Elite Travel Group members warned to ‘act now’ on data protection regulations IN A panel discussion at the Elite Travel Group’s annual conference, which was held last weekend in Calvia, Mallorca, the issues surrounding the new data protection regulations were raised, with many agents confused on what needs to be done. Simon Bunce, director of legal affairs at ABTA, told agents to ‘keep calm’ over the new regulations, which come into force in May next year, but warned that they should start thinking about how they are going to comply. He said: “Don’t panic about the changes; nothing massive is going to happen on 18th May next year. However,

you do need to start thinking how you are going to get ready for May because if you get hacked or a customer has an issue on the data you have on them– and the Independent Commissioner’s Office (ICO) sees that you haven’t taken any steps to try and comply, then you will have a problem.” Bunce advised agents to check its model privacy guide - available on its website – as a starting point on how to prepare for the change. The guide offers a simple spreadsheet, breaking down the data into columns such as what data is held, who it is shared with and what security surrounds the data. He said: “If you can fill in the spreadsheet with no issues, then you’re heading in the right direction, but if there are gaps in it, for example, when it asks how long you keep the data for – and you’re answering ‘forever’, then you will need to start changing your systems. “The regulation is about giving consumers more information about what companies are doing with their data. The aim of the ICO is what they call ‘surprise

continued from previous page minimization’, meaning that your clients should not be surprised about what you are doing with the information you hold on them. “So whenever you take the data from a client, make sure you tell them what you are doing with it and why.” According to Bunce, the real headache for agents is the information held on emails and he warned attendees that even if they delete an email – and then delete it from the trash – it still goes somewhere, and that companies needed to think about how they store and file their data. He said: “It is up to agencies to ensure that the information they have deleted is gone for good. The really tricky bit is how you manage those emails. An auto-deleting tool for emails could become a necessity, as well as outsourcing this task to an IT company. “The good thing about this new directive is that your third party IT suppliers are also liable to comply with the new regulations, so you can start working this into your contracts with them.”

Delegates also learned that standards of data protection differ in countries outside of the European Union. So, for example, an agent sending their client’s details to a hotel in South Africa isn’t responsible for what happens to that data at the other end. They are obliged to tell their clients that they are sending the information on, but what that company then does with the data isn’t their responsibility. Bunce said: “Your privacy statement should state something along the lines of ‘standards of security around data differ once you get outside the EU’ – and the customer will understand this. As long as you’ve done what you’re supposed to do, you’ll be okay. “With regards to direct marketing, as long as you state in your privacy statement something along the lines of ‘if you go on holiday with us we will send you offers we think you may be interested in’ and as long as you give them a very clear way of opting out of this – for example a clear ‘Unsubscribe’ button on your emails, then I am confident that you can market to your clients.” (Conference update – page 16)

More than half of Brits would refer travel brand to a friend/family NEW RESEARCH reveals what motivates UK consumers to refer brands to friends and family, which sectors and brands are most referable, and which qualities a brand should possess to be referred. According to the survey results from Mention Me, UK consumers value the opinion of a friend or family member most with 41% of those questioned put off referring a brand if they’d been told not to shop there, compared to only 36% put off by negative press or social media coverage. Of those questioned, people would trust a friend (50%) slightly more than a partner or spouse (46%), and only marginally fewer people (21%) would trust an online review from the public than their parents at 23%. Top travel brands people have or would consider referring are Virgin Airways (46%), Centre Parks (40%) and BA (48%). CEO of Mention Me, Andy Cockburn, said: “This research reveals that brands need to really focus on understanding what drives and inspires their customers to want to share and refer experiences - central for the travel sector - and that it’s not all just about offering the biggest discount.”

