The company's head of sales, Dino Toouli, said: “The flight is three hours and the tour is accompanied by our guest astronomer, Peter Lawrence, who makes it an unforgettable experience for guests. The flights, which can

Increased spending on travel provides boost to agents ACCORDING TO Travel Agents & Overseas Tour Operators 2014, a new Market Update from business intelligence provider Key Note, the total turnover of travel agents and tour operators in the UK grew by 2.3% last year. The UK market for travel and tourism was hit particularly hard by the 2008/09 recession and subsequent economic downturn, with economic realities severely dampening consumer confidence, thereby resulting in lower spending on travel and tourism. However, the market for travel and tourism has more recently shown signs of improvement, steadily developing and advancing upon pre-recession levels, encouraged by reassuring economic data concerning gross domestic product (GDP) growth, inflation, unemployment and household expenditure. Of particular concern to the travel and tourism market, and therefore relevant to travel agents and overseas tour operators, remains the controversial issue of Air Passenger Duty (APD), which prevails to be

considered an appreciable burden to the potential of the market. Although the tax was simplified in the March 2014 Budget, and the tax on long-haul travel is set to be reduced, the high taxes, particularly when compared against competitor countries, can ultimately diminish the attractiveness of the UK as a holiday destination and, in addition, can serve to discourage UK residents from travelling abroad. Over the short term, both domestic and outbound tourism are forecast to witness moderate growth, which in turn will be positive for enterprises engaged in travel and overseas tour operating. Domestic tourism, in particular, will be bolstered by what experts forecast will be an exceptionally warm summer this year, and travel and tourism in general will prosper as consumer confidence consolidates, therefore allowing both the volume and value of the industry to expand and return to normalcy, which in turn will offer opportunities and prospects for growth for travel agents and overseas tour operators.

PREMIER HOLIDAYS has developed personalised road books for self-drive US and Canada bookings; created exclusively for fly/drive clients covering four or more centres. The operator has developed the new road book based on agent feedback, as part of the recent upgrade to client documentation. As a result of listening to recommendations from agents, the operator has made significant changes in improving the quality of their document presentation – with leather ticket wallets now being sent out for the vast majority of bookings. The company's head of sales and marketing, Debbie Goffin, said: “We have developed the USA and Canada road books in response to agent suggestions and feedback - part of our commitment to agents is to provide quality in everything we produce, including our documentation. We wanted to create something for clients which would not only assist them in the final planning of their itinerary, but would also give them something to refer to whilst in resort.” The personalised books will be sent out with clients’ travel documents, to assist in planning their self-drive itineraries across North America, and each comes complete with detailed maps and suggested driving itineraries including full directions to each of the hotels in the itinerary. In addition, agents can take advantage of the operator's agent incentive, earning between £25-£150 per US or Canada booking, dependent on the booking value. Beds were comfortable and the hotel also offers three suites which offer a double bedroom, a separate lounge area with TV, bathroom (with a huge bath and separate shower), plenty of facilities (iron, trouser press, tea & coffee etc) and two balconies offering views of both sides of the hotel.

Quality ......................................................9/10 You can tell a hotel offers quality when even the locals pop in for a cuppa - and I met quite a few people who said they regularly meet friends for lunch. Rooms were modern, clean and appeared to be well looked after.

UK hotel rates on the rise as London becomes most expensive European city Image: www.britainonview.com

NEW RESEARCH by HRS, The Hotel Solutions Provider, has revealed that London has become Europe’s most expensive capital to stay in, seeing an increase of more than 13% compared to Q1 2013. With average room rates in London reaching nearly £116, this places the UK’s capital ahead of Zurich and Moscow which both have average room rates of £111 per room. Whilst London also remains the most expensive UK city for its average room rate per night, Edinburgh is the second most expensive in the UK (£89), with the city seeing a significant increase of almost 12% in average room rates against Q1 2013, while Dublin has increased its average room rate to more than 14%. For those after a bargain, the cheapest room can be found in

London

Liverpool which saw a decrease in room rates of nearly 5% compared to Q1 2013, with average room rates totalling an average of £69 per night. Overall, UK hotel rates increased

in the past year, alongside forecasts remaining upbeat for the UK economy, which suggests that 2014 can once again be met with similar optimism for the UK’s hotel industry.

Winner's Words Last year's winner under the 'High Fliers' category for 'Star Scheduled Flight Consolidator' went to Jetset Flights. Here, the company's sales director, Adrian Smyth, reflects on last year's win and looks forward to what this year's Star Awards hold in store...

