TOYTRAIN MUSEUM

TheToyTrainDepotgrewout ofahobbyandlifelongfascination withrailroading.Mr.JohnE.Koval, whosefatherhadworkedintherail yardsofYoungstownOhio,had beenamodelrailroadhobbyistand railroadenthusiastformostofhis life.In1986,withalittle encouragementfromhiswife, Merry,andsomehelpfromMr.Jim Bowlin,thenCommunityServices DirectorfortheCityofAlamogordo, Johndecidedtosharehispassion, hiscollection,andhistechnical talentswiththecommunity.

TheKovalsboughttheDepot buildingon17July,1987andhadit movedfromthegroundsofthe WhiteSandsMalltoitscurrent locationinAlamedaParkonWhite SandsBoulevard.Thisisathirdrole forthehistoricbuilding,whichwas firstconstructedinTorrance,New

Mexico,whereitservedasadepot fortheNewMexicoCentral Railroad.In1912,thedepotwas movedbymuletrain7milessouth toCoronaandputinservicetothe SouthernPacificRailroad.The baggageroomwasaddedin1929. TheDepotlikelysatidleformany yearsuntiltheConnorsfamily boughtthebuildingin1974and movedittoAlamogordowhereit housedDepotAntiquesselling antiquefurnishings.

TheKovalsandmany volunteersfromthelocal communitybeganputtingthe museumtogetherinMarchof1988. Themuseumhousesfull-scale artifactsoftherailroadfromits heydayinthe1920sthroughthe 1940s.Scalelayoutsfeaturea varietyofdifferent“toytrain” manufacturersandrunthrough scenesbuiltwithmaterials frequentlyusedbymodelers.The mostnoteworthydisplayisthelarge layoutdoneinHOor1/87thscale whichpayshomagetothe“cloud climbing”railroadthatranfrom AlamogordotoCloudcroft.Other layoutdestinationscarrynamesof localtownsincludingCarrizozo,and Vaughn.

TheParkTrainridewas originallyaddedasarevenue generator,butitquicklybecamea favoriteofresidentsandvisitorsto thecommunity.Thetrainbeditself Storycontinuespage36

waslaidwiththehelpof numerouslocalvolunteersandtakes passengersupanddownthelength ofAlamedaPark.

InJanuaryof2007,the AlamogordoMcDonald’sdonated thefull-sized,standard-gauge caboosetothemuseum.The cabooseprovidesvisitorswithan opportunitytoviewtrainmechanics up-close.Italsoservesasavenue forchildren’spartieshelpingto generaterevenuetosustainthe museumandprovideentertainment tothecommunity.

Ofthe6roomsinthemuseum, 5arededicatedtomodeltrains, staticdisplaysandoperatinglayouts ofseveralscales,includingmany itemsfromfullsizedrailroads.

TheToyTrainDepothashada homeinAlamogordoformorethan 30years.Thousandsoflocalschool children,communitymembersand visitorhaveriddenthetrain,toured themuseum,andvolunteeredto operateorrestorevariousportionsof themuseumandrides.Tomembers ofthecommunity,theDepotisa partoftheirlivesandtheirhome. Lookingtothefuture,theToyTrain Depotisteamingupwith AlamogordoChamberof Commerce,OteroCountyTourist promoters,theSmallBusiness DevelopmentCenter,andother membersofthecommunitytobuild onthesynergyoftheserelated functions.Together,theToyTrain Depotandcommunityof Alamogordohaveabrightand promisingfuture.

TherecenttragicdeathofR.S. Connell,aresidentofTularosafor whichJ.L.PorterandO.M.Talley areatpresentdeprivedoftheirliberty onaccountofcircumstances pointingtowardthemasprobable perpetrators,hasresultedinan

misleadingeditorialintheBeeof Omaha,Mr.Connell'soldhomeand thepresenthomeofW.J.Connell, fatherandattorneyofthevictim.

Onaccountoftheaffairhaving takenplaceinTularosaandthefactthat theTribuneeditor,amongother Tularosacitizensnotinterestedinthe localwaterdifficulty,hadbeen compelledtoresenthisactsofpersonal antagonism,wehavehesitatedto commentontheoccurrence.

Afewpoints,however,inthe aforementionededitorialdemanda wordfromus,whoknowlocal conditionstoremovetoasmallextent atleasttheeffectofthisunjustan uncalledforattackuponthecitizenship ofNewMexicoingeneralandof Tularosainparticular.

