W
ho would have thought that at the beginning of this year the industry would be reflecting on a “better-than-expected summer” for Greece? With the country on the verge of being thrown out of the euro at the start of 2012, with its economy on the brink of collapse, a failing tourism industry was the least of its worries. However, our love affair with Greece has survived the ravages of faltering economies and government leaders that fail to agree on what’s best for the country. While the figures didn’t look good at the start of the summer, competitive pricing from Greek hoteliers gave the lates market a welcome boost, putting overall arrivals on course to hit the 16 million mark by the end of the year. However, coverage of unrest in Athens did have a negative impact on visitor numbers to the capital with many tourists opting to miss out the capital and head straight to the islands. In this year’s All About the Eastern Mediterranean supplement, we speak to the experts to find out how holidays on the mainland can differ from the islands. Over in Cyprus, hotel groups have also pulled out the stops to attract visitors with savings and added value such as half-board upgrades helping to pull in the crowds. Low-cost carriers have put their faith in the destination with new flights to Larnaca and Paphos from regional airports. The Cyprus Tourist Organisation is hopeful that the new multi-million pound marina in Limassol will prove to be a big draw. The CTO is also doing its bit for the trade with a number of fam trips planned for later this year. In our Cyprus section, we look at the different types of holiday experiences your clients can have on the largest island in the Med. Value for money has helped Turkey to survive the economic challenges of recent years, and the affordability factor is still one of its key attractions for Britons feeling the pinch. But what can you expect from a holiday in Turkey? Is it all sun, sea and raki? The specialists spill the beans on where to go in 2013. With new resorts opening, older hotels being refurbished and airlines launching regional flights from the UK, 2013 is looking good for Greece, Cyprus and Turkey

reece, Cyprus and Turkey are like old friends to the UK market – loyal, safe and full of experience. And for all these reasons, they remain top of the list of summer – and winter – sun destinations for millions of Britons every year. We catch up with the operators, tourist boards and hoteliers to get the lowdown on their plans for 2013.
Greece Greece and Cyprus specialist Cyplon Holidays is focusing its efforts for winter sun 2012/13 online with more accommodation available through its website than ever before, with free car hire included on packages and flight-only too. For summer 2013, Cyplon is reducing its product in its Cyprus, Greece and Islands brochure and increasing its accommodation portfolio on its website. The operator is also keen to promote its specialist products such as: Classical Tours of Greece packages; half-price offers for cruises around the Mediterranean; bowls packages in Cyprus for winter which include free line-dancing lessons; golf packages in Cyprus; and spa packages in Greece and Cyprus. Cyplon has introduced a Just Add Flights concept, which can also apply to its golf, spa, cruises and bowls packages. All of the products have private transfers and agents can add flights from their clients’ local airport. Just Add Flights are commissionable at 10%. The operator is also preparing a new weddings brochure, which will be launched in December with a range of weddings to more Greek Islands. 4
Ionian Weddings The weddings specialist has added a new package to meet demand for UK couples to get married in Greece. The new wedding location is the Melissani Lake on Kefalonia. Couples can get married in a boat floating on the lake. The lake was discovered in the 1950s when the roof overhead collapsed, revealing the lake which is enclosed by grotto walls that are up to 36 metres high. Prices for the new package lead in at £2,474 and include wedding co-ordinator, handling and administration fees, boat hire, wedding ceremony on the boat, boat decorations, flowers, transfers, wedding cake for 12 people, photographers and 30 photographs and Ionian Weddings arrangement fees. Olympic Holidays The Greece and Cyprus specialist has added the newly built five-star, all-inclusive Kresten Royal Villas and Spa and Kresten Palace Hotel, both in Rhodes, and the three-star Asterias Village in Crete. In Turkey, the five-star Majesty Club Tuana and Park in Fethiye, the five-star Crystal Admiral Resort Suites and Spa in Side and four-star L'Ambiance Resort in Bodrum have been introduced. Summer 2012 has proved an unexpected success, according to commercial director Photis Lambrianides. "A major selling factor has been the excellent offers across the Greece and Cyprus hotel industry – in particular within the Greek islands, enabling us to boost our offer to consumers. “Prices have remained very competitive and we've been All About the Eastern Mediterranean

