Brits seek sunshine escape this Christmas reveals new survey from Cheapflights

Cover Pictures: Main - Samot

ALMOST HALF of Brits (44%) are searching for a sunshine escape this Christmas, according to research from Cheapflights.co.uk. But those looking for a ‘Brexmas break’ should get their sleigh bells on – the period during which airfares for travel over Christmas will be at their lowest is already looming. The research showed that the lure of warmer weather was the biggest motivator behind Brits choosing to abandon the traditional Christmas experience at home for a sunnier alternative abroad, with the US, Spain, Portugal, Thailand, Australia, UAE and South Africa all featuring in the top 107 of festive favourites. The survey also revealed that divorced and widowed Brits are far more likely to spend Christmas in the UK than couples and singles; London could be a ghost town

with 60% of Londoners ready to head overseas for Christmas, compared with just 32% of East Midlanders; and men are the least sentimental when it comes to spending Christmas at home with just 51% planning to stick around versus 60% of women. The company's data shows that British airports will be at their busiest on December 23 as travellers seek to get to their chosen destination before Christmas Eve, but those still looking to travel over the festive period must hurry: Cheapflights’ data also shows that those flights still on sale will be at their lowest average price over the weekend of November 5-6 - or around six weeks before the date of travel. continued from previous page research has shown that less than two thirds of Brits are happy at the prospect of spending Christmas at home this year and our search data indicates a 60% increase in demand for Christmas travel year-on-year, suggesting more Brits than ever are ready to swap sherry for sangria this festive season. “The Brexit vote and devalued pound may put a dampener on High Street Christmas spending this year, but seem to be less of a deterrent to travel than the prospect of a dreary Yuletide at home with the in-laws and the Strictly special. “A word of warning to those beginning their search though: our data shows that December 23 is already shaping up to be the busiest day for festive travel from the UK. Anyone thinking of heading away should book soon and make allowances for widespread disruption to public transport, to ensure their holiday is a Christmas cracker and not a festive flop.”

ABTA launches volunteer tourism guidelines to encourage high industry standards ABTA HAS launched the industry’s first comprehensive Volunteer Tourism Guidelines, designed to help travel businesses understand the issues and challenges involved, and work towards best practice in the programmes they offer. The guidelines have been developed in consultation with a wide range of organisations, including international travel industry and membership organisations, NGOs, charities, leading academics, inter-governmental organisations and tour operators working in the volunteer tourism sector. The guidelines aim to tackle bad practice and improve volunteer tourism standards throughout the travel industry. Volunteer tourism is a relatively new concept and has grown rapidly in recent years with more than 800 organisations worldwide now offering volunteer tourism experiences, and 1.6 million trips made per year. While often seen as a gap year activity between school and university, this only accounts for a third of all volunteering trips. The association's Volunteer Tourism Guidelines build on the wide range of existing guidance, with the aim of encouraging businesses to achieve high standards in the volunteering experiences they offer, resulting in positive impacts for target beneficiaries and ensuring that customers have a safe and enriching life experience. Members are encouraged to use the guidelines to assess whether the experiences they currently offer pose any risk and what they can do to work towards best practice. They available to members for free and for non-members to purchase from abta.com/shop

Monarch cancels all flights & holidays to Sharm El Sheikh MONARCH HAS cancelled all flight and holiday bookings to Sharm El Sheikh for the foreseeable future. With no indication from the Government as to when the airport will re-open to flights from the UK, the airline is cancelling all flight and holiday bookings for winter 2016/17 and there are now no plans for the destination to be part of the carrier's summer 2017 programme. Customers who have existing flight and holiday bookings can re-book to an alternative Monarch destination, free of charge, or obtain a full refund. Monarch Group chief executive, Andrew Swaffield, said: “Much hard work has been done by the UK and Egyptian Governments,

along with the travel industry, to improve safety measures at Sharm El Sheikh Airport and it is very disappointing that it remains closed. If and when the airport does reopen then we will assess whether we start flights and holidays again.”

