Hanano Barracks under fire

Battles in Damascus countryside

SC concerned about civilians in Homs
Members of the UN Security Council expressed their “deep concern” about the fate of civilians trapped because of the fighting in the old city of Homs in central Syria, the president of the Council, Nigeria Ambassador, Joy Ogwu, announced. SC members had make on Thursday, three hours of consultations
after the Chairperson of humanitarian operations in the United Nations, Valerie Amos, showed the situation in Homs. The British Ambassador, Mark Lyall Grant, said that “trapped civilians in the old city of Homs and in Wa’ar neighborhood are actually exposed to the risk of death because of regime attack.”
Nomination for presidential elections on April 21st Suggestions to elect opponent mufti Ahmad Tohmah, head of the interim government, suggested during a meeting with members of the ‘Islamic Council of Syria”, to choose “a mufti” for Syria, other than “Badr al-Din Hassoun”, the Grand Mufti. In a statement made on Thursday, Tohmah asserted during a meeting with members of the newly formed “Islamic Council of Syria” at the government’s headquarters in Gaziantep, Turkey, on the need to choose a mufti for Syria from the Council. A Syrian government source said a that nomination for presidential elections will begin in April 12th, pointing out that the date for the elections will be announced on the same day. The meeting will be broadcasted live to the official-TV, as the Supreme Constitutional Court will announce the names of candi-
dates . The Syrian Information Minister, Omran Al-Zoubi, said the presidential elections “will not be supervised by any regulatory bodies of any country, whether Arabic or foreign”, stressing that these elections”will be honest and fair” , explaining that the Syrians judges will be the only supervisors of these elections