able to pass on excellent added value offers – such as free half-board upgrades – that have contributed to the destination's appeal. While Cyprus and to a lesser extent Turkey have both performed with merit, the Greek islands have been the choice for a lot of people this summer, particularly in the lates market.,” he added. Classic Collection Holidays The operator has introduced 20 new properties to its Greece programme and is featuring hotels in Corfu and Spetses for the first time. A spokesman for the operator said the picture for Greece seems quite mixed at the moment. “Athens, Rhodes and Crete are struggling year on year, and are currently more than 20% down overall. “However, Kos, Halkidiki, Corfu, Mykonos and Santorini are doing very well and are between 2% and 24% up year on year. Corfu in particular is offering very good value for money. Athens’s poor sales might well be as a result of adverse media coverage at the start of the summer, while Rhodes and Crete seem to be suffering with pricing issues, looking expensive compared to other areas of the Mediterranean in general,” he added. Classic Collection Holidays offers seven nights’ half-board at the Marbella Beach Hotel, Corfu from £685 per person, including flights and transfers. Cosmos Cosmos has launched its Greece 2013 programme, offering clients the chance to tailor-make their own holiday from the operator’s widest ever choice of destinations, accommodation and mix of durations. The new programme combines flights to the bigger and more well-known Greek destinations with island ferry travel to the lesser-known islands for a choice of single or twin-centre holidays. Fifty new apartments, villas and boutique hotels have also been introduced including properties on the mainland regions of the Pelion and the Peloponnese. New resorts and destinations are featured for the first time in the Dodecanese, Ionian, Sporades Islands as well as mainland Greece, including the lesser-known islands of Leros, Kalymnos and Telendos. New resorts on existing islands include Kanapista on Skiathos, Lefkimi on Corfu, Tragaki in Zante, Kalymnos on Kantouni, Karavomylos on Kefalonia and Kolymiba on Rhodes. Early-booking offers include a low deposit of £99 per person and free child places, plus savings of up to £200 per couple at selected properties. Planet Holidays The specialist has introduced new properties in Greece, including the Civitas Rethymnae Boutique Hotel in Rethymnon, Crete and Avli, an all-suite hotel with a restaurant, wine cellar and a shop that sells traditional products. Also new is Spilia Village in western Crete, which is ideal for people who enjoy walking, mountain-biking and swimming, and the Chryssana Beach Hotel on Kolimpari beach in Chania town. In Planet’s weddings programme, Rhodes and Santorini continue to dominate the weddings market for Greece with some new as-yet-to-be-confirmed venues for 2013. On Zante, Planet Weddings will be offering the five-star Alexandra Beach Hotel and Bungalows and Contessina in Tsivili. On mainland Greece, the Aldemar Olympian Village and neighbouring Aldemar Royal Olympian and Spa in Skafidia are new along with the five-star Kinsterna Hotel and Spa on the outskirts of Monemvasia and the five-star Nafplia Palace Hotel. Prestige Holidays The luxury operator has added two new all-inclusive hotels in Crete for 2013. The Iberostar Creta Panorama is a family-oriented, all-inclusive hotel near the fishing village of Panormo. Facilities include four outdoor pools and a kids’ clubs as well as a host of activities such as archery, basketball, mini-golf and tennis. Prestige offers a week's stay next summer from £699 per person including flights and transfers. The family-friendly Grecotel Meli Palace near Sissi Village is also new. The hotel features a large outdoor pool, separate children's pool, beach bar, games rooms and kids’ club. The hotel also has tennis courts and water sports. Prestige offers a week's stay next summer from £727 per person including flights and transfers. Mark Warner The all-inclusive holidays provider has opened a new five-star resort in Rhodes. The resort is located on Levante Beach on the eastern side of the island and is exclusive to Mark Warner. Accommodation includes a choice of standard rooms, family suites and 10 larger suites, eight of which have their own private swimming pool. The resort includes a water sports centre, tennis facilities, four swimming pools, a five-a-side football pitch, a spa and a child-care centre.The water sports centre offers dinghy sailing, windsurfing, waterskiing, wakeboarding and beach kayaking. Hard Rock mountain bikes are also available for guests to explore the island. The purpose-built tennis centre has six Astroturf courts and a multi-sport show court, all of which are floodlit, with Lawn Tennis Association-qualified tennis professionals available to coach players. Prices start at £549 for seven nights’ half-board including flights. Sunvil The Mediterranean specialist has added two new islands in the Dodecanese to its Greece programme for 2013. These include Kalymnos and Telendos with a full activities programme on Kalymnos, including rock climbing for which the island is famed. The more laid-back island of Telendos is just a 10-minute boat ride away and would perfectly complement a stay at Kalymnos. 6