What was the highlight of the 2013 Star Awards evening? STOMP was loud but utterly brilliant – I think our table got slightly carried away and at one stage I thought they would break the table! What made winning your award so special last year? The Travel Bulletin Star Awards are voted for by agents – being a trade only operator receiving such recognition by our only customer type is truly important, rewarding and motivational.

How have you continued to work with the trade? We only work with the trade and have recently delivered two amazing new products to help them sell even more and with even greater ease. One of the products Affinity Codes (Discount Codes) have proved so popular. What developments in the industry as a whole do you think that agents should be aware of? ATOL regulations continue to leave people somewhat unsure but importantly the CAA is looking to raise awareness of the ATOL scheme and what consumers should be looking for. Agents should

therefore ensure that they are fully compliant with the regulations and working with suppliers who make compliance as easy as possible. What new developments have you announced since last year? Package Pal our Flexible package builder is being given something of a facelift! We have taken on board comments from agents and with the help of our new web stylist, we have created the most amazing agency selling tool. The new look launches at the beginning of June and I believe agents are going to be totally blown away with the WOW factor!

Walt Disney World gives guests the option to design their experience with MyMagic+ WALT DISNEY World is giving guests the opportunity to design their Disney World holiday - from their at-home planning to their in-park experiences - with the launch of MyMagic+. While the concept will be developed over time, it currently consists of three major components. The first is MyDisneyExperience.com, a new website and free mobile app, where guests can create their own personal guide, starting with planning from home on their computer, tablet or smartphone. Families can reserve access to some of their most valued experiences in advance and get assistance along the way, plus make changes on the go with the My Disney Experience mobile app. The second component is the Disney FastPass+, where guests can select up to three FastPass+ experiences at one park per day for each day they have valid park admission. Using My Disney Experience, guests staying at Walt Disney World Resort hotels may make FastPass+ selections up to 60 days in advance of their visit. Disney Passholders and Day guests (those not staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel) using My Disney Experience are able to make FastPass+ selections 30 days in advance of their trip. After guests

have redeemed their first three selections or the redemption windows have passed, they will be able to make another FastPass+ selection at an in-park kiosk. Once they’ve used the fourth, they can select another, and so on. Access to FastPass+ is included in theme park admission for all Walt Disney World guests. Meanwhile, the MagicBand offers an all-in-one wristband device that connects guests to all the vacation choices they make online with My Disney Experience. The MagicBand serves as park admission, access to FastPass+ experiences and Disney PhotoPass photo association, all rolled into one. For guests at Walt Disney World Resort, it also serves as a room key and optional payment method. MagicBands are mailed to families ahead of their departure date or are waiting for them at their Disney Resort hotel. Day guests may use their RF-enabled theme park admission to enter the theme parks and redeem FastPass+ selections or they can purchase a MagicBand ($12.95 plus tax at merchandise locations in the parks and at Downtown Disney) and link their theme park admission to the MagicBand. Disneyland Paris unveils new attraction & mini-land inspired by Ratatouille THIS SUMMER, Disneyland Paris will unveil a major new attraction and mini-land inspired by the Oscarwinning Disney Pixar film Ratatouille. The film, directed by Brad Bird, tells the tale of Rémy, a young rat who has amazing talents in the kitchen and dreams of one day becoming a great chef. This leads to a fun but perilous

journey that eventually lands him as the head chef of one of the most famous restaurants in Paris. On the attraction Ratatouille: L’Aventure Totalement Toquée de Rémy, guests will shrink down to the size of a rat and join Rémy and his friends as they scurry through Gusteau’s famous Parisian restaurant trying to avoid the

nemesis from the film, Chef Skinner. The attraction is located in a new corner of Toon Studio that has been transformed into a Ratatouille-inspired version of the City of Light. In addition to the attraction, the mini-land also features a shop and a rat-scale themed table service restaurant, Bistrot Chez Rémy.

turkey Emerging trends & changing markets: Turkey adapts to new challenges S WE celebrate our 25th anniversary this year, it has been interesting to look back at how travel to Turkey has changed and how the market has grown since the 90s. During our first year for instance, the Gulf War meant that we had to divert much of the business to selling worldwide flights, rather than just focusing on Turkey. It is interesting to see that after so many years we are still facing similar regional problems with the current political upheaval in the Middle East, and the travel industry continues to be very sensitive to events around the world, particularly natural disasters and political upheaval.

