Ferry industry launches new standard to improve reservation systems connectivity THE MAJOR European operators - Stena Line, DFDS, P&O Ferries, Viking Line, Tallink/Silja Line, Irish Ferries, Brittany Ferries and Color Line - have formed The FerryGateway Association to proactively work together to improve the sales and distribution of ferry travel. Its first step is the launch of a new systems communications standard for agents and ferry operators. Hans Björkborg, the association's managing director, said: "In Northern Europe alone 125 million passengers travel annually on ferries and online sales between agents and ferry operators have been growing fast. Until now system connections have been supported by outdated and non-standardised solutions, the new FerryGateway standard is set to change this. The main advantage with the new FerryGateway xml-based communication standard is that a wider range of products and services can be offered for sale. “We will also be able to better meet our customers’ expectations by being able to offer the full range of ferry products and services. By making selling ferry travelling both easier and more attractive, we expect to see growing interest from a wide range of B2B partner organisations.” Besides increasing sales, the new standard also aims to improve efficiency and lower costs, as agents and operators will only have to maintain one standardised way of system communication. The standard will be open for all registered users and will be accessible via the www.ferrygateway.org website.
Automated flight update tweets for London City Airport passengers LONDON CITY AIRPORT(LCY) has launched a new service offering automated flight updates to passengers via social media. A customer can tweet their flight number to @LCYflightinfo on the day of travel to receive individual, real-time messages with information such as departure times and boarding gate numbers. The new service will be supplementary to the airport’s existing Twitter feed @londoncityair – which will continue to be the social face of LCY, engaging with customers and providing news and customer service information. LCY is the first airport in Europe to introduce the technology from BizTweet, developed by TIC (Technology Integration Consultancy). The system ensures the passenger receives a relevant and personalised automatic communication.

newsbulletin Scots go further for staycations THE LATEST statistics from Holidaycottages.co.uk reveal that Scots travel the furthest for 'staycations' within mainland UK. On average, customers from Scotland travel almost 300 miles to reach their holiday cottage, with holidaymakers from the South West covering 127 miles. For short breaks, Scots also travel further according to the research, covering on average 56 miles more than customers in the South West. The company’s managing director, James Morris, said: “The variation on offer in the UK means that people don’t need to travel thousands of miles to get to a stunning holiday destination. They can enjoy the same relaxation, sightseeing and holiday experience within a few hours of their home.” The average distance travelled for all UK holidaymakers has increased from 190 miles in 2013 to 225 miles in 2015, a rise of almost 20%, with the company attributing low petrol prices as a possible cause.

New luxury river cruiser in Myanmar set for January launch STRAND CRUISE, a new luxury river cruiser on Myanmar’s Ayeyarwady River, is set to commence operations in January 2016. The cruise, which is being created by the people behind the Strand Hotel – a Yangon landmark since 1901 - will offer 27 cabin suites and all the features passengers would expect from a Strand product - from butler service and gourmet a la carte cuisine, to signature elements celebrating the golden age of the Strand as a meeting place for explorers and raconteurs, such as traditional Strand cocktails in the lounge bar and afternoon tea on deck. The ship will feature two Strand suites located at the front of the ship with external terrace areas. Passengers booking one of the two suites will have added extras included in their rate, including a one-hour spa treatment of their choice, a night at The Strand Hotel pre- or post- cruise
and private airport transfers. All cabins will feature floor to ceiling ‘Juliet’ balconies with opening windows. The crew’s knowledge and experience of Myanmar means that they have been able to negotiate access to many private jetties, reducing the time spent on land transport transferring between onshore tours. For example, one of the highlights includes an exclusive mooring overnight at Ava allowing passengers access to the temple of Maha Aungmye Bonzan after the crowds have departed. The Strand Cruise will commence its regular schedule of three- and four-night sailings between Bagan and Mandalay in early January 2016. A lead in low season price for the three-night journey between Mandalay
and Bagan is from US$1,782 per person based on double occupancy. A special launch offer is available for sailings from January to March 2016 of 20% off the high season rate. During this time, the three-night journey between Mandalay and Bagan leads in at $2,592 (from US$3,240) per person based on double occupancy. For further information see www.thestrandcruise.com

MSC Cruises adds flexibility with revamped group booking policy MSC CRUISES is transforming its group booking policy, giving travel agents more time to market and sell cabins without a deposit. Retailers will now be able to hold options for up to 12 weeks before making a financial commitment while payment terms have been relaxed so balances can be paid in staggered steps up to 15 days before departure. Additionally, group bookings now start at ten cabins (previously 15) with no restriction on the maximum group size. The line's head of sales UK & Ireland, Janet Parton, said: “The new group policy is a great example of our Travel Agent Advisory Board in action. Our agent partners have provided fantastic feedback about how they sell groups and what they need from a cruise line. We have worked
hard to make the new policy travel agent friendly and I am sure they will love the changes. “Selling groups offers a brilliant opportunity for agents and for us. In the past our approach was a little too prescriptive, so we have tried to remove as many barriers as possible. By becoming more flexible we hope agents will see us as the ‘go-to’ cruise line for groups.” Other changes include fixed rates until the end of the option; a 15% deposit once the booking is confirmed; and commission – for both cruise and add-ons – as per the individual agent’s agreement. Agents interested in booking groups should contact their existing account manager or email groups@msccruises.co.uk

ell, it’s certainly been a memorable summer so far and I’m not just talking about the fabulous weather we’ve been having. The recent terrorist attack on tourists in Tunisia with the tragic loss of lives has shocked and saddened us all, and has once again highlighted safety issues for travellers. The current Greek debt crisis has also been causing concerns of a different kind for travellers.