Cyprus Low-cost carrier Jet2 has launched direct flights to Larnaca in Cyprus from East Midlands Airport and new services to Bodrum in Turkey from Glasgow Airport. The airline has also increased the number of flights to Bodrum and Dalaman from Leeds Bradford Airport. Flights to Bodrum depart from East Midlands, Manchester, Leeds Bradford, Glasgow and Newcastle airports up to twice weekly, while services to Dalaman depart from East Midlands, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford, Manchester and Newcastle airports operate up to four times a week. Flights to Paphos depart from East Midlands, Newcastle, Manchester, Glasgow and Leeds Bradford airports up to twice weekly. Finally, holidaymakers can jet to Larnaca in Cyprus from Leeds Bradford, Manchester and East Midlands airports up to twice weekly. All fares lead in at £72 including taxes. Kanika Hotels The luxury Cypriot hotel chain is renovating its Alexander the Great Beach Hotel in Paphos. The refurbishment, which is scheduled to be completed in March next year, will include the upgrading of accommodation, the addition of a new infinity swimming pool and pool bar, wedding garden, entertainment venue and kids’ club. Meanwhile, Kanika has completed an extensive refurbishment of its Elias Beach Hotel. The hotel now also has an all-new Havana Entertainment Venue, which offers different entertainment every day, including kids’ disco and games and adult-oriented show. Planet Holidays The specialist has added new properties and reintroduced some old favourites to its Cyprus and Greece programme for 2013. The Cypria Maris in Paphos is being brought back for next year as an all-inclusive, adults-only property, along side the Akti Village as self-catering and the Chloraka on the outskirts of Paphos and Villa Azzuro, a complex of villas with pools. Planet Holidays director Harry Kyrillou says short breaks to Cyprus are making a come-back thanks to the choice of flight options from British Airways, Cyprus Airways, Monarch and EasyJet. Classic Collection Holidays The luxury operator has added a new hotel to its Cyprus programme. The Constantinou Bros Athena Beach Hotel in Paphos has been introduced, bringing the total number of properties that the operator features in Cyprus to 20. Classic Collection offers seven nights’ B&B from £730 per person including flights and transfers. Olympic Holidays The eastern Mediterranean specialist has added a number of new properties to its 2013 summer sun programme to Greece, Cyprus and Turkey. New in Cyprus are the four-star Olympic Lagoon Resort in Ayia Napa, the three-star Moniatis Hotel in Yermasoyia village outside Limassol, and the Basilica apartment complex in Paphos. So White Boutique Suites A new five-star hotel has opened just outside Ayia Napa on the eastern coast of Cyprus. Anatolian Sky Holidays has expanded its Turkey programme for 2013 into the Datça Peninsula and Antalya’s Old Quarter. The Turkey specialist will be featuring new hotels in Datça such as the five-star, beachfront Perili Kok, which has been completely renovated and reopened earlier this year and the Datça Flow a modern, relaxed beachfront property with windsurfing and kite-surfing tuition. Also new is the Olive Farm, which has 10 cottage-style houses set in farmland. The owner of the hotel manufactures organic olive oils and high-quality cosmetic products using the olive oil produced on site. In Antalya, Anatolian Sky has added four properties in the Old Quarter, which are former mansions that have been renovated. The new additions are designed to offer an authentic experience for visitors and opportunities to visit out of season – Anatolian Sky recommends a twincentre trip to Istanbul and Antalya’s Old Quarter as an ideal combination for a visit to Turkey in winter. Elsewhere in Antalya, the luxury Mardan Palace, recently constructed at a cost of $1.7billion, has been added. The hotel has been built as a replica of the Dolmabache Palace in Istanbul. Anatolian Sky has also added one additional luxury gulet to the existing fleet. Cankaya 2 will operate along Anatolian Sky’s popular gulet cruise routes between Ka and Datça. Cosmos The operator has boosted its programme to Turkey following strong demand for the destination. The operator has introduced the Hilton Bodrum in Turkbuku, the Kusadasi Golf and Spa Resort in Kusadasi, the Venosa Beach Resort in Altinkum and NOA Javelin Beach Club in Ortakent. Commenting on its Turkey programme, product manager Gemma Carroll said: “Turkey is performing very strongly for us this year and our sales volumes are particularly good for Bodrum at the moment for package holidays and accommodation only. 7

“In terms of changes to the market, departures from Manchester and Birmingham have seen a significant increase year on year with Gatwick and Luton remaining at a par. As with our significant sales increase, all board bases are performing well with increases across the programme but with bed and breakfast and self-catering seeing the highest growth of 50%. “Our customers want flexibility and demand is strong for our nine, 10 and 11-night holidays. All-inclusive is still a popular choice with our clients as they know upfront how much money they're going to spend,”Carroll added.
