Career pathways key to help travel businesses in their recovery PARLIAMENTARY UNDER Secretary of State for Transport, Norman Baker MP, has launched new research showing that travel services employers need to work closely with colleges to promote the range of roles available and to ensure that students get the skills they need to work in the industry. People 1st’s State of the Nation research report surveyed more than 1,400 employers from across the passenger transport and travel sector, including more than 350 employers in the travel services industry, and revealed that promoting the broad range of roles available and how these can lead to a long-term career is important in attracting the ‘right’ people into the industry. The company's chief executive Brian Wisdom says that one way to do this is for employers to have a strong influence on college training programmes. He said: “There are plenty of travel programmes available for people wanting to join the industry, but our research has highlighted the need for all colleges to promote the full breadth of careers available in the travel services industry. “This will help employers find the staff that they need and, if the employers are fully engaged in the development of the course content, the colleges are also going to be able to give the learners the skills they will need in the workplace.” The report also found that the sector needs to ensure its workforce has the right skills to continue to meet challenges around changing customer spending patterns, rising customer expectations and
the rising influence of technology on the industry. Wisdom said: “The sector has been through many changes in recent years, with the economic downturn resulting in a lot of consolidation and a decreasing workforce, although this looks like it has settled and 36% of businesses are once again expecting their workforce to increase in the next three to five years. “The slow economy and a rapid increase in online travel bookings have forced businesses to adapt, for example, by providing operating both online and High Street stores. However, to maintain their competitiveness, employers need to ensure staff have the skills they need. The industry faces a big challenge when it comes to offering flexible and effective online systems while maintaining high levels of customer service. Staff need multiple skills to do this and must be able to combine technical capabilities with great customer service.” Other findings from the report include a growth in the travel services industry of 38% last year, which contributed £6.24billion to the UK economy; workforce numbers decreased 17% from 2011, but 36% of employers expect staffing levels to increase; the number of travel services businesses increased by 2% in the past 12 months; and 46% of employers in the travel services industry said they arranged, funded or provided training for their staff last year. The full research and statistics are available online at www.people1st.co.uk/sotnptt2013

Third of Brits will pay for holiday through debt this year NEW RESEARCH from www.vouchercodespro.co.uk, which polled 1,390 adults, suggests that a third of Brits will be getting themselves into debt to pay for their holiday this year. Of those respondents (61%) who were going on holiday, 57% planned to go abroad; whilst the rest planned to holiday in Britain. The study then looked at the financial costs of a holiday, asking respondents who planned to go away roughly how much they planned to spend. The average response per individual for those going abroad for a week-long holiday was ‘£360 plus spending money’, which was estimated to be ‘£250’ for the average person. For those planning to holiday in Britain, they expected to spend an average of ‘£120’ on their stay, with £150 spending money. Respondents were also asked if they considered the expense of their holiday to be well within their budget. Some 52% of those polled admitted that it would be 'tight', 25% said that they 'could barely afford it’, while 23% felt that the expense was 'no issue'. Respondents were then asked how they planned to pay for their holiday, to which 36% confessed that they would take on debt to do so – and of these, 57% admitted to ‘going into their overdraft’ to cover the expense, 38% said they would pay on credit card and 18% said that they had ‘taken out a loan’ to cover the cost. A further 25% stated that they had borrowed or planned to borrow money off relatives or friends.

newsbulletin Fred.\ highlights alternative beer festivals for agents to sell FRED.\, WHICH specialises in city breaks and tailormade holidays to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and central Europe, is urging agents to get behind alternative beer festivals as they offer great opportunities for agents to sell. The company's UK sales manager Lawrence Peachey said: ”Many agents only really know about Munich’s annual Oktoberfest, which is enduringly popular and which gets sold out very fast each year. However, there are some great alternatives such as Hamburg’s DOM festival, Stuttgart’s Cannstatter Volkfest and Prague’s Beer Festival. These are easy to sell as clients love the idea of a short break to sample the culture and beverages of a European city and we have some very reasonable offers available.” A Beer Festival break leads in at £349 per person for a two-night short break to the Cannstatter Volkfest festival in October, staying at the three-star Intercity Hotel on a bed-andbreakfast basis, including flights from London. For more information or to book call 0808-159 5256 or e-mail lawrence@fred.travel

ID ANY of you watch the ‘Airport Live’ programmes from Heathrow on TV recently? I’m sure that few of us have given much thought to what goes on behind the scenes at the airport – I know I haven’t. These programmes gave an insight into the complex logistics and the many skills required in the day to day running of Heathrow and I found them all very interesting. Everyone from air traffic controllers to pilots, to ground staff and firemen came across as extremely professional and very passionate about their jobs. It was obvious that our safety was at the heart of everything they do. For me, the stars of the show have to be the air traffic controllers - what an amazingly complex job they do! They are such a cool headed bunch! Managing a flight arrival or departure every 45seconds must take nerves of steel. I felt stressed just watching. I hope that everyone who watched these programmes will begin to appreciate what an amazing job the airport staff do, frequently under extremely difficult circumstances. They often come in for criticism when flights are delayed and queues start building in the terminals, but more often than not it’s due to circumstances beyond their control. Just think if it wasn’t for their hard work, dedication and expertise, none of us would be going anywhere and neither would our customers. No doubt our airports will be busier than ever this year if the weather continues to be so disappointing. I can’t believe it, it’s July already and here we are still waiting for summer to arrive. I know we’ve had the odd few sunny days but that’s about it so far. I’m off to Cornwall next week so I am really hoping the weather will improve by then, but I’m not holding out too much hope. If the weather doesn’t improve I suppose there is always an upside - we should get lots of last minute enquiries from people desperate to get away for some sunshine!

