Hunter Stallings came to work at South Alabama Electric Cooperative in May 2022 as an electrical engineer. Every day looks a bit different for him because his duties vary from helping maintain SAEC’s metering infrastructure to surveying and marking locations for new electric lines. He grew up in Luverne, where he graduated from Luverne High School. He went on to study at Lurleen B. Wallace Community College in Andalusia for two years, earning his associate degree in science. He transferred to the University of Alabama and graduated with his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
What are your responsibilities?
Stallings: My main responsibilities include working on and improving our Advanced Metering Infrastructure System, which notifies us when a meter loses power. So, if the power goes out, the consumer doesn’t have to call us because we are already working on it. I also do system checks, which includes checking down line breakers, substations and regulators. System improvements, underground locates for members who may be doing construction on their property and staking are also part of my duties.
What made you want to join the SAEC team?
Stallings: SAEC is a great place to work and build a career while still being close to my hometown of Luverne.
What is your favorite part of the job?
Stallings: My favorite part of the job is building a relationship with all the men and women who work here at SAEC.
What do you think is the most important impact SAEC has on its community?
Stallings: At SAEC, we do everything we can to make sure each member is satisfied while still being able to provide safe, reliable and affordable electricity to rural communities.
What’s your favorite thing to do when you aren’t working? Any interesting hobbies?
Stallings: In my free time, I like to hunt, fish, play golf and hang out with my friends.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Stallings: Be patient and persistent. Life is not so much what you accomplish as what you overcome. n
