Carnival survey reveals agents feel optimistic going into 2014 BRITISH TRAVEL agents are in high spirits and feeling positive about the past year’s travel business, according to a new survey from Carnival Cruise Lines. The nationwide poll found that 84% of agents feel positive about the health of the travel industry during 2013 – compared to 82% in last November’s study. The survey also revealed that in terms of forward bookings, nearly two thirds (61%) of agents said the outlook for holiday bookings in 2014 is good or very strong. When asked how good they felt about this year’s summer season, the majority of respondents rated their mood as eight out of ten, up from six out of ten last year, with only 1% of agents feeling very negative. The findings are from the line's third Travel Agent Mood Index – an annual poll that aims to gauge the level of optimism in the UK travel trade. The survey also revealed that more than three quarters of British agents (76%) hit their sales targets during quarters two and three this year and a further 79% predict they will hit their targets for the fourth quarter. According to the survey, agents were most confident about booking all-inclusive
holidays, followed by package holidays with cruise holidays rounding up the top three. Despite several incidents faced by the cruise industry earlier this year, the results revealed that concerns on safety are not proving to be as big of a challenge as they were six months ago. Some 17% of agents this time around said safety was one of the biggest challenges facing the cruise sector at the moment – down from 33% last year. With regards to destinations, the US topped the table as the most popular holiday hot spot with Turkey and Spain coming second and third respectively. Those consumers least affected by the struggling economy – mature couples – are the holidaymakers making travel agents happy by booking the most trips (66%). Encouragingly though, families (48%) were the second most popular group of customers responsible for driving the most bookings, with young couples coming in third. When agents were asked about discounting in the cruise market, nearly half said that there was a lot of discounting but that it had improved. A further 26% of agents believed that there wasn’t too much discounting in the cruise market.

ABTA research finds one in five will pay extra for sustainable holidays RESEARCH RELEASED by ABTA – The Travel Association, has found that a significant and growing number of consumers, 38%, believe that it is their travel company’s responsibility to be environmentally responsible rather than their own; up from 28% in 2012 and 31% in 2010. At the same time, almost half of all consumers, 49%, say that they don’t want to think about being green on holiday but just want to relax, up from 38% in 2012 and 41% in 2010; a clear indication that the public are increasingly looking to the industry to take a lead on the environment rather than having to consider these issues themselves once on holiday. One in five consumers (21%) say they are prepared to pay more for a holiday with a company that has a better environmental and social record, which has increased from 14% in 2012 and 17% in 2010. Consumers are also increasingly likely to choose one company over another based on a better environmental record, 23% say they would do this, up from 19% in 2011 and 16% in 2012. There is also growing support for holidays to have
an environmental and social rating, similar to star ratings for hotels, with more than a third (36%) of consumers in favour of this, up from 25% in 2012 and 29% in 2010. Nikki White, the association's head of destinations and sustainability, said: “Our research has produced some very clear messages for the travel industry. There are a growing number of consumers, particularly the young, who are prepared to pay a premium for a holiday that is more sustainable. One of the reasons for this could be that consumers are realising that a more sustainable holiday tends to be a better holiday as it may, for example, give them opportunities to try local food and engage with local culture. The message is also clear that many consumers see sustainability as the travel industry’s responsibility and they want to go on holiday to relax, not worry or fell guilty about the environment. So, it makes clear economic sense for companies to have a well thought out sustainability plan that sells the positive benefits of sustainability to consumers and taps into this growing market.”

