ELCOME TO the second edition of All About Southern and East Africa, full of useful information to help you sell safari holidays – an unforgettable experience that should be enjoyed at least once in a lifetime. 2 by 2 Holidays is delighted to once again be sponsoring this edition, which this year includes lots of information about weddings abroad to coincide with the royal wedding in April. We all know William proposed to Kate in the foothills of Mount Kenya, but did you know royalty has always loved Southern and East Africa? Queen Elizabeth was on safari in Kenya when she heard her father had died, and both William and Harry love to holiday in Cape Town and have been on safari in South Africa, Botswana and Kenya. Harry spent part of his gap year in the small mountain kingdom of Lesotho where he founded a charity to support HIV/AIDS orphans; and both brothers rode motorcycles more than 1,000 miles through South Africa (mainly off-road) for this charity. For a cost-effective luxury wedding that is truly different, Southern and East Africa do it in style. The choice of private wedding venues is extremely varied e.g. a romantic safari wedding, the beautiful winelands of Cape Town, the mighty Victoria Falls, or a relaxed Indian Ocean beach wedding. Each wedding is personalised and can be combined with special extras such as a star bed (ie sleeping under the stars), private bush massage for two,

romantic private dinner, a hot air balloon ride or an elephant back safari. The ceremony can also include traditional African singers. Residence requirements are minimal and wedding formalities very simple in the Commonwealth countries. We are also able to arrange wheelchair accessible weddings. After your safari, complete your honeymoon relaxing on a warm golden beach along the coast or combine with the turquoise coral island of Mauritius, historic Zanzibar or unspoilt Mozambique. As we specialise only in safari holidays, remember we are always happy to offer you personal advice in constructing that all-important wedding or honeymoon safari holiday for your special customer. We share your commitment to excellent customer service and hope you enjoy our lovely new website www.2by2holidays.co.uk which is full of inspirational itineraries, all of which are commissionable to you. a c i r f A h t u o S South Africa is hoping to build on its success of hosting the World Cup in a bid to attract more Britons this year. With majestic scenery, beautiful beaches, uber-chic cities and the big five to track down, it shouldn’t be too difficult for agents to bag bookings for the perfect holiday destination
T
HERE IS nothing like hosting a major sporting event to put a destination on the world stage and showcase its potential to millions of people in one hit. The FIFA World Cup presented such an opportunity to South Africa last year and the country’s tourism leaders grabbed the chance with both hands and showed the world what an amazing and diverse destination it is. As a result of the month-long tournament, tourist arrivals to South Africa for the first eight months of 2010 grew by 17.4% over the same period in 2009 to reach 5.3 million. The number of visitors from the UK increased by 3.7% on 2009 to 295,544. The tourist board is hoping to capitalise on South Africa’s World Cup profile by attracting more conventions and events. It plans to leverage events to build tourism, enhance the quality of the tourism experience and strengthen the country’s reputation
and brand. South Africa has set out a tourism strategy for 2015 that includes boosting visitor numbers to 13.5 million a year and UK agents can play a key role in increasing the number of Brits they send to South Africa and boost their commission earnings at the same time. The tourist board is holding a series of roadshows for agents this year and is encouraging agents to become South Africa experts by completing their online training programme at www.southafricaexpert.com, which could also lead to them winning a place on an educational this year. A new consumer campaign that includes TV, print, social media and cinema adverts is also planned. South Africa has variety in abundance when it comes to holiday options and it is difficult to know where to send clients, whether they are first-timers or repeat visitors.
Cape Town’s Victoria and Alfred Waterfront with views of Table Mountain

