Thomson & first Choice see surge in last minute adult-only bookings With unpredictable weather set to continue and kids now settled back at school, Thomson and First Choice report demand for a range of destinations as adults look to escape abroad to spend some last-minute, child-free fun in the sun. With highs of 32 degrees in the Caribbean, 35 degrees in Cyprus and even 30 degrees in Spain in early September compared to lows of 8 degrees in the UK, the operators say it’s easy to see why Brits are heading off to warmer climates. The holiday companies have seen an increase in bookings to short-haul destinations, with bookings to the Costa del Sol, Spain increasing by 20% and a 72% increase in holidays to Costa Brava compared to this time last year. Europe’s rising star, Croatia remains a popular choice for those looking for a new experience, with bookings up by 84% compared to last year, and the islands of Menorca and Mallorca are also proving popular with holidaymakers not wanting to venture too far for their last minute break. Mid-haul getaways are also on the rise as UK weather turns colder with Mediterranean hotspot Cyprus proving to be popular with a 43% rise. Holidaymakers looking to venture further afield have set their sights on sunny Jamaica which has seen a 39% rise in bookings in the past week compared to 2014. Meanwhile, the holiday companies are anticipating a strong winter with an extensive range of direct flights to exotic destinations like Thailand and Mexico on the Thomson 787 Dreamliner, as well as the introduction of a new six-week programme to picturesque winter beauty spot, Iceland for January to March 2016. This November will also see Costa Rica added to the long-haul programme, served by the first direct flight from the UK, connecting adventurers with Central America’s famous rainforests and wildlife. For further information see www.firstchoice.co.uk or call 0871-200 7799.
Survey results reveal 40% avoid international travel due to cost A RECENT survey by Inghams reveals that 40% of respondents used finances as a reason as to why they haven’t travelled outside of the UK. Whilst finances were given as the biggest reason why holidaymakers would avoid travel to a foreign country, it was not the sole answer given. A surprising 20% stated the potential language barrier as a reason to stay home, whilst a fear of flying was enough to put off 18% of respondents. The company says that the three diverse reasons are difficult matters for agents to tackle, particularly when fear comes into the equation. Holidays must be appealing enough to warrant the price tag attached, whilst individuals must take steps to overcome their personal fears, whether by learning ● continued on next page

basic words and phrases for their destination of choice or taking the plunge and facing their flying phobia. But it’s not all doom and gloom, with agents advised to capitalise on the positive answers given. Women in particular seem to lead the pack when it comes to bold holiday choices, with 38% stating that there is nothing that would stop them embarking on an 1830 holiday. Men were not so bold, with 41% saying they would not embark on a single holiday adventure, when only 31% of women said the same. Women were also much more likely to not let anything stand in their way of a snow holiday, with more than two thirds of respondents eager to take the plunge. So, what can be taken from these results? The operator suggests that although money may be an overarching factor for many, travel agents should focus on providing new, exciting experiences that allow people to live out their fantasy experiences – without paying a premium price for it.

The two new brochures provide details of 374 properties and tours, with comprehensive descriptions, details of services and facilities and lead-in prices. The operator has added 30 new, carefully selected hotels, ranging from top end luxury five-star deluxe resorts to four-star offerings and the occasional three-star superior that the operator considers worthy of note. Star ratings for the properties are also featured, which have been supplied by either the destination tourist board or by the hotel. The company’s founder and managing director, Brendan Maguire, said: “Over the years we have fine tuned our brochures to become a compelling sales tool and a good reference document for our agents and we are delighted with the feedback that we have received so far on these new publications. While our website becomes more and more important for the latest information, offers, incentives etc., we feel there is no better way to convey the high quality of our products than by giving our agents’ clients the opportunity to browse through our exquisite and luxurious brochures.”

AST WEEK, I headed up to London to attend Travel Bulletin’s Star Awards gala evening held at the Landmark hotel. What a great night - lovely venue, an excellent meal followed by first class entertainment. The highlight of the evening was obviously the awards themselves and this year the award presentations was hosted by the well-known actor and presenter Christopher Biggins. There was much excitement on my particular table when almost everyone except myself picked up an award. It wasn’t long before the Champagne corks were popping as we all joined in toasting their success. Instead of the usual West End musical show performance that we’ve enjoyed in previous years, the entertainment this year brought a little bit of culture to the proceedings as we were treated to performances from the English National Opera. I always feel a bit like Cinderella when I attend these awards as I am always watching the time and have to slip off before midnight to ensure I catch my last train home. The Landmark is a really lovely five-star hotel and it would be great if I could stay there overnight to avoid having to hurry off before the end of the evening and miss the party. However, London five-star hotels are always expensive so unfortunately I think I’ll just have to continue doing my ‘midnight flit’. On the subject of awards, I’ve just heard that Travel Counsellors has been nominated in the forthcoming “British Travel Awards 2015”. They have been nominated in two categories - Best National Travel Retailer and Best Travel Retailer for Customer Service. I’m off on holiday next week and by the time you read this column, all being well, I’ll be sunning myself in Turkey. As I mentioned in a previous column, a few months ago, my husband was lucky enough to win a prize in a charity raffle and the prize consisted of a self-catered apartment at Kusadasi Golf & Spa Resort for a week and money towards the cost of the flights. I’m looking forward to going to Turkey as I’ve only ever visited Istanbul. No, I tell, a lie, I did stop once when on a cruise but that was just for a few hours so it will be interesting to actually stay at a resort hotel and to see what it’s like. Will tell you about it in my next column.

