Mediterranean Islands ALL ABOUT THE
S
o, half way into 2015, and the two major island destinations in the Med have been through their ups and downs already. The demise of Cyprus Airways got the year off to a bad start for Cyprus, but that was only a temporary blip for flight capacity to the island as other carriers rushed to pick up slots, and three other airlines have applied for operating licences in recent months to start services from the destination. Meanwhile, in Greece, the election of anti-austerity party Syriza back in January and the Greek National Tourism Organisation in the UK advising visitors to take some cash with them and not to solely rely on credit cards or local ATMs has also ignited some concerns among particular anxious Brits. However, speaking to the tourist boards and operators, the market looks strong. Cyplon Holidays hasn’t seen any dip in demand, and in fact has reported an increase in bookings, particularly for its Classical Tour of Greece; Sunvil has seen an increase in family bookings to Greece following a few years of subdued demand; and the Cyprus Tourism Organisation has unveiled plans to refocus its efforts on the UK market which is already paying off with an increase in UK visitors for the first four months this year, and summer bookings up on last year. So, the islands in the Mediterranean are looking set to be a big favourite with the UK market this year, and to help you sell more holidays to the destinations and rack up that extra commission, we have divided this year’s supplement into two features: one that focuses on the larger islands in the Med, and the other that looks at the smaller, quieter isles. In the first feature, we look at what’s on offer from operators to Cyprus, Greece, Sardinia, Corsica and Sicily, while in the second feature, we look at the popular destination of Malta, and the smaller islands in Greece and Italy. I hope you enjoy this year’s All About The Mediterranean Islands supplement and look forward to your feedback. Angela Cronin Supplements editor

Paphos' many ancient attractions have helped it earn the title of European Capital of Culture in 2017
Cyprus This year got off to a challenging start for Cyprus tourism with the demise of the country’s flag carrier, Cyprus Airways, after 68 years. The ongoing economic crisis and increasing competition from low-costs signalled the death knell for one of Europe’s oldest airlines. However, other airlines have stepped in to fill in the gaps including Aegean Airlines which announced earlier this year that it would increase the number of destinations it serves from Cyprus to 14. These include the introduction of direct daily services from Heathrow to Larnaca and the launch of a direct flight between Athens and Paphos. Aegean’s summer 2015 schedule also includes direct connections with Heraklion and Rhodes, while direct connections with Mykonos and Santorini will be added in July and August. Also just last month, three carriers applied for operating licences in Cyprus. One of these airlines is believed to be
Cobalt Air, which wants to operate flights from Cyprus to destinations across Europe, replacing the chasm left by the demise of Cyprus Airways. The heightened activity around potential new flight capacity is also reflected by the Cyprus Tourism Organisation’s plans to place greater emphasis on the UK market, with more of a focus on promoting events and winter attractions. Angelos Loizou, chairman of the CTO’s board of directors, says: “The UK has always been an important market for Cyprus. For a decade we have been losing our share to other developing and cheaper destinations. We are pleased to see that in the first four months of 2015, tourist arrivals from the UK have increased by 15.8%, with strong forward bookings for the summer 2015 period. “The island has always been promoted as a ‘sun and sea’ destination, but over the years, great efforts have been made to highlight the many and varied niche products that the island offers.
