Q&A

Dr. Abdullah Al-Alshaikh President, International Desalination Association

What technological innovations within the desalination sector have you been most excited about recently? A: There are three innovations I consider very exciting. The first are the developments in building large capacity desalination units. Plants using Energy Recovery Devices (ERDs) and RO membranes. These are very cost effective. Secondly, RO membrane technology is very exciting. Finally, we are quickly solving, one by one, what was once considered the limitations of RO technology. Now we have much larger diameter membranes, capable of handling high salinity with high permeability, increasing yields and lowering the amount of fouling. And thirdly, the development of hybrid systems involving thermal (MED and MSF) and membrane processes (RO), optimising the methods by leveraging the strengths of each technology and compensating for their disadvantages. Which ongoing desalination projects and developments across the globe have you been most impressed by and why? A: Let me begin by mentioning a project in my own backyard, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia – the newly commissioned Ras AlKhair plant. It has a production capacity of 1.025 million cubic meters per day (m3/d) and 2,400 MW of electricity. In South Korea, the Busan desalination RO plant is also very worth mentioning, pioneering the use of large diameter membranes with a high yield production of 45 million litres per day. The Hyflux plant in Singapore, using seawater feed and RO membrane, is operated with a miniscule number of operators compared to traditional plants. And finally, here in the UAE, the new extension being built at the Fujairah 1 Independent Water and Power Plant (IWPP) is setting the benchmark in energy efficiency,

6

Q

reducing energy requirements below the four kilowatt hours per cubic metre threshold. And thirdly, the development of hybrid systems involving thermal (MED and MSF) and membrane processes (RO), optimising the methods by leveraging the strengths of each technology and compensating for their disadvantages.

The GCC region has been at the forefront of the global desalination sector for the past few decades. Do you see this leadership role continuing in the coming decades? A: Absolutely, if for no other reason, the need for water, the population growth and economic development requires the GCC to lead in desalination. We also have a great talent pool of young leaders here in the region, and because the industry is of strategic interest in the region, it tends to attract some of the brightest of the bright young minds. This is not to say, however, that other regions do not and will not lead in the future. All regions of the world will

&

intensify their reliance on desalination in the decades to come. In your view, is the desalination industry being taken as seriously as it should be by both the public and governments across the region? A: Governments understand that desalination drives economic growth and provides for the needs of society. Just look at how production has increased over the years to understand how seriously they take it. In 1960, water production was about 58,000 m3/d, but today it is 80.9 million m3/d. This phenomenal increase was only possible because of the keen interest and huge investment by governments across the globe. Additionally, governments have organised themselves around water needs, creating separate ministries and high-level leadership roles to deliver on water needs and implement water strategy. The industry’s profile has grown and matured over recent years, and this reflects public support and awareness of the critical role the industry plays. It has become “big industry” for many countries, and its international conferences and workshops are well attended and growing. How do you envision the role of the International Desalination Association (IDA) evolving in the coming years? A: The IDA’s role is to lead. It is to set out where we are going and facilitate our getting there as an industry. It is about innovation, which is why sustainability is so important, because it drives us in a new direction and pushes forth innovation. We are on the cusp of creating an entirely new world with technological and industrial innovation, and the desalination industry is at the centre of this change. The IDA’s role is to ensure we as an industry sector embrace the change, learn from others and set an example to follow.

NEWS Artificial springs to be dug in Bahrain BAHRAIN HAS LAUNCHED an ambitious project to dig a number of artificial springs in order to increase the country's water resources. The plan, which has been spearheaded by the Municipalities and Urban Planning Affairs Ministry, has been undergoing a pilot phase in Isa Town, Zayed Town, Rumaitha and Dar Kulaib, with the ministry hoping the project will help reduce the percentage of treated water used in agriculture. Bahrain currently produces close to 90 million cubic centimetres of treated water a day, of which 60 per cent goes towards agricultural needs.

Ministry Affairs Assistant UnderSecretary, Dr Salman Al Khuzaie, commented, “We are looking to reduce that 60 per cent and direct the water into other uses, and for that we are looking into hydroponics and new techniques to reduce reliance on it and excess consumption. “Bahrain doesn't have a lot of rain and most natural springs have dried up besides sewage leakages to the ground. We have possible locations that we are planning to dig – we may succeed or fail, but we have to carry out tests,” Al Khuzaie added.

According to its Japanese manufacturer, the high performance of PTFE is down to the material's excellent chemical and heat resistance. The firm's proprietary threedimensional fibril structure of PTFE membrane, combined with its chemical resistance, is able to prevent fouling by oil, and also allows membrane cleaning by harsh chemicals. Wastewater with a high-oil content can be directly charged into the membrane system without the need for pretreatment units, and the system can also be used for municipal water and wastewater treatments such as MBR, as well as pretreatment for desalination. Sumitomo Electric Industries recently donated ¥5 million (AED 175,000) to alleviate damage inflicted in the Philippines by Typhoon Haiyan. The tropical cyclone, which devastated large parts of the Philippines in November 2013, was recorded as the deadliest typhoon to have hit the country. Sumitomo Electric Industries' local subsidiary, Sumitomo Wiring Systems Ltd., also made a sizeable contribution to the rescue and clean up operation, with a donation of approximately ¥7 million (AED 246,000). The money was provided to the region through the Japanese Red Cross Society and other charity and aid organisations.