AD A wonderful time a couple of weeks ago at Travel Counsellors annual conference, which this year was held at Telford in Shropshire. The weekend got off to a great start at our Friday night welcome bash where we enjoyed a performance by singers from the “Jersey Boys” followed by comedian Rob Brydon. I’ve never witnessed a stampede at a conference before but that’s what happened on Saturday at our gala dinner and awards evening. No, it wasn’t because the drinks were running out! It was the arrival on stage of McFly who were the headline act of the evening. One minute, everyone was sitting nicely at their dinner tables, the next minute hundreds of people got up and hurried towards the stage. I think even McFly were surprised by the reception they received from us but it was well deserved. They were great! The conference sessions were both interesting and informative, updating us on the latest company news, innovations and future plans. We also enjoyed several interesting, inspiring and amusing guest speakers during the weekend, including the professional adventurer Debra Searle, who rowed solo across the Atlantic, and well-known businesswoman Karren Brady. There were more than 1,100 Travel Counsellors, partners and sponsors attending the conference including a number of delegates from different parts of the world. It was really good to catch up with old friends and it was a great opportunity to make contact with different representatives from our many suppliers attending and to hear all about their new products and offers. Sadly the conference was over far too quickly and it was time for everyone to head off home. We’d all had the most amazing time and I think everyone came away fired up with enthusiasm and confidence about what we can achieve in 2014. As this is my last column of the year, I’d just like to finish by wishing you all a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year!

airlinebulletin ANA goes in search of the perfect flight THE PERFECT flight would give passengers an upgrade on arrival, have David Walliams as chief of cabin crew and be piloted by Prince William, a study has found. Champagne would be the complimentary drink of choice, served 27 minutes after departure. When in-flight entertainment started, passengers would prefer to watch the James Bond favourite, Skyfall. The survey also found that on the perfect long-haul flight, British flyers would like six members of cabin crew and be served their in-flight meal 48-minutes after departure. Passengers would like to be able to board their perfect flight 32 minutes after check-in and seats would be in rows of two, with only 66 people able to board the aircraft. Other preferences included 7kg of hand luggage allowance and children would be allowed on the aircraft, but only if they were quiet. Passengers of the perfect flight would also like to experience the culture of their destination at check-in as many agree their holiday starts when they arrive at the airport.

Costa Brava welcomes increasing volume of international golf tourists THE COSTA Brava region in northeast Spain was more popular with golf tourists this year than it was last year, a new study has shown. The Costa Brava Girona Tourist Board analysed the total number of rounds played by international travellers in the region over the past two years and found that while its domestic market still dominates the landscape (50%), it is increasingly popular with foreign golfers. The region has three former Spanish Open venues including the PGA Catalunya Resort near Girona. Ramón Ramos, director of the tourist board, said: “The area is increasingly being recognised as a reputable golf destination, and especially since we were announced the IAGTO Emerging Golf Destination of the Year at IGTM 2000. “Although competition in Spain is very fierce, numbers of golfers wishing to visit the region is progressively increasing thanks to the concerted efforts and dedicated marketing and promotional campaigns we have put in place letting people know about the diversity and quality of Costa Brava’s numerous golf courses." Italy’s Lake Como to host International Golf Travel Market 2014 NEXT YEAR’S International Golf Travel Market (IGTM) will be hosted in Italy’s Lake Como region. The event will take place from October 27-30 at the Villa Erba Exhibition and Conference Centre on the banks of the lake. Jean-Marc Droulers, president of Villa Erba Spa, said: “To date, there has not been a focus on marketing our golf products to the rest of the world, despite 400 golf courses in Italy and 69 here in the Lombardy region – a concentration of courses almost equivalent to Spain’s Andalucía region. “For the development and future growth of golf in Italy, associations, clubs and resorts must come together to help promote the country as a serious European golf destination, supporting the efforts of international players such as Matteo Manassero and the Molinari brothers. “We believe hosting IGTM in Italy will provide a major opportunity to showcase the variety and quality of our golf courses, which stretch from the Alps to Naples and from Sardinia to Sicily, in locations where culture, art and food provide additional reasons to book a golf break in Italy.” For more information visit www.igtm.co.uk

