NATURE TRAIL...The Saint Lucia Tourist Board took ten agents on its last Nature and Adventure fam of this year to experience some of Saint Lucia’s activities including diving, jungle bike riding, zip-lining and deep-sea fishing. Pictured enjoying the sights of Jade Mountain are, from the left: Chelcie Lewis, Saint Lucia Tourist Board; Claire Wardle, Holidays Please; Jo Eggleton, Virgin Retail; Floyd Walcott, Sackville Travel; Lucie Dupe, Cathedral City Travel; Neil Jones, Westgate Travel; Cullum Andison (right centre - at the back); Chris Pereira, Trailblazer Travel; Lucy Ellis, Touchdown Holidays; Melissa Robilliard, Bath Travel; and Caroline North, Thorntons Travel. Fewer than 5% of pax want in-flight mobile & internet access A NEW survey from Fly.com (owned by Travelzoo) has revealed that despite almost daily claims from airlines that they are working to improve in-flight connectivity for their customers, fewer than 5% of travellers think that such services are a good idea. The survey of more than 1,300 frequent travellers highlighted passengers’ disinterest in onboard technology and revealed that more than 30% of people would actively avoid travelling with an airline that offered such services. The main objections to having onboard access to telephone and internet services were said to be the potential annoyance of people talking loudly on phones mid-flight and the desire to be uninterrupted by emails and social networking sites whilst

travelling. It was also revealed that more than 62% of travellers remain concerned about the safety risk posed by the use of mobile phones whilst onboard, despite reassurances from airlines regarding the safety of said services. The company’s general manager, Aaron Ritoper, said: “These results really highlight the perception UK travellers have that connectivity on flights could be more of an interference than an enhancement. We believe this perception will change as services are introduced, given that people already enjoy wireless connectivity when commuting by train. Naturally airlines will need to ensure appropriate measures are in place so that people respect other passengers’ space and keep their communications discreet.”

Poll reveals three-quarters of cruisers suffer “cruise-blues” NEW RESEARCH from BonVoyage.co.uk has revealed that British cruise passengers experience feelings of postholiday sadness after returning to shore from a cruising holiday, more so than when returning home from a ‘dryland’ holiday. A total of 1,283 British holidaymakers were polled, each of whom had been on a cruise and a dry land holiday. When questioned about their overall holiday

www.travelbulletin.co.uk

experience, a total of 76% said they felt ‘sad’ for their time onboard to be at an end, whilst only 3% admitted they were ‘happy’ to leave the ship. When respondents were asked the same question about the last ‘dry land’ holiday they took, a total of 58% said they felt saddened to return home; almost a fifth less than those who admitted to feeling sad when returning from a cruising holiday.

CTC launches winter campaign THE CANADIAN Tourism Commission is asking ‘What type of winter personality are you?’ as part of its winter campaign. The campaign response is being driven to a microsite featuring information on Signature Canadian winter experiences linked to travel offers/packages from industry partners. Consumers can ‘friend’ Canada and find out if they are a Polar Bear with cubs, a Snow Hare or a wolf - to determine their canadian winter personality and identify the type of winter holiday that might suit them. The Facebook campaign also offers ten branded Canada iPads as prizes to those entering the competition. The CTC’s managing director UK, Rupert Peters, said: “Canada is a four season destination and this campaign is created to highlight the delights and charms of a Canadian winter. It is not all about skiing and boarding - we talk about the great Quebec Winter Carnival, the Niagara Ice Wine Festival and dog sledding in Manitoba. Unlike in the UK, just because it snows life doesn’t have to stop - Canada embraces winter full on and we want the British to come and be enthused by what we have to offer in a pristine winter wonderland.” For more information visit www.canada.travel