A SHORE THING...Premier Holidays took a group of Advantage travel agents to Guernsey on a fam trip to enjoy a host of activities including a walking tour of St Peter Port with a local guide, a boat trip to Herm island and an afternoon at one of Guernsey’s new attractions – the Pirate Bay Adventure Golf based at St Pierre Park hotel. The group also did a number of site inspections and enjoyed a lunch hosted by Visit Guernsey. Advantage offers Profit Protection Plan guidance for members ADVANTAGE TRAVEL Partnership has published a 12-page Profit Protection Plan for its members – a direct reaction to the upcoming change in law that will require retailers to absorb charges for transactions made by credit and debit card. Advantage’s guidance paper is designed to give agents helpful support, advice and practical solutions in specific areas including: operational changes, money-saving opportunities and increasing income to protect their businesses ahead of the EU’s Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2), which comes into force on January 13, 2018. The consortium's group commercial director, Paula Lacey, said: “We hope our members find the profit protection guidance helpful and insightful and it inspires them to take steps to protect their businesses ahead of PSD2 coming into force. “We cannot emphasise enough the significance of PSD2 and how taking action now can help lessen the impact it will have on business. The Advantage membership is broad and diverse and one size does not fit all and there is no single ‘silver bullet’ solution but by publishing the guidance paper we are offering some practical advice to help our members understand the impact and mitigate the additional costs resulting from the new legislation.” In the first instance Advantage members are advised, if they have not worked it out already, to calculate the annual amount paid in card payment merchant fees and the resulting percentage of profit. Advantage is recommending an over-estimation of the 2016/17 merchant fees as it is predicted that consumers will increase card payment usage post abolition of card payment surcharges. The consortium has developed a simple downloadable calculator tool so the potential cost to a members’ business can be calculated using total turnover by card type and merchant rates. Corporate and commercial payment cards are not included under the new law, which means Advantage business travel members will be less affected by PSD2, unless they also accept clients personal credit and debit card for payments. The consortium has offered its support to ABTA in its government lobbying campaign to reduce the handling fee charged by a customer’s card company to the agent’s merchant acquirer. Advantage managing director, Julia Lo Bue-Said, has urged travel companies to assist ABTA by providing evidence of the detrimental effect on businesses, which they require ahead of a statutory review currently set for 2019. As widely reported, the major impact on members’ businesses is that they will no longer be able to pass on payment surcharges to their customers, for transactions made by credit or debit card, including those made by Mastercard, Visa, Amex, PayPal and Apple Pay. To combat the effect of PSD2 on an agency balance sheet, members are encouraged to create their own personalised action plan to assess the potential impact and devise counteractive strategies before the directive comes into effect.

I

F YOU want peace, quiet and tranquillity in beautiful surroundings with wonderful food then you must visit Casale Panayiotis Hotel & Spa in Kalopanayiotis in Cyprus’ Troodos Mountains. It is perfect for anyone wanting to destress, chill out and perhaps do some walking. I recently met Chris Anastassiou who founded the spa there, and he has great ideas for making it unique with alternative therapies. The staff can recommend all sorts of things too - from visiting Mr Doros, the local beekeeper, who will show you some of his bees and honeycombs to visiting a traditional sweets workshop - or my favourite, a Halloumi-making workshop! There are various churches and even a UNESCO heritage monastery, a chapel and museum, and the man in charge is full of interesting information as to how many of the things were found. You can even hire bikes! Casale Panayiotis is not like your normal hotels where accommodation is all together. Here, rooms are on different levels on the hillside and have been adapted from the old houses and modernised with a lounge area and TV, tea/coffee a fridge and a balcony or terrace. The hotel also offers several restaurants with lovely food and a nice area for sitting outside in comfortable chairs and settees - wonderful for just relaxing. It is possible to hold a conference here as well, and there are plans for building a swimming pool. We had a great tour of the village and we also visited the Orchard featuring home-grown fruits. John Papadouris, the owner and who is responsible for all the innovative renovations, spent some time with us chatting about how other villages are going to follow his ideas. I know many of you will want to know if the cats and dogs were looked after - they were, and it was nice not to see thin cats! The hotel has put a policy in place to look after them and the village has also formed a group to look after the welfare of cats and dogs. Some of the team have already adopted strays and further developments include a local feeding programme in certain areas of the village. Thank you Sandra Bruce for asking me on this wonderful and informative trip - and thank you Freda for your kind hospitality. This truly was a wonderful oasis of peace, tranquillity and excellent food. ‘One thing you can’t recycle is wasted time’ and ‘Your mind is like a parachute, it functions only when open’.

