Welcome Letter
His Excellency Mustafa Jassem Al-Shamali Deputy Prime Minister Minister of Oil State of Kuwait On behalf of the Government of Kuwait and the Ministry of Oil, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all guests, delegates, and exhibitors who have joined us for the inaugural Society of Petroleum Engineers Kuwait Oil & Gas Show and Conference - KOGS 2013 - which is being held under the patronage of the Prime Minister of the State of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah.
H.E. Mustafa Jassem Al-Shamali Deputy Prime Minister
Today, the oil and gas industry seeks increasingly innovative solutions to meet growing demand for energy in the face of evermore difficult challenges. This important event attempts to address some of these challenges, and it brings together an extraordinary and welcome level of expertise to one of the most prolific hydrocarbon regions in the world. KOGS 2013 provides an important forum and opportunity for participants to contribute, debate and provide solutions that will shape the future of the industry and our region.
Minister of Oil State of Kuwait
The exhibition features more than 160 exhibitors from 20 countries worldwide. It serves as an important showcase for the latest technologies whilst acting as a conduit for the strategic collaborations and healthy competition that helps drives us forward. Out of the many participants we are honoured to receive GCC national oil companies, international supermajors, service industry giants, national groups and numerous other specialists from across the globe at this exceptional event. The parallel high level technical conference and its theme “The Power of Collaboration, People and Technology in the Oil and Gas Industry, cites the importance of cooperation and challenges the oil and gas industry to move forward with adaptively intelligent technologies, out-of-the-box business models and exceptional human skills. This pace-setting agenda incorporates senior keynote speakers, 4 executive level panel discussions, and more than 100 paper and poster presentations delivered by peers; whose professional insights and case studies will no doubt be of great benefit to all delegates. I would like to congratulate and thank the KOGS 2013 conference committee chaired by Mr. Nizar M. Al-Adsani, Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, and the organisers for all their hard work and enthusiasm in producing such an all-inclusive event. I am also honoured to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to His Highness the Prime Minister for his continuous support. My sincere best wishes for a successful conference and exhibition.

Conference Opening Ceremony & Executive Plenary Session Monday, 7 October The Regency Kuwait Conference Opening Ceremony 1630–1730 hours | Maha Ballroom
Welcome Remarks by: His Highness Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, Prime Minister, State of Kuwait
Nizar Al-Adsani, Chief Executive Officer, Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC)
Hashem S. Hashem, Chief Executive Officer, Kuwait Oil Company (KOC)
Hosnia Hashim, Vice President Operations, Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company (KUFPEC)
The traditional boundaries set by usual business competition practices in the oil and gas industry have broken down, opening up to a new business framework where collaborative practices are more and more implemented in new and innovative frameworks, contracts, and commercial agreements, to ensure that commercial success is achieved through joint efforts of all partners involved. In this way, technology solutions may be enabled by joint research efforts of different sectors and locations, and most importantly, people from different companies, regions, and industries are encouraged by new work and contract frameworks to collaborate, creating and sharing more knowledge to be more efficient, to reduce costs and to operate in a safer and more sustainable manner. The industry is already in the midst of an era of intensive technological and cooperative endeavours, which even if driven by business needs, are already differentiating this sector as one that applies collaboration efforts at an unprecedented scale. Examples in oil and gas where the power of collaboration, people and technology, completely transformed businesses schemes are the oil sands and shale gas exploitation, the offshore operation of marginal fields, and the joint ventures established for non-conventional resources like tight gas or heavy oil. This is an unfolding transformation that is known to all actors in this story. The invited speakers of this Executive Plenary Session will showcase their organisations’ learnings and success stories in boosting the power of collaboration, people, and technology, to maximise the results of their operations in upstream and downstream. They will relate their vision about the power of engaging in collective initiatives, with the best people and the best technological solutions to empower the industry’s results, reputation and performance. Speakers:
Egbert Imomoh, 2013 SPE President
H.E. Abdalla Salem El Badri, Secretary General, Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC)
Executive Plenary Session: The Power of Collaboration, People and Technology in the Oil & Gas Industry 1730–1930 hours | Maha Ballroom

Moderator:
Adnan Shihab-Eldin, Director General, KFAS
Now, more than ever, public attention is focused on companies that are capable of improving environmental, social and economic performance. The oil and gas industry is building a trail of success in doing exactly that, with a strategic interlace of collaboration, people, and technology.

