Fifth of Brits would stay in robot-run hotels according to KAYAK BRITS ARE becoming more open to the idea of robots replacing humans in certain sectors, according to new research from KAYAK.co.uk The company's research revealed that one in five British adults (20%) say they would actually prefer to stay at a hotel run by robots compared to a traditional hotel, rising to more than a quarter for men (26%). Whilst the novelty factor undoubtedly plays a part in the desire to stay in a robot-run hotel, a fifth of those questioned (19%) believe robots are more
trustworthy than humans, saying they’d prefer to leave their luggage with them as a result. Meanwhile, one in seven (14%) believe robots could wipe out poor customer service while 18% highlighted the fact that they would expect robot staff to reduce hotel rates. Whilst the majority of UK adults (75%) see the benefits of robotics in general, just 16% would like robots to look like humans. This is perhaps due to 42% believing that there is a real possibility robots could take over the world in the future.
New York is apple of our eye for Christmas bookings MOMONDO.CO.UK ANALYSED its UK flight searches made over the last four months for travel during this upcoming Christmas and New Year period. The metasearch site looked at planned flight departures from all UK airports between December 18 and January 3, and also studied where in the world is mostpopular for short breaks of seven days and under, and for long breaks, of more than seven days. America’s New York reclaimed first place as the most popular destination for a winter break for Brits, for both long and
short breaks, having been beaten to the top spot last year by Bangkok. Next most-popular destination for Brits was Dubai, for both long and short breaks, with its guaranteed sunshine, luxurious hotels and relatively short midhaul flight time. And Lisbon, Portugal’s capital and largest city, was third most-searched, for long and short breaks. Other destinations, in order of popularity for short-break bookings included Amsterdam, Paris, Reykjavik, Berlin, Tenerife, Porto and Barcelona.

SEO Travel offers free digital marketing to small travel companies SEO TRAVEL has launched a new initiative to help small travel businesses better understand the digital landscape and enable them to perform better online. This includes digital marketing workshops where attendees can get direct help with their own website, a free video course covering aspects of successful travel-specific digital marketing, and regular help and advice via the company's travel blog. The company's MD, Tom Mcloughlin, said: “I’ve always been frustrated by the misinformation that flies around in the digital industry with a lot of individuals and companies often misleading people for their own gain. Without having extensive knowledge of the digital landscape it is almost impossible for people to make an informed decision on what is best for their company online.
“Unfortunately small businesses don’t have the time or budgets to attain sufficient, trustworthy knowledge and this means salespeople can take advantage of them by making false promises that they don’t deliver on. Our goal with ‘Go the Extra Mile’ is to give small travel businesses that knowledge so they can carry out some of the initial work themselves and start to build their online presence, as well as giving them much more information to work with when considering paying for someone’s services so they can make a more informed decision.” A free video course is available at http://seotravel.co.uk/video-course, with the first workshop planned for February 2016 in London. For details see http://seotravel.co.uk/blog or email tom@seotravel.co.uk

OW! JUST had an amazing weekend in Manchester at Travel Counsellors’ Annual Conference. Our conference weekend is one that we always look forward to, as not only do we have a really great time, but we come away with such enthusiasm and motivation for the year ahead. This year’s conference was no exception – in fact, I would say it was probably one of the best. It got off to a great start at the Friday night welcome bash. Back again as our celebrity host for the evening was TV presenter Vernon Kay with entertainment from TV’s Strictly Come Dancing dancers, Ian Waite and Erin Boag, followed by comedian John Bishop. It was a very enjoyable evening, marred only by the news of the tragic events taking place in Paris. Our thoughts were still with the people of Paris and the families affected by this tragic event when we held a minute’s silence the following day. There were over 200 suppliers attending our conference this year and it was a great opportunity to meet some of them at our Saturday ‘Pow-Wow’ afternoon and to learn more about their latest products and offers. The conference sessions were interesting and informative, updating us with all the latest company news and plans for the future. We also had two truly inspirational guest speakers, Chris Moon and Katie Piper. They are both such shining examples of what the human spirit can overcome in times of adversity, and there was hardly a dry eye in the house while they recounted their experiences. On Saturday, we enjoyed our gala dinner and awards evening, along with great entertainment, starting off with a performance from the boy band the ‘Overtones’ as we sat down to dinner and finishing with party band ‘Madhen’ who had us all dancing into the small hours. After much speculation as to who would be the headline act for the weekend, we were all delighted when all was finally revealed and Gary Barlow took to the stage. The weekend went all too quickly but we had such a wonderful time. It was a brilliantly organised event and provided the perfect mix of information, motivation, entertainment and fun. Roll on next year! As this is my last column of the year, I’d like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Industry Insight by... Combatting the winter blues: where to find sunshine without going long-haul by AITO member Akin Koç from Anatolian Sky Holidays