New transit visa scheme from Qatar Airways & Qatar Tourism Authority QATAR AIRWAYS and Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) have announced that a new transit visa scheme, which allows passengers with layovers of five hours or more in Hamad International Airport to request a complimentary transit visa, has gone into effect. The new system will allow transiting passengers of all nationalities to enter Qatar for up to 96 hours in between flights. All visas are granted at the sole discretion of the Qatari Ministry of Interior. The initiative to introduce a free transit visa is the result of a collaboration between the airline and authority to position the country as a tourist-friendly destination and to attract more international visitors. Passengers can apply for their transit visa through any of the carrier's offices or online, and must have a confirmed ticket for a journey into Qatar, with a confirmed onward journey out of Qatar on a Qatar Airways-operated flight. To ensure passengers make the most of the new visa, the carrier has restructured its fares for international flights transiting through Hamad International Airport. This will allow passengers to have a free stopover in Doha without any additional charges to their ticket, either on the outbound or inbound journey. However, passengers travelling from the GCC and Middle East on return tickets will be able to take a stopover in Doha on their outbound journey only without additional charges. ELL IT’S been another busy and eventful month. I was truly devastated to hear the news of the fire at the historic Royal Clarence Hotel in Exeter. Watching the TV footage, I couldn’t believe that the hotel where I’d stayed only a few months earlier was disappearing before my eyes. To see the Royal Clarence, built in 1769 and credited as the first hotel in England, reduced to a charred and crumbling shell was very upsetting. Not only was it a charming and elegant hotel, but because of its central location on Cathedral Green opposite the world famous Cathedral, it was also an iconic and important heritage building much loved by locals and visitors alike. I certainly enjoyed my stay there and fond memories came flooding back of the times spent enjoying drinks with friends in the cosy bar, eating in the excellent restaurant and the wonderful view from our bedroom window. However, it was the warm, friendly atmosphere of the hotel, the outstanding service and the wonderful caring staff that I most remember. The waitress and chef went out of their way to ensure that our dietary requirements were fully met so we didn’t miss out on the excellent food in the hotel restaurant. The receptionist who, just finishing her shift, came out in her car to find us when we’d got lost in Exeter’s confusing one-way system and couldn’t find our way to the hotel. After finding us, she then drove back to the hotel so we could follow her in our car. Outstanding service that certainly was above and beyond! Thankfully no lives were lost in the fire which, given the speed and intensity of the blaze, was remarkable. I understand this was partly due the response of the hotel staff who evacuated everybody quickly and safely. Apart from feeling sad at losing such a lovely heritage hotel, I also feel so sorry for the hotel staff who suddenly find themselves without a job and not to mention the impact on local businesses affected by the loss of the hotel. However, there is some good news on the horizon as the hotel owner, Andrew Brownsword of Abode Hotels, has recently said that they intend to rebuild the hotel in light of its importance and preserving its heritage. In the meantime, the Royal Clarence will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved it.

New no-fly trips across Europe from Diamond Rail Holidays DIAMOND RAIL Holidays has released its new brochure for 2017 and, in response to the continuing growth in demand for no-fly holidays, has introduced ten new itineraries for next year, all of which include return travel from London by Eurostar and onward connections using Europe’s high-speed rail network. The new brochure features a number of city break options, as well as a collection of winter itineraries with opportunities to ride some of Europe’s charming little trains. Tim Fleming, the company's sales and business development manager, said: “More and more people are coming to realise that Europe’s network of high speed trains extends way beyond destinations served by the Eurostar, and that travel by rail offers a fantastic alternative to flying. "Travelling by rail in Europe is easy and affordable and passengers can quickly find themselves whisked off to the Italian Lakes, the Spanish Coast and beyond. Industry Insight by...

Insulting our intelligence? Colin O’Neill, business development director at Advantage, examines the growing influence of technology on the industry...

T

HE GROWING influence of technology in shaping and influencing our lives is a theme that I am returning to again in this month's article. However, the debate has now moved beyond mobile devices and the internet and into the realms of science fiction with robots, driverless cars and articial intelligence now the new centres of attention.

