Nearing the finish line with the expansion of Colbert Combustion Turbine Plant

TVA is building the energy system of the future to enable ongoing and future growth around the Tennessee Valley region, and the addition of three new units at the Colbert Combustion Turbine Plant is one of the major near-term projects that will provide reliable, affordable, resilient and clean energy to Alabamians for decades to come.

On May 12, local power companies, elected officials, members of the media and other stakeholders joined TVA staff for a tour of the site, and to learn about the construction progress underway as we plan to begin commercial operation later this summer.

When completed, three GE model 7F.05 combustion turbine generators, each with a generation capacity of about 250 MW for a combined 750 MW of power will be added to the site. A new, modern control room is also being constructed that will allow TVA staff to operate the units at the existing site from one, consolidated control room.

The new units are being constructed near the area that was once the coal yard for the Colbert Fossil Plant, which is located in Tuscumbia. Like all of TVA’s coal plants, CFP earned a special place in history because of its contribution to electricity generation and jobs in the area.

The former fossil plant at Colbert was the sixth steam-electric project to be planned, designed and constructed by TVA. Units 1 to 4 were built between 1951 and 1955, with a fifth unit added in 1965. The site ceased generation in 2016, as changing technology, increased environmental regulations and economics shifted the importance of coal in TVA’s overall power generation portfolio.

TVA demolished the fossil plant smokestacks in August of 2021, which opened the area for the development of a cleaner energy source. Now those plans are coming full circle.

The two types of natural gas generating units that TVA operates – simple cycle combustion turbines and combined cycle units – produce lower levels of emissions than coal, which helps improve air quality while meeting the growing demand for power in our region.

Simple cycle combustion turbine units quickly meet demand during peak periods such as hot summer afternoons or cold winter nights. These units can reach full power in as little as 17 minutes, and they reduce the need to purchase higher-priced power from external sources during peak periods.

Natural gas also provides the flexibility needed to reliably integrate renewables, supporting TVA’s plan for adding up to 10,000 megawatts of solar into the system in coming years.

Once operational, the new units at Colbert will be integral in TVA’s effort to meet peak power demands in the region.