APH compares business facilities at selection of UK’s busiest airports ACCORDING TO the results from the latest Travel Leaders Group Survey, business travel is expected to increase by more than 7% this year. With this figure in mind, Airport Parking and Hotels (APH), the long-stay airport parking operator, has created a guide comparing the business facilities on offer at some of the UK’s busiest airports to highlight how the business traveller is being catered for. The research highlights the business facilities available at Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted, Birmingham and Manchester Airports, and compares amenities such as phone charging stations, business parking services, free Wi-Fi access and meeting room space. With Wi-Fi access an essential tool for those travelling for work, business travellers will be pleased to know that complimentary Wi-Fi is on offer at every airport however the length of time available to passengers was found to vary. For instance, Birmingham Airport offers free unlimited Wi-Fi throughout the airport whereas at Gatwick this is restricted to 45 minutes per passenger and at Manchester and Stansted Airport, to 60 minutes. Meanwhile, Heathrow offers up to four hours of free Wi-Fi and allows passengers to then pay for
12
additional access if required. Likewise, at Manchester and Gatwick, passengers are offered the option to buy add-on packages costing up to £5 per hour and £3 respectively for additional access. With the constant need to also charge electronic devices and be able to keep in touch with the office, both Gatwick Airport and Heathrow Airport offer dedicated phone and charging facilities throughout all terminals. However, the costs were found to vary with Heathrow offering its charging facilities free of charge to all passengers but Gatwick charging £1.50 for 30 minutes. For those business travellers looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the terminal, each airport surveyed offers extensive pre-book and on-the-day lounge access. The most expensive paid-for lounge was the Plaza Premium Lounge at Heathrow’s Terminal 2, charging a pre-bookable entrance fee of £35, which allows guests to enjoy a host of luxury facilities including relaxation rooms, a tapas bar and shower rooms. Meanwhile, travellers flying from Gatwick’s North Terminal can enjoy the Servis Air Lounge (Aspire) from £15.99, including unlimited Wi-Fi, charging facilities, complimentary soft

drinks, wine, beer and selected sprits, as well as complimentary hot dishes and snacks. Travellers considering booking an airport lounge would be wise to book in advance as purchasing a ticket onthe-day can cost as much as £5 more at Gatwick’s North Terminal No.1 Traveller Lounge, Stansted’s Escape Lounge and all Manchester Airport’s Escape Lounges when compared to pre-booked tickets. Each of the airports in the survey also offered dedicated fast track services, with those travelling through Birmingham Airport able to dodge the queues from as little as £3 and at Manchester Airport from £3.50. The fast track priority service at Gatwick is offered to those travelling in Business Class only and at Heathrow Airport, the departures fast track service through security is only available to First and Business Class passengers and American Express and Centurion card holders. Meanwhile at Stansted, the facility is only available to those passengers making a Valet Car Park booking, Mid Stay Express booking, Stansted Express First Class booking or those who are travelling as part of a premium airline seat reservation. Industry Insight by......... Chair of AITO Agents, Gemma Antrobus, considers how we can achieve true happiness…
here is no denying that the striking image of a tiny Syrain boy (Aylan Kurdi), lying face down in the sand will have plucked on the heart strings of every person viewing it.
T
It has been wonderful to hear some positive stories in the travel trade of companies who have rallied together to raise funds for the Syrian refugee crisis, but these stories are relatively few, compared to the size of our industry. It got me thinking about the reason for this, and I can only assume that people have very individual opinions of the matter. Should we, as a nation, be accepting and supporting those displaced from their home countries? Some will welcome with open arms, whilst others are fearful of the drain on our economy. Neither opinions are wrong and we are all entitled to our own opinions.
amount of money and ask one to spend that money on themselves and the other to spend it on someone else, there will be little or no change in the happiness level of the person who treats themselves. Yet for the person who spends that money on a friend or stranger, their level of happiness greatly increases. We all have a cause that is close to our own hearts, so for businesses it’s challenging to find a charity that every employee will feel the same level of passion supporting. Is it medical research, poverty, an animal related cause, something local or overseas?