“Our unique offering will result in the lengthening of the tourist season. These objectives are to be achieved within the sustainability framework (we have partnered with the Travel Foundation on a number of projects) of detailed action plans and long term strategy relating to product development, quality and marketing. “We are encouraged by the results of UK arrivals so far and will continue to work with our key partners in the UK to continue on this upward trend and to establish the island as a year-round tourist destination, with particular emphasis on the winter months.” Events include the Harvest Festival that runs from the middle of October through to November, and Zenobia Week. The CTO has also reported summer bookings for this year 10% up on last year, with winter sales getting off to a good start too. CTO UK director Orestis Rossides said the Cyprus tourism product keeps on improving: “Together with Malta, Cyprus was voted as the Mediterranean

larger islands country with the cleanest beaches in a survey by the European Union in 2015. “Limassol was voted as one of the upcoming tourism resorts in a CNN survey as a result of its extensive infrastructural improvements, the complete restoration of the old Castle area and the new Limassol Marina. While Larnaca has also improved its infrastructure, with a new seaside promenade connecting the old town with the trendy MacKenzie beach area. “Meanwhile, Paphos has been named as a European Capital of Culture in 2017 and this will help to strengthen the resort's image as a historic town and create a new European identity.” As regards to emerging trends among Brits visiting the island, Rossides says: “Both road cycling and mountain biking are proving popular in the spring, golf in the off-peak months and with 500 miles of well-sign-posted walking trails, trekking is proving very popular in spring and in the autumn. “The newest cycling route is 42 miles long and reaches a height of 1,200 metres above sea level, starting at Limassol Marina and travelling through traditional villages in the Troodos mountains with panoramic views, ending at Psilo Dentro in Pano Platres. “For wine lovers, there are seven wine routes to choose from with small boutique wineries producing awardwinning wines.” The CTO is keen to maintain its strong links with the trade to ensure that the message gets out about the renewed focus on the UK market. Rossides says: “Our sales officers undertake sales calls to travel agencies all over the UK. “They also arrange a number of training sessions with tour operators and agency consortia to highlight the new developments of the island and in particular to promote the island’s winter product. “Educationals are organised in spring and autumn for groups of up to 15 agents. The itineraries are organised in such a way so that agents can experience the USPs of each region as well as visit a selection of hotels. Some educationals are themed for special-

larger islands and Mykonos. ”We are seeing a revival of family demand in August after a few years when the family market has been more subdued - we think this is down to a combination of people having a little more money to spend (or confidence to spend it) and the fact that low-cost airline fares in August are very expensive, making charter-based package holidays much better value.” Aldemar Hotels the Greek island of Rhodes has welcomed the renovation and refurbishment of the five-star, allinclusive Aldemar Resort Amilia Mare in Kalithea, Rhodes. Work carried out on the luxury resort included the refurbishment and decoration of all the rooms and bathrooms to include new equipment/facilities such as new plasma screens, lighting, veranda furniture, hairdryers, doors and shower glass panels. The five-star, all-inclusive Aldemar Paradise Village next door has also been refurbished. The two hotels each have eight restaurants and clients staying in either of the two properties can benefit from an all-inclusive product that provides them with a choice of lunchtime and evening meals at any one of the eight restaurants. Mandy Kalliontzi, sales director responsible for the UK market, said: “We know how popular quality allinclusives are for the UK market and, as we have established an excellent rapport with UK tour operators and retailers, we are sure that these two hotels will perform very well following on from their refurbishments.” Meanwhile, over in Crete, the Royal Mare Luxury Resort and Thalasso has introduced 120 VIP rooms with sharing pools, all of which are fully redecorated and refurbished. This project has also seen the introduction of the VIP Dine-around programme where VIP guests are treated to their daily VIP breakfast at the El Greco restaurant, and for dinner, they have the choice of any of the five a la carte restaurants. Kalliontzi said: “Our three distinguished hotels on Crete have

performed exceptionally well with the UK market. The Royal Mare Luxury Resort and Thalasso has a special magic that ticks many boxes especially for couples, of all ages. We are delighted that British Airways has introduced three times weekly flights into Crete, providing those that want a luxury accommodation option on Greece’s most southerly and largest island, with a choice of travelling in luxury too.” Aldemar’s five-star resort in Skafidia near the ancient site of Olympia on the west coast of Peloponnese has also gone through a makeover. The Olympian Village Resort has introduced 120 new rooms, family rooms and apartments, as well as refurbishing 32 bungalows with sea views and six seafront suites with sharing pools. aldemar-resorts.gr Olympic Holidays introduced island-hopping around Greece more than 10 years ago, and it has seen its popularity soar, which has prompted the eastern Mediterranean specialist to list 15 twin-centre combinations in its Summer Sun brochure for this year. Commercial director Photis Lambrianides says: "Island-hopping is now among our most successful products. Clients buy a week's package to the main island and add on the second week's accommodation with a transfer supplement. The operator recommends a number of twin-centres including Kos with Kalymnos; Santorini with Ios; and Corfu with Paxos. A particularly popular twin centre is

