Carrizozo is just a 45 minute drive down from Ruidoso or a 55 minute drive up from Alamogordo. It is a scenic drive no matter what direction you come from. Nestled in the shadows of the beautiful Sacramento Mountains at the northern edge of the Tularosa Basin, Carrizozo is experiencing a resurgence as a growing ARTS Community. The town has over 30 artists who call it home and many of the old buildings have been converted into Galleries, Studios and smaller Cafes. Historic 12th Street, just one block off the main street or Highway 54 and behind the Wells Fargo Bank, has turned itself into the main thoroughfare for the Arts movement. Art Galleries, Shops, Coffee CafĂŠ and the town's Museum are all located on this street. The famous Painted Burros of Southern New Mexico are on the rooftops of many of the buildings. Malkerson Gallery 408, located right in the

middle of the block, is responsible for the birth of these burros. They have all been painted and adorned by local artists in the County. The Gallery has sold or placed over 300 of these burros over the last 12 years and you can find about 25 of them out alongside the streets or on the rooftops of the buildings throughout town to greet you on your visit to Carrizozo. The Gallery has about 10 to 15 of these painted burros for sale at any given time. The Gallery also features contemporary art, paintings, jewelry, sculpture and hand-crafted items and has its own Sculpture Garden as well. You are invited to view the work of over 20 Carrizozo Artists interpretation of "The Rose" in many different mediums and styles. Exhibit dates are February 17 through April 2, 2018. On April 6th, a new exhibit will be installed at The Gallery, in connection with the upcoming World Art Day on April 15th.

The new installation is called “Walking with Our Ancestors”. It is another brilliant exhibition that Gallery 408’s owner, Joan Malkenson, has constructed and it is really meant to compliment and support the underlying thoughts and values of World Art Day. She has aways been fascinated by the astronaunt’s perspective of seeing our precious Earth as a small blue dot from their journeys in outer space. From that viewpoint the astronaunts talk about not only the fragility and precious nature of our Earth, but also the connectivity of all Humankind on this Earth.

Today science and technology have helped us understand our connection to everyone around the world through our DNA. Come and enjoy. Gallery 408 is open Thursday through Monday 10am to 5pm with Sundays Noon to 5pm. Across the street from Malkerson Gallery 408 are two additional Galleries. On one corner is The Heart of the Raven Gallery that features pottery from 4 kilns in the back of the store as well as paintings and weavings, They also host a number of pottery classes that one can attend.

At the other corner, in the biggest building on the street, is The Tularosa Basin Photography Gallery with the work of over 40 photographers From the distance of outer space, towns and and all the photos being exclusively from New cities and countries loose their geographic Mexico. When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir does share the story of the genesis of the Black Lives Matter movement: however it does not do so through a thorough dissection of the movement itself. It does so by sharing the personal histories of Khan-Cullors, her family, and friends that illustrate why many in our country feel like their lives don’t matter.

Children’s Tumble & Blue by Cassie Beasley. Blue Montgomery comes from a family cursed for generations. The curse is the result of an ancient, selfish, unwise deal made between one of Blue’s ancestors and a magical golden alligator named Munch in Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp. As a result, half of the family (like Blue’s racecar-driving father) are destined to be winners, while the other half (like Blue) are fated to lose at literally everything they do. Every hundred years, there is one chance for someone in the Montgomery family to change their fate. When Blue’s father drops him off in the dead of night at the home of the grandmother he’s never met, he comes face-to-face with his large, mixed-up family, and a hero-in-training named Tumble Wilson who lives next door. Tumble believes that Blue needs her help to change his fate: “I’m here to help, and help is here!” Too bad Tumble’s efforts at saving others usually result in needing to be saved herself. They will face Munch in the swamp to try and change both their fates. Cassie Beasley’s new novel, Tumble & Blue, tells a story of friendship and explores weird family ties. But more than that, it tells a story of how we deal with the fates we’ve been given, and what happens when we dare to change our own destiny.

