Brits play it safe for the summer holiday NEARLY TWO-thirds (57%) of Brits would only try a new holiday destination if the location came recommended by a friend, according to a new study commissioned by Hilton HHonors, the loyalty programme for Hilton Worldwide’s ten brands. Hilton HHonors has partnered with travel expert Ben Fogle and will be motivating UK travellers to try new holiday experiences during The Great Getaway sale, which offers up to 40% off stays completed between now and September 30, at any of the participating hotels within the Hilton Worldwide portfolio. The study was conducted on travel trends to uncover British holiday habits and research revealed several notable results, including: ● Getaway and show off: while many aren’t quick to try somewhere new, more than 60% of respondents show off past holidays to friends and family to encourage others to experience the destination. ● Wish you were here: a quarter of Brits admit to texting and emailing people when on holiday to share their experience. ● Rain, rain, go away: more than half (61%) of the survey respondents are influenced by the weather when planning their next holiday. ● Take me away: more than 60% of Brits only feel like they are really “getting away from it all” when in a different environment. ● Tag me: almost three-quarters (71%) of 16-24 year-olds in the UK share all their holiday news via Facebook. Fogle said: “The research shows that most Brits need a complete change of scenery to feel that they are ‘getting away from it all’, so it’s really important for everyone to get out there and try new things. I always encourage people to experiment while on holiday by taking part in a new activity or even just trying a different cuisine. If a change is as good as a break, why not do both?” Agents looking to save their clients' money by booking through The Great Getaway have until July 23 to make a booking. Survey reveals baggage allowance & budgeting are top worries for Brits NEW RESEARCH from Asda Travel Money has found that many Brits resort to panic packing before going away as the worries over last minute preparations and making sure they’ve packed everything take over. Almost three quarters (73%) of people only start preparing and packing a few days before they set off, with one in ten (12%) leaving it until the day before. While people may leave packing until the last minute, it doesn’t stop them worrying about all those essential holiday preparations. Trying not to over pack causes the biggest panic with almost half of holidaymakers (46%) stating that staying within weight limits is their biggest fear especially with the exorbitant luggage charges from budget airlines and a fifth of people (18%) worry about buying their travel money in advance. VIRGIN ATLANTIC has announced it will withdraw operations between London and Nairobi on September 23. Increasing costs and a challenging economic environment in both Kenya and Europe have, during the past five years, contributed to the decision to withdraw the service. PLANET HOLIDAYS and Weddings has moved its offices from New Barnet to Welwyn in Hertfordshire. For details call 0871-871 2234 or visit www.planet-holidays.co.uk JOHN LEWIS and Kuoni have announced a new partnership which will see the travel company open new travel concessions in four of the retailer’s shops in autumn. Locations include Oxford Street, Reading, Southampton and Cardiff. THE OPENING of Berlin's new airport has been put back from June until March next year, because its fire safety system is not ready. Berlin Brandenburg airport cost 2.5billion euros (£2billion) to build. WIZZ AIR has announced a new three times weekly route to Ljubljana in Slovenia from Luton which commences in October. Fares are available from £23.99 one-way, including taxes. For details see www.wizzair.com
Olympic answers Greece questions OLYMPIC HOLIDAYS has posted answers to frequently asked questions on its Website, in an effort to reassure agents and travellers that Greece is a good holiday choice this summer. The operator does not expect Greece to leave the Euro – at least not this summer – but says it is prepared for whatever happens. The company's commercial director, Photis Lambrianides, said: “The politicians’ failure to form a government has created further uncertainty, particularly about whether or not Greece will stay in the euro. “All arrangements with our main partners are in readiness, should this situation develop. For instance, our hotel and other ground contracts would be converted to drachmas. “Right now, Greece represents the best-ever value, with hoteliers bending over backwards to keep the tourism industry going, and the holiday pound worth up to 25% more in resort. “Even