"To really contemplate a world devoid of human interaction really is the stuff of cinema" The scary prospect that machines could be capable of unsupported thought first really hit our consciousness with Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film masterpiece A Space Odyssey when a spaceship's computer begins to assume intelligence for sinister effect. However, here we are today facing the clear reality of science fact rather than fiction. Indeed, the march of the machine will feature prominently in the 2017 Advantage Conference next May in Provence, South of France, the programme details of which we have recently announced. With a theme of ‘Man & Machine’, the conference will of course take the opportunity of showcasing technology that is some way off in the future. However, the conference will focus firmly on two core aims:

12

November 11 2016

- To recognise that the harmonisation of human beings and technology is the end goal and attitudinally we should view emerging technology as an opportunity rather than as a threat. - To bring technology to the delegates that is not in the distant future, but now. Indeed, we have set ourselves a conference goal of having every delegate leave the conference with a commitment to implement at least one new technological innovation when they return home. It would be very difficult to realise that goal if the majority of technology on display is not currently available. The harmonisation of human beings and technology starts with the core premise that the human being always remain in control of the application and delivery of the machine. Despite technological developments, man will always remain a social animal and will always crave interaction with other people; after all, social platforms including Instagram and Facebook are only technological enablers brilliantly connecting one individual or group with another. To really contemplate a world devoid of human interaction really is the stuff of cinema. Let's be clear AI stands for Artificial Intelligence, implicit within which is the sentiment that artificial means not real and to suggest that a machine can ultimately replace humans is frankly insulting my intelligence. For those of you brave enough to face the future head on, then you ought to be with us in Provence next May.

Oman Air celebrates expansion and new daily flight from Manchester OMAN AIR delivered news of an ambitious programme of fleet and network expansion at this year’s WTM, alongside the announcement of a new daily flight from Manchester Airport to Muscat, commencing on May 1, 2017. This will be the second destination in the UK for the national airline and the only direct flight to Muscat from the north of England. The daily service, which is in addition to a double daily flight from Heathrow, will take seven-and-a-half-hours and will be operated by a Boeing 787-800 Dreamliner. In response to growing demand in Europe, frequencies have increased across many established routes and new international destinations have been added. The carrier’s fleet has also seen recent expansion; currently standing at 45 aircraft, at least two additional B737s are expected to be delivered before the end of the year and four more B787s are due for delivery over the next two years - and this number is expected to further increase to 70 by 2020. A new First Class cabin is also to be unveiled on the Boeing B787-900 Dreamliner aircraft, which will be delivered in 2018. Simon Cook, UK and Ireland country manager for the airline, said: “With a new sales team now in place we are going out to market directly to the trade. Oman Air is very well known in Oman but it's not necessarily that well known in the UK. "The trade is vitally important to us - they've got to be confident selling us so there will be fam trips, agent training and agent events all coming up, especially around Manchester.” For further information visit omanair.com

Jordan Tourism Board continues 'extraJORDANary' promotion into 2017 DR ABDUL RAZZAQ ARABIYAT, managing director of the Jordan Tourism Board, unveiled the latest tourism figures during an announcement on stand at this year’s WTM. Noting the 'overwhelming' response from the number of tourists received from the campaign, which was directed towards the UK market this year, Dr Arabiyat said: “We're looking for another extraJordanary campaign into 2017. With new hotel and attractions opening that cater specifically to the UK market, we are optimistic that 2017 will be promising.

If you look at the 2016 numbers from January up until now we have received 45,000 tourists from the UK with an increase of 5%, which is a good indicator.” In tandem with a strategy that focuses on experiential tourism, attention will also be given to the newly introduced Jordan Trail - a 650km trek across the country that runs through Petra, Dana, the Dead Sea and Um Qais, crossing 52 villages and promising a journey of experiences and adventure. Touching on aspects of safety within the destination, Dr Arabiyat said:

“We’ve proved that Jordan offers an oasis of peace and is a very calm and beautiful destination. The increase in the numbers of tourists is an indicator that Jordan has performed well in terms of security and the messages portrayed of Jordan in the media are now very positive. "Testimonials from tourists are also helping, and we are seeing families visiting Petra, Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea. Above all, word of mouth from tourists is that their experiences in Jordan have been safe and to come and experience Jordan as a tourism destination.”