Page 19 "The Friendship Tea House is a culmination of everything my husband Bob and I have ever invested ourselves into over the years. Our creation is an old-fashioned tea party atmosphere that is inviting, quaint, joyful, fun, beautiful, and relaxing. It was designed to be a meeting place where girlfriends between ages of 4 and 104 can visit and play. So come and “Pour Yourself a Memory." Our Grand Open House is April 6th, the first Friday in April, from 10:00am-6:00pm. The Friendship Tea House is located at 920 Ninth Street in Alamogordo, NM (the corner of 9th and Hawaii). Bring your friends and we'll visit over a cup of tea and some cookies. Parties can be booked also. I, Barb, graduated from college with a BA in both Elementary and Early Childhood Education and later obtained a minor in Physical Education. After a few years teaching, I began a speaking ministry to youth and adults talking about the value of life, choices and consequences, and the power of forgiveness. There I discovered my passion as a speaker for over 30 years. I am excited that my passion for speaking can also be used as I host tea parties at the Friendship Tea House for women and children. Eleven years ago, we left South Dakota and moved to Alamogordo where Bob finished his military career and took to the life of retirement. He had had enough of mowing a continually growing lawn during the summer and shoveling a constantly snowed in driveway during the winter. He threw away his thermal underwear, sold the lawn mower, snow blower, ice pick and shovels to embrace a "wild hog,” the gentle climate, and life in the Chihuahuan Desert. It was his dream come true. Bob is the “nuts and bolts” foreman at the Friendship Tea House. My roots run deep in large family life and social structure with wonderful people I am blessed to call my friends. Therefore, when we moved, I knew I wanted to create a place where old friends could sit and visit in a beautiful environment and possibly even meet new friends. A place where little girls’ birthday dreams come true as they play dress-up with hats and jewelry, baby dolls, Barbie dolls, and play dishes. About a year ago, I saw a neglected little house for sale on 9th Street and realized its potential for tea parties. Shortly after, it became mine and the birth of a new dream began unfolding before my very eyes. The place I imagined for little girls and big girls to gather, laugh, meet new friends, and share with old friends was finally happening. The sky is the limit for the different special events that can take place at the Friendship Tea House. Some ideas are a bridal tea, new baby tea,

small wedding and reception, card party, business meeting tea, retirement tea or a farewell tea party. All parties are by reservation only. The tea parlor can seat up to 12 people. The sunroom can seat another group of up to 4. The playroom could accommodate up to six, if needed. In the near future, I plan on starting a Kindness Counts afterschool activity for kids. It will be a co-ed class with children learning lessons on etiquette and manners. Keep posted on my Facebook page or website for details. The Friendship Tea House is unique in that it features a play room stocked with a large Barbie Doll house and Barbie's, an assortment of baby dolls, and play dishes. The dress-up room has vintage and fancy dresses, with accessories, hats, and gloves. This room is in loving memory of my daughter, Johanna Kathryn, a precious gift of God, who died a tragic death and never got to celebrate a birthday. Children love this room and I love that it's their favorite room in the house. It's not just a place where friends get together to eat or drink. It is an experience where memories are made and dreams come true for little girls. Make a reservation to come and “Pour Yourself a Memory.”

Our specialty is raising grass-fed beef the old fashioned way, from start to finish on open ranges and grass pastures the way Grandpa did! No added hormones, steroids, or unnecessary antibiotics! Folks say our beef is tasty, tender, and juicy, just the way they remember it being in the good old days. The side benefit is that it provides a more balanced Omega-3 to Omega-6 ratio than conventional beef. This has been proven to be good for the ticker! Why Rosé Is the Perfect Wine for Easter Every Easter, there comes a spate of wine pairing pieces that traipse cheerily down the dual menu paths of ham and lamb. What to drink with ham? What to drink with lamb? (And then, of course, a subgenre of tongue-incheek pieces about what wines go with chocolate bunnies. Har har, indeed.) Well, fret all you want about whether your Grenache is going to bring out the particular gamey notes of your locally farmed lamb leg, but if you ask me the cardinal thing about Easter drinking is that it’s Spring. You know, rebirth, new life, happy fuzzy lambs gamboling in the fields (depending on your dinner plans, don’t think too

much about that), white clouds scudding through the cerulean sky, daffodils peeping from their beds, cold weather merely a memory now. Easter is the first real opportunity in the year to break out the rosé and feel properly seasonal about it. Partly that's for all the reasons just mentioned, but partly it's also because by mid-April all the new vintage wines will have arrived. This year for rosé that means the 2018s, fresh off the boat or truck, full of verve, juiciness, zing; and, I’d add, entirely adaptable to almost any kind of food. Even ham. Or lamb. Just not a chocolate bunny. Nothing goes with those.

The Alamogordo and Sacramento Mountain Railway was built as a branch line for the El Paso and Northeastern Railway. Construction began from the connection at Alamogordo, in 1898 to reach the Sacramento Mountain fir and spruce forests to the east. Sawmills were built in Alamogordo to mill lumber for extension of the EP&NE to reach the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. The railroad reached Cloudcroft, New Mexico, in 1900, where a lodge was built for summer tourists to enjoy the cool mountain air. Cloudcroft was laid out in several villages so tourists might avoid associating too closely with loggers and railway workers. The railway was extended from Cloudcroft to the small

community of Russiain 1903; and several branches were built to reach timber for the Alamogordo Lumber Company. Climbing from the Tularosa Basin into the Sacramento Mountain fault block escarpments required numerous trestles, switchbacks and grades as steep as 6.4 percent. The work was supervised by Horace Sumner, whose experience in Colorado included construction of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad and the Florence and Cripple Creek Railroad. The result has been described as a standard gauge railroad built to narrow gauge standards. It was one of the most spectacular railroads of the American west.