if Greece leaves the Euro, it will not happen overnight and there would be a transition period during which both currencies would be in circulation. Throughout the Greek islands, local hoteliers, barowners and everyone in the tourism industry would continue to do what they do so well: welcome holidaymakers with open arms.” The Greek FAQS are in the Travel Update section of the operator’s Website, and answers questions including: Should I wait until things quieten down?, What happens if the currency changes from euro to drachma? and Is local transport affected? newsbulletin AW rolls out inflight sales with TC IN-FLIGHT SALES of Attraction World products are now live with Thomas Cook Airlines in mainland Spain, Portugal and Turkey, with more destinations set to follow. The in-flight sales technology that ties in with the onboard retail systems took six months to pull together with Alpha Flight Group who manage the in-flight retail for Thomas Cook Airlines. It means that passengers on board certain flights can book tickets to key parks and attractions and take advantage of the benefits of prebooking. The operator sees this as another channel for capturing sales but is keen to remind agents that they have first access to the customers and the first chance to make the booking. The company's national sales manager, Nick Hughes, said: “Take Siam Park as an example – only 9% of ticket sales from the UK are pre-booked. This means 91% fly without pre-buying and this new development is simply a way of mopping up missed opportunities. There are so many benefits of buying tickets in advance - customers can enter the park using their smart phone, queue jump with their e-ticket which in peak season can save lots of valuable time and they can go any day they want whilst away so hugely flexible and there are no paper tickets to lose! I cannot encourage agents enough to do all they can to capture some of the market.” For more information visit www.attractionworld.com or call 0871-700 8888.

newsbulletin SKÅL THE VER WORLD O Members of Skål - the International Association of Travel and Tourism Professionals - share their travel experiences and success stories from around the globe. This month, the voice of a Skålleague comes from ANDREW J. WOOD, president of Skål International Thailand I HAVE been a member of Skål International for 18-plus years and during all of that time I have found that the opportunities for networking and forming global friendships have been second to none. This includes my regular attendance at trade shows, both overseas and in Thailand, PATA events, Chamber of Commerce meetings and private industry functions. I have lived in Bangkok for 21 years, working at a senior level in the industry. Unlike in the movies, if i wanted a free drink I didn’t need to gatecrash a party. These legitimate invitations to official functions helped broaden my professional network in the early days. My membership in Skål International stands head and shoulders above the rest of my professional memberships. It has helped in my ability to aim higher than my peer group could ever do. As an example, when visiting Tokyo on business for the first time, I was met and welcomed by the publisher of Travel Journal magazine, Imai-san, on a Sunday. He drove me around for a personal tour of Tokyo and its sights, followed by dinner. The next day I was invited to join the Skål lunch of the Tokyo club and I was introduced to the presidents of JAL; ANA; JTB; KNT; etc. This would never have happened if I went to visit them on a sales call! I often refer to the affordable red carpet experience when I talk about my Skål International membership. For instance attendance at the Skål World Congress, which takes place in the fall of each year, is very affordable. Five nights' five-star accommodation, including all meals, drinks, a welcome party, gala dinner, events, tours etc. for approx US$1,000 all included! I heard quite recently that potential employers and placement companies advise candidates not to mention Skål International on their resumés. Why should they be embarrassed to belong to the world's oldest tourism association with 19,000 senior travel and tourism professionals? I would argue that Skål is just as relevant as it always was. Sure the industry has changed and will continue to do so. You only have to speak to travel agents and owners of travel magazines and you will get a nod of agreement. But are there better alternatives than what Skål offers? None that I know of. What would I consider the most important motive behind my Skål membership? Being able to travel anywhere in the world and have a friend to say hello, show you the ropes and make you feel you are welcome! SKÅL!