Emerald Waterways marks christening of third Star-Ship, Liberte, in Lyon

Thomson & First Choice announce increased capacity for winter THOMSON AND First Choice have announced increased capacity to the Canaries and Lapland in response to customer demand for winter holidays, as well as an extra 250,000 extra seats for summer 2018. Holidaymakers looking to visit the Canaries this halfterm and Christmas will have more flights to choose from. Additional seats will be available for sunseekers looking for a late break to the sun with two new routes from Manchester to Lanzarote and Birmingham to Tenerife. More capacity will be opened up over Christmas with Fuerteventura added into the mix from December. Additional three- and four-night breaks will also be available to Lapland (Kittila) during December from Gatwick and Manchester airports. Mark Hall, the companies' director of product, said: “After a mixed bag of summer weather in the UK, the Canaries are proving particularly popular, especially for families wanting to escape over half term. We are seeing an upsurge in demand over Christmas so we are opening up extra capacity to key destinations in December. EMERALD WATERWAYS held its final launch for 2017 with Emerald Liberté, the third in the trio of new Star-Ships, officially christened earlier this month in Lyon, France. Australian travel industry veteran and long-standing cruise and tour director, Maxine Collins, took the honours as godmother during the official Christening ceremony, which follows the official launch of Emerald Radiance in Porto in June with top UK travel agent Gill Williams as godmother. Emerald Destiny, the first of the new 2017 StarShips, was christened in Vienna in May by godmother Coleen Christie, the award-winning Canadian newscaster. The line's fleet now totals seven ships since the company started in 2014. David Winterton, global brand curator for the company, said: “We’re delighted to have Maxine as the godmother of Emerald Liberté, the latest Star-Ship in our rapidly growing fleet. She has led many guests around the world during her 28 years with the company, and was a standout choice for the role. “Emerald Liberté has been custom-built for cruising through the southern France rivers, Rhône & Saône, providing an authentic taste of Gallic life. Whilst offering our guests modern luxury at an affordable price.” The boutique ship has a capacity of 138 guests and a crew-to-guest ratio of 1:3. Liberté cruises on the Rhône and Saône Rivers through the ever-popular Provence and Burgundy region on eight-night itineraries from either Lyon or Arles between April and October. The itinerary includes Chalon-Sur-Saône, Beaune, Macon, Tournon, Arles and historic Avignon where guests are also treated to an on-board, Provençal-style highlight dinner by acclaimed local chef and Top Chef France finalist, Fabien Morreale. conferenceupdate

Last weekend saw the Elite Travel Group hold its annual conference in Spain’s Calvia, Mallorca. The theme was ‘Life Begins at 40’, with the consortium celebrating 40 years since it launched in 1977 as Midconsort. Here’s a round-up of the main headline stories…

Agents not ‘in credit’ once new credit card fees are abolished FROM JANUARY next year consumers will no longer be charged a fee for spending on their credit cards, meaning that it will be up to travel agencies to soak up bank charges themselves. This raised much concern from delegates at Elite Travel Group’s annual conference, with many agents asking for help – from both ABTA and Elite - on negotiating reduced fees from the banks. Sarah Archer, sales manager from Beachcomber, said: “I’m not sure whether I speak on behalf of my tour operator friends but there have been a number of companies who have made the decision to add in extra commission to help cover the fees. The drop in charges is a commercial decision that affects every business in the country, but it seems that in our industry, operators are being expected to pick up the pieces on the fallout of this. “I accept that the tour operator sets the price and the agent is collecting the money on behalf of the operator, but equally if we have to raise prices to offer more commission to offset a credit card charge, I don’t know if this is the perfect solution. “Somebody should be lobbying the banks on this as this is a major thing that affects our industry. It was designed to stop the banks being greedy, but the merchant providers can still impose those charges, so it’s the retailer that loses out.” Simon Bunce from ABTA said that there is scope for the association to become involved in this. He said: “Our role is to inform the treasury of the charges that merchants are passing on and get this reviewed. This is an area where perhaps Brexit will be useful as we can argue that we shouldn’t have to continue the way we are doing once we leave the EU. “Getting into negotiating with banks is very difficult for ABTA to do as we don’t want to cut across what people are doing already on this.”