Doing something personal with your family will give you greater satisfaction, but don’t worry if there is no money tree at the bottom of your garden. You can buy your happiness in other ways. Why not pop in to check on an elderly or less-abled neighbour, give some time at a soup kitchen or shelter, hold a bake sale for a larger charitable organisation or encourage your children to do a sponsored silence and let them choose where to donate the money?
become happier, we must become more altruistic"
What is undeniable, however, is that when we do raise money, give our time or promote awareness for a cause, it has the amazing ability of making us feel good; some would go so far as to say ‘happy’.
We all work hard – either for personal fulfilment, career aspirations or merely to pay the bills and live a comfortable life – but I see it all the time, that with every promotion, salary increase, incentive or commission payment, our happiness levels are rarely elated for very long. Why is this? Could it be that the more we earn, the more we spend, so effectively we live in a cycle that never provides true fulfilment?
Our collective efforts – as individuals within this industry – will make a difference both near and far and bring a smile to your face at the same time. image: Aaron Amat
I started to research this subject a little, as it interested me. What did I find? In brief, that in order to become happier, we must become more altruistic. Studies show that if you give two people the same www.travelbulletin.co.uk

Eva Choukri Key Accounts Manager - Global Sales Office UK, Rotana Hotels
At home What's your favourite household gadget? My Nutribullet which my ten year old twin daughters convinced me to buy. I love to make delicious smoothies with it and it gets the girls to eat more fruit. What are your favourite TV programmes? I don’t watch much TV but if MasterChef is on it will usually grab my attention. Who does the cooking? Mostly my Au Pair cooks for my girls during the week and then I like to cook on the weekends. I usually do a nice Sunday Roast for the family. What's a typical weekend for you like? My weekends are spent having fun with my girls. I like to take them shopping, go to the park, visit friends and we often go out for lunch. What's your guilty pleasure? Champagne. What do you do to relax? I love going to the gym. Spinning classes help me to release energy and then I usually do a yoga class to relax.
At play Where would you most like to visit and why? I have travelled most parts of the world but still have not been to Australia. Everyone raves about it, so I would like to find out for myself to see if it’s as good as it’s cracked up to be.
I’m keen to start using Twitter actively, however, I’m still trying to get the hang of it!
What are your hobbies? I love going to concerts and listening to music. I recently went to see Beck, The Strokes, Nile Rodgers and Grace Jones in Hyde Park – it was fun to see the bands out in the open air!
What is your best quality? I have a very open-minded, easy-going personality.
What's your favourite (non-work related) website? I enjoy Facebook as it helps me to stay in touch with all my friends from the USA. While living in Seattle for 18 years, I worked as a senior account manager at Expedia and I was lucky to meet a lot of incredible people there. Do you use social media for work and play? I definitely do. I am an avid LinkedIn user.
What trait do you dislike in other people? Dishonesty.
What's your most embarrassing moment? I have had too many to mention. I’m quite short-sighted, so I quite often mistake people when I go up to talk to them. Do you have any nicknames? Only at school. One of my middle names is Agnes, so my classmates used to call me Baggy Agi. If you could invent a new law, what would it be? Free public transport would be available for everyone in London.
At work What other companies/organisations have you previously worked for? Virgin Megastore, Holland America, Expedia and GTA. If you could change one thing in the industry what would it be? To make customer service phone numbers on online travel sites more visible. What personal item do you have on your desk at work? A photo of my daughters which was taken for Father’s Day. What's the best thing about your job? Getting to meet people from all over the world.
18
What's a typical day like? It can change from day to day; if I am in the office, I’m submitting multiple reports for Rotana, following up with my accounts or talking to our individual properties to find ways to promote the Rotana brand in the UK. I am out of the office regularly on sales calls, conducting training or attending events so no day is ever the same! What's your favourite travel app? Trip Advisor. I always look to see what rating a hotel has on there before booking somewhere to stay. Who has been your inspiration in the travel industry? Richard Branson. He is always looking at how to do things better and has an exciting brand.
September 18 2015
What was the last email you received? A summer promotion at Beach Rotana, Abu Dhabi and Amwaj Rotana, Dubai. What skill are you most proud of? My networking skills, I know people in the travel industry from all over the world. What do you love about the travel industry? I used to work on the corporate travel side but I’m really happy to be back on the leisure side of the business. I love it because we are all in it together to make sure everyone has the best experience. We are all working for and with each other. What item do you always take with you when travelling? A phone charger - I would be lost without being able to call and text whenever I wanted.