A

Emerging trends Turkey sits as a bridge between East and West, both culturally and politically, and combined with its proximity to the Middle East, has naturally faced ups and downs over the years. Despite all these challenges, in the last 25 years tourism to Turkey has managed to develop in quite an impressive way. In 1989, approximately 200,000 British people took their holidays in Turkey and in recent years it has peaked at more than 2.5 million visitors from the UK alone. Tourism in Turkey has developed in two directions. Mass tourism is mainly focused on the Antalya region, with the large resorts at Alanya, Side, Kemer and Belek. Meanwhile, the specialist market has grown up around the Dalaman region, covering the traditional harbour towns and lesserknown destinations such as Kalkan, Fethiye, Akyaka, Dalyan, Datça and Selimiye. It is a relief that amidst all of this development, there are still plenty of bureaucrats and mayors who appreciate the importance of attracting quality, niche clientele and have managed to retain the traditional charm of these picturesque fishing villages and coastal towns. It has also been refreshing to see that many investors in Turkey now don’t just look at developments with a commercial eye, but choose to reflect their passion in smaller, boutique hotels that offer local character and a more authentic experience to visitors. Tailor-made options Turkey is also becoming a major destination for tailormade holidays, with so much to experience. Visitors can discover nearly 10,000 years of history including some of the largest and most important archaeological sites in the

by AKIN KOÇ, managing director, Anatolian Sky Holidays world - huge open air museums documenting the meeting of eastern and western civilisations. Undoubtedly some of the biggest attractions lie in the Cappadocia region, where the fairy tale landscape offers glimpses into a fascinating ancient history. The underground cities here were built by the Hittites, early Christians who escaped from persecution by the Romans and sought refuge underground. They existed, hidden away, for hundreds of years, creating vast underground cities, complete with livestock and some of the very first churches which can still be seen today. For a different perspective on the landscape of Cappadocia, agents should recommend clients take a hot air balloon flight, which is a very popular experience for visitors to the region. For active clients, one of the very best ways to explore all that Cappadocia has to offer is on a walking holiday – each day guided walks uncover lesser-known corners of the region and combine experiencing the amazing scenery with plenty of historic and cultural surprises. A real mix Turkey is so much more than just a destination for beach holidays and a huge range of tailor-made options is available to agents and their clients. For example, threecentre holidays that combine a short stay in Istanbul, a visit to Cappadocia and then a week relaxing in one of the Dalaman region’s peaceful seaside resorts offer clients a real taste of everything Turkey has to offer. For the more adventurous too there are opportunities to create tailormade itineraries and join small group tours beyond Cappadocia into Eastern Turkey to visit Mount Nemrut, Ishak Pasa Saray and Mount Ararat. As the tourist industry continues to develop, it will be interesting to see what the next 25 years bring. For example, changes are already being made to the visa rules, designed to smooth the arrivals process for foreign nationals. Until this year, all tourists were required to purchase entry visas at the airports on arrival, but this led to overcrowding and long queues. The Turkish Government has introduced a new scheme which requires clients to purchase a visa online before departure. At Anatolian Sky we hope to minimise hassle for agents and their clients by offering this service free of charge for all bookings, leaving more time to plan for many adventures in Turkey. ✦

turkey Q&A with Ali Selcuk Can, Culture and Tourism Attache, Ministry of Culture & Tourism How have UK visitor statistics performed over the last 12 months? Turkey is ranked 6th in terms of the number of tourists by the World Tourism Organisation (WTO). Last year 39,860,771 people visited Turkey, representing a year-on-year increase of 5.69%. Turkey is also one of the most popular and affordable holiday destinations for the UK with the country ranking 6th for Brits travelling to short-haul destinations (source: MINTEL). In 2013, Turkey attracted 2.51 million British visitors, an increase of 2.15% from 2012, during which time they spent a total of £654million while holidaying there. This increase is in line with the general outgoing British tourist statistics. What does your current campaign highlight? The Turkish Culture and Tourism Office is focusing on promoting cultural travel and highlighting the country's diverse offerings for 2014. We are telling potential travellers that some of the top reasons for visiting Turkey are its archaeological treasures, including 11 UNESCO sites; two Wonders of the Ancient World; 382 Blue Flag beaches; 21 Blue Flag marinas; along with spa and thermal offerings, golfing facilities and ski centres. Turkey also has a greater number of endemic plant species than

the whole of Europe plus plenty of cultural and sporting events throughout the year. What emerging trends are you seeing with UK visitors? Even though the frequency of travel is mostly related to economic conditions, we are seeing that there is a slight change in British consumers' travel choices. In particular because of city living, there is an emerging new segment which prefers to escape into the natural environment and enjoy adventure activities and sports. What areas are becoming increasingly popular with visitors? One of Turkey's hotspots for 2014 is the beautiful town of Alacati. Holidaymakers are always looking for a new and exciting resort to enjoy, especially if it's as characterful and charming as Alacati on Turkey's Aegean coast . Frequented by

