the traffic light cycle in different areas, and the distribution of rainfall. I think these elements have an interactive relationship with each other. But I also know that a city is far more complicated than that. Trigger

“Three sets of installations were placed in three locations in the venue of Graduation Project Exhibition

After I redefined the systems of varying objects in the city and classify these systems in the same way, and, next, I want to make a device to present the interactions between the systems, which can be divided into three essential parts :Trigger, Motor, Results.

15

And then I started to work on a new system, using the method of redefining small systems and expanding the idea. The motion of the ball is the result of the system. Because the gears were arranged differently, the three installations with the same structure and motor had different swinging movements.

“I used silicone to make molds, and use Concrete, plaster, and epoxy as the material for components of my installations.

Three sets of devices were placed in three locations in the exhibition to form a larger system within this space. I think that rain is an external force in the city. Similarly, in my system, I regard time as a random variable of my installations, which affected the period of time each set of motor worked. Like the rain that is not controlled by the city, the random number of seconds cannot be controlled by the system of installation and changes the appearance of the system. “Result: The ball is rotated by the gear to draw a range of different sizes.

I wanted to fight gravity, like what Michael Jackson did. In his “Moonwalk”, Michael Jackson’s body leaned forward as close to the ground as possible, but it never touched the ground. So, I made an equipment whose principle was very simple. When I lean, it will fall backwards in the opposite direction, like another me, holding and balancing me.

“Exploded Axonometric Detail

I used wood to make the main structure and steel to make the part that required structural strength. The finished equipment can stand on its own with its three feet. And when I use it, it will change as I lean forward, and my foot will step on its bottom. It will only stand on the ground with two of its feet. I imagined the force balancing myself and my equipment as that between the moon and the Earth.

I spent a lot of time researching how to design this playground because I wanted to design a playground that best fits the community. By research included shape, color, safety issues, the ways kids play, and local history age structure. Other than this, I transformed the park into a vehicle that conveys the community’s cultural history to the public and a park that will stay in the memory of local children. This design project became a successful model for playground renewal in Taipei.

Cooperating with Gonverge Design

In 2015, I worked with Gonverge Design, to help this business consulting company plan a bookstore in Xi’an, China. I joined the project at the beginning and spent 10 months developing from scratch. I started designing with my previous experience in interior design studio. In the process, I also recruited a design team and built up a design department for Gonverge Design.

Central Hall Stair

“2F Plan

We faced several challenges. For one thing, the building has an area of 18,000 ㎡. In addition, the time for this project was short. We tried to think outside the box. For example, we wrote a Chinese poem and made it into a luminaire on the top of the stairs in the central hall. We built a steel bridge in the empty central hall where people can walk to different floors.

In the plane arrangement, not only bookcases, the most important thing in the bookstore, we also designed various spaces in the bookstore, such as coffee shops, tea shops, lecture halls, etc.

Finally, the bookstore opened successfully in Oct. 2015 and became the first large bookstore in Xi’an, which is different from the public’s imagination of bookstores. Its success has made the city government list culture development as a key project for urban development.

In 2014, I co-created the artwork “Foresee with the artist Niu Jun-Qiang, an artist known for his photographic and graphic artwork. In order to present his concept more accurately, Niu invited me to work with him on an installation, which depicted the state that changed with time. We used copper as the main material for production.

The main body of the artwork “Foresee” is a scale, and each side of it is respectively a candle and a mirror. The size of the candle will be based on how long this work is going to be exhibited. During this time, the mirror will descend slowly with the candle burning and losing weight. In the end of exhibition, the scale will balance, and mirror will reflect the candle which is burnt down. “Detail of Foresee I