Cape Town is always a favourite twinned with a safari, but to help you get to grips with this vast country, here is a snapshot of South Africa’s top 10 must-sees.
If you are up to the challenge, you can follow some of the hiking routes up the mountain, but if you are a bit of an adrenaline junkie, try rock climbing on Table Mountain.
Cape Town: if it’s shopping, luxury hotels and nightlife your clients want, then Cape Town is the place to send them. The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, a regenerated harbour area, boasts a plethora of restaurants, bars, and shops. Some of Cape Town’s more upmarket hotels can be found here too, including Cape Grace and One&Only Cape Town. The area comes alive at night-time with all the restaurants and bars buzzing with people. Areas such as Camps Bay are also popular for dinner, and in particular for watching the sun set over the sea.
Robben Island: the world’s most famous prisoner Nelson Mandela was incarcerated in a five square metres cell in the prison on Robben Island for 27 years. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, you can do tours of the prison, and the guides are usually former inmates. Robben island is hugely popular, and you usually have to book at least three days in advance. So, always tell your customers to either book a tour with you, or book the trip as soon as they get to Cape Town.
Table Mountain: rising 1,000 metres above the city, the peak of Table Mountain takes a couple of minutes to get to the the top, and costs about £10 for the return journey. The car does a 360 degree rotation during its climb, so you get views to all sides. The general rule of thumb with the mountain, is that if you can see the mountain, then it is fine to go up it; cloud, referred to as the Table Cloth, can close in on the mountain forcing the Cable Car to shut down.
A
WINDOW
TO
THE
Cape Peninsula: a drive down the Cape Peninsula is another popular day trip. This can be done as an escorted tour, or you can hire a car and go at your own pace. Leaving the centre of Cape Town, you will travel through some of the most upmarket parts of Cape Town, Clifton and Camps Bay. On an escorted tour, you will stop in Hout Bay, where you can take an optional trip out to the seal colony here. After that, you move south towards Cape Point, which has a national park and great beaches. On the way back to Cape Town stop just outside Simonstown at Boulders beach to visit the colony of African penguins.

The winelands route: another popular day trip from Cape Town is to the wineland areas of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, which is a 45-minute drive from Cape Town. Advise people who may be tempted to drive out here to take an organised tour, unless the driver is a confirmed tee totaller. South Africa produces some world-class wines, and a day trip will let you sample a large variety of those on offer. If you find a wine you particularly like, then the winery will be more than happy to ship wine to you, or tell you where in the UK you can find their wines. Many visitors also stay in the winelands for a couple of nights. Stellenbosch, which is the second oldest town in South Africa is also home to a university, and so has a well-developed café culture, and bar scene. Franschhoek holds to its French roots, and is now the gourmet capital of South Africa.
On track for 2011 THE BLUE Train is operating two new journeys this year, combining the luxury rail experience with a break in KwaZulu-Natal or a safari in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve. The first four-night package, Zimbali Resort Breakaway, is available on two dates – 8-12th September and 17-21 November – and includes a return overnight journey on the Blue Train, two nights at Fairmont Zimbali Lodge, two rounds of golf at the Zimbali Golf Estate or a voucher to use at one of Zimbali’s spas. Prices lead in at £1,267 per person sharing a deluxe suite. Due to popular demand, the Blue Train is offering its four-day Ivory Tree Lodge Safari, escape in style once again, between 15 and 18 September and 29 December and 1 January. This trip includes one overnight forward and one return day trip’s accommodation on the Blue Train, plus two nights’ accommodation at the five-star Ivory Tree Game Lodge in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve. The package also includes four guided game drives, spa treatments, a welcome drink at Sun City halt, and road transfers to the Lodge. Prices start at £1,123 per person based on two sharing.
South Africa Whale-watching: a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town lies the town of Hermanus, a popular spot for whale watching. The season runs from May to November, but is at its best from June to October. Hermanus is particularly well known for it’s land-based whale watching. The southern right whales come in very close to shore. You can also go on on whale-watching cruises, or if you have the money, you can whale watch from a plane. The Garden Route: when it comes to self-drive or organised tours, visitors to South Africa are spoilt for choice. However, there is one that wins hands down in the popularity stakes - the Garden Route. The drive starts off in Cape Town, finishing 470 miles later at the Eastern Cape city of Port Elizabeth. If you want to just take in some beautiful scenery, enjoy great food and drink, and relax, then the Garden Route is perfect for you. However, if you have a thirst for adventure, the Garden Route has plenty to offer. Hiking, biking trails are aplenty and the world’s highest commercial bungee jump just outside of Plettenberg Bay. There are many notable stopoffs, including the Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn, the golf courses of George are a must for the keen golfer; a treetop canopy tour in Tsitsikamma Forest; the Swartberg Mountains; whale and dolphin cruises from Plettenberg bay
The Blue Train will be going on safari in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve

and Knysna. The Garden Route experience ends in Port Elizabeth where you can take a break from driving and enjoy the Eastern Cape beaches or head out to the malaria-free game reserves. Durban: dubbed South Africa’s sunshine city, Durban is the perfect combination of beautiful, safe-forswimming beaches, cosmopolitan life and safari. The beaches are Durban’s big selling point, particularly popular with surfers, but if you fancy something more sedate, sundowner cruises and fishing charters are the laidback alternative. The city is full of urban offerings as well with everything from markets to shopping malls, restaurants, bars and clubs to uShaka Marine World and Water World. Township tours, game reserves, the