W
My local newspaper called me unexpectedly last week to ask if I could offer any advice to their readers with regard to these particular issues. As we have not had any negative feedback from holidaymakers returning from Greece, I suppose I was quite positive in my comments about the effects of the financial situation there. However, I was surprised and I have to say somewhat amused when I saw the headline in the paper a couple of days later - 'Chelmsford travel agent reassures Essex' - I wasn’t expecting that! I’m working on a mixed bag of enquiries at the moment which include a Cunard cruise to the US, a multi-centre trip to Canada and an enquiry for a large family group attending a wedding in Spain next year. The group booking is proving quite difficult because not only am I trying to find a suitable hotel to match everyone’s budget, but I’m also looking for rooms large enough to accommodate families with two and three young children, and they seem to be in short supply. There just seems to be no end to passengers doing daft things to avoid extra airline charges. Did you read the recent report in the press about the young 'boy band' singer who collapsed from heat exhaustion on a flight? He had decided to put on 12 layers of clothes rather than paying a £45 excess baggage charge. The extra layers consisted of six t-shirts, four jumpers, three pairs of jeans, two sweatpants, two jackets and two hats. Fortunately he was OK but the experience really gave him a scare as it could have been fatal. I’m just surprised he wasn’t stopped at security before he boarded the plane wearing all that bulky clothing - particularly in the middle of summer, aren’t you?

Industry Insight by... e l i t e TRAVEL GROUP
Industry news and views from Neil Basnett, chief executive of the Elite Travel Group
lthough all of us involved in the travel industry have had to cope with many dire situations throughout the years many of which have been as a result of terrorism, none of us could surely ever have anticipated the recent tragic events that took place in Sousse in Tunisia. For a country that is so heavily reliant upon tourism, the consequences for the industry and all those employed in it in Tunisia will prove to be horrendous: how on earth can these revolting people who carry out such atrocities against perfectly innocent people hope to persuade others to be more welcoming of their ‘cause’ let alone even accepting that they have one in the first place?
A
Whenever there are incidents of this nature, this is where ABTA proves its worth to all those who belong to the often maligned association. They have kept all of their members up-to-date at all times of the day with developments throughout the whole sorry saga to the extent that clients can be given accurate information to assist them with their plans. I also have to say how impressed I have been with the way that Thomas Cook has kept its business partners continually aware of how their own clients’ bookings have been and will be affected, meaning that agents can provide their clients with accurate advice. This again highlights the benefits of travellers booking their holidays through ABTA Travel Agents and in turn ATOL-bonded tour operators as those people out there booking it all themselves are left entirely on their own to sort out their arrangements. These travellers always argue that it is cheaper to cut out the travel agent and tour operator but when things go seriously awry, they miss out on the all-round expertise offered by the industry to either get them home or rebook a holiday with little hassle. Serves them right many will say, but this is another opportunity for ABTA and the CAA to get this simple message across. I don’t know about you but I am now absolutely bored rigid with the situation in Greece, which should to all intents and purposes result in them leaving the Euro once and for all. How many more deadlines are they going to be given and how many more times are they going to default on their payments to the European Central Bank and to the International Monetary Fund? How can it make commercial common sense for these www.travelbulletin.co.uk
"I am now absolutely bored rigid with the situation in Greece, which should to all intents and purposes result in them leaving the Euro..." institutions to keep lending them even more money and bailing them out with funds merely to be used to pay back money that they were already owing? No bank would ever take such action for individual businesses and there seems to have been a complete lack of common sense amongst the decision-makers. What further proof do we need to have been given in this country that our politicians took absolutely the right decision for this country never to have been swallowed up into this currency? That is why I was so stunned to read recent comments from Richard Branson in which he stated that this country should have gone into the single currency! The deluded concept of the Euro being suitable for all economies in Europe always was fundamentally flawed and once the inevitable finally happens and there is a Grexit, then logic states that it will only be a matter of time before Spain, Italy and Portugal follow – all countries heavily reliant upon tourism. Once they have their own currencies back, then the predictions are that holidays would become even more competitively priced than they now are. The countries would have their own identities back and they would also have to take more responsibility for their own actions without having the supporting cushion of the ECB and the IMF. Learned experts have advised travellers to Greece to ensure that they take sufficient euros in cash to sustain them for the duration of the holiday in case the situation deteriorates even further. Most travel insurance policies only cover cash up to around £200 so will they be sympathetic when claims start flooding in for stolen cash in large quantities? “I was only doing what Chancellor Osborne had advised us to do”, will be the retort! Mark Spivey Director of International Sales, Maritim Hotels At home
At play
What's your favourite household gadget? Hmm...Bose Wi-Fi Radio so I can listen to any station in the world – how things have changed!