The brochure features accommodation of all varieties with new additions including lesser-known quieter resorts. Day-time flights will operate from Gatwick and Manchester on Mondays to Dalaman. Marketing manager Chris Mansell said: “The 2013 brochure will be distributed to agents soon in an exciting new style to reflect a redirection in product positioning.” A deposit of £50 per person is required for all bookings made by the end of December. Prestige Holidays The luxury operator has introduced two new hotels to its Turkey programme for 2013 – the Design Hotel of Hillside Su Resort near Antalya and the Hilton Bodrum. The Hillside Su features a wide range of dining options and five bars plus a choice of water sports and activities.Prices lead in at £599 per person for seven nights’ bed and breakfast including flights and transfers. Meanwhile, seven nights’ all-inclusive at the Hilton Bodrum start at £769 per person with flights and transfers. Commenting on the new additions, marketing manager Nicky Shafe said: "The Hillside Su is located on a Blue Flag beach and offers free access to Aqualand next door making it attractive to the family market. It also has a fabulous spa. “The Hilton Bodrum is an all-inclusive property offering a great choice of activities and will also appeal to those travelling with children. Turkey has sold well this year and we have introduced these two new properties in response to an increased demand from families.”

A spokesman for the operator said Belek is particularly popular with its clients looking for luxury as the region boasts a number of high-end hotels including Kempinksi Hotel the Dome, Susesi Luxury Resort and the newly added Cornelia Diamond Golf Resort and Spa. Just Sunshine The Turkey specialist has launched its 2013 programme, featuring 300 properties in 13 Turkish resorts and all holidays pegged at 2013 prices. 8
Atlasjet Atlasjet’s Stansted-Istanbul Ataturk route will be operating every day from November 3 with prices from £144 return The additional Saturday flight is designed to offer more convenience for clients looking for a long weekend break. Atlasjet first launched flights from the UK to Turkey in May. yprus has been through its fair share of ups and downs over recent years with its drive to provide high-end, holiday experiences proving to be a difficult objective in challenging trading conditions. With many Britons still forced to watch the pennies, affordability is the name of the game when it comes to booking a holiday. Harry Kyrillou, director of Planet Holidays, says that although the UK is still the main source of tourists, with 39% of the market – more than a million visitors – these numbers are decreasing “Arrivals from the UK are forecast to be 6.5% down up to July 2013, yet 3% up for arrivals from all countries, so other markets may be filling the gap, so hotels feel they do not need to struggle to fill their bed capacity. “However, on the plus side, there are some great early-booking discounts to be had, and short breaks to Cyprus are making a come-back thanks to the choice of carriers,” he adds. So we pick out the key markets for
Cyprus and find out from the operators what’s on offer for 2013. Head to the hills For clients keen to get away from the resorts and discover the inner Cyprus, Titan Travel has a nine-day Contrasts of Cyprus itinerary that brings to life old and new Cyprus by visiting the Troodos Mountains, the mosaics and monasteries of Paphos, the wine-producing village of Omodos and the historically fascinating capital of Nicosia. News in brief New marina Cyprus is poised to welcome a new tourist attraction with the opening of the new Limassol Marina this autumn. The new marina will join the two existing ones but promises to be a bigger development with 450 berths for yachts, water-front villas, boutiques, cafes and restaurants and a cultural centre. www.limassolmarina.com Good sport Four new reefs are being created next year to introduce some variety for divers. A wedding in a town hall costs 285 euros for the wedding licence and the services of the mayor. Luxury VIP holiday experiences is what Cypriot hoteliers know a lot about as there are a considerable number of five-star hotels in all of the resorts in Cyprus, including Paphos, Limassol, Larnaca, Ayia Napa, Protaras, Latchi and Pissouri. For clients who want the red-carpet treatment all the way, Olympic recommends Le Meridien Limassol Spa and Resort in Limassol. For agents Cyplon Holidays is hosting a fam trip to Cyprus this month with plans for three