Drakensberg mountains, the Battlefields, the Wild Coast and Zululand are all easily accessible. The Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve: lovers of the great outdoors will be drawn to the Blyde River Canyon in Mpumalanga. Great for hiking, abseiling, swimming and bird and animal watching, this reserve also has some spectacular viewing points - from God’s Window you can see as far as Kruger Park and Mozambique on a clear day. Tours take in other natural attractions such as Bourke’s Luck Potholes where 19th-century prospectors searched for gold, the Blyde River Canyon Hiking Trail, God’s Window, 3 Rondawels, The Pinnacle, visitor’s centre and the Blyde River Dam. Kruger National Park: it doesn’t need any introduction. Kruger is perhaps the most famous game reserve in the world, with two million hectares packed full of wildlife, unique landscapes, historical and archaeological sights. Established in 1898, today Kruger is home to a massive variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and trees, as well as heritage sights such as the bushman’s rock paintings, the Masorini village and Thulamela hill which date back hundreds of years. ■

Thinking of getting married abroad - say ‘I do’ in South Africa SOUTH AFRICA has carved out a fabulous reputation as a destination for romantics. Many anxious husbands-to-be – even royal ones – organise a holiday to Southern or East Africa around a proposal for their loved ones. Stunning sun sets in the bush, amazing beaches and mighty mountains are guaranteed to bring out the romance in the most die-hard non-romantics. And what also gives South Africa an edge over other destinations is the fact the diamonds which will form the centrepiece of that allimportant ring are much more affordable and of a better quality in South Africa – and they also get the ring designed and made while they are there. South Africa is a popular destination with honeymooners, combining a few days in Cape Town, a relaxing time on the beach and an exhilarating adventure on safari. Have you ever thought of suggesting to clients considering a honeymoon there, they have their wedding there too? Holidays in South Africa are a costeffective alternative to getting married in the UK where couples think nothing of spending £20,000 on their big day. While the Caribbean has always been a favourite of Brits planning to walk down the aisle, South Africa is starting to register on people’s radars as a great alternative. There are so many places to say ‘I do’ in South Africa from a romantic safari setting to the winelands of Cape Town, Victoria Falls, or barefoot on the beach. Wedding co-ordinators are on hand to make sure every wedding is special and can suggest some fabulous extras, such as hot-
12
air balloon rides or an elephant back safari. So let’s have a look at some of the places that pull out all the stops to make couples’ day memorable for all the right reasons.
In the bush Shamwari Just an hour’s drive from Port Elizabeth, the malaria-free Shamwari game reserve promises bush breakfasts, dinners under the stars and game drives in open safari vehicles. Samara At the foot of the Sneeuberg mountains, on the edge of the Plains of Camdeboo in the Great Karoo in Eastern Cape, there is plenty here to inspire lovers. The lodge has three cottages with a number of suites to accommodate a wedding party. The reserve suggests a number of ways for couples to enjoy their day either by: having an early-morning wedding ceremony at Karoo Lodge or Manor House, followed by breakfast and a game drive; a mid-morning ceremony and brunch on the mountain top overlooking Plains of Camdeboo followed by a sundowner game drive; or a late afternoon wedding ceremony at Karoo Lodge or Manor House and dinner on the verandah, poolside or a boma braai under the stars.
Makanyane Safari Lodge Makanyane Safari Lodge caters for wedding parties from two up to 16 people. The lodge suggests a four-day wedding stay, including several game drives and walks, beauty treatments for the wedding couple and a ceremony against the backdrop of a sunset across the reserve, followed by a four-course supper. The wedding package includes: a minister to perform the ceremony; flowers for the ceremony; photographer: wedding cake; beauty treatments; two game drives; and game walks.

