INTRODUCTION

Al-Talib, “the student� in Arabic, was the first student-run Muslim newsmagazine in America. Established in 1990 as part of UCLA Student Media, it continues to be a voice for the Muslim-American community. Staff members are all students and the writers are current students or alumni. In the post-9/11 era, Al-Talib is an important medium for the Muslim community to counter Islamophobia in American media by providing a platform for Muslim students to articulate their experiences and perspectives on current events. Additionally, Al-Talib provides experience to graduate and undergraduate students in writing, photography, illustration, video production, graphic design, management, marketing and business. At the height of print media, Al-Talib printed 40,000 issues four times a year and distributed en masse to over 40 states covering most major cities, making it a recognized publication nationwide. However, recent shifts in technology and journalism leads the news magazine to move toward online-based publishing, with an aspiration to create a constant and relevant web presence.

MISSION Al-Talib provides an independent perspective on issues important to Muslim communities. Targeting a college-age audience, we seek to create an outlet for activism on and off campus, a platform for representation of all facets of the Muslim-American communities and a safe space for sensitive topics. We believe that this sort of dialogue, no matter how uncomfortable it may be at times, is necessary in order for our community to appreciate and celebrate its diversity.

ADVERTISING AGREEMENT Rates and contracts

Miscellaneous

Advertisers without a contract will be charged the open rate. A contract must be signed with the Al-Talib to receive frequency or bulk discounts. A bulk or frequency contract shall become effective only upon the approval of the accounting department. If an advertiser fails to order instructions and furnish ad image for space as agreed in the contract, the advertiser will be billed a “short rate” equal to the difference between the contract rate and the appropriate earned rate for the ads actually run.

Mail order addresses must include a street address. Post office box advertising will not be accepted.

Specific placement is neither sold nor guaranteed in regular sections; however, page/section requests are honored whenever possible.

Advertisement images must be sent by the date agreed upon between advertiser and Al-Talib representative.

Contract must be signed in order for sale to be processed.

Paid political advertisements having the appearance of editorial material will be identified as “paid advertisement.”

The Al-Talib reserves the right to amend or reject ad images at its discretion.

Advertising that is designed and produced by the AlTalib staff becomes property of Al-Talib and cannot be reproduced or used without the Al-Talib’s consent.

Payment Terms All advertising rates for Al-Talib herein are net 30 days; no cash discounts or commissions are allowed. Payment in advance is required from all advertisers until credit has been established. Advertisers with approved credit will be invoiced upon publication. Payment is due upon receipt of the invoice. A monthly 1.5% service charge will be added on accounts 30 days delinquent. Accepted forms of payment are cash, check, and Visa, MasterCard and Discover credit cards. There is a $10.00 charge for returned checks. Please include ad copy and payment in check or money order. Allow 5 additional days for campus mail delay.