Where would you most like to visit and why? Bhutan – I have just heard so much about this place I want to go! I would like to see more of Japan, South Korea, Chile and Argentina.
What's a typical weekend for you like? Friday night football – five or six-a-side with friends in the Wimbledon Park area. Saturday trying to learn to walk again after football with the dog, evening with family and friends, taxi driver for daughter! Sunday out into Surrey for a good walk and Sunday lunch with family.
What's your favourite (non-work related) website? www.bbc.co.uk – it’s a must when you are travelling all over the world.
What's your guilty pleasure? Anything sweet – and the odd Cusquena beer (Peruvian beer). What do you do to relax? Football on Friday is welcome relaxation but the walking does powers to switch off. What's your favourite movie? The Great Escape (funny that, working for a German company – I even had it as my mobile phone tune and it was funny when it went off in HQ in Germany with all my German colleagues). It is just a superb film - I still hope the bike makes it over the fence every time!
What trait do you dislike in other people? I don’t like people who cannot be straight in any situation – I respect people who call a spade a spade. What is your best quality? Probably being able to laugh at myself. Installing that work is a key part of life that has to be fun, knowing that when hard work is required we get on with it. Also, finding time to be available for all. What's your most embarrassing moment? I once visited clients who lived on a farm and when leaving let the greyhound escape through the door (I was holding the door wide open) while watching ‘Mick the Miller’ taking the chicken out – I think the dog had been waiting for his chance and I duly obliged. Running in a suit with black
shoes over a muddy field trying to catch the greyhound was probably a highlight. The dog smiled at me and licked his mouth full of feathers. Years later I was in a meeting in New York and I answered my mobile phone to hear 70 travel agents at the Munich Beer Festival singing ‘Spivey killed the chicken na na na!’ The team who took the travel agents to Munich were duly made to pay for the phone bill, make me coffee for a month and do the washing up in the office – hard labour! Do you have any nicknames? Where do we start? Mini Churchill, Spider (from school days) and Marky. If you could invent a new law, what would it be? What you pay into the system on tax in your working life that pending on the amounts, this is taken into account for later. If you work 40 years paying into the system you should get a far better pension than someone who has not or been taxed less. It’s a similar system as in Germany, so you get a pension weighted to the earnings and payments you made in. Also, taxation and hidden charges on UK airline seats...why are we still paying for kerosene charges – a family of four going to the USA pays nearly £1K in charges in Economy – it is an absolute joke and needs to be addressed.
At work What other companies/organisations have you previously worked for? Steigenberger Hotels, Leading Hotels of the World plus individual five-star properties in Germany, Switzerland, USA, France and Italy. If you could change one thing in the industry what would it be? We need to encourage young people to embrace the industry and give them the platforms to use their education and our knowledge to enhance and improve a better travel future. What personal item do you have on your desk at work? I have a picture of our old VW beetle (red 1302 model) that is parked in the middle of the Peruvian desert – it still runs and looks like new although it has 68,000km on the clock and is 40 years old! Also have pictures of my wife and daughter. Tell us a story I was once standing at Frankfurt security when a lady that was going through was visibly upset as she had left her coat in the hotel. I asked which hotel and
18
July 17 2015
she said Maritim Frankfurt – I rang the concierge Ralf and told him the problem while we waited at the gate. A colleague was coming over to London the next day and brought the coat. Turns out the lady is very senior in the banking world and she still sends me a bottle of Champagne every birthday. When she stays with us, Ralf always leaves a note in her room from me saying ‘Don’t forget your coat!’ – it’s these small things that make our job so different. Who has been your inspiration in the travel industry? There are a few! I like people that have made a real attempt to make a change. Freddie Laker for taking on the elite airlines and Charles Forte when he started up the hotel chain from humble beginnings. What skill are you most proud of? Languages and having worked in all the different sales positions relevant to hotel operations - from front office to deputy GM in five-star luxury hotels. What do you love about the travel industry? The people. Being able to be in an industry that has changed a lot but still involves people getting on together.