agentreview Gemma Budd from Infinity Holidays in New Malden spent a night at Australia's Thala Beach Lodge in Port Douglas, Queensland, as part of the Corroboree fam trip. Here's what she thought of the property....
First impressions ....................................9/10 I received a warm welcome and was taken to the stunning panoramic guest lounge, which offers views of the rainforest canopy and the sandy beach below. I was given a welcome drink while my luggage was sent to my room, and also received a map of the resort, which outlined the resort’s amenities and a number of walking trails available throughout the grounds.
Comfort ....................................................9/10 The walk to my Jungle Walk Bungalow took me through the rainforest with views of the ocean below. The pathway was set on a relatively steep hill but Thala has golf buggies which means guests can get around the resort with ease. My bungalow was immaculate and featured a neutral décor. I instantly felt at home and loved the cosy, rustic feel of the lodge.
Quality ......................................................9/10 From the fantastic Ospreys Restaurant, which serves delicious modern Australian cuisine, to the clean and comfortable bungalows, the property did not disappoint. I liked the (many free) added extras, including garden and nature walks and stargazing at the outdoor observatory.
Affordability ..........................................10/10 A lead in room rate for a Jungle Walk Bungalow is approximately £100 per person per night.
Service ....................................................9/10 Staff were all friendly, polite and had a smile on their face.
Good to know .................................................. Brett, who takes the nature walks, is fantastic. He was passionate, enthusiastic and had so much knowledge of the rainforest and fauna surrounding the lodge.
9/ 10 Gemma receives a £10 Love2Shop voucher for her review. If you'd like to take part and receive a free Love2Shop voucher please email jill.sayles@travelbulletin.co.uk or call 020-7834 6661 with your name and contact details.

Hayes and Jarvis moves to one stop shop with single brochure HAYES AND Jarvis has launched its Worldwide brochure for 2013/14, showcasing all of the operator’s destinations. Valid for bookings from September 2013 to March 31, 2015, the brochure follows last year’s destination guide format but enhances this with more useful country profiles and facts, plus maps and tips for agents to use. As a result of the significant expansion of Worldwide this year, the operator has taken the decision to stop producing standalone brochures for specific destinations. The decision fits with the company's focus on offering multi-dimensional, multi-centre holidays that its customers are now requesting, rather than traditional single-centre beach breaks. The operator’s latest Long Haul Trend Report confirmed growing demand for this kind of holiday as sales have boomed for more complex trips that combine culture and heritage with city breaks and beach stays. In keeping with this, twin and multi-centre suggestions have been incorporated into specific hotel and resort pages rather than keeping them separate. New Latin America destinations in the brochure include Ecuador, Chile and Easter Island and new Caribbean destinations include Turks & Caicos, St Vincent and Palm Island. The programme also showcases new tours in India (in Bhutan and Nepal), as well as three new five-star properties in Cancun.