more early next year. The specialist will be inviting agents that are members of its Supreme Agents Club initially before offering places to other agents. To be a Supreme agent, consultants have to make 10 holiday bookings in a year with Cyplon. Members of the Supreme Agents Club receive training sessions every six months, exclusive dinners, a Cyplon bag of goodies, certificates and window stickers stating that they are a Cyprus and Greece specialist. Cyplon is also holding eight workshops around the UK in the next few months and is offering agents who make bookings of more than £6,999 a celebratory gift of champagne and truffles. Cyprus Tourist Organisation is hosting an educational to Cyprus for 11 agents from 22-27 October 2012. The fam trip will take in all the attractions and special-interest sites of Ayia Napa, Larnaca, Limassol and Paphos, with a day trip to the Troodos mountains scheduled in. The main idea of the trip is to provide agents with enhanced knowledge of alternative products beyond sun and sea, while updating them on current and future tourism developments. A Culture and Gastronomy fam trip is also taking place from 20-25 November, giving 10 agents the chance to explore the main attractions that relate to culture and history as well as sampling Cypriot food and wine.
Kanika Hotels is offering agents a range of incentives to boost wedding bookings to its Alexander the Great Hotel in Paphos. he affordability factor has been a key part of Turkey’s charm over recent years, with the value for money that the hoteliers have been able to offer, ensuring the country’s resorts have maintained their appeal to a wide range of Britons. And while getting a big bang for their buck is top of the list for many holidaymakers, those who have a bit more cash to splash are also spoilt for choice. We talk to the experts to get the lowdown on what Turkey has to offer for families, city-break seekers, luxury lovers and culture vultures. Best for…. families Anatolian Sky recommends the resort of Olu Deniz as the ideal holiday destination for families. Managing director Akin Koc says: “The fine sand and calm warm waters of the lagoon at Olu Deniz make it a perfect spot for families with small children, while the resort offers shops, bars, restaurants and a huge choice of water sports so has something to suit all ages. “For families with younger children, the shady gardens at the Hotel Meri, right on the beachfront, ticks all the right boxes,” adds Koc.

However, for families looking for less-commercial resorts, Koc suggests the quieter resorts of Datça, known for its relaxed atmosphere and pretty beaches, or Akyaka which is surrounded by pine forests. Sample product: Anatolian Sky offers seven nights’ all-inclusive at the Hotel Meri in Olu Deniz for two adults and two children (two to 11 years) from £2,324. The price is based on four sharing a room, including flights and transfers and accommodation. Kalkan For families with teenage children, Exclusive Escapes suggests the resort of Kalkan on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast. A spokeswoman for the operator says: “By day, teenagers can congregate at one of the many chi-chi beach clubs for a spot of sunbathing, swimming and water sports – the best of the bunch is at the Hotel Villa Mahal. “Alternatively, families can head out of town to one of the nearby beaches such as Patara, which is a 15-minute drive from Kalkan. Patara is one of the longest stretches of undeveloped beachfront in all Europe,” she adds. 13

Bodrum Olympic Holidays offers a wide choice of hotels in the family-friendly Turkish resorts of Bodrum and Marmaris, among them a good selection of all-inclusives for three-star up to five-star. A particular favourite with families is the all-inclusive resort of Vera Club Hotel. The hotel has plenty to keep the kids happy from dawn ‘til dusk with a water park pool, three children’s pools, mini club for kids four to 12 years old, a playground area, table tennis and football tables. Other activities for older children and adults include water-skiing, surfing, banana boating, and ringoes. For the grown-ups, there is also a diving school, a fully-equipped spa, billiards and a night club. A key selling point for the hotel is that it has family rooms that can accommodate two adults and two children. Best for city breaks For a city-break destination, with a huge variety of sites and experiences drawing on influences from the east and west, Istanbul is a safe bet. There is so much to see during a mini break to Istanbul, including; visiting Topkapı Palace, which was the seat of Ottoman power for more than three centuries; checking out the mosiac walls and vaulted chambers of Haghia Sophia – now a Turkish museum, it was once a Byzantine church – cruising across the Bosphorous, haggling for carpets at the Grand Bazaar, walking the city walls, and letting off steam in a hamam. And then there’s all the fine Turkish cuisine. Soak up the culture and architecture of Istanbul

