elcome to our brand new trade supplement with Travel Bulletin. In this supplement we want to give you an update on all that is going on in our diverse island and to help you to select the right product for your clients. There has never been a better time to go to Tenerife with so many new attractions and places to see, as well as the old favourites. And this has also been reflected in the increase in visitors the island has recently seen from the UK market – experiencing an 11% increase in 2011 on the previous year. We are equally looking forward to the year ahead and have some exciting plans in place to work even closer with our trade partners in the UK – including trade shows, training, exhibitions, meetings and events. We will be in touch soon with further details. Although well-known for its beaches and year-round sunny climate, Tenerife is full of surprises. At the Tenerife Tourism Corporation our aim is to communicate the “real” Tenerife to the UK market, which remains the largest source market for the island. Although most British people tend to head to the beaches of the south, Tenerife also offers a wide range of holiday options, from rural breaks in hidden villages to relaxing holidays in luxury resorts. It is the unrivalled diversity and idyllic climate that makes our island so special and means that our visitors can enjoy the great outdoors at any time of year. Through our marketing campaigns and trade activities, including the promotion of our online training scheme – TenerifeXpert.com – we will aim to illustrate the full offering of the island. From cultural city breaks to secluded retreats, from outstanding volcanic landscapes and pre-historic forests to lush banana plantations and vineyards and from water activities (including diving, sailing, whale-watching and kite-surfing) to land activities (including climbing, caving, star-gazing and mountain biking), Tenerife really does have it all. Add to this the chance to sample delicious authentic Canarian cuisine in some of the traditional small villages of the north and some of Tenerife’s fine wines in the many vineyards scattered around the island as well as the friendly and welcoming people, and it soon becomes clear why we are so proud of our island. rom 21st-century additions to theme parks, worldfamous shows taking centre stage on the island to the reopening of one of the island’s most breathtaking hiking trails, Tenerife is firing on all cylinders for 2012. Siam Park A VIP Villa with Jacuzzi has been introduced at Siam Park, Europe’s biggest aquatic adventure land. The villa comes equipped with hammocks, solarium, bathroom with private shower and TV & DVD player and can accommodate up to 15 people. The water park is also in the early stages of developing a new ride. Kinaree will offer high speeds to showcase how it feels to be caught in a tornado wave. Loro Parque This animal kingdom based in the resort of Puerto de la Cruz will be welcoming a whole new host of creatures, along with a renovated sea lion stadium. These will include white Bengal Tigers, new parrot species and newly-born offspring of meerkats, marmosets, parrots, orcas and dolphins. Hiking in Hell’s Gorge Plans are in place to reopen one of Tenerife’s most spectacular natural hiking trails this summer. Barranco del Infierno, also known as Hell’s Gorge, is located in the Adeje area of the island and is expected to reopen this summer after extensive restoration to allow walkers to enjoy this beautiful natural landscape.
What’ Operators have expanded their programmes for summer and winter, airlines have added new regional flights for peak season and Tenerife has rolled out a packed programme of events for 2012

Tenerife SeaLab in South Tenerife A new marine laboratory is set to open in the regenerated harbour of El Puertito in southern Tenerife. SeaLab will provide a facility for in-depth research and investigation as well as education on the rich marine biodiversity in Tenerife. There is also a big focus on ecotourism in the El Puertito harbour with the conception of the FLYOVER by Ocean Dreams Factory, which is aimed at anyone who wants to experience conservation first hand. Under the guidance of diving instructors, divers will ‘fly’ underwater over the regenerated harbour, where they will encounter fantastic marine life including green turtles, butterfly rays, bull rays and octopus.

Cirque du Soleil in Santa Cruz Cirque du Soleil is poised to pitch its tent in the capital city of Santa Cruz next year, marking the company’s first ever visit to the Canaries. The circus troupe will stage nine performances of Happiness, a high-energy acrobatic show from 13-20 January.