Tuesday, 8 October Kuwait International Fair Panel Session 1: Growing Our Organisational Capabilities 1000–1130 hours | Room 1 Moderators:
Ali Al-Jarwan, Chief Executive Officer, ADMA-OPCO
But the current scenario in the energy sector poses several important challenges like the different learning styles of the new generations, the new environmental regulations, the participation of new energy sources and unconventional in the markets, and full use of the oil and gas market potential covering the entire supply chain. So, how do we build new capabilities in the energy sector? How do we learn in a faster pace as organisations? How do we identify our key or unique organisational strengths? And how do we instil dynamic capabilities to favour quick transformations? All these questions shape the way ahead in growing organisational capabilities in the vibrant energy world, where in summary, preparing people to handle the future is needed to be done right and fast. Panelists:
Hosnia Hashim, Vice President Operations, Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company (KUFPEC)
The main challenge that the industry is facing today is to deal with the expansion of production of oil and gas of conventional resources in faster cycles than ever before. In most organisations, activities are at least doubling in rig counts and number of mega projects in up-, mid- and downstream. In addition, emphasis on integrity management, HSE, quality and risk management of old facilities is certainly increasing to meet new regulations and standards. Organisations in the energy sector are engaged with the enhancement— in an accelerated pace—of their workforce, technology road maps and collaboration efforts. This thrilling setting pushes the need to identify the collective skills and processes in each company that enable success. It is then necessary to develop and monitor the organisation dynamics, as well as the capabilities of professionals and leadership teams to enable an effective management of the needed changes driven by ever expanding demands in quantity and quality of increasing output. There is pressure to stretch and improve the organisation capabilities to match the expectations of the governments and stakeholders at large in sustainable manner. An organisation culture of aligned and collaborative teams usually embraces and manages the intended changes in more reasonable and effective manners, developing at the same time inertia and capability to handle the increase in activities in every direction. New strategies in competencies development, technology deployment, projects management for multiple mega projects, centres of excellence, along the definition of processes to manage and integrate the increasingly numerous interfaces internally and externally shall all enable improvements in organisation capabilities so that achieving set targets will be possible with the expected levels of excellence.

The GCC countries have more conventional hydrocarbon reserves than anywhere else in the world, and the region is inter-connected by world class highways and shipping routes that span manageable distances in addition to abundant, safe and reliable air transportation routes. Individually each country in the GCC would like to maximise its in-country value in terms of oil and gas training, manufacturing, and research centres as well as the nationalisation of its workforce. Collectively the region has the opportunity to cooperate in terms of enhancing utilisation, reducing costs, and sharing best practices and lessons learned in a way that would significantly benefit everyone in the oil and gas industry. Unfortunately, the reality is that today we are a long way from this ideal co-existence. The purpose of this panel is to: t Explore what the actual hurdles and challenges are today t Attempt to understand and explain why these hurdles and challenges exist t Debate the pros and cons of easier movement of oil & gas personnel and equipment between the GCC countries t Identify actions required in order to turn the vision into reality This is definitely a complex and provocative subject that encompasses many different issues, however it is only through frank and honest discussion that change for the better will occur. Hussam Abuseif, Director of Marketing and Business Development, Middle East, Baker Hughes Upstream investment is primarily driven by expectations concerning spare capacity. The demand is still higher than the available capacity therefore we expect more capital from all sectors in the industry including and not limited to NOC, IOC and service industry. Such investment required is coming with several global challenges that might affect our industry: t Spare production capacity and market behaviour t Security and investment t Oil price and sustainability Collaboration would be a way to secure spare capacity and reduce geopolitical risk. Technology development and joint research projects are means to maximise production of existing fields. Training and developing local talent and resources pave the way for future and sustainability. Creative business models and contractual agreements are needed in sharing risk as much as the reward.