HEN CONSIDERING destinations for winter sun holidays, many agents and their clients automatically think of far-flung destinations, such as the Caribbean and Far East, involving long-haul flights and lots of travelling. In actual fact, there are plenty of places within a few hours of the UK where it is possible to get a much needed dose of sunshine and break from the dark evenings and often dreary British climate. Destinations such as North Cyprus, Madeira, Morocco and Egypt are all very easy to get to from the UK and, while they may not offer the scorching temperatures of the Indian Ocean for example, their mild winter temperatures are ideal for anyone who wants to do more than just lounge on a beach or pool-side. Out of season, all of these destinations offer great value, and there are far fewer crowds, so getting around the major tourist sites is much easier and more pleasant than in the peak of the summer. City breaks are ideal during the winter months, especially if time is precious and a short burst of sunshine and warm weather is all that’s needed. Cities such as Marrakech and Istanbul both feel a world away from the UK, and have plenty to experience in a packed three- or five-day getaway. Visitors will find that it’s still warm enough to sit outside with a cool drink and watch life in the markets and streets unfold, but cooler for sightseeing and soaking up the atmosphere. November to March is a great season for walking holidays in destinations such as Turkey, Morocco, Madeira and North Cyprus, as summer temperatures often make it unbearably hot and unsuitable for any prolonged outdoor activity. Clients who are interested in really getting under the skin of the country, and seeing beyond the usual tourist haunts, can join an expert guide to follow walking trails that uncover elements of the culture, landscape and history that other visitors often bypass. We have found that these types of holidays are really growing in popularity as they give clients a chance to discover well-known destinations from a different perspective. For any clients who can’t bear the British winter weather, shorter haul destinations also offer great value for long-stay breaks. North Cyprus in particular is very popular with those older clients who prefer to take three weeks or more away and soak up the atmosphere and culture of destinations. Examples include bustling

While beach resorts in most Mediterranean destinations close down for the winter, those on Morocco’s Atlantic coast are more year-round. In Agadir and Essaouira for example, the golden sands and relaxed resorts are often popular with clients escaping the UK. Temperatures here are usually around 20°C, even in the middle of winter, so these are perfect choices for anyone who just wants to relax and recharge their batteries.

At home What's your favourite household gadget? It must be the dishwasher - it was also the first thing I bought for my home with my first salary. What are your favourite TV programmes I’m a little bit of a nerd, so the SyFy Channel runs too often I guess. What music do you listen to? Alternative, indie-rock and electronic runs most often. What's your favourite movie? Death Becomes Her – black humour at its best! What's been your latest DIY project? I built a 'pigeon-detector' with motion sensor making noises of aggressive crows to scare them away from my balcony.
At work Where would you most like to visit and why? The Far East appeals most at the moment, probably because the cultural differences are quite pronounced. What are your hobbies? Swimming, hiking, history and travelling What trait do you dislike in other people? Opportunism. Either go one way or the other (after due consideration) and be decisive! What is your best quality? My friends say I’m a good hobbypsychologist for them, so I must have some analytical skills and I am able to give good advice. If you could invent a new law, what would it be? Compulsory ethics and social science lessons from Kindergarten onwards.

What other companies/organisations have you previously worked for? I have worked in a local tourism consultancy focusing on the destination level, in market analysis in London and did some internships in hotels and the local hospital. If you could change one thing in the industry what would it be? Decrease the level of bureaucracy, no matter if it’s for visa applications, infrastructure projects, event organisation and so on. What personal item do you have on your desk at work? Gifts from tour operators and journalists I have worked with, e.g. an Indonesian mask, Japanese glasses, American gratitude certificates and so on... What's the best thing about your job? Meeting people from all over the world and introducing them to Innsbruck. What's a typical day like? Checking mails in the morning, organising fam-trips, arranging new prospects for tour operators, learning about the markets I’m responsible for, meeting with local tourism suppliers, producing content for marketing campaigns and marketing control. What's your favourite travel app? I really liked Couchsurfing which allows you to see what a destination is like from an inner perspective. Who has been your inspiration in the travel industry? Herodot, who wrote the travel guide to The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World in 450 BC has inspired me ever since I was a kid. What skill are you most proud of? Not getting stressed out and seeing opportunities instead of problems. What do you love about the travel industry? It brings people together from different backgrounds and cultures and thus increases the understanding of each other. What item do you always take with you when travelling? Swimming trunks – there is always the chance to find some free time for the hotel pool, even if it is only for ten minutes.