Rhodes and Symi. These two islands are just 23 miles apart and are very close to the Turkish mainland. Commercial director Photis Lambrianides says this combination offers an appealing contrast in holiday styles as Symi is small with a scattering of settlements and Rhodes is one of the largest among the Greek islands. On arrival, visitors are greeted with the sight of many Italian-style mansions dotted along the hillsides around pretty Yialos Harbour. Symi Town is a delight and a very peaceful haven, and is a must visit as well as the Nautical Museum and sixth-century Monastery of the Archangel Michael Panormitis. Accommodation from Olympic Holidays on Symi includes small hotels of up to 56 rooms, along with a 25room holiday village and a selection of self-catering studios and apartments. “After a week chilling out on ultrarelaxing Symi, a short sea trip puts clients in the busier holiday environment of Rhodes, where they can choose from resorts large and small, but still with the ambience that makes Greek islands so special,” adds Lambrianides. Rhodes makes a striking contrast to Symi, with its golden sandy beaches, lively resorts such as Ixia and Faliraki, picturesque Lindos beneath its ancient acropolis, and historic capital Rhodes Town with its medieval old quarter. How much? Olympic Holidays offers a 14-night twin-centre holiday, staying one week in a one-bedroom apartment at the Anastasia Apartments in Symi on

Crete For clients looking for big island luxury, Carrier recommends they check out Crete, the fifth-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, and the largest in Greece. The island has its fair share of ancient sights to see including the birthplace of Zeus which can be found in a cave high up in one of the three Cretan mountains. A journey up to the caves takes visitors through the Lassithi
plateau, which is one of the few areas in the Mediterranean with permanent inhabitants at an altitude of more than 800 metres. Then there’s also the Palace of Knossos, which is considered to be Europe's oldest city. Travellers seeking Cretan chic head to Elounda, located to the east of the island, which offers stylish accommodation on stunning beachfront locations. From Elounda, visitors can enjoy a private boat trip to Spinalonga Island, a former leper colony until 1957, and the inspiration for best-selling novel The Island by Victoria Hislop. How much? Seven nights’ bed and breakfast at the St Nicolas Bay Resort Hotel and Villas costs from £940 per person and includes flights and transfers. To book: carrier.co.uk

Sardinia The Italian island of Sardinia always feels like it has that exclusive price tag, particularly as the opulent reputation of the Costa Smeralda resort and its designer shops precedes many travel conversations about the destination. However, there is so much more to the island than its star-studded northeastern coast. Citalia says there is an increase in demand from clients who are looking for more from their Sardinian experience than a fantastic beach during the day and sumptuous meals and fine wine in the evening. The operator offers a gastronomic break for foodie lovers who want to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in with some Italian cooking. The Hotel Su Gologone in northern Sardinia is a foodie’s delight where, twice a week, guests can learn to make various types of bread in the hotel’s ancient bread oven. Sicily Prestige Holidays has added to its Sicily programme for 2015. Marketing manager Nicky Shafe says: “We have expanded our offering in Sicily’s Baroque southeast in response to a great demand for the region, which contains a host of hidden gems. It’s the ideal place to escape the stresses of every-day life and includes great accommodation, stunning countryside views, unspoilt beaches and some of the island’s best food and wine. Prestige has introduced a number of small hotels in this region for summer 2015 and has already seen a 38% increase in business year on year. These include three agriturismo properties: La Corte del Sole, an authentic Sicilian farmhouse overlooking the Vendicari nature reserve. Hotel Borgo Pantano near Siracusa is also new and is a stylish and contemporary ‘baglio’ (farmhouse) with 32 rooms. The 13-room Artemisia near Ragusa has been added for 2015. The restored Sicilian farmhouse is in a quiet and rural location close to the historic UNESCO city of Ragusa. Another addition in the Baroque southeast is Palazzo Failla in Modica, a family owned and run property with just seven bedrooms. A popular new self-drive tour for 2015 is Prestige’s seven-night gastronomy experience which takes in Sicily’s unspoilt southwest coast. The tour also visits the ancient and majestic Greek temples of Agrigento

smaller islands
Let’s think small If your clients have done the big islands in the Mediterranean, and they are looking for a more authentic experience, then why don’t you suggest they seek out the smaller options?