My Brothers’ Keeper Written by Merlinda Castro

I went about with my daily routine of getting ready for work. In the middle of doing my makeup I had an overwhelming desire for boiled eggs.. I thought to myself, hmmm how weird I don’t really care for boiled eggs, but I walked to the kitchen and put two to boil. As I was walking out of the front door with my eggs in my little lunch box, the thought came to me that toast with butter spread would be wonderful with my boiled eggs. So I went back into the kitchen and made some toast and took extra care in spreading the butter. On my way in to work I pass a Giant convenience store. As I was approaching the store I thought, orange juice would be great with my breakfast; (on a side note, I don’t really care for orange juice).

It started out like any other day. My alarm went off at 6:15 am and I groaned and moaned and rolled over and hit snooze. I slept another 15 minutes and off went the alarm again. I woke up stretched and said out loud, “ok get up, sleeping party is over”.. I then prayed, thanked God for another day of life and out of bed I sprung. (Ok maybe I am exaggerating perhaps drug myself out of bed).

As I walked in I noticed a man sitting on the sidewalk with his head down just staring at the sidewalk. He touched my heart, so as I grabbed for my orange juice I grabbed one for him too. The thought came to my head maybe that was the reason I was craving orange juice. I paid for my items walked out and said hey buddy, here you go. He looked up at him and his eyes filled with tears as he said to me, wow, guess God did hear me. I just asked him for orange juice right before you drove up. He thanked me

profusely. I felt blessed beyond measure because I had been obedient.

Page 64 I headed off to work and a block before I arrived to my place of business, I saw him. He was tall, 6 feet 7 inches to be exact. As I approached him I noticed his hair, long, down to his shoulders. It was white and matted with weeds. He had a long beard down to the middle of his chest and it was all over the place. His shirt was a tad small for him; it was a button down shirt which at one time had been white. It was dirty and brown and the buttons were missing and it was open down to his belly. His pants were brown and way too short for his long lanky legs. They were ragged around his ankles. He had on a filthy gray jacket. As I zoomed by him in my shiny red eclipse I heard the voice. “Merlinda give him your breakfast”. I pretended I didn’t hear and kept driving. As I arrived to the gate to my job, I heard the Lord say “give him your breakfast.” Out loud I said “Ugggg you always do this to me”.

I called him and told him I would need him to come in so that we could go over his application together. He said he would be back in a couple of hours. When he returned the other girl who I put my car in reverse and backed up to where worked with me asked if she could go to lunch early. Later she told me the smell was just too bad he was. I opened my window and stuck my arm out the window and said here this is for you (with for her to stay. a bit of an attitude I might add). He had to lean I told him that he would need to change his down to get the bag, he opened it and a smile contact; I explained to him that our corporate spread across his face. I grabbed a $20.00 from my purse and ran out the front door and yelled “Tom, hey Tom, wait.” I caught up to him and I handed him the $20.00 and said here you can pay me back after you get your first check. He stood still with the tears going down his face and he asked “are you sure? I’m sure I said and I walked back into the office. I walked in and my boss said “what that was about? Did God tell you to give him money?” I laughed and said yup. Over the course of a couple of months, Tom would come in every morning to give me updates on what was going on with his birth certificate. I would pack him a breakfast and go sit in the breakroom. I would make us both a cup of hot chocolate and we would sit and talk. One morning I brought him some clothes that I had bought for him. Tears immediately welled up in his of the week. I asked the guys at work if they had eyes and he said no one has ever spoken those seen him. They all said no. I was worried and on words to me, not even my mother. I said well you Friday at 4:00 pm he called. Every day when he would come give me his updates he would go out to a canister where the smokers in our building would throw their half smoked cigarettes. He would gather up a handful and off he would go. I felt sorry for him but my own personal convictions wouldn’t allow me to give him money for cigarettes or buy him any. One day in particular as I watched him, I thought to myself, you should just break your own rule, but I couldn’t get myself to.

take me to the hospital. I said yes Tom, where do you live? He gave me directions. When I arrived I saw an old run down house with no windows no doors and no roof. I was sure I was at the wrong place so I went next door to the men’s halfway house. I asked them if Tom was there, they said are you talking about the homeless guy. I said yes. They said “Oh; you’re the girl he talks about. Did you know that he borrows our hose and takes showers outside for you?” I said what?? They