● ELITE ANNOUNCED that all its members were offered free

membership in 2018. ● NEXT YEAR’S conference will be held in Spain’s Grenada in the

Andalucia region. ● DOMINIC CARRICK from If Only spoke to delegates about finding

their forte. His advice included not to be lured by the trend of diversification, don’t neglect your strengths, diversify when you are strong and not to neglect your core business. ● DAVE CORNTHWAITE, a worldwide traveller who used nonmotorised transport to travel 1,000 miles on each of his journeys, inspired delegates at the conference with stories of his travels. Important lessons he had learnt included: ‘We learn more from our failures than our successes’, ‘While we should take our work seriously, we shouldn’t take ourselves seriously’ and ‘A little bit of perseverance takes us a long way’. ● SIMON MCINTYRE from Inghams told attendees of his near-death experience on a flight back from the Advantage conference in 2015 and the lessons he had learned from this. They included 1. Staff knowing about our strategy and shared goals 2. Having the right people for the job is crucial 3. Every second counts 4. Acknowledging issues like a human 5. Don’t be afraid to find out what people are thinking 6. Get help when you need it and 7. Spending time with family is important.

16

October 27 2017

Elite’s chief executive, Neil Basnett, said that by working with Advantage, who have 500-600 members, Elite would be in a stronger position to negotiate with the banks. He urged members to read the email that Advantage initially sent its members the previous week, which Simon was also distributed by Neil to Bunce , ABTA members, on what they need to be doing about the fees, and urged members to offer feedback on how Elite can press Advantage into helping more. Barry Moxley of Traveltime suggested that tour operators could increase the price of their holiday by 2% so that there’s no money off the agent’s bottom line. Sarah Archer from Beachcomber responded: “Not every single travel company charges credit card fees including both our competitors and yours, so if you start increasing the price in order to cover those fees, you become ‘unprice competitive’ against others, which means that you won’t get the booking anyway. “It’s as concerning to us tour operators as it is to travel agents and we stand to lose money off our bottom line as well, so putting the price up is not the whole answer.”

Industry is a ‘resilient bunch’ MODERATOR STUART Linnell MBE asked panelists at the recent Elite Travel Group conference in Calvia, Mallorca on issues that have recently affected the industry – namely airline failures and the ongoing threat of terrorism - and how the industry as a whole is coping with them. Sarah Archer of Beachcomber said: “The travel industry is a resilient bunch and you just have to get on with it. You’re always going to have terrorism and financial struggles and that’s life, It’s no different in other industries – its just the challenge of getting on with it.” ABTA’s Simon Bunce said: “Global economies are messing around, terrorism is the new demon of our age and you think this should be impacting on people’s desire to travel – but it isn’t. There are more people travelling now; £37billion has gone through ABTA members in the last year, despite the fact that more regulations have come into force." With regards to issuing refunds on Monarch flights, Bunce told agents that their clients’ claims were against the CAA – and that they shouldn’t be issuing refunds themselves to clients. Instead clients should be taking the client directly to the CAA. At the time of the conference (October 14), the CAA had still not made its claim form available on its website. Meanwhile, the industry has been left disgruntled that the CAA were instructed by the government to not only help the 15,000 or so Monarch customers left stranded abroad, but to also bring back the other 85,000 passengers who were not ATOL protected. The underlying feeling being that the CAA made a mockery of why customers should book with ABTA and ATOL-protected providers if there was no incentive to do so. Elite’s chief executive, Neil Basnett, said that he was convinced it was a political decision, and that the government had saved themselves the embarrassment of not leaving Brits stranded.