T
he islands in the Mediterranean come in all shapes and sizes, with an immense variety of experiences for your clients to enjoy. A lot of the smaller islands in the Mediterranean, such as Skyros in Greece, offer visitors the chance to really have a taste of a completely different way of life, where visitors are invited to live like a Skyrian. Alternatively, the island of Comino in the Maltese archipelago, has only one hotel and is car-free and is the perfect destination for holidaymakers looking to embrace the great outdoors and turn their back on the digital world for a few days. Over the next few pages, we look at some of the smaller islands in the Mediterranean to help you sell the right holiday to your client who is looking for an alternative to the resorts of the larger neighbours.
Malta Malta and its sister islands of Gozo and Comino have been popular all-year-round holiday destinations with Brits for many years, and it’s easy to see why. While the islands offer the traditional sun, sea and sand escapes, you don’t have to scratch far below the surface to see that they have lots of attractions and activities to get involved in that make the destination a perfect holiday choice for holidaymakers of any age. The trade is really putting its faith in the destination. Jet2 introduced five new direct services to Malta last month, with flights
operating twice weekly from Manchester airport and once a week from Leeds Bradford, Glasgow, East Midlands and Newcastle airports. Ryanair started a twice-weekly service from East Midlands in April. Olympic Holidays says the increase in flights from airlines have allowed the operator to offer a wider selection of UK airports than ever before. Commercial director, Photis Lambrianides, says: "Making use of the growing number of scheduled services alongside charter flights, we are not tieing in our customers to the standard one and two-week package holiday durations. A three or four-night autumn break in Malta is a highly attractive proposition away from the main holiday season and the island provides an excellent cultural escape to the sun.” The Malta Tourist Authority said the islands had a record-breaking summer last year, and early indications are good for this year already. And the tourist office is hoping that hosting the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in November will help to show the world what a spectacular destination it is. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles and Camilla are due to attend the gathering as well so expect to see plenty of Malta in the headlines. With that in mind, here is a round-up of a top 10 of things to suggest your clients do – royal or not – during their stay on the islands.
Capital one Valletta, the fortified capital of Malta, is considered by many to be one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world, which is one of the reasons why it has been named European Capital of Culture 2018. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Valletta is an historian’s delight, packed full of a treasure trove of cobbled streets and centuries-old buildings that give visitors an insight into what life must have been like in the Maltese city years ago. Valletta was built by the Knights of St John (the Knights of Malta) after they nearly lost the islands to the Ottoman Turks in the Great Siege of 1565, so a sight that is top of the must-see bucket list is the Grand Master’s Palace, the former home of the Knights. Located in the heart of Valletta on Republic Street, the palace is filled with opulent paintings, tapestries and armoury from the islands’ history, and the building itself is a charming, architectural inspiration. The heart of Valletta is Republic Street, Triq ir-Repubblika, from where the city’s many sights, shops and side streets can be explored. The nearby St John’s Co-Cathedral is a shining example of Baroque architecture, with every inch of the building interiors covered in marble, gold and paint, and the walls adorned by exquisite tapestries by Rubens and Poussin and paintings by Caravaggio. cultural stick at, there are lots of shops to explore, interspersed with a cup of Maltese coffee or two at one of the city’s many coffee shops. By night, head down to the waterfront and dine al fresco on some Maltese traditional dishes and local wine, while you gaze in awe at the super yachts in the harbour. So, a perfect day trip during a summer holiday escape, Valletta also works well as a city break.