2BY2 HOLIDAYS is starting the new year as it means to go on with a fresh new look to its branding and its website. 2by2 Holidays owner Claire Farley said the website was well overdue for a redesign: “When we founded our business eight years ago, we only sold South Africa. Since then, we have expanded and now sell all of Southern and East Africa, as well as Madagascar and the Indian Ocean Islands. Our old website was designed in the very early days of the internet, so it had poor navigation by today’s standards. “We have also used the opportunity to introduce many more inspirational pictures and showcase the many specialist holidays we offer such as weddings and holidays, volunteer holidays, photography safaris, bird-watching safaris and camping safaris. The operator has also introduced more holidays for disabled travellers. All about Southern & East Africa

It is easily accessible from Port Elizabeth with domestic flights into the city’s airport; alternatively, it is an eight-hour drive from Cape Town, along the Garden Route What can I do there? It a malaria-free province so its game reserves are popular with families. There are at least 20 game reserves and four national parks. About an hour’s drive from Port Elizabeth, the Greater Addo Elephant Park is home to 300 elephants, as well as black rhinos, Cape buffalos, lions, zebras and the dung bettle, exclusive to Addo. Other activities for families include the rock pools at Middle Beach in Kenton, Jeffreys Bay Shell Museum – home to the largest collection of seashells in South Africa – the beach at Cape St Francis, and fishing on the Kromme River. What is this about adventure? At 216 metres high, the park boasts the highest bungee jump in the region and there is also the famous tree-top canopy tours, white-water rafting and hiking trails. Anything for culture vultures? The Eastern Cape is the traditional home of the Xhosa people and there are a number of tours that celebrate the heritage of the region. the rugged beaches of the Wild Coast and the surfers’ paradise of Jeffrey’s Bay. Kwandwe Private Game Reserve &Beyond has launched a new winter safari programme for guests visiting the Great Fish River Lodge at &Beyond Kwandwe Private Game Reserve. Winter mornings and evenings in the region can bechilly by African standards, so &Beyond has created a winter safari suit to keep guests warm. Head to Botswana for wide-open plains and a wide choice of safaris with a luxury edge
O
NE OF Botswana’s key selling points is its expansive game parks and preserves that guarantee an abundance of diverse wildlife but at the same time the destination is relatively underdeveloped and untouched. Some 70% of this landlocked southern African country is covered by the Kalahari desert and one of Southern Africa’s longest rivers, the Okavango flows into Botswana from the northwest and fans out into a wetland called the Okavango Delta, which covers 9,375 square miles and seeps into the desert. One third of the Okavango Delta, which is the largest inland river delta in the world, is covered by the Moremi Game Reserve. The Delta is fed by the Okavango River that begins in the Angolan highlands and fans out to form a mass of swamps, reed beds, streams, flood plains, islands, and long stretches of cool, clear water. by ‘mokoro’, a traditional dugout canoe, is a popular tourist activity. The safari product in Botswana is very high end and there are a number of safari options to choose from – fly-ins, mobile and guided – and many of the lodges have big plans for this year. Desert & Delta Safaris has launched a mobile safari product based on exploring the national parks of Botswana. Accommodation and overnights are in Desert and Delta Safaris camps and lodges as opposed to doing this type of safari on the classical camping safari basis. Each departure is led by a safari guide and allows for travellers to enjoy the benefit of private activities within their own specially modified vehicle. There are eight departure dates this year and each departure will operate with a minimum of two and maximum of six.

With visitor numbers increasing year on year and a new website to help agents promote the destination, the future looks bright for Namibia
B
ETWEEN 2005 and 2009, Namibia has seen a whopping 33.6% increase in visitor numbers from the UK. In 2005, the number of UK tourists that visited the southern African country was 20,978, but by 2009, this number had reached 28,039. From its richly coloured, sculpted sand dunes and desert plains teeming with wildlife to forest savannahs, rugged mountains and the Skeleton Coast, Namibia offers variety in abundance when it comes to spectacular landscapes. Namibia has 17 national parks and game reserves within 14 different vegetation zones for visitors to choose
from and the fact it is a very accessible country makes it even more appealing. The Namibia Tourism Board is pulling out all the stops to get the message out about its spectacular country by launching a new website with details and features of the top visitor attractions, activities, community-based tourism aspects and an interactive planning map. So what is happening in Namibia this year? Naturally Namibia launched last year offering the UK travel industry improved access to Namibia’s owner-run properties, safari families and specialist guides in Namibia that offer self-drive and pilot guided safaris to see the best of this diverse country. Lamu Island: a wonderful secluded and tranquil escape from the modern world, board a Tamarind or Tusitiri dhow and set sail along the northern shore of the Indian Ocean to explore the Lamu archipelago. Lake Victoria: the shores of Lake Victoria, the second largest fresh-water lake in the world and the source of the river Nile, provides a serene setting. The lake is dotted with small enchanting islands including Rusinga Island and Mfangano Island, ideal for romantic getaways. Into the wild Lewa Wildlife Conservancy: a location fit for a future king to propose to his girlfriend. Prince William and Kate Middleton stayed in an open-air Maasai lodge called Il Ngwesi, from where William hired a helicopter to take them to a remote lake in the Lewa Conservancy on the slopes of Mount Kenya. Located to the northwest of the conservancy is Lewa Safari Camp, a tented camp which offers a range of activities to occupy visitors such as day and night game drives, horse and camel rides, bird watching, walks, picnics and sundowners, fly-fishing and a unique opportunity to interact and learn about the local Maasai culture. Amboseli National Park: Kilimanjaro’s Royal Court includes amazing views of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa and second highest in the world. Maasai Mara Game Reserve: the seventh new wonder of the world, a great place to discover your romantic side as the sun sets. Meru National Park: referred to as the “Complete Wilderness”, with a fantastic romantic spot at Elsa’s rock – a perfect place to pop the question. Laikipia: trace Hemingway’s footsteps and experience his inspiration for Green Hills of Africa. The sky beds in Laikipia are also ‘a must’ for romantics. Samburu: home to its ‘own big five’ – Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk and Beisa Oryx – definitely a place to discover your inner Romeo.