MOVERS ● Great Rail Journeys has appointed Karen Kundi as its

Notes from . . . n o t n a m r No IRST OF all, I would like to thank everyone who sent me cards, flowers and phoned me after hearing that Mum had died --in hospital – it has been a horrendous month or so but at least I can imagine her up there now with her memory back and having a nice glass of wine! All the articles I have read in the papers about the elderly and loss of dignity in hospitals seems to be true. I would dread to think how Mum would have been if she had not had my brother and I going to the hospital daily and taking her treats in to get her to eat. Nurses just don’t seem to have the time to ‘care’ any more it all seems to be report writing etc. At least she had a great night at the Yorkshire Ball in July. What can I say about floods in Thailand, Italy, Benidorm and Portugal and earthquake in Turkey. It really is beyond belief! It was amazing though to see the two-week old baby being brought out of the rubble. We are not getting any relief from global disasters. I have never known anything like it in my 35 years in travel. Joanne has gone to Portugal for a week – she went from Leeds Bradford Airport with Jet2holidays and spent a couple of hours on the runway because of all the torrential rain and strong winds at Faro airport. At least Jet2 made an effort instead of just letting everyone sit and get grumpy. The pilot said if any kids wanted to go up and look in the cockpit they could (and some big kids as well I would imagine!) I think that is excellent customer service and PR. Most of those kids will be telling everyone about their visit to the cockpit more than their holiday I would think, so well done Jet2holidays. I love watching Joanne Lumley and her trips to Greece she is always so enthusiastic and makes people want to visit where ever she goes. I must admit I love watching travel programmes and really do enjoy the ones where people are shown various properties to buy abroad – I could just about live in any of the properties shown!

They said what?! WTMnews AITO hosts ‘State of Independent Travel Agents and Tour Operators’ seminar AITO TOUR Operators and Specialist Travel Agents are set to address what is required for travel companies to stay independent and in business at a seminar– held from 11:00 to 12:00 on November 10 at the North Gallery (room nine). Chaired by AITO’s chairman, Derek Moore, the ‘State of Independent Travel Agents and Tour Operators’ seminar will look at how independent companies can compete successfully with the collection of specialist tour operators now held within the big boys’ portfolios. The seminar will feature the speakers Oliver Broad, chairman of AITO Specialist Travel Agents and director of Robert Broad Travel; Peter Traynor, general manager of Collette Worldwide Holidays and Gemma Antrobus, managing director of Haslemere Travel and AITO Agents’ panel member. The seminar is open to AITO and non-AITO members, with attendees invited to ask questions and contribute thoughts. Moore said: “With the soon-to-be loss of Co-op from our High Street and the rise of the Thomas Cook brand, the independent status of travel companies is increasingly important. This important seminar will look at exactly how independents can survive and prosper when competing against the ‘big boys’ – including delivering the best standards of customer service and offering the highest quality, often unique, holiday experiences.”

InBrief

WTM embraces social media revolution WORLD TRAVEL Market is for the first time reaching out to the global online travel community with the launch of a new travel blog, a number of social media webinars and an extensive social media programme taking place during the exhibition. The event’s Social Media Programme has been designed to connect with the people and companies that make up the online travel community, to encourage interaction yearround and especially during this year’s event. The World Travel Blogspot encouraged travel companies and individuals to share, tweet and comment and covers travel related topics of interest, drawing on WTM’s content and official programme of events. WTM has also identified a demand within the travel community for education on how to develop, launch, manage and measure effective social media campaigns. The paid for

social media webinars will feature an underlying theme of ‘Social Media Business Class – how to future proof your travel business’. During the event, an extensive programme of social media activities have been planned to educate and engage participants with highlights including a two-day Social Travel Market (STM) taking place on Wednesday November 9 (North Gallery Room 10) and Thursday 10 (North Gallery Room 4/5). The STM will be made up of competitions, keynote speeches, panel debates and practical workshops covering a range of topics such as the ROI of paid travel blogging; Video – your most important social media tool?; The Perfect Travel Tweet; and How to supercharge your blog. STM (@socialtrav) is free to attend for WTM visitors. For the full event programme including dates of sessions and timings visit www.wtmlondon.com/event programme

