BREAKING THE ICE IN BRISTOL...Thomson has opened its third holiday design store in Broadmead, Bristol. The new store features some of the latest retail innovations including an 84” touch screen interactive map and interactive tables designed to inspire and entertain customers whilst they research their holidays. Pictured marking the launch are, from the left: the agency's Doug Nye, Jill Carter, Louise Hutchins and Leanne Falmer, with Mayor George Ferguson and Shaun Brown from Bristol International Airport.

Global Travel Group survey reveals most successful marketing tools used by agents to attract new business WORD-OF-mouth and social media topped the list of the most popular marketing tools for attracting new clients according to new research from The Global Travel Group. Lending weight to the argument that traditional marketing materials are slowing, four out of five respondents in a recent survey ranked word-of-mouth as the tool they have had the most success with when attracting new clients, compared to web-based marketing, newsletters, community events, newspapers, telemarketing and mobile or radio advertising. Coming in at a close second, more than two-thirds of agents ranked social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter as the second most popular marketing channels with which they have attracted the most leads since they joined the consortium. While The Global Travel Group has long supported agents with a wide range of traditional marketing collateral which agents can then tailor with their own branding and logos in order to build their own individual business profiles, last year the company unveiled its newly revitalised training scheme for new members in which social media marketing is given a starring role. With programme content shaped directly by feedback from agents, the new academy features a dedicated ‘Benefits of Social Media’ session where agents are offered a crash course in social media and how the various channels can help drum up new business and secure new client leads. The GTG's head of marketing, Darren Zabinski, said: “Despite a vast array of marketing tools designed to target audiences in every way, shape or form, it seems the age-old standard of word-of-mouth is still the most popular way for businesses to attract new clients, be they a fast food operator, a clothing store or in The Global Travel Group’s case, travel agents. Through our revamped training academy we strive to emphasise the importance of face-to-face relationships in the travel industry and, with social channels becoming the predominant driving force behind our agents’ marketing strategy, our ‘Benefits of Social Media’ session will ensure all new agents are provided with the tools they need to stay one step ahead of the competition. “From a marketing perspective, our goal is to reduce the amount of time agents have to spend thinking about marketing so that they can focus their efforts on what they do best –helping clients to make the most of their holidays and providing them with offers that are light years ahead of our nearest competitors.” For more information visit www.globaltravelgroup.com or call 0844-826 4567.

newsbulletin Survey reveals one in ten plan to take at least three trips this year SUN SEEKING Brits plan on spending more money on holidays this year according to a new survey conducted by Skyscanner. The company polled 1,000 UK travellers about their holiday plans for 2014 and how they plan to manage the budget, with more than a quarter (27%) anticipating spending more on their holidays and less than a third (30%) planning to cut back. The survey found that 41% intend on taking more than one holiday this year, while one in ten plan to jet off at least three times. In terms of financing their holiday, during 2013 two thirds of holidaymakers (66%) used their savings to pay for the holidays,

with one in ten putting money aside for their next trip as soon as they arrived home from the last. However, almost a quarter (24%) paid for their last holiday with a loan or credit card, while 3% admitted to borrowing money from friends or relatives. The survey also showed that holidays are essential to many Brits, whether they can afford it or not. More than a third (36%) of sun-starved Brits said they would find a way to get away, no matter what. Almost three quarters (74%) said they would consider travelling to non-Euro destinations this year in order to save money, while more than 80% are willing to give up other luxuries in order to enjoy their trips abroad.

Fred. Olsen targets first time cruisers with all-inclusive brochure FRED. OLSEN Cruise Lines has launched a new brochure called 'AllInclusive Holidays' targeted specifically at the 'yet to cruise' market. The brochure offers simple, allinclusive pricing, based on one cabin type, and tackles some of the perceived challenges of cruise headon, using more familiar mainstream cruise vocabulary, such as 'Ocean View Room', rather than 'Outside Cabin'. Prices start from £510 per person and all holidays include en suite accommodation; all meals; selected beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks; tea and coffee throughout the day; ice cream at selected venues; leisure facilities, including gym, swimming pools and Jacuzzis; daily activities

and lectures; all evening entertainment; captain’s drinks party and gala buffet; all UK port taxes; and baggage porterage. The line's new ‘Enjoyment Promise’ is also available to new guests – for bookings made by February 28, on departures of more than 14 weeks ahead, with a duration between seven and 35 nights – offering peace of mind that, should clients not enjoy their holiday, the company will refund them their fare and pay for them to return home. To further encourage new bookings from first time cruisers, the line is offering 10% savings off its brochure fares for bookings made by February 28 and if guests book two cruises they can save 20% off both cruises, while booking three or more cruises

