INTERVIEW
Questions
Answers Kris Sutton Technical Director at Solar Energy International
Founded in 1991 as a non-profit educational organisation, the mission of Solar Energy International (SEI) is 'to empower people around the world through the education of sustainable practices'. The organisation's Technical Director, Kris Sutton, is leading today's Solar Middle East Workshop and spoke to MEE Daily about the increasing role of solar in the region's energy mix, the rising output of modern solar systems, and reveals what attendees can expect from today's workshop. MEE DAILY: Please can you give us a brief overview of what Solar Energy International is and the work that the organisation does?
systems. The training is designed for people who are engineering, designing, installing and troubleshooting PV systems.
KRIS SUTTON: Solar Energy International (SEI) is a renewable energy technical training company based in Colorado, USA. SEI is a non-profit educational organisation with a mission to provide technical training and expertise in renewable energy to empower people, communities and businesses worldwide. Founded in 1991, we have trained over 35,000 alumni in renewable energy worldwide. We teach classes various renewable technologies although our primary focus is solar electric or photovoltaic (PV) system technology.
MEE DAILY: Solar power seems like an 'easy energy option' within the Middle East region. Is this really the case and what are the challenges that need to be overcome to better utilise what appears to be a plentiful energy resource?
MEE DAILY: As the technical director of SEI and 'trainer of trainers' what can people expect to learn from you during today's workshop? KRIS SUTTON: SEI is known for its practical solar training and we pride ourselves on having experts with extensive real-world experience. We focus on how to design, install, and maintain systems for maximum system performance. Personally, I have been working full time in the PV industry since 1999, with nearly 15 years in this industry. My focus is on PV applications, technology, design and installation best practices. I have a mix of experience between battery-based off-grid, grid-connected with battery-backup, as well as residential, commercial and utility-scale grid-connected power systems. MEE DAILY: What do you hope people that attend the workshop will take away with them or do with the information you give them? KRIS SUTTON: I hope that everyone that attends the workshop will leave with a better understanding of applications, capabilities and limitations of solar electric power
KRIS SUTTON: Yes, solar power is plentiful in the Middle East and most of the world. It is of course the most abundant source of energy on our planet. The limitations are scale, cost, storage, market and knowledge. On scale, every year the size of systems and the scale of solar gets bigger. Fifteen years ago, 10 kW was a huge PV system. Ten years ago, 100 kW was a big system, now 5-50 MW PV systems are normal and gigawatts of solar are common discussions. Costs of solar are reducing at a rate far quicker than most people have ever expected, and solar is now cost effective against fossil fuel in many markets around the world. The solar market has the capability of high levels of grid penetration without energy storage, but at a certain level energy storage will be a requirement for continued growth. This is known to the solar industry, the utilities and the energy storage industry. The battery and storage industry are moving at record pace trying to develop and deploy largescale energy storage systems to handle the future growth of solar and other renewables. The cost of energy storage in large-scale applications still remains high today, although these prices are rapidly decreasing and technology is improving at record paces. Last but not least is knowledge. That's where SEl comes in. As an organisation SEI works hard day in and day out to teach people how to properly design and install PV systems for the rapid growth and deployment of solar technology.
6 Middle East Electricity | Day Three
MEE DAILY: While there are ambitious plans in place to increase the role solar power plays within the region's energy mix in certain places like Saudi Arabia and Qatar, do you believe that the region is fully embracing solar as an energy option? KRIS SUTTON: Yes and no. Yes, because the discussion has begun, there is effort and momentum in the direction of embracing solar as part of the energy mix. It is a challenge for oil rich nations to fully embrace solar due to their low costs of energy. So the fact that the region is starting to look to solar as a future energy supply is forward thinking, and that's a great start. When the economy of the region is based in abundant oil, it's challenging to push a higher cost alternative, so I don't fault the region for not being further ahead based on the situation. Solar has been expensive, and although it's prices are dropping rapidly competing directly with oil is still a financial challenge. Give it a few more years and it could be a different discussion.
MEE DAILY: Do you see solar energy as being THE answer to spiralling energy demand within the Middle East or just as a vital part of an energy mix that includes nuclear and fossilbased power? KRIS SUTTON: Well, on the spiralling demand question, the demand for energy is a combination of issues. One is the rapid growth of the region - more people, more buildings, more air conditioning, more demand. The other issue that I see in certain areas at least is the fact that the prices for energy are highly subsidised. And when consumers don't pay the true price for energy, there is less interest in conservation of energy. It's hard to get people to use less energy when it costs them so little. When it hurts your bank account people will change their habits. I am personally a firm believer in a 100 per cent renewable energy end game. But I'm also very technical and practical. I know full ! continues on next page

well that solar is not able to replace all other sources of generation over night, and though the cost of energy production is dropping quickly, we need storage and smart grid management to follow along. For a little while longer it will require a mix of energy sources, until we can get massive energy storage and smart grid management techniques deployed to compliment solar energy production. MEE DAILY: How do you perceive the future of the solar energy industry in the region and what role do you see SEI playing? KRIS SUTTON: I perceive the future of the solar industry to continue to grow into a robust market in the region. SEI provides not only solar training, but third party services (consisting of design review, commissioning, and troubleshooting) for developers and system owners, which are invaluable especially within an emerging market. SEI's role in that market growth is up to the local industry. We only go where we are invited. We have been developing relationships with local business and governments who continue to ask us for training assistance and third party assistance. We hope to have a long term role in the development of the solar market in the region. If we can be of technical assistance we are happy to help.