caribbean eet and boost revenue sw s nt ie cl ur yo ep ke to w A sweet deal: Ho hes Resorts ac Be d an s al nd Sa s, le sa of by LEAH MARSHALL, head
W
HEN IT COMES to selling Caribbean holidays, it is important to remember that each island has unique characteristics, defined by its own culture, landscape and natural resources. With the lush beaches of Antigua; Grenada’s world renowned spices, Barbados’ rich history and the captivating volcanoes of Saint Lucia, the Caribbean truly has something for everyone.
The right deal In terms of choosing a Caribbean island for your client, find out what they want from their holiday, and tailor your recommendations around this. For example, if they are looking for a lively holiday filled with reggae and rhythm, then Jamaica would be a great fit. However, if they are looking to explore uninhabited islands and dive amongst gorgeous coral reefs, then the Out Islands of the Bahamas would be perfect. Many hotels in the Caribbean are allinclusive, which some clients can be wary of as it often conjures up images of buffet dining in the same restaurant day after day. If your client has misconceptions about the quality of food, beverages, service and facilities, advise them that if they pick a luxury resort company with a longestablished positive reputation, then this will be far from the truth. Luxury allinclusive resorts will offer a variety of dining options and serve premium brand drinks, so you can reassure them that they will not have to battle for the buffet or stomach vinegary wine!
www.travelbulletin.co.uk
Commission boosters
Value added extras
Some clients may also question whether staying at an all-inclusive allows them to really experience the local culture of a destination. It is important to highlight whether the resort you are selling offers excursions to local attractions and towns, as not only is it a great way to earn extra commission but it will also demonstrate to clients that staying at an all-inclusive doesn’t mean that you’re cut off from the local community. Some resorts may even run philanthropic programmes and offer guests the chance to give back to the community. For example, Sandals Resorts set up the Sandals Foundation, which helps local communities across the Caribbean through investment in education, healthcare and the environment. Another thing to flag to your client is the benefits of all-inclusives for keeping track of budgets. Inform them that following the initial spend on the holiday, they will have to pay for very little, thus eliminating daily worries about costs, budget and exchange rates. Many all-inclusive resorts will offer airport transfers, land and watersports equipment, as well as activities for kids – fees that can add up at a regular hotel or resort. With a huge assortment of activities on offer, guests can enjoy taking part in as many as they desire - all with expert tuition - and if they don’t enjoy them, they haven’t wasted any money! Something to emphasise to keen divers is that selecting a resort that includes unlimited diving for certified divers will definitely save them money.
A tip for clients looking to get married abroad is that some resort companies offer free weddings for couples that book a stay in a certain room category, or for a certain amount of time. As well as highlighting this cost-saving element (perhaps even compare the price of the holiday to the average £20k spend on a UK wedding), emphasise the fact that the package will usually include a wedding planner, making the experience as seamless and stress-free as possible. Once you have selected a suitable resort for your client, make sure that you show them the top suites first, as it is much easier to sell top down. Also, look into add-ons such as spa treatments, as this is a great way to earn extra commission. For couples celebrating a special event, such as a honeymoon, birthday or anniversary, pass this information onto the resort in case they can offer any special extras, such as a private candlelit dinner or specially decorated room. The more you know about the resorts and what each has to offer, the better you will be able to sell, so make the most of any online training programmes or training days offered by hoteliers. These tools really are in your interest - as well as helping you to earn the commission that you deserve, most resort companies will offer fantastic agent incentives with great prizes up for grabs, and even fam trip places so that you can experience the resorts for yourself!

A line-up of companies, including Virgin Holidays and Hayes & Jarvis, have added the island to their portfolio, with travel brands Thomson and First Choice announcing the introduction of weekly charter flights from Manchester from summer 2016, complementing the existing service to the island from Gatwick. This is in addition to the one billion dollars invested by the Aruba government in recent, current and future infrastructure projects across the island, including beach facilities and phase two of its ambitious linear park scheme, creating a ten-mile environmentally friendly area to be enjoyed by locals and tourists, stretching from a point close to the airport to the main hotel district. TRANSUN HAS added new departures from Aberdeen and Southampton to Santa’s Lapland this winter, meaning it now offers departures from the majority of the UK’s commercial airports. The company currently offers departures on its exclusive charter flights from smaller, regional airports such as Exeter, Norwich and Humberside, and the addition of Southampton and Aberdeen will now bring the total number of airports to 19. James Crawshaw, the company’s commercial manager, said: “We are pleased to offer departures from two new regional airports for 2015. Particularly on day breaks, a client’s proximity to their local airports is important as it cuts down time travelling on the morning of departure.” The Santa’s Lapland experience is available on a number of two-, three- or four-night stays along with daybreaks which include snowmobiling, husky sledding and a private meeting with Santa. Prices start from £489 per adult and £469 per child for daybreaks and £829 per adult and £749 per child for short breaks, which include flights, transfers and fullboard accommodation. Departures operate throughout November and December. To book or for more information call 01865-265200 or visit www.transun.co.uk/experience/santas-lapland