offers 30% off all cruises. Itineraries in the new brochure include Braemar’s tennight ‘Canary Islands & Madeira’ cruise on April 23 with prices from £685; Black Watch’s 11-night ‘Highlands & Islands’ cruise on August 23 with prices from £1,190; and Balmoral’s ten-night ‘Waterways & Cities of Europe’ cruise on October 24 with prices from £820. Superbreak’s January sales launch offers 50% discounts SUPERBREAK HAS launched its biggest January offers campaign for agents to promote, including three for two breaks in Europe, 50% discounts on Sunday night stays and complimentary sightseeing tickets to attractions such as the Thames or Seine river cruise. A wide range of deals are available across the UK and Europe for bookings made throughout this month. The free night stays in Europe can be booked as part of the operator’s Eurostar and flight inclusive packages, and also include four nights for the price of three or seven nights for six. A range of sightseeing tickets can be added on at the end of a booking without charge. These include a London Thames river cruise, Paris Seine cruise and a Ghost Walking tour in York. A typical package including a three-night stay in a three-star Paris hotel, including breakfast, Eurostar travel and a complimentary Seine river cruise costs £148 per person. Meanwhile, new system developments have taken the operator’s flight inclusive packages to the next level, meaning that agents can now book hundreds of direct, scheduled services online from local airports to key short break destinations and combine them with hotels and ancillaries, all under the security of the operator's ATOL protection. Examples include KLM, with flights available to Amsterdam from airports such as Manston, Humberside and Durham Tees Valley; CityJet, with connections from London City to Dundee; bmi regional, which offers routes including Aberdeen to Norwich, Bristol to Munich and Birmingham to Gothenburg; and Darwin Airline, with flights available to popular cities such as Paris, Amsterdam, Milan and Geneva from Cambridge Airport. The company's sales director, Jane Atkins, said: "Agents have a real opportunity to increase their revenues now - there is no need for them to use various sources to find the different elements, we can package it all. Protection continues to be hugely important and as changes occur to the ATOL regulations, I feel our packages really will come into their own.” In the domestic market, flights are now available to and from a wide range of regional airports with airlines such as Little Red, BMI and Eastern Airways. The operator believes its short breaks will now be even more accessible to those around the country as agents can book flight-inclusive packages to places that customers perhaps didn’t realise were doable for a weekend. For example – fly from Aberdeen to Norwich or vice versa with BMI or Cardiff to Newcastle with Eastern Airways. Looking ahead, further development is planned for the key short break booking period in late January/February with the addition of flight and hotel options to mid-haul destinations such as New York, Boston, Las Vegas and Dubai. For details see www.superbreak.com/agents or call 0871-221 4444.

newsbulletin Taber Holidays revamps summer 2014 brochure to mark 40th anniversary

Notes from . . . n o t n a m r o N HOPE EVERYONE had a fantastic Christmas and New Year and I wish everyone a brilliant 2014. I recently discovered how different calendars are, in that I thought they all started the week on a Monday. Must be a coincidence that is how I have had them in the past, but then I had a couple of charity ones with one starting on a Saturday and the other on a Sunday. Can’t get used to them! Talking of calendars, did you know that if you were a hoarder and still had a calendar from 1986 you could use it again as it is exactly the same day wise as 2014! I was also reading that high doses of Vitamin E are very good at slowing down Alzheimer’s – you are probably thinking that after the above useless information I should start taking it! I am sure most of you will know Darren Phillips. He has been covering Andrea Parkinson’s maternity leave at Travelcube for over a year and is now up for grabs for his next challenge – you know he puts 110% effort into any job he does, so if you have a job or know of one that he might be interested in, please email him on darren1964@hotmail.co.uk. Let’s face it, the travel industry would be a duller place without him in it! Loving the Fred. Olsen advert, especially at the end in big text where it says ‘See Your Travel Agent’. We need more tour operators doing that please! I’ve been helping out at Idle Travel and I must say it does seem to be nice and busy - not just the odd half hour but almost continuous with a wide variety of enquiries and bookings - from cruises, safaris, London breaks, lodges in this country and of course the bucket and spade European holidays – it really does make the day go fast. ‘Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning’ and ‘Some of the world’s greatest feats were accompanied by people not smart enough to know they were impossible’.

Andrew Ward (Serbia) “2013 has seen strong growth for Serbia from European markets and emerging markets such as China. The UK was up 7% on first 9 months of 2013 compared with the same period in 2012. In 2014 VisitBritain joins forces with the ETOA in March to deliver Hosted Buyers Marketplace- the largest B2B tourism event promoting Britain internationally at Wembley Stadium.” Suzanne Halil (Oman) “2013 was a successful year with increased fam trips, twice as many agents trained and more Tour operator partnerships. operatorreview Abi David from Caribtours went on a fam with the Grenada Board of Tourism and stayed at Calabash in Grenada for a week. Here are her thoughts...

First impressions ..............................10/10 A very warm welcome and relaxing atmosphere. I was shown straight to my gorgeous pool suite overlooking the manicured gardens.

Comfort ..............................................9/10 I felt very at home, especially having breakfast served on my balcony each morning.

Quality ................................................9/10 The hotel is of a very high standard and it’s easy to see why they have so many repeat guests. The food at Rhodes Restaurant was delicious and the restaurant is obviously popular not just with guests, but outside clients too. We were lucky enough to see one of their five villas whilst we were there, called Hummingbird, and it was truly spectacular.