WTMnews Join the debate on over tourism

Experts at WTM to predict key travel trends A PANEL of senior executives from across the industry will debate the impact of Brexit, currency movements and other geopolitical trends during a World Travel Leaders session at WTM. Called ‘UK Markets – What can we expect in 2018’, the discussion will cover major issues in the UK’s outbound, inbound and domestic markets with: Caroline Bremner, head of travel for Euromonitor International; Richard Calvert, chief executive at Shearings Leisure Group; Nick Longman, managing director of TUI UK & Ireland; Peter Shanks, development director with Imagine Cruising; and Tristram YardeLeavett, managing director at Tourwise of London. Simon Press, senior director for WTM London, said: “Some of the effects of last year’s Brexit referendum are being felt already, so it will be fascinating to hear what these industry bosses think will happen in the future. “There are many other challenges and opportunities to consider too – how the fall in sterling is affecting inbound and outbound tourism, and how security issues are affecting travel trends, for example. Our panellists have decades of expertise to draw upon, as well as the latest market analysis, so their insights will help delegates to get a clearer picture of what to expect in 2018 and beyond.” The session will take place in the WTM Inspire Theatre on November 6, from 14:00-15:15.

WITH REPORTS from around the world talking of ‘tourismphobia’ and the ‘invasion of tourists’, over-tourism has become a hot topic and The UNWTO & WTM Ministers’ Summit will debate the issue on Tuesday November 7. Taleb Rifai, UNWTO secretary-general, said: “Managing the growing number of visitors to many popular areas of our planet, including cities, is crucial for both hosts and visitors, both international and domestic. Growth is not the enemy. Growing numbers are not the enemy. Tourism growth can and should lead to economic prosperity, jobs and resources to fund environmental protection and cultural preservation, as well as community development and progress needs, which would otherwise not be available. Yet ensuring that tourism is an enriching experience for visitors and hosts alike, demands strong, sustainable tourism policies, practices, and the engagement of national ,as well as local governments and administrations, private sector companies, local communities and tourists themselves.” The summit will discuss how managing the growth of visitors to many popular destinations is critical for both hosts and visitors and it will look at how tourism growth and sustainability can and should go hand in hand. The topic will also be the key theme of World Responsible Tourism Day on Wednesday November 8, and will feature throughout the responsible tourism programme across all three day of WTM.

ENIT promotes diversity as it teams up as Premier Partner THE ITALIAN National Tourist Board (ENIT) will be the Premier Partner at this year’s WTM, offering maximum support to the tourism industry and highlighting Italy’s diverse range of holidays. The tourism board will have two main stands - EU2000 and EU2070 - and will share its exhibition space with 230 Italian travel trade partners, including regional tourism bodies, hotels, travel agencies, resorts and operators. Going beyond its traditional tourist destinations, ENIT will be shining a spotlight on different themes in the coming years with Italian villages the focus for 2017 and food and wine in 2018. Both themes aim to highlight the Italian

way of life which can be experienced by tourists across the whole country and have been constructed so that the regional tourist boards and cities can work together with the trade to create immersive itineraries. Dario Franceschini, minister of cultural heritage and tourism, said: “In the tourism sector, where competition is so fierce, it is fundamental for Italy to diversify its attractions and spread tourist flows over the entire national territory. Tourism, this extraordinary engine of economic development, is a medium of peaceful encounters between cultures and a fundamental antidote to the fear of the different.”