Cypriot morning meals get greener with new initiative supported by CTO SUPPORTED by the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO), the Travel Foundation of the UK and the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative, a new breakfast programme aims to ensure that all parts of the community benefit from tourism to the island. Participating hotels will serve a traditional Cypriot breakfast buffet with locally sourced ingredients. The scheme, which started regionally last year has now been rolled out nationally and aims to ensure that all parts of the community benefit from tourism to the island. From nutritional salads of olives, tomatoes and cucumbers to more indulgent fayre such as fried halloumi, eggs and lountza (a delicious smoked pork). All ingredients for the breakfast will be locally sourced to re-invigorate the most important meal of the day in a sustainable way. As part of the initiative, diners can also bring the taste of Cyprus back to Britain with the help of handy recipes on the website. The sustainable breakfast drive follows a
number of initiatives that show Cyprus’ commitment to sustainability in their tourism. The CTO is the first tourist board to introduce mandatory sustainability standards for its hotels. In order to comply, they must meet targets on waste production, energy saving and source goods locally. While major hotels and resorts are now required to meet these standards, the island has also seen a growth in agrotourism properties, which are becoming increasingly popular. What's that strange smell? asks John Guinn as he explores Limassol's carnival... John Guinn is the host of the weekly travel show on UK Health Radio. t home 'Stinky Thursday' is the day before my bath day. In Cyprus, however, it is part of the Limassol Carnival. This festival is a period of self-indulgence before the fasting and moderation of Lent, whereas my bath is just a period involving turpentine and a stiff brush. The Cypriot Stinky Thursday got its name from the smell of grilled or spit-roast lamb and pork being cooked throughout the city. The ten-day festival starts on the Thursday of Kreatini (meat week), which marks the week countdown to Lent when devout Orthodox Cypriots do not eat meat. The Limassol Carnival was reintroduced around 120 years ago and has many influences. One major influence is from the Venetians, who ruled Cyprus in the 15th and 16th centuries and another is the Cypriot need for satire - very important during the carnival. A recent target was the German chancellor Angela Merkel, who had a gigantic papier-mâché effigy made in her honour. As well as the smell of the cooked meat, there is also the sound of musicians and the spectacle of local dancers cutting shapes in the streets. Those who are reluctant to take part may be more inclined to dance in the streets once the Serenaders' Parade is underway. This is held on the last Saturday of the carnival when revellers are plied with local wines to help to encourage them to join in. Vegetarians aren’t left out of the excess food and jollities. The Sunday of the second week of the festival is Tyrini (cheese week). This is when the dietary focus is on cheese and other dairy products. Personally I think Stinky Thursday is more apt for a cheese week, especially if my dad has eaten the cheese… During the carnival many hotels organise fancy dress parties, so this probably isn’t the time to visit the area if you are looking for some R&R. The festivities come to the end with the Grand Carnival Parade and in 2016 this takes place on Sunday, 13th March. Most of the festival activities are free. mexico GET THE MOST FROM YOUR CLIENTS’ HOLIDAYS BY BEING IN THE KNOW ON WHAT’S TRENDING by FIONA BOSS, business development manager and UK sales support, Hard Rock Hotels’ All Inclusive Collection MEXICO HAS become one of the most up and coming trending destinations in the past couple of years and it’s easy to see why with so many choices in and away from your resort. Options range from beaches, wonders of the world, nightlife and adventure, to eco-tourism, golf, spa, swimming with dolphins, delicious dining or just simply relaxing. Your clients could be seeking a romantic break, heading to a wedding, going on honeymoon or taking a group or family holiday; whatever the occasion, Mexico certainly delivers. And getting there is so easy, with regional departures from all over the UK, including Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle and even Stansted. This summer you can choose from charter flights with Thomson and Thomas Cook or scheduled flights from Gatwick with British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.
BEACHES & SEAS OF MEXICO You will find some of the best beaches in the Caribbean in Mexico, with most of the resort areas offering miles of white sandy beaches with crystal turquoise seas. Running from Cancun to Belize is the Great Mesoamerican Reef, offering the most amazing diving experiences. Other watersports include snorkelling, deep sea fishing and sailing - and you will not be able to believe your eyes with a visit to the Underwater Museum in Cancun which features more than 470 sculptures!