Olympic responds to rise in Greece sales by adding new properties THE GREEK islands look set to do well for Olympic Holidays next summer, with early bookings promising and inquiries high, according to the operator's commercial director Photis Lambrianides. He said: "Greece and its islands are shaping up well for summer 2016. There's a sense of optimism that in tourism terms, Greece has got it right, with a great product and good price levels. "The demand is there. People want to visit the Greek islands, just like they've always done, and hoteliers have reacted well, many having maintained their rates at 2015 levels. "With our early booking discounts, the prices we can offer for summer 2016 are excellent - from self-catering apartments up to five-star luxury hotels, there is something for everybody. The smaller Greek islands tend to sell earlier, clients having identified them in advance as the place they want to spend their summer vacation – also because there are fewer hotels and apartments."
Properties added for next summer include the 55-room, four-star Orizontes Santorini Boutique Hotel on Santorini, and two four-star hotels on Crete – the Agapi Beach in Ammoudara and Kalyves Beach in Kalyves. As an example of prices, the Kosmas Apartments on Corfu lead in at £285 per person for seven nights' self-catering in studio accommodation, while a two-week stay costs from £295. Cyprus, meanwhile, is seeing consistent sales for the operator this winter, with summer 2016 booking levels promising. Lambrianides said: "Winter demand for Cyprus's fourand five-star hotels is steady, and summer is starting to shift. Next year we will be placing greater emphasis on Greece and Cyprus among our featured destinations, going back to our roots as we refocus on our core products.” For more information call 0844-499 4449 or see www.olympicholidays.com

Bedwood Hostel
Visit Denmark highlights budget accommodation options FROM A CITY centre hipster hostel with a tattoo parlour and a converted public library to sports and spas in acres of Nordic countryside, Denmark’s hotel scene continues to offer some of the best in Scandinavian design, with fresh ideas that are ideal for all tastes and budgets. Copenhagen has welcomed its latest ‘hipster hostel’, with the opening of Urban House in March. Pitched as a cross between a hotel and a hostel, it’s located in the trendy Vesterbro area of the city and offers a large lounge area, bar, bike shop, hot dog restaurant and its own tattoo parlour. A variety of rooms are available - from a single ‘shoebox’ to larger rooms with private facilities for couples, families and groups of people. There are also lockers to store valuables, a laundry room and a self-service kitchen. More hostel accommodation can be found in the new Bedwood Hostel which opened recently in an historic seafront warehouse dating back to 1756. Billed as Copenhagen’s ‘cosiest’ hostel, it’s situated in a quiet spot in vibrant Nyhavn and has been renovated by two seasoned hostel travellers, using recycled materials in as many places as possible to create their vision of the perfect hostel for their fellow travellers. Outside of the capital, Denmark’s second city, Aarhus, which is taking up the mantle of European Capital of Culture in 2017, is seeing a new period of redevelopment with several new hotels and hostels set to open in 2016. Examples include Wakeup Hotel, which is more akin to a three- or four-star property in terms of facilities, with prices more in keeping with a two-star establishment when it opens in autumn next year. Ideal for the budget traveller, the hotel’s concept is based on relatively small, yet well appointed rooms, with furniture from top Danish designers and views over Aarhus from the top levels of the hotel. Meanwhile, as part of the major regeneration of the harbour side in Aarhus, the city’s main library has moved to its new location at Dokk1 by the harbour allowing the old library building, in Mølleparken, to be transformed into the Library Hostel, and ready to welcome its first guests in 2016. With 100 rooms and 450 beds, the aim is to create a social space for both locals and travellers with accommodation at affordable prices. For further information see http://tinyurl.com/p3brhzk

The England cricket tour also commences in December and the recent changes in immigration regulations for those travelling with children who are under 18 will also help to grow small group safari bookings.” As an example of packages, a seven-day African Insight southbound overland expedition leads in at £475 per person. The itinerary starts in Livingstone and ends in Johannesburg, and takes in Hwange, Kruger and Victoria Falls national parks en route. The price includes transport, camping accommodation, most meals and the services of a tour leader/driver. A local payment of £206 per person and flights are excluded. Clients departing on January 6 will be able to combine the tour with the third Sunfoil Test Match (January 1418) at Bidvest Wanderers stadium in Johannesburg, with the overland adventure ending in ‘the City of Gold’ on January 12. BEST WESTERN GB has launched its new A to Z of Winter Stays campaign, which is offering savings of up to 50% off a selection of properties throughout Great Britain this winter – for stays between December 14 and March 31, 2016. Examples include ‘A is for Afternoon tea’ at the company’s Ivy Hill Hotel near Chelmsford, topped off with a chilled glass of prosecco; and ‘B is for Bears’, where guests can stand in the sunken garden behind Best Western Premier Moor Hall Hotel & Spa in Sutton Coldfield, which more than 500 years ago was used as Henry VIII’s favourite bear pits. Today, guests are more likely to see birds and bees, from which the hotel produces its own honey. Also highlighted is ‘C is for Castle’ at Walworth Castle Hotel in Darlington, where guests can stroll through the gardens to take in the turrets, suits of armour and grand surroundings. The company is also running weekly competitions on Twitter (@BestWesternGB) and Facebook (Best Western GB), giving away hotel stays, experiences and other prizes relating to the campaign. Sarah Fussey, the hotel group’s marketing director, said: “During winter, when it’s getting darker earlier and we spend a lot of time indoors, Brits need a break more than ever. We’ve launched the A to Z of Winter Stays campaign to make winter breaks more accessible and to celebrate the success of our independently owned hotels, each offering something personal and unique.” For further information or to book visit www.bestwestern.co.uk/winter or call 0844-387 6310.