With the increasing role and obligation of the oil and gas companies to participate, be recognised and supported by the society, one of the many challenges to overcome are how they differentiate their CSR initiatives from corporate charity contributions, investing in strategic programmes that will support, enhance and enable their image and communication strategies to achieve their strategic business objectives, fulfilling at the same time their responsibility as part of the society. A responsible oil and gas operator is, contentiously, a zealous protector of the environment, a keen preventer of industrial accidents and losses, that applies robust management practices in HSE, Integrity and Maintenance Management, along with an effective communication strategy. In fact, the most successful companies are those not only pro-active in protecting their resources, taking the employees’ lives and knowledge as their most important assets, but those who position these objectives with a communication strategy aimed at all sectors of society, establishing and raising the awareness and acceptance about their work towards life quality improvements in a sustainable way. These successful organisations establish a culture that is extended as a natural, generative contribution to the improvement of life quality in society and related corporations and Government departments in a collaborative mode and in various aspects of life. Additionally, these organisations do utilise innovative communication channels based on network-based media, to especially include the young generations and technology-driven profiles in our super-networked societies, as they demand and are used to more frequent, direct, and two-way interactions.

Special Session: Communication, Image and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) 1315–1445 hours | Room 3 Moderators:

Building real CSR practices and policies is key in the promotion of a corporation’s brand value and reputation, and in the building of a credible and reliable image as a business partner that contributes to the economy, people, enterprise, and society development. It is therefore imperative to understand such stakeholder’s expectations in order to build realistic and successful CSR programmes. h h ll b d d h dh h Another challenge to be considered is where and how these organisations implement CSR best practices and the new international Social Responsibility Standard – ISO 26000, which sets the framework for the future of responsible management and provides practical assistance to implement social responsibility, enhancing the transparency and credibility of reports and other communications initiatives.

Today KDC is a subsidiary of the Contracting and Marine Services Company KSC. Although Santa Fe’s share is now held by Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC), the state-owned entity that controls all hydrocarbon activities in the State of Kuwait, we are continuing to build on its legacy. The involvement of Santa Fe in the establishment of KDC provided us with access to highly-experienced rig crews and advanced technical know-how when we commenced operations in 1965. This ability to harness external expertise was reinforced when we entered into a technical services agreement with Parker Drilling Company of the USA. Since 1965, KDC has drilled more than 2,150 wells on behalf of Kuwait Oil Company, the KPC-owned company that undertakes all exploration and extraction activities in Kuwait, Libya and Joint Operations, the Kuwait-Saudi entity that controls all oil gas activities in the Divided Zone between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Our experience encompasses a wide variety of vertical, horizontal and deviated well drilling assignments to depths ranging from 4,700 to 22,235 feet. Our expertise covers drilling for exploration, development and work-over purposes, and includes mobile rig operations, deep test drilling for natural gas, and off-shore jack-up rigs. Currently we are expanding our modern fleet of 750 to 3000hp shallow drilling and work-over, intermediate and deep drilling rigs to service the ever-expanding scale of our operations. Today, with over four decades of experience and after drilling and maintaining more than 2,150 oil and gas wells under a wide variety of conditions, Kuwait Drilling Company has the reputation for highly efficient, reliable and safe operations that expresses deep customer satisfaction.

Our business is supplying energy products and services to customers worldwide. To do that we are counting first and foremost on oil and gas, which are far from being depleted. Our oil and gas activities range from exploration and production to refining, shipping and trading. We are also investing in renewable energies, with a particular emphasis on photovoltaic solar energy and biomass. We have moved up our timeline for capital expenditure in those sectors, so that we can offer efficient, reliable solutions to partner fossil energies. Total is also a world-class chemical producer, leveraging our integrated business model to produce hydrocarbon-based polymers. As well, we are active in specialty chemicals, a business line that encompasses elastomers, adhesives and electroplating. Present in more than 130 countries around the world, our 97,000 employees are producing the energy and products our planet needs, while demonstrating the four cornerstone behaviours of the Total Attitude: boldness, mutual support, listening and cross-functionality. Total has a long history in Kuwait with a continuous presence since 1997. Total Kuwait is providing the Group's expertise to KPC and its affiliates through a technical service agreement and has been involved, during the last 16 years, in different operations aside KOC and KGOC.