s d n a l s i r e h & spain Malaga encourages visitors to stop, stay and spend time exploring Picasso’s birthplace by JILL SAYLES
M
ALAGA CITY has been overlooked in recent years but the city is attracting increasing numbers of visitors, with international arrivals reaching 495,567 last year, an increase of 3.02% from 2011. The destination is performing particularly well for the UK market, attracting 71,609 visitors in 2012, up 6.08% compared to the previous year, making it the number one foreign market followed by Germany and France. Between January and May this year there has been 27,621, an increase of 18.49% UK visitors compared with the same period in 2012. So what factors have contributed to the city's popularity which, until recently, saw holidaymakers bypass Malaga to make a beeline for the Costa del Sol resorts? Antonio Montejo Romero from the Malaga Visitors & Convention Bureau believes that there are a number of factors leading to the destination's success. He said: “Malaga City has, in the past, been overlooked as the Costa de Sol has traditionally been a very important brand with the UK market. However, the tables have turned and Malaga is now an upcoming destination. “Following demand, we are focusing on attracting short break and city stay visitors, which is helped by the frequent air links from the UK. We are also showcasing the destination as a place to visit for culture and leisure.” According to Montejo Romero, increasing numbers of Brits are seeking a holiday that offers the combination of culture and leisure on a short break. He said popular sights include the botanical gardens; the Picasso museum, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year; the Automobile museum; the Alcazaba fortress; the recently developed promenade at the port, Palmeral de
las Sorpresas; plus city beaches, shopping and restaurants. Other notable sights include the Museo Carmen Thyssen, which focuses on Andalucian art, and the Museo de Malaga which is located in the Aduana Palace and is due to open next year. In terms of raising agents’ awareness of the destination, the city recently played host to the Advantage conference, where Enrique de Lera from the Spanish Tourist Office told delegates that it was time to rediscover Malaga following ‘dramatic’ changes over the last ten years. He said: “While the Costa del Sol used to be known for the three ‘S’s’, now it’s ‘Stop, Stay and Spend a bit’.” Montejo Romero’s advice to travel agents selling the destination is to highlight the value for money that Malaga offers. He said: “Recommend Malaga to your customers because it’s cheaper than cities such as Valencia, Barcelona and Madrid and it’s also a very Spanish destination without being too touristy. “Although Malaga has developed over the last ten years it has not lost its Andalusian roots, and the city offers a mix of Andalusian tradition and cosmopolitan experiences.” The Malaga City Tourism Board has also recently held a series of roadshows across the UK in partnership with Jet2Holidays, involving more than 300 travel agents, and is now working on developing new UK tour operator and airline activities. As an example of a short break package, Jet2holidays offers a three-night break departing on September 3 from Leeds Bradford to Malaga city. Prices lead in at £359 per person and include a stay at the four-star MS Maestranza based on two sharing on a full board basis, including 10kg hand luggage. Prestige Holidays reports strong bookings for mainland & Canaries PRESTIGE HOLIDAYS reports that it has seen a year-on-year increase in business across most of its Spanish destinations. The greatest rise in bookings has been to Mallorca, which showed a 41% increase, followed by Gran Canaria up 27% and Tenerife which has seen a 16% rise in passengers. Southern Spain is also up 6%. The operator's general manager David Skillicorn said: "Sales to the Spanish mainland are showing a respectable increase this year despite arguably being the heart of the 'low-cost arena', making them some of the more challenging destinations for traditional tour operators. "The Canaries tell a different story; they have enjoyed a very strong year despite the pound remaining relatively weak against the euro. They have also benefited from much publicised problems in North Africa, reaffirming the notion that the Brits head for
traditional holiday destinations which are familiar, comfortable and therefore safe in times of uncertainty. "They also fall within the 2,000 nautical mile Air Passenger Duty (APD) banding so they benefit from the lowest level of APD, which gives them a price advantage over other further flung winter sun destinations. In fact, some of our customers chose the Canaries over the Caribbean for this very reason." The company is currently offering reduced rates at the Jardin Tecina on La Gomera for stays up to October 31 on bookings made by July 15. As an example of prices, a week's stay departing on July 16 costs from £699 per person, saving £49, and includes flights with Monarch from Gatwick, private transfers, a representative and ferry crossings. African Pride reports increase in demand for exotic safari honeymoons AFRICAN PRIDE reports that it is seeing more couples looking for something more exotic and memorable to mark the start of their married lives, and that there has been an increase in safari honeymoons. The operator's general manager Liz Hall said: “Couples can still lounge by the pool, but why not make it a private plunge pool overlooking some of the world’s most spectacular game viewing? Walking barefoot on a white sand beach; a sunset cruise in a native wooden mokoro; tucking in for the night in a luxurious stilted treehouse; spotting lions from a river cruise: an African honeymoon can be both wild and romantic.” The company is offering tips to agents to make clients' experience more memorable. These include pacing the holiday by setting aside one or two mornings or afternoons of relaxation to enjoy Africa’s quieter side, and visits to the beach, or take the opportunity to whale watch, visit penguins or snorkel.

Survey reveals Europe remains most popular honeymoon destination for Brits FOREIGN DESTINATIONS are proving to be an increasingly popular choice amongst brides looking to escape the pressures of a UK wedding, according to a report by confetti.co.uk The annual survey of more than 2,000 brides found that despite the UK wedding remaining the most popular choice for brides in 2013, for the one in ten that will marry abroad, the majority (35%) will choose sunnier climes to escape the financial pressures that come with the traditional UK nuptials. The trend for a more low-key wedding abroad represents a break in tradition from pre-recession years, when 40% of brides cited the reason for marrying abroad being to make the big day different and special. The wedding destination isn’t the only way brides are looking to cut the cost of their wedding. When it comes to prenuptial arrangements, an increasing number of brides are opting out of a hen party weekend away or the ‘girls on tour’ trip abroad, with a third choosing a low-key meal with friends. Findings also revealed that more than one in five brides will forego their annual break in order to save for their wedding, putting other luxuries such as shopping and going out above a relaxing holiday. Despite saving money pre-wedding, the recession hasn’t affected the number of honeymooners, with the same percentage of newlyweds jetting off this year as in 2009. The romantic sights of Europe, such as the Eiffel Tour and the canals of Venice still draw in the most honeymooners as the continent remains the most popular destination for travelling newlyweds (44%). The top five honeymoon destinations in order of popularity are Europe, Caribbean, USA/Canada, UK and Indian Ocean.