W-AITO-Go! by OLIVER BROAD
Why working together as a team makes surviving the difficult times easier to tackle S PART of the AITO All Stars incentive scheme, a small group of the top performing AITO Agents have recently been treated to a very special fam trip in conjunction with ITC Classics and Complete Caribbean. It was a particularly exciting trip as not only did we get to see a range of properties in Barbados, but we also flew out to Mustique and stayed for two nights at the Cotton House. As soon as we touched down on this beautiful, exclusive island, we could all tell there was something special about it. The island was made famous by its royal resident, Princess Margaret, and it’s easy to see why she fell in love with it. Today, the landscape is adorned with private villas owned by the rich and famous. Dramatic coastlines, friendly locals, privacy difficult to find in today’s modern world and a climate many islands would be jealous of, mean that Mustique truly does seem to have it all. The island was somewhere I could never imagine being able to afford to visit on my own holidays, so we all felt privileged to get an insight into this world so far removed from our own. It was also an invaluable opportunity to find out more about this high-end, luxury destination we are all lucky enough to sell. Staying in a place as opposed to just visiting for a few hours really does make a difference, as I am sure you will agree. The Mustique Company has strict rules in place with regards to building regulations and so you won’t find any built-up areas on the island, just high villas dotted around – including those belonging to stars such as Mick Jagger and Tommy Hilfiger. Transport is by car or, more commonly, Kawasaki ‘Mules’ – large golf buggies which provide a much more interesting ride. With no pollution it is easy to feel the affects of the sun on the island, and whilst it previously suffered problems with mosquitos, they are now no more prevalent here than on any of the neighbouring islands. While in Mustique, our group got together one evening to discuss industry issues that were affecting us all; these ranged from discounting and service fees to non-bonded agents. It was a reminder that taking yourself outside of the workplace can be of real value when it comes to standing back from your business and reviewing the current climate more objectively. Of course there were differing opinions on all subjects but the commonality was that we were all AITO Agents, and I for one was keen to ensure everyone present understood the importance of

coming together and working on issues as a team to help us survive these difficult times. Indeed I look forward to debating the topics further at our conference in Madeira in a few weeks. Meanwhile, in Barbados we stayed at the Coral Reef, Colony Club and Cobblers Cove, and also visited Sandy Lane, Sandpiper, Crystal Cove, Tuckers Point, Jolly Beach and The House. Each with their own style and market it was good to see a range of properties for differing budgets. Having not visited Barbados since I was 14 I was pleasantly surprised, and I can completely see why so many clients choose to repeat visit. The welcome we received was warm and hospitable, and at no point during the stay did I feel unsafe. You certainly got the feeling that locals were pleased you had chosen their island to visit. It was great to be able to share the trip with a group who had done so well in the AITO All Stars incentive scheme. It gave us the opportunity to chat about AITO, and there were some great ideas suggested during the trip. To me, this is what AITO is all about. Whilst our agents are spread all across the UK, when we come together we share a lot of common ground. We are faced with the same concerns and have to tackle the same problems, so in the spirit of AITO we can pull together and work through them. I now look forward to exploring more of the Caribbean, if anyone’s offering?! AITO Specialist Travel Agents regularly runs FAM trips in association with AITO operator members. brra ain insstto orrm mb bu b ulllle ettin in THIS WEEK, Ian Bates from Worldchoice Travel in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, asked for your feedback on the following...
One of the bug-bears in our office is that when we call certain operators we are often connected to a call centre abroad. The other day my colleague had to speak to three different people at the call centre before someone could understand what she was saying! I think if you are going to employ people in call centres they really need to know how to speak English to a high level. Do other agents feel the same and do they have any tips on how to deal with being understood? Here's what some of you thought... STRANGELY ENOUGH I had an email on this just the other week and the very straight forward answer is that you ask where they are speaking from and then ask to be put through to a UK based office. If they offer to let you speak to their supervisor, politely refuse and ask again to be put through to a UK based office. Apparently it is within your rights to do this. I have tried this and it does work.
