FIGHTING OFF A FILIBUSTER
In the battle, and despite being at a clear disadvantage, the Nicaraguan Army defeated the forces of American filibuster William Walker as he attempted to seize power in the Central American country.
A filibuster is an individual that traveled to a foreign country with the intent to foment or support a political revolution. Little did Walker likely know at the time, his actions were hundred-year precursors to what the U.S. would do by proxy amid the Cold War.
In different municipalities, elementary and high school students parade through the streets as part of the national celebration. In Nicaragua, the Battle of San Jacinto has a value almost equal to that of independence and this year, despite restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Central American country maintained its tradition.
On Sept. 14, 1856, in the San Jacinto hacienda, located 42 kilometers northeast of Managua, the battle of the same name was fought.
It was one of the bloodiest battles ever recorded in Nicaragua, in which General José Dolores Estrada and his 180 men defeated some 300 U.S. soldiers led by Walker.
Although he still managed to proclaim himself president of Nicaragua for a time, it is understood that he and his soldiers

En esta batalla, y a pesar de estar en clara desventaja de fuerzas, los miembros del Ejército nicaragüense vencieron a las fuerzas del filibustero estadounidense William Walker cuando pretendía apoderarse de Centroamérica.
Un filibustero es un individuo que viaja a un país extranjero con la intención de fomentar o apoyar una revolución política. Poco sabía Walker en ese momento, sus acciones fueron precursoras de lo que Estados Unidos haría por poder en medio de la Guerra Fría en los próximos cien años.
En diferentes municipios, estudiantes de primaria y de secundaria salieron a desfilar por las calles como parte de la celebración nacional. En Nicaragua, la batalla de San Jacinto tiene un valor casi igual al de la independencia y este año, a pesar de las restricciones por la pandemia del coronavirus, el país centroamericano mantuvo su tradición.
El 14 de septiembre de 1856 en la hacienda de San Jacinto, ubicada a 42 kilómetros al noreste de Managua, se libra la batalla del mismo nombre.
Una de las batallas más cruentas registradas en Nicaragua, en la que el general José Dolores Estrada y sus 180 hombres derrotaron a unos 300 soldados estadounidenses encabezados por Walker.

A CELEBRATION OF FREEDOM
One hundred and sixty-five years after the showdown, Nicaragua celebrates its freedom and the international community joins the celebrations and shows solidarity with the Central American country and its Revolution.
In a virtual event, representatives of social movements, politicians, artists, diplomats, and communicators recognized that the Battle of San Jacinto marked a path to follow for the Nicaraguan people, which served as an inspiration for the rest of the region.
Within the virtual conversations, some thinkers of the region made a parallel of the battle and highlighted the current struggle that the global south is waging against imperialism and capitalism imposed from the north which continues to interfere with the peoples of Latin America. z
CELEBRANDO LA LIBERTAD
A 165 años de este acontecimiento, Nicaragua celebra su libertad y la comunidad internacional se suma a las celebraciones y se solidariza con el país centroamericano y su Revolución a través de una serie de muestras de apoyo y celebración de esta fecha.
Representantes de movimientos sociales, políticos, artistas, diplomáticos, y comunicadores reconocieron en un evento virtual que la batalla de San Jacinto marcó una ruta a seguir para el pueblo nicaragüense, que sirve de inspiración para el resto de la región.
Dentro de las conversaciones virtuales, algunos pensadores de la región hicieron un paralelo de esta batalla y destacaron la lucha actual que el sur global viene librando contra el imperialismo y capitalismo impuesto desde el norte y que continúa interfiriendo sobre los pueblos de Latinoamérica. z