2. Marvellous Mdina Inhabited and fortified since the Bronze Age and was once the Roman centre of Malta, Mdina is a medieval walled town, which has barely changed in centuries. Perched on a hill, the town commands breath-taking views of the island, and meandering around the city’s labyrinth of streets is like taking a step back in history where visitors are surrounded by sublime medieval and baroque architecture, religious sights and quaint cafés and restaurants.
3. Not one, but Three Cities Mention Malta, and images of colourfully painted boats in the Grand Harbour often spring to mind, and hopping on board one of these quaint little boasts is often the best way to explore the three harbour towns of Vittoriosa (Birgu), Senglea (L-Isla) and Cospicua (Bormla). A symbol of Malta’s military importance, from medieval times all the way through to World War II and more recently, the 1970s,
when the British navy had their ships based there. The best way to experience the magnitude of these fortresses is by hopping on a cruise around the harbour. Back on dry land, stroll along the quaint narrow streets of the Three Cities and along the newly restored Vittoriosa Waterfont to gain a deeper insight into Maltese history and its fascinating culture.
4. Temple run Located in the southwest of the island just 500 metres apart, the temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra were built between 3600BC and 2500BC, making them much older than Stonehenge. The site at Hagar Qim consists of a central building and the remains of at least two more structures. The building has multiple rooms, flooring, roofs, elaborate doorways, stone furniture and statues and are a mighty impressive sight to see. At Mnajdra, there are three temples next to each other, and again, like Hagar Qim have an intricate complex of rooms. The South Temple at Mnajdra is aligned in a manner that it marks the position of sunrise on the first day of each season.
5. A complex issue Built by the same masterminds that constructed the temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra between 3600BC and 2500BC, the Hypogeum is an extraordinary underground burial complex with numerous chambers cut into solid rock. Like the temples, the

celebrated landmarks, including the Fungus Rock and the Azure Window. Lovers of Game of Thrones will recognise the Azure Window
6. Life in the slow lane A stay in Malta isn’t complete without hopping on a ferry to visit sister island Gozo, described as a divers’ and outdoor lovers’ paradise. The island is much smaller and quainter, which means the pace of life is more laidback and reminiscent of times gone by. Expect to be wowed by its authentic charm, rural landscapes, stunning hidden beaches, picturesque harbours, traditional limestone farmhouses and array of indigenous industries showcased by the locals such as lace, honey, wine and cheese. While on the island, drop in to the main town of Victoria, also known by the locals as Rabat as it houses a fortress town known as the Citadel, which is the site of the island’s

smaller islands from scenes of the smash-hit HBO series that were filmed there. This area is perfect for snorkelling and diving, and the cliffs are etched with walking paths. No shrinking violet on the history front, Gozo also has the Ggantija Temples, the oldest freestanding structure in the world that actually predates the Pyramids of Egypt by some 1,000 years. This UNESCO World Heritage temple site offers a glimpse of a very complex and organised civilisation that lived on the islands some 3,600 years ago.
7. The smaller sister The smallest of the three islands, car-free Comino is well worth a visit to experience its breathtaking cliff landscapes and rocky coves, and of course, the Blue Lagoon, a natural inlet with clear, azure waters that provided the backdrop for Madonna’s 2002 movie Swept Away. The island only has one hotel so make sure you book ahead.
