SAFETY : EVERY BODY’S BUSINESS Yes! Management of the Sterling Group is fully committed to implementation of HSE policies but we must own up to the responsibility for our own safety. As employees, you have the most to gain and really the most to lose thus our collective responsibility; to know, to participate and support management endeavors in achieving a healthier and safer environment in our operations. Sure ways of actively contributing to achieve the Sterling Group HSE goals: 1. Meet standards: Too often than not, employees take for granted health and safety practices that actually prevent injuries- adhering to safety rules, using personal protective equipment, good housekeeping practices are defined responsibilities of employees that go a long way in ensuring safety.

SAFETY QUOTE OF THE MONTH

Your safety is everyone’s responsibility, especially yours!

TIPS ON OFFICE SAFETY • Good housekeeping is essential- keep work station tidy, clean spills immediately and keep walkway clear. • Watch the loose cables they can cause tripping hazard, electrocution and when hooked on, expensive equipment can be pulled off the table. • Use common sense with chairs; they are not recliners or stools. • On the stairs: take a step at a time and keep one hand on the rail. • Shut off electrical equipment not in use and do not overload sockets. It could start a fire. • Watch out for avalanches if you pile "stuff" on top of filing cabinets. • Know the procedure for safely clearing jams of electrically powered equipment. • Do not tamper with electrical appliance without authorization. • Report injuries to the HSE department to prevent reoccurence.

HUMOUR CORNER

2. Get Involved: The ability to recognize hazards and making efforts to get them eliminated by filling stop cards, reporting unsafe acts and near misses should be a bigger part of our lifestyle. 3. Get help: acquiring training and making the best of trainings no matter how trivial so as to have a proper understanding of work processes. Do not forget: SAFETY IS EVERYBODY’S BUSINESS

Ensuring that we all go back home safely without injury

HSE PERFORMANCE IN OPL 280,2009

STERLING IN PICTURES

Management’s commitment to safeguarding the health and safety of all its assets and its regard for the environment was enshrined in the massive safety campaign in 2009. Its stance to ensure zero tolerance for all incidents paid off as zero fatality, zero disabling injury, no security issues as well as no spills were recorded during the operations. Highlights • Fatality • Permanent Total Disability (PTD) • Lost Time Injury (LTI) • Medical Treatment Case • Nearmiss

However, special focus should be placed on the countless unsafe acts and conditions which could have resulted in serious consequences but for good fortune – top on the list of medical treatment cases and near misses were bodily injury, dropped objects, working without appropriate protection and equipment failure. Simple measures such as consistent and proper use of personal protective equipment, adherence to safe work practices, routine equipment checks and good housekeeping practices will sure reduce the high occurrence of first aid injuries, electrical fires, equipment failure as well as malaria respectively as we progress in our operations. A major challenge in reducing the risk in our operations was the inactive approach to incident reporting by the workforce; only 126 stop cards were received throughout the year. A poor record! It is essential to emphasize the need for work force’s support in hazards identification in our locations and bringing to the notice of the HSE department with a view of mitigating them. A reward system where safety ambassadors are duly selected and awarded has been set in place to motivate the workforce to make safety a partner for life. Achieving and sustaining a better performance as recorded in 2009 requires contributions and tremendous discipline from all of us and we can do it.

CELEBRATING AN INJURY FREE OPERATION

IMPORTANCE OF REST AND RELAXATION Life is indeed busy - work, family, traffic and other commitments just eat the day away and leave you with no time to sit back and relax. However, rest and relaxation is very important. In fact, getting enough rest is imperative to living a healthy lifestyle. Side Effects of Not Getting Enough Rest Believe it or not, the body needs enough rest each night to function properly. Though the amount of rest, each individual needs may differ; an average adult body needs approximately 7-8 hours of sleep every night to restore the energy needed to handle all of the demands of living each day. Most individuals cut back on their sleep to pack more activities into their day; unfortunately, this runs the body immune system down making our bodies vulnerable to attacks by more viruses and disease. You only get sick and miss days or even weeks of all of those important activities. It has been scientifically proven that lack of rest and relaxation can really work a number on your mood making you a bear to be around. You become grumpier, less patient, snap easily and gradually become a health hazard to the environment and people involved with you. So, the next time you think it is a good idea to stay up late to complete a task or hang out with friends, think again. Of course, one night is not going to hurt you, but night after night of not getting enough rest really will. REMEMBER, YOU NEED TO BE ALIVE TO ENJOY THE FRUITS OF YOUR LABOUR - Imma Harris-Steve

That's Confidence.. TRUST: Trust should be like the feeling of a one year old baby when you throw him in the air he laughs... because he knows you will catch him….. That’s Trust….