Ithasbeentheimpressionamong manyTularosaresidentsthatRalphS. Connellhasbeenthebrainsandthe causeofthepresentdifficultyover Tularosawater,butthiseditorialbeing similarintoneandaslackingintruth andreasonasformereditorialsin papersoutsideofTularosa,itisevident thatthekillingofR.S.Connellcould notsettlethewatertrouble.Thetalkof theConnellfollowersconcerninga "conspiracy"inconnectionwiththe recentkillingandthenecessityof

WewouldadvisetheBeeto investigatethe"peaceable" demeanorofthelateR.S.Connellat themomentofhisdeathandalsoon otheroccasionswhenhepassedthe homeofthemanuponwhomhehas madespecialattacksinthecourtsof OteroCounty.

Itsassertionthattheactof shootingConnelwas"evidentlywell knowninadvancebyothers"may betrue,asrumorsareafloatthatthe shootingwasknowbeforehandby Connellhimself,butthattheaffair didnotterminateaccordingto prearrangedprogram.However,we donotcreditthistheoryanymore thanwedothe"conspiracy"myth.

TheBee'suseoftheword, 'murderers"issignificantofa disorderedconditionofhemindof thewriteroftheeditorial.Hisidea, thatittakesmorethanoneNew Mexicantofireagun,couldbe eliminatedifhewouldvisitthestate andtownatwhichhethrowsmud. Hewouldgobacktodearold Omahaandenlightenedman.

Concerningthe"demands"of

thestateofNebraskathattheofficers ofOterocountydotheirduty,we wouldsuggestthatthatstatecleanits ownlinenandpunishitsown murdererswhohadtogethelptofire agun.Ifitcannotdothat,itmightat leastrunuptoOmahaandindict someofthoseattorneysforgraft. Therearenumerousothersways alsoforNebraskacitizenstoattend totheirownbusiness.

Further,astoTularosa's lawlessness,letitbeknownthatnot awaterrightownerappearedatthe residenceofJ.L.Porterafterthe killing,armed,whileseveralguns, pistolsandfullcartridgebeltswere seenonthefollowersoftheman whocamefromNebraska.

TheAlbuquerqueJournalgives afewpertinentremarksconcerning thismatterthatwillbearreproducing atthistime:

"NowastoRalphConnell.He wasamanwhoquarreledwithhis neighbors.Hehadbeeninmany lawsuits,usuallyoverpettymatters. Hewasonbadtermswiththe Porters,nearwhosehomehewas killed.

ThePortersarewell-to-doand law-abidingpeople,asarule,andit isinconceivablethattheywould

100 havebeenresponsible,inviewof thewelladvertisedquarrelbetween PorterandConnell,forConnell's deathatapointwhichnaturally wouldhaveplacedthemunder suspicion.

TheofficersofthelawinOtero countyandthepeopleofTularosa, nearwherethekillingoccurred,have beenintenselyactiveintryingto findthemanwhofiredtheshot.

Thebeliefgrowsthatitwas firedaccidentallybyahunterwho haskepthisidentityconcealed becausehedoesnowanttogoto prisonpendingatrial.

Inconclusion,wewould suggestthatallpartiesconcernedin Tularosa'swelfare,donowand henceforthbeextremelycareful aboutsettingonfootofmalicious falsehoodsorofpeddlingthemafter theyarestartedandletusget togetherforthegeneralwelfareof ourfavoredcommunity.Thisisthe correcttimefortheconclusionof thistown-destroyinglawsuit."

GranadoStreet,theTularosaValley Tribune,datedJuly11,1914,the followingdetailsconcerningthethe murderwerepublishedtoathen anxiousaudienceinmyhometown. Apparently,Porterwaswell-liked andaprosperousbusinessman.

True,Connellwasprosperous andenergetic,havingbecomethe PoultryKingofTularosa,buthe evidentlydidnothaveanysocial gracesandsufferedfromafatallead pillasaresult.Charmschoolswere stillyearsinfuture,butattitude adjustmentscameprettydangswift inthewaningyearsoftheTularosa frontier.

In2005JoanandWarren MalkersonopenedGallery408and SculptureGardenonTwelfthStreet. Joan,anartistherself,envisioned addingdiversityandqualitytoa growingartcommunityin Carrizozo.TheMalkersons purchasedandrenovatedseveral otherbuildingsonTwelfthStreetto actualizethatvision.In2014The TularosaBasinGalleryof Photographyopenedintheold1917 LutzMercantileBuilding.Itisthe

largestphotographygalleryinNew Mexico.

ArtistsPaulaWilsonandMike Laggfoundedtheirartsorganization calledMoMAZoZoin2010. MoMAZoZohelpspromotethe artisticexchangeofideasinan interactivefashionthatbrings excitementandaesthetic nourishmenttoCarrizozo.In2016 theypurchasedasuiteofbuildings onTwelfthStreetwhichtheynamed theLyricComplexu,now MoMAZoZo’sheadquarters.