Networking will now take place as a one-hour session before the exhibition opens on November 7 from 09:00-10:00 in Platinum Suite 3 and 4. ● WTM is poised to benefit from a number of transport improvements including a 50% increase in Docklands Light Railway capacity. Other improvements include a new platform at Canning Town Station to help ease congestion. ● WTM has launched a free mobile app, available to download to all major smart phones. It includes a number of features including registration for the event, real-time news, twitter feeds, videos, photos from the exhibition floor, exhibitor and seminar listing and a bespoke personal event planner and route finder. See www.wtmlondon.com/app

THIS YEAR’S event World will focus on the emerging BRIC economies with its first dedicated headline session on the travel and tourism potential of Brazil, Russia, India and China. Last year’s event highlighted the tourism development in the BRIC nations in an inaugural World Travel Market 2010 Industry Report. The Report – which polled 1,300 WTM exhibitors and buyers from the Meridian Club as well as 1,000 UK holidaymakers – revealed almost half of the industry see the BRIC economies as one of the biggest growth opportunities of the next five years. Furthermore, almost one in three said the BRIC tourism potential is the biggest opportunity of the next five years, with a further 55% stating the business conducted with the five nations had a positive impact on their businesses over the past 12 months. Exhibition director Simon Press said: “The BRIC economies will play an ever-increasing role in the future of the travel and tourism industry. The desire by the people of these countries to travel abroad as well the growing interest of tourists to visit these countries means they will be at the forefront of decisions made by the industry’s leading organisations. “Brazil hosting the 2014 World Cup followed quickly by the 2016 Olympics alongside Russia wining the 2022 World Cup demonstrates the growing trends towards these nations.” The session takes place on Wednesday November 9 in Platinum Suite 4.

Lithuania capitalises on increasing interest and visitor growth THE LITHUANIAN Tourist Board (LTB) reports that interest in the destination has "rocketed in 2011", thanks to Vilnius hosting the AITO and AITO Agents’ overseas conference earlier this year, and the tourist board is looking to capitalise on the increasing interest in the destination by highlighting its diversity at WTM. The LTB's director, Augusta Jaudegyte, said: “Lithuania has seen a tremendous growth in visiting tourists this year – a rise of 25% in the first half of 2011 (770,000 visitors in total from around the world), compared with 2010. This includes the number of UK visitors rising by 12.6% in the first half of this year compared with 2010. “This interest has been reinforced by events such as the AITO and AITO

Agents’ overseas conference. The feedback from the conference speaks for itself - more than 80% of the tour operators and agents in attendance said that Vilnius exceeded their expectations and more than 25% that had not previously sold Vilnius would do so having seen it for themselves. “We’re delighted to be exhibiting once again at WTM, to reinforce to the travel industry what makes Lithuania such a fascinating place to visit – a wonderfully diverse destination, from the Baroque and Gothic architecture of Vilnius to the stunning forests, lakes, coastline, castles and exquisite cuisine. “We’ll be revealing the latest news and inspirational holiday ideas in the country and are particularly excited to

have the Mayor of Vilnius on our exhibition stand to meet with operators and agents.” The Mayor of Vilnius, Arturas Zuokas, is set to attend this year's event on Monday November 7 to discuss the destination’s pledge for greener living, including his plans to achieve Vilnius’s goal to become a world leader by offering residents and visitors the most eco-friendly environment. Meanwhile, the first 50 travel agents to visit the stand on November 9 and 10 will receive a goodie bag filled with amber gifts from the country. Slovenian tourism in 2011 has exceeded its expected growth THE SLOVENIAN Tourist Board (STB) has announced a new strategy for the development of Slovenian tourism for the period 2012-2016. recorded in the first seven months of this year compared to last year. In July of this year 6% more arrivals and 4% more overnight stays were recorded compared to last year, meaning that the STB has exceeded this year's plans for tourism growth and overnight stays.