Anatolian Sky suggests visitors consider a twin-centre with Istanbul and the car-free Princes Islands, a chain of nine islands in the Marmara Sea an hour by ferry from Istanbul. The islands have long been a favourite retreat for city dwellers, with pine forests, beaches and historic buildings to discover, including monasteries and 19th-century villas. During the Byzantine period, princes and other royalty were exiled on the islands and later members of the Ottoman sultans family were exiled there too, giving the islands their present name. No cars are allowed on the islands so the only way to get around is on foot, by bicycle or horse-drawn cart. Exclusive Escapes offers guests the chance to experience Istanbul with a personalised, walking tour of the city led by one of the operator’s local team. Best for luxury The resort of Kalkan has a number of luxury gems and one particular favourite of Anatolian Sky is Likya Residence, set on a hillside overlooking the resort. This adult-only luxury hotel has a reputation for excellence, with spacious accommodation, views across the bay and a spa complete with Turkish bath and a choice of swimming pools. Exclusive Escapes also recommends the resort of Kalkan, in particular the hotel of Mavi Koy, a large six-bedroom house with a private waterfront, jetty and beach platforms.

Best for… culture vultures On numerous occasions described as a melting pot of eastern and western cultures, Turkey has a treasure chest of sites to see and culture to experience. The country is too big and the experiences so varied to experience all in one go, so a great one to get a taste for the destination is on an escorted tour. Titan Travel has a 15-day Treasures of Turkey with departures from March to October next year. The tour takes in Istanbul, the ruins of Ephesus, the ‘fairy chimneys’ of Cappadocia, a stay in Antalya for a visit to the ancient sites of Perge and Aspendos and half way through the tour, there is a three-night stay in the resort of Kusadasi. Sample product: prices lead in at £1,049 per person for the seven-night Heritage of Turkey tour which starts off in Istanbul before heading to Bursa, the first capital of the Ottoman Empire, Gallipoli, Troy, the ancient city of Pergamum and Ephesus. Exclusive Escapes recommends a visit to the Roman city of Ephesus, which features some of the world’s best-preserved ruins, and was home to 250,000 people in the first century BC. Four miles away is what is believed to be the last home of the virgin Mary, a tiny house that has been visited by the last three popes. En route to Ephesus, visitors will pass the Temple of Artemis, once one of the seven wonders of the world. he bigger islands of Crete, Corfu, Kos, Kefalonia, Zante and Rhodes have hosted millions of sun-seeking Brits over the years. But as many of us are drawn back to Greece year after year, we are on the look-out for something different. While we still want to enjoy the country’s miles and miles of beautiful beaches, we are also keen to get to know a bit more about its culture and traditions. Island-hopping has long been the preserve of students and gap-year travellers – almost a rite of passage. However, operators are too dipping their toe into the twin and multi-centre waters, helped along by the increase in flight frequencies by the low-cost carriers. And while the mainland is still relatively undiscoverd by the UK market too, it has so much to offer. We catch up with the specialist to get some holiday suggestions for you and your clients. Mainland Greece Halkidiki Olympic Holidays’s Summer Sun programme for 2013 has two areas it is focusing on in mainland Greece - the Halkidiki region of northern Greece and the Peloponnese in the southern