Join the European Capital of Culture party at Malta stand IN A short few months, Valletta will become the European Capital of Culture 2018. Valletta 2018 will officially launch on January 20, 2018, with the city’s four main squares providing backdrops to acrobats, dancers and digital artistic projections and celebrated with more than 400 cultural activities across the islands throughout the year. Home to a thriving gastronomy scene, the Malta Tourism Authority has also commissioned a special map to showcase its popular foodie spots and hidden gems. Tourists can follow the trail across the archipelago and find the best places to sample traditional Maltese delicacies and local wine. The Malta Tourism Authority is inviting visitors to its stand every day at 16:00, where they will have a chance to try some Maltese food and wine. There will also be an onstand competition where entrants who leave their business card will have the chance to win free flights from Southend Airport to Malta with easyJet and three nights’ breakfast stay at the five-star InterContinental Malta in St Julian’s. Promote Iceland

Responsible tourism focus from Iceland THROUGHOUT 2018, Promote Iceland will be promoting responsible tourism and is aiming to ensure that all tourists are educated on how to travel responsibly around the destination’s seven regions. Earlier this year, Iceland announced a new initiative to positively encourage visitor behaviour and promote a meaningful travel experience by launching a first-of-a-kind pledge for visitors. ‘The Icelandic Pledge’, which has already attracted more than 25,000 visitors, invites travellers to sign an online agreement to be a responsible tourist and to experience Iceland the way that Icelanders do. Alongside a main focus on responsible travel the destination will also be promoting Icelandic gastronomy, traditions, adventures and culture.

‘Bee’ sure to check out Slovenia’s stand AT THIS year’s WTM, Slovenia Tourism will be introducing 2018/2019 as the official Year of Culture, in order to promote the country’s rich cultural and natural heritage alongside responsible tourism. The Year of Culture campaign will feature Slovenia’s diverse cultural offerings, from the galleries and museums of the capital Ljubljana, to ancient castles, World Heritage Sites and a year-round calendar of performances and festivals. The historical town of Radovljica will be Slovenia’s official partner at this year’s World Travel Market, a destination famous for its rich bee-keeping tradition and where the beekeeping museum tells the story behind the country’s passion for api-tourism which goes back centuries. In order to officially launch the 2018/19 Year of Culture and to celebrate the first World Bee Day taking place in May 2018, the Slovenia stand will be preparing many activities, such as honey tastings, beehive painting workshops and more, that agents can try.

Become a Flanders Master at EU1550 SPECIAL FEATURES for VISITFLANDERS at this year’s WTM include its refreshed e-learning Flanders Master platform, designed to make the training programme more accessible to agents using mobile devices, and to help them study when and how it best suits them. The platform will also feature a new training module focusing on the upcoming three-year Flemish Masters programme of events taking place during 2018 to 2020, and focusing on Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent. The new module will inform agents about what will be happening in the region over the next few years, starting with Baroque Antwerp in June 2018, highlighting key permanent attractions in each city along with special events and festivals. There will also be a representation of all the cities on stand throughout the show, or should agents wish, they can register their interest to attend a special evening reception being held on November 6, where the cities will be able to tell them more about what is happening in terms of tours and activities for 2018. It is still possible for visitors to experience the Golden Age when walking through the cities by viewing art by Dutch Masters in the many museums, or learning about the Dutch East India Company which brought great wealth to Holland. Part of this narrative will be the 2019 themed year ‘Rembrandt and the Dutch Golden Age’, marking 350 years since the great Dutch Master passed away, and this will be commemorated throughout the year with exibitions in the cities of The Hague, Leiden and Amsterdam. In addition, cities such as Middelburg and Delft will also host Golden Age themed events and smaller exhibitions.

Fort Myers & Sanibel launch new branding campaign

PERU’S SPECTACLED bears are in the spotlight as Paddington Bear turns 60 in 2018. The story goes that although Paddington lived in London he originally came from ‘darkest Peru’ where he was brought up by his Aunt Lucy. Peru’s Andean bear is the last remaining short-faced bear and the only surviving species of bear native to South America, primarily found in the Western Andean region. The spectacled bear is classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, but Peru is dedicated to the conservation of its native bear species.