WTMeurope Spanish Tourist Board announces another successful year for British tourism AHEAD OF WTM the Spanish Tourist Board has announced another great year for British tourism to Spain. Up until the end of August 2011, British tourist arrivals were up 8.8% year on year, cumulatively capturing the largest share (23.7%) of all international arrivals, followed by France (19.7%) and Germany (14.1%). During WTM, Spain welcomes a wide variety of exhibitor regions from Cantabria and Asturias in the North to Andalucía in the south, plus the Spanish Islands. The Canary Islands will be a key exhibitor for this year's event, focusing predominantly on the themes of volcanoes and nature, an important element of Canary lifestyle. The stand will incorporate multi-touch screens and Kinect technology, allowing visitors to discover the islands through interactive movement. CTO promotes new sustainability programmes THE CYPRUS Tourism Organisation (stand EM1100) will be highlighting a range of sustainability initiatives at this year's event and updating visitors on the new Limassol Marina. Work at the marina continues with the project’s exclusive Island Villas, the latest to be released onto the market. The marina, which will be able to accommodate all types of vessels from 8m to 100m in length, will be operational by the autumn of 2012. Meanwhile, developments to create a world-class sustainability programme on the island include six self-drive routes – the latest completed this year - helping to bring life back into villages and help rural dwellers tap into the tourism market; a new ‘Green Beach’ project which, as well as aiming to reduce litter and pollution, is encouraging the use of local materials for beach furnishings; and an initiative to incorporate minimum sustainability measures within the quality standards of hotels. These standards, to be implemented next year, will take into account initiatives to save water, waste reduction and energy conservation. Other new developments include a new Visit Cyprus app which offers an overview of the history and culture of the destination and practical guidance on how to get about and opening times of attractions. The park is one of the country’s most unspoilt regions and home to Lara Bay, a breeding ground for loggerhead turtles. WTMmiddleeast UAE and Saudi Arabia predicts inbound visits to grow during 2010-2015 THE UNITED Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia will experience some of the world’s strongest inbound tourism growth over the next five years, reveals research unveiled at the WTM Vision Conference. Euromonitor International Travel and Tourism Industry Nadejda Popova revealed Saudi Arabia and UAE will see consistent growth between 2010 and 2015. Significant infrastructure developments are also taking place in the UAE which are expected to contribute significantly to the growing number of arrivals to the country. informal gathering and an opportunity to learn more about the new venture from both Tim Henshall, managing director at Kamili and Kelly White, managing director at Geo Group. Created in 2006, Kamili has built a portfolio of small, independent and oftenowner run lodges, camps and operators across “Safari Africa” and the portfolio has been marketed under the banner of offering “five-star experiences at four-star prices”.

Geo Group was formed in the mid-1980s and since then has been providing marketing support to African destinations and tour operators. The company says that its greatest success has been in the development of tourism to Malawi, and recently its work with Swaziland has boosted interest in what was once a lesser-known and overlooked destination. Henshall said: “Geo Group combines effective marketing, excellent travel

trade relationships and a real passion for Africa. At Kamili, we are really excited about pooling our resources and expertise to provide an even stronger service to African destinations." KamGeo seeks to engage African destinations that would benefit from creative, strategic and tactical marketing services to maximise tourist visitors from Europe, especially within the UK. WTMafrica Win a fam to Kenya with Kenya Tourist Board AGENTS ARE invited to visit the Kenya Tourist Board stand for a chance to win a place on a Kenya fam trip next year. To enter, agents should complete the entry form at the stand (AF250). Meanwhile, the tourist board has joined forces with Just a Drop for WTM and will be launching an auction to raise money for the many projects that the charity supports. There will be a variety of holidays to Kenya to be won as well as a series of experiences. For more information email Kenya@hillsbalfour.com

SOUTH AFRICAN Airways (SAA) is sharing the front desk with SA Tourism at WTM and has recently taken delivery of new A330-200 aircraft, which have replaced an older generation A340-200s and are already operating more than 60% of the schedule between Terminal 1 at Heathrow and its hubs. One of the features on the new A330-200 is the new In-flight Entertainment (IFE) system, which has been integrated into the seat structure allowing more space and comfort for passengers in Economy Class. All seats in Economy offer a selection of on demand movies, TV shows and games.