Page 66 said yeah he borrowed some scissors from us and he cut his hair and his beard off outside. My heart sank, it was in October and the temperatures had been in the low 30’s. I said well where is he? They said next door, I incredulously asked, the house with no roof? Yeah that’s where he stays. I went back over to the house, I got out of my car and I walked over to the door. Tears are running down my face as the memory replays itself. There he was, lying on a futon mattress on the bare ground. He was lying on his side in a fetal position holding his stomach. I whispered “Tom” then ‘Tom’ a little louder. He heard me and whimpered “I’m here”. I said “come on Tom, let’s go, I’ll take you to the hospital” “I can’t” he responded “my stomach hurts too much. I am just going to lie here”. I told him that I would be right back. I went to the store and bought him every over the counter medication the store had for stomach aches. I went over to my sisters and made him some soup. I came back and spoon fed him a couple of spoonfuls. He was having difficulty swallowing. I went home and brought him blankets and pillows. I covered him up and tried to make him comfortable. I left him after a couple of hours with a heavy heart. The next morning at work guess who walked in looking spry? Tom!! He said he had taken all of the medicine I took him! On Thursday he didn’t show up. Friday morning I went to check on him; he was down again. I told him I would come get him when I got off work. I went and picked him up at 4:00 and took him to the hospital. They took him back and did an MRI. An hour or so later the Doctor came in and asked me to leave the room. Tom asked why I need to leave. The Doctor said it was because of what I have to tell you. Tom said, no she stays, she my only friend in the world.

they were going to put a feeding tube in. I left him around 11pm. The next day after work I came back. Tom did not have the feeding tube in. The doctor came in and said that they were unable to put the feeding tube in because he had cancer in his esophagus. He said they would not be able to give him any further treatment and that they would be releasing him. He said we would normally send him home with Hospice but he has no home. I said no you are wrong. God had this planned; he set up a divine appointment for Tom and me to meet. He’s going home with me. The doctor became emotional and went out into the hall. He apologized to me. I said no need for an apology. He asked, “Why? Who are you?” I told the doctor that I loved Tom, and that “he’s my friend, that’s why”. I took Tom home the next evening. He suffered all night. I stayed up with him. At 2:00am it got so bad I had to call the Hospice nurse in. She tended to him and left. I slept on the couch so I could hear him.

At 5:00 am I got up and made some hot chocolate. I went in and wiped his face with a wet wash cloth. I gave him hot chocolate thru a straw. He took a few sips and opened his eyes and The Doctor said “Ok, you have advanced stared at me. I kissed his forehead and told Tom stomach cancer”. Tom asked how long? “Maybe “I love you”. He said “thank you for loving me one month” the Dr responded. Tom stared off into and don’t worry, I will wait for you”. space. I went over and put my arms around him and we cried. They checked him in and they said He died a few hours later.

Page 67 I cried uncontrollably, I cried because I realized he had died and I had never shared Jesus with him. The hospice nurse came and she said there is something I need to share with you. Tom told us yesterday before he left the hospital that he couldn’t believe you loved him. He said “I don’t know what it is about that girl. When I first met her I told her if she was a Christian out on some mission to save me, I didn’t want to hear it. She said no worries; I am not trying to save you. I told her; don’t ever talk your Christian crap to me. She smiled at me and said ok. Do you know that not once did she ever talk about God to me? But do you know, I saw God, I saw God in her. Whatever God she believes in, that is the God I believe in. The God that she serves, that is the God that I serve.” I cannot tell you what that did for my heart. One day I will walk up, and there Tom will be sitting patiently waiting on a woman perhaps holding a cup of hot chocolate. There is so much more to this story, but we will save that for another day. I hope I didn’t bore you. This is a true story, it happened here in Alamogordo. I do not know who Tom was or why God brought him into my life, but one day I will know. God bless you and remember it’s not so much about shoving God down people’s throats. Love is a powerful thing. Be kind and love people.

The Lincoln County War | Part 8 |Billy’s Girl Paulita Maxwell was born around 1864-5 in the town of Mora, New Mexico. She was the daughter of Lucien Bonaparte Maxwell, a wealthy and respected landowner. The New Mexico border with Old Mexico was the haunt of the notorious outlaw, Henry “Billy the Kid” McCarty. Billy was popular with New Mexico’s Hispanic community and often relied upon its hospitality. He was known to be something of a ladies man and had a particular taste for latina girls. Paulita and the Kid are popularly believed to have been lovers and it has been claimed that she was pregnant with his child around the time that he was shot dead by Sheriff Pat Garrett.

As the legend goes, the Maxwells arranged for the pregnant Paulita to marry José Jaramillo, a prosperous sheepherder, to spare the family embarrassment. This version of events has been strongly contested. Its veracity is based on which date you believe for the wedding, sometime in January 1882, seven months after the Kid’s death, or January 14, 1883, eighteen months after his death. Paulita herself, in an interview done in the 1920s, denied having an affair with Billy the Kid but confessed to having been infatuated with him. Whether it happened or not, the romance with Paulita Maxwell has popularly been accepted into the Billy the Kid mythos.