MAYAN HISTORY Mexico has many historic and archaeological sites including one of the seven new ‘Wonders of the World’ Chichen Itza. Clients can enjoy a range of cultural days out including trips to Coba, El Rey, Uxmal, Xcaret, Xel-Ha and Tulum,

a walled city and port built on the Yucatan Peninsula on 12m-tall cliffs - the only archaeological site on the coast.
ADRENALINE JUNKIES & FAMILY FUN For a great day out, suggest your clients head to Xplor, where they can swim in underwater stalactite rivers and caves. Other options include travel by raft, flying through the jungle on 3.8km zip-lines or heading off on their own amphibious vehicle, through jungles, crossing suspended bridges and going underground into mysterious caverns and caves. For a memorable and unique experience, suggest families book an interactive swim with dolphins so they can learn more about these wonderful creatures. It’s also worth knowing that Ultimate Playtime Packages can be pre-purchased by families staying at the Hard Rock Hotel AIC, where guests can check-in and receive nappies, baby food, sterilizers and several hours of baby-sitting.
DINING…AND TEQUILA Mexico has a very diverse range of dining on offer due to its location, from local traditional Mexican fare, to Caribbean, Brazilian, Argentinean, Japanese, French and Italian. As we all know the local tipple is Tequila, which is made from the Blue Agave plant and looks rather like a pineapple. How do you like yours - shots, Tequila Sunrise, Margarita? Why not suggest your clients try the Tequila tasting experience at Hard Rock Hotel Cancun (using their resort credit!) WE LIKE TO PARTY… Cancun is renowned for its vibrant nightlife and in downtown Cancun you can find the party of all parties every night with plenty to keep you going until morning! Coco Bongo’s is a must for
everyone, where you will be entertained by Cirque du Soleil style acts, tribute bands and top DJs. Playa Del Carmen in the Riviera Maya area also offers fantastic nightlife maybe not quite on the same scale as Cancun – and visitors can take a stroll down 5th Avenue, where fantastic local and fine dining restaurants can be found, along with an array of bars, some with live music and dancing, nightclubs and a Coco Bongos! Another worthwhile option is to venture into Club Heaven nightclub at Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya with its two Jacuzzis and swimming pool… that’s how we rock!
WHERE TO STAY You will find a wide variety of hotels and resorts to suit every taste and budget in Mexico - from ultra swanky five-star resorts to small boutique hotels and everything else in between. All-inclusive hotels feature widely in Mexico with a budget and style for all tastes. Being a ‘Rock Chic’ myself, I would of course recommend one of the three all-inclusive Hard Rock Hotels found in Mexico - Hard Rock Hotel Cancun, Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya and Hard Rock Hotel Vallarta. All offer a complete all-day, allnight, all-included experience, bringing the ultimate music vibe to life and invoking a sense of nostalgia for guests of all ages. Show-stopping amenities are redefining the all-inclusive resort experience, with unmatched luxury accommodation, in-room hydro tubs, fine dining, golf, top-shelf drinks, 24-hour room service, authentic music memorabilia, lively evening entertainment, expansive pools with swim up bars, plus some of the largest spas in the Caribbean.

Thai tourism puts focus on quality in new marketing campaign FINALISING ITS marketing plan for 2016, The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is focusing on promoting the region as a ‘Quality Leisure Destination through Thainess’. The new strategy indicates an end to decades of a quantity focus, as measured by visitor arrivals, and a shift to quality as measured by visitor expenditure, average length of stay and the overall quality of the visitor experience. H.E. Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, Minister of Tourism and Sports, is calling on the industry to work on the principles of the three ‘R’s - Restructure, Rebalance and Reposition. Targets for 2016, as measured entirely in revenue earnings, are up by 8% over the projected earnings for this year, while international and domestic tourism are both up by 8% over the same period. Juthaporn Rerngronasa, acting governor of TAT, said: “This plan marks the opening of a new chapter for Thai tourism. It is based on the fact that there is more than adequate accessibility to Thailand via excellent air, road and sea connections, as well as smooth facilitation that allows visa-free or visa-on-arrival access for citizens from 68 countries and territories.” The 2016 strategy will retain the Amazing Thailand branding logo as well as the ‘Thainess’ identity; concentrate on niche markets such as golfers, weddings and honeymoons, health and wellness visitors and ‘halal tourism’ for Muslim visitors; offer increased focus on female travellers; and put a more balanced emphasis on growing the domestic market.