WE REFUSE to deal with some companies for this reason and also because when you have a problem it is a nightmare. I once spent hours trying to get the Virgin Holidays call centre to help me with a serious problem but just received abuse and was told it was all my fault. When I finally managed to speak to someone in the UK the problem was sorted out in minutes. I don’t stress easily but after that experience I decided life was too short. To avoid repeating the experience we simply stopped using Virgin Holidays. I am not sure if they have changed this system as I have never ever braved up to ring them again but we tend mainly to deal with the UK-based companies. In reality if you decide to run a call centre abroad you are insulting UK workers and residents but readily accept their money. Ironically some bosses of UK companies that have followed this procedure have won services to Britain awards or worse still Knighthoods. I seem to see a trend of insurance companies returning to the UK as it has obviously met resistance and if it is going to happen in travel the best way to speed this up is for UK agents to switch sell the problem companies. TREVOR BONES, SOUTHERN CROSS TRAVEL, EAST SUSSEX
CHERYL SHADWELL, KWIK TRAVEL LTD, TAMWORTH
MY VIEW on this is that I won't deal with operators who have overseas call centres. For example, I never do any bookings with Virgin any more. I found that I could never make myself understood and every question I asked they always said yes or would put me on hold for ages and then come back with an answer that wasn't relevant to the question. It was infuriating! So, they lost my business and I haven't used them for over a year. MICHELLE STAMMERS, THE CO-OPERATIVE PERSONAL TRAVEL ADVISOR, SUTTON COLDFIELD

STAR RESPONSE
WINS a £10 op v Lo e2Sher h vouc
I HAVE had this experience plenty of times. I now ask to speak to John or Robert and this usually puts them in a spin. This then usually results in getting put sraight through to someone that speaks English and understands English. I also hate the idea that we have to ring expensive lines so I now use this Website which not only gives you alternative numbers to call which are normal standard rates but also saves the company you work for probably thousands in calls each year. Why, oh why, do companies that we give our business to try and rip us off with expensive telephone numbers to call after we have given them our business? THE NEXT BRAINSTORM QUESTION IS: How do other agents close the sale while their potential client is in the shop so that they don’t lose the customer to the internet? Please send your responses to lauretta.wright@travelbulletin.co.uk with the subject 'Brainstorm'. The star response wins a £10 Love2Shop voucher.

Agents can offer clients booking the complete 27-day Cape Town to Dakar trip a 25% discount, and 20% to those booking sectors from Cape Town to Accra (18 days) or Accra to Dakar (12 days) for all bookings made before June 30. The company's general manager, Michael Edwards, said: “We’re known for trailblazing new destinations and not only will we attract a new audience of first-time cruisers to the region, but it’s also great to offer exciting new destinations to our loyal expedition guests. “Although agents will be familiar with our successful Arctic and Antarctic programmes they may be unfamiliar with this area of the world. THIS SUMMER Frégate Island Private in the Seychelles is running a pirate treasure hunt for families to find the Royal Portuguese Golden Cross. According to legend, the ruthless French pirate La Buse stole the Royal Portuguese Golden Cross as it journeyed from India to Portugal, before burying it on Frégate – then a wild, jungle-covered hideaway for buccaneering brigands. While there is no X to mark the spot, the Seychelles National Archives are home to a mysterious scroll purporting to be the last will and testament of La Buse, which the pirate is said to have thrown from the gallows with his last words, “Find it for me!” In between scouring the winding jungle trails, counting out steps along the seven beaches and snorkelling, families can take part in an actionpacked summer holiday programme including activities such as building and racing rafts, competing in sand-castle competitions; experiencing an authentic Seychellois fishing trip; race crabs; and try their hands at sailing or scuba diving. Scott Dunn is offering seven-night family holidays at the property from £21,920 for a family of four. The price includes seven nights' villa accommodation for the price of six, for two adults and two children under 11 years sharing on a full board basis; two hours’ babysitting per day; flights from Heathrow with Emirates; helicopter transfers; taxes and services. For more information or to book visit www.scottdunn.com or call 020-8682 5020.