the sophisticated set from Istanbul yet virtually unknown outside of the country, Alacati is special as its beautiful cobbled streets are dotted with stone houses which have been lovingly converted into hundreds of chic yet intimate boutique hideaways. Mostly owner-run, these small establishments offer a top-notch and sophisticated setting in a pretty town of cobbled streets lined with cafes and restaurants. Set on the breezy Aegean coast it’s also world-renowned as a top spot for windsurfers which also add to its lively nightlife. Beyond Alacati the landscape is olive-tree strewn hillsides, converted windmills, natural thermal spas, ancient ruins and golden beaches. Turkey's geology and history makes it a great destination for a detoxing spa experience with more than 1,600 thermal springs across the country and hamam and massage treatments that have been perfected over thousands of years. There are a huge array of luxury hotels, Turkish baths and spa centres offering visitors the perfect spa experience to suit all tastes and budgets, as well as regions such as Afyon in central Anatolia starting to make a name for themselves in this field. Perhaps less well-known is Turkey's attractiveness as a health tourism destination for its state-of-theart medical and dental services and great value for money.

Pegasus Airlines sees 25% increase in passengers in first quarter of 2014 PEGASUS AIRLINES' newly released traffic results for the first quarter of 2014 reveal a year-on-year increase in the number of guests by 25.4% to 4.08million and a year-on-year increase in seat capacity by 24.7% to 5.18million. At the end of the first quarter, the carrier had also reached a network of 80 destinations compared with 70 at the end of the same period in 2013, with a 27.3% share of Turkey’s domestic market and 11.6% share of the international market. The airline currently flies to 83 destinations in 34 countries, including 30 destinations within Turkey and 53 in the rest of the world. Sertac Haybat, the carrier's general manager, said: "We

ended 2013 with double-digit growth figures, and we have entered 2014 with the same rapid growth. We are very proud of our traffic data for the first quarter of 2014 which shows faster growth than the sector average. "According to figures from Turkey's General Directorate of State Airports Authority there has been an increase in overall guest numbers for the sector in Turkey by 17% during the first quarter of 2014. However, we have seen an increase of 25.4% in the growth of our guest numbers for the same period. We are very happy to have expanded 1.4 times faster than the rest of the sector.” For more information visit www.flypgs.com/en

It's all or nothing when John's haggling at Istanbul's Grand Bazaar... John Guinn runs Holiday Hut and has a weekly travel show on internet radio station, Secklow Sounds. He also contributes regularly to UK Health Radio. The Grand Bazaar HE GRAND Bazaar in Istanbul is more than 550 years old, spans across 64 streets, has more than 3,000 shops and is visited by between 250,000 and 400,000 shoppers each day. However, I have a problem. I can’t haggle and at the Bazaar it’s expected. I’m just hopeless at it. No matter what the price is, I just go ‘that seems reasonable, here is all my money and left kidney.’ Luckily the internet can come to my rescue. It won’t do the haggling for me, but there are countless experts out there with advice on how to haggle like a local. Here are my favourite tips. 1. The Bazaar is divided into sections of similar shops. So the shopper automatically has the upper hand as it’s easy to see how much cheaper it is elsewhere. 2. Go early. The salesperson will be targeted for a certain number of sales per day. If you shop early they may be keener to sell for less. Once the target has been met then it’s all about selling for as high as possible. 3. Never look like you are interested in the stock. Just look around, make mental notes and try not to worry about being impolite when ignoring the sales team. 4. Don’t name your price, just ask for their price. Once you have given your price then it’s game over. 5. When given the price, just mumble and start to walk out of the shop. 6. Watch out for attempts to break the negotiation, such as offers of tea or conversations about families. Stick to the matter in hand. 7. Don’t listen to any sob stories. Although I probably will. 8. Don’t go over the top, discounts are rarely as high as 50% or more.

T

Of course, I’ll still probably walk away after spending too much, and I’ll still lose a kidney.

Also included is a trip to Grimsö Wildlife Research Station – Sweden’s leading research centre for predators such as lynx, brown bears and wolves – where visitors will receive an in-depth lecture on wolves by researchers who have dedicated years to the study of the creatures. Following the visit to the research station, the night is spent under canvas in the heart of wolf territory. Prices include flights and taxes, the return rail journey from Stockholm to Skinnskatteberg, all wildlife tours, accommodation (guesthouse and tent in Skinnskatteberg and hotel in Stockholm) and most meals. The tour departs on selected Wednesdays from June 25 to September 17. For more information or to book call 01274-875199 or see www.taberhols.co.uk