Tenerife From The Treetops Las Lagunetas, Forest Park Tenerife, is the newest outdoor adventure park on the island. The park incorporates two tree-climbing circuits – one for families and one for the more adventurous - reaching up to 80 metres in height and featuring 30-metre-high wooden platforms, as well as ziplines that stretch for 200 metres.
For agents The Tenerife Tourism Corporation runs an online training site for agents called TenerifeXpert. The site contains training modules that agents need to complete to become a fully-fledged Xpert, information about the destination and travel incentives to encourage travel agents to visit the island. The tourist board is currently in the process of updating the TenerifeXpert scheme so watch this space for news about the new-look agents’ programme. tenerifexpert.com Prestige Holidays has teamed up with the Tenerife Tourism Corporation to hold a series of roadshows in July. Although dates and venues have yet to be confirmed, the roadshows will take place in Luton, Heathrow, Gatwick and Southampton. News in brief Prestige Holidays has seen an increase in bookings for adultsonly, all-suite property, the five-star Grand Hotel El Mirador in Costa Adeje in Tenerife. The operator offers seven nights’ bed and breakfast departing in June from £843 per person including flights and transfers. CLC Holidays, which has a number of properties in Tenerife, has launched to the trade.The focus of the new brand, CLC Holidays is to package holidays at its sister brand CLC World resorts and also provide agents and homeworkers a gateway for booking CLC accommodation. The operator has two self-catering resorts in Tenerife: Paradise in Costa Adeje; and the Sunningdale Village in the Golf del Sur area. Classic Collection Holidays has introduced the Hotel La Siesta and the H10 Conquistador to its Tenerife programme for 2012.
Prices lead in at £853 per person for seven nights’ all-inclusive at the H10 Hotel Conquistador including flights and transfers. Cosmos has added the five-star Hotel Sandos San Blas in the Golf del Sur region and the four-star, adults-only all-inclusive Hotel Arenas del Mar. Prices lead in at £539 for seven nights at the Arenas del Mar in El Medano. Jet2.com has increased its seat capacity to Tenerife by 15.7% for this year with new flights from Glasgow, Newcastle, Leeds Bradford, East Midlands, Blackpool and Manchester Airport. Thomson has started a complete refurbishment of its Hotel Los Gigantes to prepare it for its inclusion in the Thomson Couples collection from November. appy kids, happy parents the saying goes, so choosing the right holiday destination that will keep the children content from dawn ‘til dusk is often the missing piece to completing the summer holiday jigsaw. Tenerife provides all the solutions to the puzzle with plenty of family-friendly resorts that have top-notch kids’ clubs with age-appropriate activities for toddlers all the way through to teens. When families decide to venture out of their hotels, the island is like one big playground: from miles and miles of long, sandy beaches and volcanic landscapes to whale-watching excursions and water parks, there’s never a dull moment. Water parks Have you ever ridden the Dragon or taken on the Giant? If the answer’s no, then it’s time you checked out Siam Park, the Thai-themed water park on the road to Costa Adeje. The park boasts some of the most exhilarating water rides in Europe. These include: the Vulcano, a fourperson bowl slide with a laser inside that produces an image of a dragon; a ProSlide Tornado; and the Tower of Power, a transparent slide that sends