part of the Greek mainland. Commercial director Photis Lambrianides says: “People tend to overlook the mainland when planning a Greek holiday. When selling Greece, agents should not disregard the mainland resorts as they all offer the attributes of a Greek island holiday." In particular, Lambrianides recommends Halkidiki for “its endless sandy beaches, picturesque villages, many areas of historic interest and a string of attractive resorts, among them such as Pefkohori, Kalithea, Sani and Kriopigi. Also, in the Peloponnese, the resorts of Stoupa, Kalamata and Aghios Nikolas are great.” Olympic recommends a stay in Sani Resort, which is located on the shores of the Kassandra peninsula, in Halkidiki, northern Greece. Sani Resort is a family owned and privately developed hideaway set on a 1,000-acre ecological reserve. There are four, five-star hotels: Sani Asterias Suites; Porto Sani Village and Spa; Sani Beach Club; and Sani Beach Hotel and Spa. There are three Sani spa venues and a marina at the heart of the resort which has restaurants, bars, designer boutiques and art galleries. Sample product: Olympic offers seven
nights' half-board at Sani Beach Club in Sani, Halkidiki, for £789 per person with flights and transfers. Athens and Spetses For a luxurious city break with a difference, Classic Collection Holidays recommends twinning Athens with Spetses, staying at the Grand Bretagne Hotel in Athens followed by a stay at the recently renovated Poseidonion Grand Hotel on Spetses waterfront. Boat hire can be arranged to discover the secluded beaches of Spetses. The island is renowned for its abundant pine trees, sandy beaches, secluded bays, architecture and picturesque port. Horse and carriage is the normal mode of transport around Spetses Town. Sample product: Classic Collection features three nights at Grande Bretagne Hotel, Athens and seven nights at Poseidonion Grand Hotel, Spetses from £1,556 per person. The price includes bed and breakfast, flights, transfers and ferry crossings. Pelion When it comes to holidaying on the Greek mainland, Cosmos recommends clients consider the Pelion region on

the eastern coast of central Greece. The region is easily accessible with flights to nearby Volos. The region, which is also known for its mountain ranges, boasts unspoilt fishing villages and resorts ideal for beach holidays, scuba diving, kayaking or trekking. Sample product: prices lead in at £495 per person for a seven-night stay at the Leda Hotel and Apartments in Horto, which has views of the gulf of Pagasitic. Peloponnese Ryanair launched twice-weekly flights to Patra Araxos in the Peloponnese from Stansted earlier this year, which has helped to open up access to this part of the mainland. Luxury hotel group Aldemar Hotels and Spa are hopeful that the new service will open up the short-break market to this part of Greece, where the hotel chain has three resorts. Aldemar Hotels and Spa UK sales director Mandy Kalliontzi said “previously we relied on Kalamata flights, and the transfer time was an hour and a half, now with these twice-weekly flights the transfer time has been halved. We hope to attract the short-break market as well as those looking for a main summer holiday.” The west Peloponnese has miles of sandy beaches and plenty of archaeological sites to see, not to mention the World Heritage-listed site of Ancient Olympia, the site of the world’s visit Olympic Games back in 776 BC. It is also possible to do day trips by ferry to the nearby port of Kyllini and Kefalonia. Aldemar has three hotels in the Peloponnese. These include: the five-star Olympian Village, a modern resort ideal for families and the smaller and more intimate five-star Royal Olympian – both sites are near the ancient site of Olympia – and the 22-room Epohes Guesthouse in the mountains. Island hopping Cosmos has added a number of new resorts and destinations in the Dodecanese, Ionian, Sporades Islands as well as mainland Greece, including the lesser-known islands of Leros, Kalymnos and Telendos. These islands give clients a taste of the rustic charm of Greece, and with flights to the nearby island of Kos, offer them the choice of combining a stay on a larger island too. Head of product Rob Goodwin said: “We have introduced a choice of authentic Greek accommodation in fishing villages and tiny coastal towns in lesser-known areas with spectacular mountain scenery, stunning bays and sandy beaches. Based on our core flying programme to the mainstream islands and including onward boat transfers, we can now offer for example five nights on the island of Leros followed by two nights on the peaceful retreat of Telendos or two nights in Skiathos with two nights in Skopelos.” Sample product: Cosmos offers seven nights on Kalymnos at the Katerina Apartments from £539 per person. Meanwhile, Inntravel is offering clients the chance to indulge in a bit of leisurely walking and island hopping in the Cyclades archipelago. The operator’s 14-night Enchanting Cyclades tour begins in Athens before journeying to the port of Piraeus to catch the ferry for the island of Serifos. With its landscape of sandy beaches, hills and its small picturesque capital topped by white-domed churches and