THE PHILIPPINES Department of Tourism’s (PDOT) tourism minister, Secretary Wanda T. Corazon addressed WTM attendees at a press conference held earlier this week, where the achievements and campaigns of PDOT’s largest travel trade partners in the UK including Philippine Airlines, STA Travel, Expedia and Singapore Airlines were addressed. Philippine Airlines outlined its line-up of future activities including Bristol and Cardiff selling missions as well as its partnership campaign with Expedia. The carrier is currently the only airline providing direct access to Manila from London and rest of Europe and it recently upgraded its flight frequency from five times weekly to a daily service to cater to growing demand. STA Travel presented its global partnership campaign in conjunction with the Philippines. Last year’s campaign yielded 2,200 visitors from the UK and more than 7,000 in key European and Australian markets, and this year’s campaign has been expanded to reach a wider audience and will be promoted across more platforms and activities by STA. Meanwhile, Kathryn Alker, business development manager - UK and Ireland at Expedia outlined the company’s upcoming campaign which will run for the month of December. She also announced that the company’s UK site generated around 18,000 bookings to the Philippines last year.

Asian market expansion from ONYX Hospitality Group THAILAND’S ONYX Hospitality Group is celebrating a period of expansion across its hotel brands, with new ventures in Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Malaysia, Laos and China. The company will make its first foray into the Vietnam market when OZO Hoi An opens its doors in late 2017. The beachfront resort in the New Hoi An City area will be the largest OZO so far, with 364 rooms. Following the opening of its first hotels in 2013, the OZO brand is now available in four locations - Hong Kong; Koh Samui in Thailand; and Colombo and Kandy in Sri Lanka. There are several OZO hotels in the development pipeline, in locations such as Penang and Johor Bahru in Malaysia, and the southern Chinese city of Xiamen. The company operates four hotel brands – Saffron, Amari, Shama and OZO – across the Indian Ocean, Arabian Gulf and AsiaPacific regions. Also scheduled for an early 2017 opening, Amari Galle will be the first Amari in Sri Lanka and the third ONYX property in the country overall, adding to the already established OZO Kandy Sri Lanka and OZO Colombo Sri Lanka. Another first for the group, Amari Yangshuo Guilin will open as the first Amari in China in the second quarter of 2017. The hotel will be next to one of the most historical streets of downtown Yangshuo, and offer easy access to the area’s scenic attractions including peaks, rivers, caves and temples. These key new openings set ONYX on its way to achieving its strategic goal of operating 81 properties by 2018. The company’s executive vice president chief commercial officer, Duncan Webb, said: “The big message for this year’s show

travelbulletin.co.uk

is that we are continuing expanding and meeting our objectives. We currently have 41 operating hotels and 26 under development across three brands in six countries. In the next two years we will be in nine countries. “Our message to agents is that we will be able to offer them the service they’ve come to expect across a broader range of destinations. We have a dedicated training representative for agents to contact to learn more and next year our plans include more video shoots with short introductions to give agents a flavour of what we have to offer.” Agents are encouraged to visit the stand at AS430 to find out more details about the new openings as well as fam trip and training opportunities. Ready to update agents on the company’s expansion developments are Jessica Flood and Duncan Webb from ONYX.

SERBIA HAS become one of the fastest growing destinations in Europe for tourism, with UK visitor arrivals in the first nine months of 2016 up by 11% compared to the same period last year. The newly appointed director of the National Tourism Organisation of Serbia, Marija Labovic, was on stand to outline her vision for the UK market next year. She said: “Where the UK market is concerned it was, still is and will be a very important market for us. There is a growth of 11% but we believe it can be even greater, which is why for the duration of 2017 we will have a greater presence within the UK travel trade, increasing our brand and destination awareness. When we say Serbia we want tourism to be the first thing that comes to mind.” Also announced at WTM was the news that in 2021, Serbia’s second largest city, Novi Sad will become the European Capital of Culture; the first city to be awarded the accolade outside of the EU. Labovic said: “Novi Sad’s winning bid for the European Capital of Culture will provide the springboard to capitalise on the many opportunities for visitors to not only explore and experience what Novi Sad has to offer, but will play an important role in motivating travellers to travel further afield in Serbia to explore what the rest of the country has to offer.”