Service ................................................9/10 I forgot to order breakfast on the first night so when I called reception the next morning they organised for the maid to come over and make it for me. Service was always given with a smile.

Good to know ............................................ Try the shrimp and callaloo tart at Rhodes Restaurant.

Canadian Tourism Commission set to host London networking event THE CANADIAN Tourism Commission has confirmed that it will host Canada Shared, its B2B and media networking event, on Thursday February 27 in Central London. Following the success of Canada Shared, Canada Squared last year, the commission intends to bring over a larger number of Canadian suppliers to meet with the British industry. Companies such as Rocky Mountaineer, Fairmont Hotels and Via Rail will bring new Canadian Signature Experiences (CSE) representing diverse holiday experiences such as Arctic lodges, sea kayaking operators, Aboriginal trails and ranches to the table. The commission expects to host more than 50 Canadian companies at this year's event alongside a range of German and French operators. British operators and Canada Specialist Agencies will be invited to an afternoon of speed networking, while the evening will be turned into a pop-up Canada event supported by provincial partners Tourism Yukon, Destination British Columbia, Travel Alberta, Tourism Ontario, Destination Quebec and the Atlantic Canada Tourism Partnership. Rupert Peters, regional managing director - core markets, of the commission, said: “Canada Shared, Canada Squared was very well received in 2013 by both Brits and Canadians alike. The royal endorsement from Prince Andrew was the icing on the cake and a hard act to follow, but the team are working hard to create an event that encourages business and reminds the industry of the outstanding tourism product the country has to offer.”

For more information visit www.keepexploring.ca/cse Meanwhile, the CTC has launched its spring advertising campaign which runs for eight weeks in print and online alongside a three-week integrated cinema campaign. The commission has partnered with organisations such as Air Canada, Atlantic Canada Tourism Partnership, Travel Alberta, Ontario Tourism Destination British Columbia, Destination Quebec, and, for the first time, Aboriginal Tourism British Columbia for advertising campaigns launching on February 1, which will run for between four and six weeks. The cinema and online campaign will revisit the ‘Canada Shared’ footage, compiled from footage submitted by Canadians in 2012. Online will also use video clips, including new ones such as a beluga whale spot filmed in the Hudson Bay. In print and online, the commission will be using new images taken in Alberta and Newfoundland, with consumers being directed to specific price-led packages. Operator partners include Bon Voyage, Cox and Kings, Discover Holidays and North American Travel Service. Peters said: “For these campaigns, we’re using the media channels that give Canada its broadest reach and impact across these markets. We’re also delighted to have Aboriginal Tourism BC working alongside us for the first time, highlighting some of the great travel stories and experiences within First Nations Canada.” For more information visit www.keepexploring.ca

Antigua has been on John's mind... John Guinn runs Holiday Hut and has a weekly travel show on internet radio station, Secklow Sounds. He also contributes regularly to UK Health Radio. ’M THINKING about Antigua a lot at the moment. In fact it is so much in my mind that I replayed an interview I did back in 2012 with Colin James, CEO, Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority on a recent show. You can hear it here http://tinyurl.com/q3rnlhv . You can be forgiven for thinking that the recent bad weather has made me think about the sun, sea and sand while relaxing on one of the island’s 365 beaches. Or perhaps you’re thinking about the friendly welcome from the locals. It could have been the surreal moments I experienced while on previous trips, such as someone getting on the bus carrying a chainsaw (I’ve yet to see this in the UK), or Scooby wearing a woolly hat in the middle of the sea at Stingray City (it was early, but it wasn’t that cold). But it’s none of these. It is far more serious than escaping the British winter. I am thinking about Antigua as I am critically low on hot sauce. More specifically, Susie’s Hot Sauce. I bought a selection home with me after my last trip. I had thought that I had run out in November, but luckily I found another bottle at the back of the cupboard. However, it is getting low. You see, I judge a destination on what I can put on my breakfast. Nothing compares to the original Susie’s Hot Sauce. Susie’s Hot Sauce was created by Susannah Tonge back in the 1960s and is now under the watchful eye of her daughter, Rosemarie McMaster. How good is it? Well it is so good “Rosie” received the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2009. So, if you are visiting Antigua in the next few weeks please can be bring me a few bottles back? I’ll be eternally grateful.

TURKEY HAS been awarded a total of 383 Blue Flag Beaches and 21 Blue Flag Marinas for 20013/14, representing more than a one in ten (10.5%) share of Blue Flag-awarded beaches and marinas. The Blue Flag is one of four projects under the co-ordination of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and the Environmental Education Foundation of Turkey (TURCEV), which designates which beaches and marinas have the right to display a Blue Flag and is judged on the basis of cleanliness of water, environmental concerns, security, safety and services. In order to maintain Blue Flag status, the marina or beach must meet the assessment criteria every year. In addition all marinas and beaches have to provide information panels on the cultural and natural assets of the sea and provide the data on Blue Flag accreditation. Marinas have an additional criterion to fulfil: a 'rapid response plan' in case of fire, accident or similar events. For more information see www.gototurkey.co.uk