8. Diving the depths A haven from divers all over the world because of its crystal-clear waters which allow for spectacular levels of visibility, Malta packs a punch when it comes to diving credentials. These list goes on and on but just bear in mind that divers of whatever ability are welcome, and if they would like to have some bragging rights with their diving mates, then Malta is the place to head to. There’s literally hundreds of ship wrecks just off the coast for them to explore, including submarines, statues, World War II aircraft and vessels. Malta is also the last place on earth to catch a glimpse of the rare sea perch.
9. Lights, camera, action… Malta is like a living film set, with so many movie and TV producers choosing the islands to shoot there. The list of movies that have been filmed in Malta is impressive, and includes Captain Phillips, World War Z, The Da Vinci Code, Troy, Alexander, Pinnochio, Gladiator, The Count of Monte Christo… the list just goes on. And Hollywood power couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have recently shot scenes on Gozo for their new movie By the Sea. Hoping to uncover its own movie directors of the future, the island hosted its own film festival for the first time earlier this month, so watch this space for more details of the next movie event next year. In the mean time, why don’t you suggest

smaller islands italy ITALOPHILES looking to follow a road less travelled by Brits will be thrilled to hear about this gem of an island. Situated six miles off the Tuscan Coast, with a landscape rich in iron ore, Elba island was an industrial ironmining hub until just after World War II when a decision was make to reposition the island as a holiday destination. Roughly half the size of the Isle of Wight, Elba boasts year-round greenery, more than 150 beaches, an authentic Italian ambience due to the high volume of Italian holidaymakers and a fascinating history that the locals are really proud of. Napolean Bonparte was exiled to Elba in 1814 for nine months, and his legacy can be seen all over the island with commemorative plaques on imperial buildings and decorative souvenirs everywhere. A trip to his two homes on the island – Villa dei Mulini and Villa Napoleanica di San Martino – is a must, the latter of which has been restored and opened as a museum. Where shall I stay? Citalia recommends the newly refurbished Hotel Desiree in Spartaia Bay, which opened this spring. The hotel boasts 17 acres of private parkland and a gently shelving beach with crystal-clear water, which makes it a perfect setting for families. Following the refurbishment, the hotel now offers new family rooms which sleep up to five people. How much? Prices start at £815 per person for seven nights’ half-board and includes internal flights, resort transfers, and return international flights from Gatwick. The price is based on 9 September 2015 departures. citalia.com CLASSIC COLLECTION HOLIDAYS has added the Aeolian islands of Vulcano and Salina to its Italy programme for the very first time. As the name suggests, there’s lots of evidence of volcanic happenings on the island of Vulcano. The ancient Romans thought it to be the chimney of the fire god Vulcan's workshop, and today, the island has embraced its volcanic landscapes by encouraging visitors to bathe in its therapeutic mud baths and hot springs. The main attraction, however, remains the Fossa di Vulcano,
the steaming volcano that towers over the island's northeastern shores. In stark contrast to Vulcano, Salina has a lush, green landscape, despite being made up of six volcanoes, the last one of which erupted some 13,000 years ago. The island is home to more than 400 different types of plants, including the cultivation of grapes, olives and capers. Classic is featuring three properties in total, one on Vulcano and the other two on Salina. Where should I stay? Classic suggests experiencing the Capofaro Malvasia and Resort boutique hotel on Salina. How much? Prices lead in at £1,235 per person and include flights to Catania in Sicily and ferry to Salina. To book: classic-collection.co.uk Greece So we all know about the larger islands in Greece, such as Corfu, Crete, Zakinthos, Rhodes and Kos, and over recent years, the smaller islands in the Cyclades, including Mykonos, Paros, Naxos and Ios that have been the popular rites-of-passage experiences for backpackers from all of the world, have started to take a bit of the premium, package-holiday market. But what about the smaller islands that are just a stone’s throw from their sizeable neighbours that would make a great twin-centre experience and give your clients the chance to experience the more authentic side of Greece?