New study reveals 80% of Brits now take an annual UK break ASK SOMEONE where they’ve holidayed in the last three years and chances are they will say ‘in the UK’ according to a new study which suggests that the staycation is now a firm favourite for British families. Figures released by cottages4you reveal that the number of UK holidaymakers choosing a domestic break has remained at a steady 80% since 2012 and looks set to continue. Only one in five of us still don’t consider staying in the UK a holiday. Of those questioned, 68% claimed that the Olympics and Jubilee celebrations hadn’t changed their opinion of the UK, suggesting our affection for the British break was already well established. According to the poll, the most popular reason for holidaying at home was its affordability (43%), closely followed by a desire to explore the British countryside (41%). In third place was the ease of travelling (40%) with another 17% admitting hidden airline costs had put them off overseas travel. One in ten worried about the economic instability of Europe and 16% said they were concerned about safety in some overseas locations. Cornwall was crowned the UK’s favourite holiday destination, followed by the Lake District and Scotland. London came seventh with one in ten planning to holiday in the city next year. Announcing the findings, Nick Rudge, the company's managing director, said: “This is a great boost for domestic tourism with many families now taking an annual British break, whether it’s their main summer holiday, or in addition to an overseas trip. “There are plenty of reasons why a holiday at home appeals to us and with so many different locations in such a small area, it’s easy to keep exploring new places. Although a quarter of us believe the UK has everything you need for a holiday whatever the weather, 17% of respondents said the high temperatures this summer had made them more likely to stay in the UK.”

accommodationonly Hoseasons encourages agents to promote Christmas shopping breaks HOSEASONS IS encouraging agents to capitalise on Christmas sales by suggesting to clients to take a shopping break. The operator's head of sales, Zena Calderbank, said: “There is a real opportunity here for agents to suggest to customers they turn their Christmas shopping experience into a holiday. “Just recently, a couple of my colleagues from Lowestoft came to my home city, Manchester, to visit the Christmas Market and stay at one of our city centre apartments. We enjoyed a day of full of fantastic shopping with a very long lunch, and then just as dusk approached we dropped our bags off at the apartment, with a quick glass of wine, and walked to the Christmas Market. “Whether it’s staying in one of the UK’s major shopping cities, or visiting one of the many German-style Christmas
markets, staying in a city apartment can be a really relaxing and enjoyable way of doing your Christmas shopping – it certainly beats sitting in front of a computer all evening or weekend while shopping online and it’s much better value than staying in a hotel." The company offers a selection of apartments in 23 of Britain’s most popular cities, from London, Manchester and Birmingham to regional shopping magnets such as Norwich, Edinburgh, Bristol and York. The operator is also offering a range of deals on city apartments in the lead-up to Christmas with many starting from £80 per night based on the apartment sleeping two. For more information visit www.hoseasons.co.uk/agents or call 0844 847 1144.

Psiloc World Traveller
ABU DHABI’S hotel partners are predicting another bumper year for UK visitors to the emirate next year. During WTM, stakeholders including Sofitel Abu Dhabi, The St. Regis Saadiyat Island and Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi predicted that 2014 will be the best yet for Abu Dhabi’s leisure market. Marwan Fadel, area director of sales and marketing at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island, said: “We’re seeing excellent numbers from the UK and the hotel is getting a lot of attention from British travellers. “Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority has done a great job in supporting key players in the UK and I’m optimistic that 2014 will prove a record for British visitors to Abu Dhabi.” The UK remains the emirate’s second largest overseas market, with 109,330 Brits checking into Abu Dhabi hotels in the first nine months of this year – a 10% increase on last year. British guests accounted for 518,571 guest nights – an increase of 21% yearon-year, with an average length of stay of 4.74 nights, again up 10% on the previous year. Salik Mangrio, director of sales and marketing at Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi, said: “The UK market is one of our main focuses; we have seen massive growth this year and hope to see the same next year. The leisure segment is the perfect fit for Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi, with the facilities we have and the nearby golf course.”

New online search options from getabed.co.uk GETABED.CO.UK HAS introduced new landmark and postcode search options. The new functionality is a result of feedback from trade partners who are regularly asked by customers to book accommodation close to landmarks such as the Empire State Building in New York or the opera house in Sydney. With the new tool, agents can tick the appropriate landmark from a list and then use the slider to determine how close their customer would like to stay to it. Alternatively, if there’s a particular postcode a customer wants to stay in, agents can now refine their search in this way too. To receive training on any of the above new features or to book a visit from the company’s sales team email agencysupport@getabed.co.uk