riders through an area with sharks and stingrays. For the less-daring members of the family, there’s the Lost City of waterfalls and gentle slides, the Mai Tai lazy river and the Wave Palace. Aqualand, close to the resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa las Americas, boasts all the thrilling rapids, bowl slides and kids’ water playgrounds, but it is also home to a dolphinarium with 11 dolphins that perform shows throughout the day. Loro Parque Everyone knows a family holiday isn’t the same without a day at the zoo, and Tenerife has an impressive zoological experience. Loro Parque is home to orca whales, sharks, sea lions, dolphins, iguanas, tigers, monkeys, penguins and the largest collection of parrots in the world. For 2012, there is a new host of creatures, including white Bengal tigers and baby meerkats. Pueblo Chico If your kids adore Legoland’s miniland then they are guaranteed to fall in love with the Pueblo Chico theme park – a miniland version of the Canary Islands. Volcanic adventures Fire up the kids’ imagination with a trip
to Teide National Park, home to the volcanic landscape that is Mount Teide. Make sure you tell your clients to take their children up to the summit of the mountain in the park’s cable car but they must book ahead to get a permit. Whale and dolphin-watching tours These days, thanks to the internet and a number of child-focused, wildlife programmes, kids are knowledgeable and intrigued about the planet and what lives on it. So what better way to experience wildlife than a boat excursion to see whales and dolphins that live just off the south coast of
Attraction World Theme park specialist Attraction World has introduced four-day passes to two of Tenerife’s major family attractions – Siam Park and Loro Parque. A four-day ticket to Siam Park costs £78 for adults and £67 for children aged between three and 11 and can be used at any time over a 14-day period. Meanwhile, a four-day pass to Loro Parque costs £64 for adults and £54 for children aged six to 11 and also can be used at any time over a 14-day period. t’s not all sun, sea and sangria in Tenerife, you know. The island’s interesting landscape, temperate climate combined with trade winds from the Atlantic make the island a haven for holidaymakers who can’t bear to chillax on a sunlounger for longer than 15 minutes. Tenerife is an island of challenging altitudes, so it’s the perfect place for health and fitness enthusiasts to train with varying heights from sea level to 3,718 metres – and all just within four hours of the UK. From hiking up Mount Teide to reeling in Atlantic blue marlin on a deep-sea fishing trip, here is a round-up of what adrenaline junkies can get up to on the island to get their fix. Walking/hiking Tenerife is home to the volcanic landscape that is Mount Teide, which, at 3,718 metres above sea level, also happens to be the highest peak in Spain. The volcano and its surrounds comprise the Teide National Park, which is now a popular tourist attraction. There are more than 600 miles of

approved nature trails around the dense laurisilva forest and grazing area near Mount Teide. Those who want to ascend to the peak by foot can find the path that leaves from the area of Montaña Blanca, next to the road. The easier option is to save on the shoe leather and jump in the cable car, which runs every day. Access to the peak requires a permit which can be applied for via reservasparquesnacionales.es Other options? The Anaga Rural Park offers a network of footpaths and so do the Teno Rural Park and the Chasna footpath. For a really spectacular hike, try the Barranco de Masca in the Masca Gorge. Climbing Tenerife ticks all the right boxes when it comes to landscapes suited for climbing. That volcanic terrain, with its crevices, walls and ledges, provides the perfect canvas for climbers of all abilities. While there are a number of routes, the most established are Barranco de Arico and Cañada del Capricho in the heart of the Teide National Park.

Activity holidays Mountain biking If you have clients who are keen mountain bikers, but have never taken their passion for travelling on two wheels overseas, why don’t you suggest they combine a holiday with their hobby and head to Tenerife? Its variety of landscapes, from mountainous and volcanic to dense, almost rainforest like in the north, provide a variety of descents. The Corona Forestal around Teide National Park and the hills around La Esperanza boast some of the best cycle paths and offer tracks to suit beginners and the more experienced. The Mercedes and Anaga mountains in the north have more challenging routes. Star-gazing Inspired by the Wonders of the Universe? Then Tenerife is a great place to find out if you know your big dippers from your orions. The island’s clear skies have made the island the home of the International Astrophysics Institute with various observatories and telescopes. In fact, Tenerife is the home of the largest European solar telescope, GREGOR. The best conditions for star-gazing can be found in the Teide National Park and there are a number of guided stargazing excursions for visitors to the island. Water sports The trade winds from the Atlantic that make the island a desirable temperature all year round also create the perfect conditions for surfing in all its forms. Slaves to these disciplines head to the surfing capitals of El Medano and El Cabezo in the south of the island. These two beaches are among the most important on the European circuit when it comes to windsurfing competitions. El Medano is more suited to sailing, and over recent years, has carved out a niche as the kitesurfers’ paradise.
Scuba diving If your client is keen to get up close to marine life, Tenerife is a great place to start their diving days, without having to fork out for a flight to far-flung destinations. There is a network of diving centres around the island that cater for all levels from beginners to advanced divers. Whale and dolphin watching Are you under the impression that to spot a whale or two, you have to splash out on a holiday to a long-haul destination? Well, think again. When it comes to seeing these magnificent mammals in their natural environment, Tenerife is a great place to head to as there are colonies of pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins that can be observed all year round.