Paradise it most definitely is. Skopelos and Skiathos Fans of the hit movie Mamma Mia will be familiar with the islands of Skopelos and Skiathos as they provided the backdrop for a number of the scenes in the smash-hit film; in fact, lots of scenes were shot on Skopelos's Kastani Beach. Olympic Holidays commercial director Photis Lambrianides says Mamma Mia really put these two Greek islands in the holiday spotlight. “People who saw it were no doubt won over by the location scenes. They are typical of many Greek islands and a world away from busy resorts such as Faliraki on the larger island of Rhodes. “Skopelos is twice the size of neighbouring Skiathos, but much quieter, meaning the two islands pair up well in a twin-centre. With its flower-filled courtyards, pretty cobbled streets and hillsides covered in greenery that are well suited to walkers, the island paints a real picture. Lambrianides adds: “Skiathos has more than 60 beaches scattered around its attractive coastline and a cluster of resorts ranging from cosmopolitan Skiathos Town to picturesque Achliades and Kolios. Attractions include Kounistra and Evangelistra monasteries and the old port and fish market of Skiathos Town.”
Paxi and Antipaxi
Naxos and the Smaller Cyclades isles
Brits have been flocking to Corfu in the Ionian Sea for decades now, and it’s easy to see why. It’s stunning Venetian architecture, lush green landscapes, beautiful beaches and top-notch hotels draw the crowds, but if you are looking for something a little bit more laidback, then why not nip over to the little islands of Paxi and Antipaxi. Achingly stylish and sophisticated, the tiny island of Paxi, just located south of Corfu, welcomes the yachting crowd during the summer months who are sailing around the Ionian islands at their own pace. Visitors head to Paxi for its wonderful beaches, and hop over to the uninhabited islet of Antipaxi for some more beach time – think sandy beaches, and Caribbean-blue sea.
The largest of the Cyclades islands, Naxos is a key ingredient in the islandhopping Cycladic recipe that mixes well with Mykonos, Santorini, Paros and Ios. But if you want to stray off this welltrodden ferry route, then check out the four tiny islands just a stone's throw from Naxos. These are, in the order in which the ferry line stops at each: Iraklia, Schinoussa, Koufonissia and Donoussa. Iraklia is THE place to head to if you desire a taste of what Greece was like many years ago. There are only 115 inhabitants on the island, the majority of which work in fishing or agriculture. So if you want to spend long lazy days on empty beaches and quiet nights at the small cosy tavernas

where the waiters only speak a handful of English words, then Iraklia is the place for you. Like Iraklia, the hospitable and warm residents of Schinoussa make their money through agriculture and fishing which is just as well as the island is as remote as you can get in terms of the 21st century as there are no banks, petrol stations, buses or taxis. So if you love walking, then Schinoussa is the place for you. The island boasts 20 stunning beaches and a delightful selection of traditional restaurants. For more of the same remote experiences, Koufonissia’s white sandy seas unparalleled in the Cyclades, while Donoussa again is perfect for those who want nothing more than breathtaking views of the sea and some decent Greek grub in the evening. Athens and Agistri The Greek capital can get a bit overwhelming during the summer months, so when you have done the bucket list of sights, jump on a ferry and head to the very green, charming island of Agistri. Its thick forest of pine trees, pebbly beaches and blue-green crystal clear waters are sure to impress as will the selection of cool places to eat and drink in town. Don’t miss the chance to trek on over to the islet of Aponisos three miles away to enjoy the little tavern overlooking the dock.
Santorini and Anafi Think of an image of Greece, and the blue-domed white buildings of Santorini come to mind. This iconic volcanic island in the Cyclades has become the mustvisit destination in Greece over the last 20 years, with its spectacular sunsets and caldera vistas providing the backdrop for many a holiday snap. But for something a little different, hop on the ferry and head east for a couple of hours to the charming island of Anafi. Explore the island’s main town is of Hora; perched 260 metres above sea level, the view of the white-washed buildings of Hora as you come into the island is breathtaking.