SDMO launches genset models at MEE SDMO HAS LAUNCHED two new generating set models at Middle East Electricity this year. The K27 generating set features a maximum power of 27 kVA and a new engine manufactured by Kohlar. Philippe Forest, Communications Department Manager for SDMO, described the product as “very compact, inexpensive and easy to use”. The model is being exhibited for the first time at MEE 2014 alongside another debutant – the GZ60 generating set. Targeting markets in Africa, the Middle East and Russia, the GZ60 has a gas engine, rather than a more traditional gasoline engine, and can use either natural gas or LPG as fuel. Alongside these two machines, the company has also been exhibiting the R1650C generating set, which features a special cooling system and has been designed to cope well with the region’s arid weather conditions, as well as a model from the company’s popular Rental Power Compact range, launched in the Middle East earlier this year. Speaking about the French manufacturer’s participation in the 39th edition of Middle East Electricity, Forest remarked, “It has proven to be a very dynamic show. “We get to see a lot of our competitors, suppliers and distributors, and it is great to see that after all these years it’s still a very good show.”

Leading lights gather in Dubai Innovations within the lighting industry have led to LED and compact fluorescent products competing with traditional lighting fixtures
Modern illumination can transform the sales or rental prospects of a modern development. Designers and contractors come from all over the world to check the latest trends and innovations at MEE.

NSTALLING OPTIMUM LIGHTING can ensure the commercial success of a modern residential development or refurbishment. Luminaire fixtures and fittings, their controls and their locations should all be designed to complement the lifestyles of potential occupants. When planning the wiring, switches and access points developers need to be able to predict what activities will be taking place where, and when. Food preparation and study, for example, need better and more intensified illumination than leisure and entertainment activities. The impact on natural light of door and window openings should be remembered, but the choice of furnishing fabrics and other colour schemes/decorative features should always be left to the purchasers or tenants. When in doubt, the services of a lighting specialist can be sought, as now employed by some equipment suppliers in the Gulf. He or she will always take into account the availability or otherwise of natural daylight. A good specialist will start out by asking what the customer wants the lighting fixtures and fittings to achieve, expecting a different answer for different positions within the development. The different types of lighting are usually described as ‘general background’, ‘task orientated’ and ‘mood’.
General lighting, usually but not always centrally placed and fixed overhead, provides overall illumination without any troubling and distracting glare, and is suitable for all members of the household. It provides comfort and safety whenever natural illumination is inadequate, and can provide an impressive ‘wow’ factor, as displayed in the entrance halls of many Gulf hotels. Usually left on for extended periods of time, even permanently, and therefore ideally suited to non-incandescent lamps, it is often designed to be supplemented with smaller localised appliances that provide focused illumination for specific tasks as and when required. Functional task-orientated illumination is designed to be switched on and off as required, allowing the occupants to carry out physical activities such as playing, reading, writing or hobby craftwork. There are many specific types of fitting available, some of these designed to be permanently attached and others moveable around the room, or even the entire residence. The quality of such task lighting is important, and some of the latest LED and compact fluorescent devices provide an excellent match with natural daylight. The important thing with task lighting is to avoid shadows and distracting glare without losing readability. Generally the

older the users are, the more important the location and quality of this type of lighting is. Finally there is mood lighting, called ‘accent’ in North America. Often provided in the form of a wall-mounted fitting or recess, this is designed to create a lasting and appropriate impression once the space is entered,
even sometimes to invite people in, as in a hospitality suite. It can be used to create a specific mood – sometimes enhanced by recorded music or other means – and, when well designed, will draw the occupants’ attention to a decorative features such as artwork, an outside view or a public speaker. Middle East Electricity is once again providing visitors with the opportunity to investigate the information and services offered by the world’s specialised lighting industry trade associations. Whatever the combination of types of illumination chosen, the sources of light supplied should be adequately matched to purpose. Their installation needs to be designed in terms of the amount of power they ! continues on next page

consume, the varying amounts of light and heat produced, the efficiency of the device (how many lumens are produced from each watt of input), and the amount of useful light that actually reaches the subject when it is needed. Energy efficient light sources like fluorescents and LEDs are universally approved by energy specialists, both in terms of power consumption and the life of the devices themselves, and by utility companies – but in some ‘ambience’ circumstances the warm glow of a traditional incandescent can still hit the right note. Various add-on reflective treatments can be used to boost the energy efficiency of these.
A good lighting designer will consider the frequency and difficulty of fitting new and replacement sources, as well as automated controls that sense movement and switch themselves off when the luminaire is not in use. Research in various countries has shown that up to one-tenth of the electricity used in a modern home can be used to energise lighting circuits alone. Power is an increasingly scarce resource everywhere, especially now that so many older generating stations are having to be retired. Choosing the right fixtures and fittings can make a big difference to the load placed on your local utility; the lighting section of MEE is the best place to see the widest selection available anywhere today.