From its historical quarters to its popularity with the ‘in crowd’, Tenerife can provide a holiday to suit any tastes
W
hile its temperate climate makes Tenerife the perfect beach holiday destination any time of year, there is a lot more to the Canary isle than its sandy beaches, turquoise seas and volcanic landscapes. Culture vultures Tenerife capital Santa Cruz is stacked full of Spanish charm with buildings, squares and cobbled streets that house a number of historical treasures. These include: the Iglesia de la Concepcion church, which was first built in 1500 and was the centre of the original town of Santa Cruz, which until 1859 was just the port for the nearby town of La Laguna. Other must-see sights include: the Iglesia de San Francisco church, squares such as the Plaza Príncipe de Asturias or the Plaza de La Candelaria and the town market Nuestra Señora de África. A visit to Tenerife isn’t complete without taking in the iconic Auditorio de Tenerife in Santa Cruz, The auditorium has become an architectural symbol of Santa Cruz, due to its impressive profile. To get the real feel for the building, take in one of the performances in its packed programme of cultural events. Another impressive building in Santa Cruz is the Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA), which is the cultural heart of the city. When you are heading out of the city, head to Puerto de la Cruz to indulge yourself in the island’s botanical gardens. Originally, conceived to house the flora bought back from the Spanish colonies of South and Central America in the 18th century. Other locations on the culture check list include San Cristóbal de La Laguna, the vibrant university town, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. La Laguna is perhaps the most historic city on the island and was originally the capital. Points of interest are that it is packed full of tiny cobbled streets that house gems of Renaissance architecture, it was the first city in the world built on a geometric grid, and since its World Heritage status, a number of the city’s buildings have undergone a restoration. Gastronomy While Michelin-starred restaurants don’t spring to mind when people think about Tenerife, the Canary isle is starting to establish itself as a force to be reckoned with gastronomes. The restaurants on the island specialise in simple yet delicious, traditional dishes that use fresh locally-produced ingredients that the island has a good reputation for such as potatoes, tomatoes and bananas. Tenerife boasts a wide selection of restaurants, varying from high-end outlets offering full-on, fine-dining experiences to rustic eateries. Several renowned Spanish chefs are also helping to raise

the profile of the island in the foodies arena by offering innovative dishes on menus of restaurants that specialise in fine dining. Wildlife and nature Tenerife lays claim to having some of the most varied landscapes in the world. From the laurisilva subtropical forests of the north to the desert volcanic moonscape in the centre of the island, Tenerife has an environment that has plenty to offer keen nature enthusiasts, who love nothing more than to explore their surroundings. The right accommodation is also key to attracting the shabby chic jetset, and while Tenerife has its fair share of five-star resorts, it also has a number of boutique hotels in Garachico, Santa Cruz and Costa Adeje that ooze style. Nightlife is also a big part of being hip and trendy, and Tenerife doesn’t fall short in that department with an abundance of restaurants, bars, pubs and night clubs.

Health and wellbeing The days are long gone when the menus at hotels spas were limited to a few beauty treatments and the odd Swedish, or Thai, massage. Health and wellbeing holidays are a big growth industry now. No longer just something to pass the time on holiday, clients pushed to the brink of exhaustion by modern-day life looking to soothe away their stresses and strains on holidays that will get their mind, body and spirit back on track. Spa resorts in Tenerife, have stepped up a gear in terms of the treatments they offer by making the most of the island’s natural source of volcanic minerals and aloe vera, as well as tropical fruits, which are often used in exfoliation treatments. While massages and beauty treatments are to be expected, spas in Tenerife are now offering a wide range of programmes that incoporate holistic relaxation methods from the east including yoga, pilates, meditation and ayurvedic treatments.