OUBLE THE size of its neighbour Kenya, Tanzania is a must-visit destination for lovers of wildlife and the great outdoors. From the northern game areas of the Serengeti and the NgoroNgoro Crater to the remote wilderness of Selous, Ruaha and Tarangira parks in the south, visitors are spoilt for choice when it comes to game-viewing opportunities. The famous annual migration starts in Tanzania where millions of plains’ game move along a circular route northwards from the Serengeti into the Maasai Mara in Kenya which they reach in June and July and back again, followed by hordes of predators. While the migration is a big draw for most visitors, the country also has a fantastic coastline with world-class reefs, great diving, snorkelling and stunning beaches. Many of the hotels along the coast offer diving courses
but there is also the temptation to visit the islands of Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia just off the coast. Here is a snapshot of what’s happening in Tanzania for 2011. The Selous Safari Camp in the Selous Game Reserve has introduced a bush walking safari package that is available to guests staying in the main camp for more than two nights. A bush walking safari allows safari enthusiasts to get closer to hippos, elephants, impala and giraffe at grassroots level. The trip starts with a cruise across Lake Nzerakera to the satellite camp site, where guests will find their accommodation in canvas tents. Meals are served communally in the open air. Accompanied by an expert guide, the emphasis of the walking safaris is on ecology, tracking, dung identification, medicinal uses of trees, birding and many other aspects of the bush often neglected when driving in a vehicle. The Selous Safari Camp is situated on the shores of Lake Nzerakera, a large
lake that adjoins the Rufiji river in the Selous Game Reserve. It comprises 13 en suite tents on raised platforms. The bush walking safari is available for a maximum of six adults and must be booked in advance. Singita Grumeti Reserves in northern Tanzania is launching a mobile tented safari experience called Singita Explore that aims to recreate the romance of a bygone era to provide guests with an authentic safari experience. Guests staying at one of Singita Grumeti’s three lodges; Sasakwa, Faru Faru, or Sabora Tented Camp will be offered the chance to add on the mobile safari experience. Remote parts of the Singita Grumeti Reserve have been identified to offer guests a true wilderness experience and there are no set camp sites. The best location is selected in terms of game viewing and scenery for the time of the year and the reserve guarantees complete exclusivity. Each of the mobile

Zambia This land-locked Southern African nation has built its reputation on its water features – think Victoria Falls and the Zambezi river. Zambia has 17 waterfalls in total, so cascade tours are popular with visitors as well as negotiating the Zambezi in a variety of ways, either by white-water rafting, canoeing, river boarding, kayaking or abesiling. Wildlife lovers are spoilt for choice too with plenty of safari tours available. Sanctuary Retreats has just launched a back to basics safari. The Sanctuary Zebra Plains offers enthusiasts the ultimate bush adventure by foot, retracing the steps of David Attenborough’s documentary Life exploring the unspoiled wilderness of the South Luangwa, home to large populations of zebra, elephant, hippo, buffalo, crocodile and puku, as well as more than 400 bird species. Zanzibar Also known as the Spice Island, Zanzibar and the neighbouring islands of Pemba are just off the coast of Tanzania and are popular twin-centre for people who have been on a safari in the Serengeti and want to enjoy some well-deserved R&R afterwards. A new holistic health resort has just opened on Zanzibar.