an ancient fortress overlooking the sea, Serifos is untouched by mass tourism. Inntravel’s walking trails take visitors into the white town of Chora, topped by a 15th-century castle, and along mountain ridges overlooking the coast. Sifnos is the next stop in this tour. It’s a beautiful, hilly island with white, flat-roofed houses set among terraces of olive trees, brilliant fuchsias and bougainvilleas. Here, visitors will find castles, chapels and the Chrisopighi monastery on a rocky outcrop only reached by a bridge. Next stop is the harbour town of Adamas on Milos – here is where the Venus de Milos statute was discovered. Egypt State Tourist Office The Egypt State Tourist Office has reported an increase in UK visitor numbers for the months of July and August. UK arrivals were up 15.4% for July, with August numbers up 2.6% on the same period last year. The tourist office has also welcomed the launch of new flights from Leeds Bradford airport to Sharm el-Sheikh. Thomson will be reintroducing the services from 8 November. Operators have also reinstated cruises between Cairo and Aswan following the opening of the Cairo to Luxor section after a 15-year ban put in place due to concern over water levels. Until recently, it was only possible to cruise along the Upper Nile, between Luxor and Aswan but now travellers can embark on an extended journey, and operators have introduced cruises to meet demand. Red Sea Holidays The Egypt specialist has launched its 2013 programme featuring a new look to reflect a more upmarket

product offering. The redesigned brochure, valid from October 2012 to November 2013, features a range of new resorts, tours and golf options with pre-bookable golf packages at a choice of PGA-designed golf courses in Makadi Bay, El Gouna, Soma Bay and Sharm el-Sheikh. The programme features the biggest-ever choice of holidays, including multi-centre holidays. The resort of El Gouna now has its own dedicated section, while new hotels have been added in Hurghada, Makadi Bay and Sharm el-Sheikh. The brochure also features the resorts of Soma Bay and Sahl Hasheesh for the first time. Following this year’s opening of the Makadi Spa and Sunwing Waterworld in Makadi Bay, Red Sea Holidays’ sister company Red Sea Hotels now plans to complete its development in Sahl Hasheesh which is due to open in 2014. The resort located between Hurghada and Makadi Bay will offer The Grand Palace and Grand Bay Sahl Hasheesh – a mega resort combining seven individual hotels. Three 18-hole

Anatolian Sky The operator has boosted its Egypt programme with the addition of the five-star Nile Style river cruiser for 2013. The cruiser departs on Wednesdays, which offers more flexibility as most Nile cruises depart on Mondays. Prices lead in at £1,035 per person for a seven-night Classic Nile Cruise on board the Nile Style departing from Luxor including flights, full-board accommodation and the services of an expert Egyptologist. Anatolian Sky has also added some new resorts in the Red Sea. These include the Maritim Jolie Ville Resort in Sharm elSheikh on the seafront at Na’ama Bay, with prices from £815 per person for seven nights; and the Sahara Sands Port Ghalib Resort, located on one of the world’s largest man-made salt water lagoons, with prices from £779 per person for seven nights. Managing director Akin Koc says: “Since the general election, we have really noticed Egypt showing good signs of recovery and the new president has filled the Egyptian people with confidence. “Nile cruises and cruise-and-stay itineraries continue to be our most popular but we have seen a rise in interest in tailor-made itineraries since the political problems have eased. The Nile cruise ships offer a boutique experience and a great way to see the temples and major sites.” Cox and Kings The tailor-made specialist has added two tours to Egypt for 2013. The Nile Discovery cruise from Cairo to Aswan offers passengers the chance to explore the lesser-known sights of the lower Nile, which has been reopened to vessels after a 15-year hiatus. The 16-day itinerary leads in at £1,995 per person and includes flight, transfers, excursions and accommodation with breakfast daily and full board on the cruise.
