Phase 3: Extend the street grid where possible and appropriate in order to create a more permeable site. This will allow for better vehicular, pedestrian and cyclist network.

Phase 4: Take advantage of the land that has been liberated by the Expressway Fill Create a Greenway along the Matadero Canal and establish a ublic right of way leading to the Bay.

Phase 5: Continue to infill on the liberated lots and create a more fine gain fabric that relates to the existing conditions of the neighborhood.

Phase 6: Fill in unused or underdeveloped parcels along the retail corridor. Compensate for surface parking in structured facilities on the interior of the blocks.

THE URBAN INFILL PALO ALTO, CALIFORNIA DESIGN ISSUE The population of the San Francisco Bay Area is expected to reach the 9 million mark by 2035 according to recent projections by the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG).

The same report predicts a 1.5 million job increase to the Bay Area economy, largely in health, educational and other service sectors. The goal of this project is to test this hypothesis: Is it possible to find room for the Bay’s growing population without expanding the footprint of the urbanized region

and without compromising the living situation that individuals are accustomed to. This proposal will seek to accommodate the growing population at higher densities, with better integration of activities and access to amenities such as transit, schools, groceries, and other everyday lifestyle needs.

DESIGN SOLUTION This proposal looks at methods of repairing a separated area of Palo Alto near Stanford. Similar to other cities, train tracks divide the urban fabric, causing a break in transit networks and overall circulation. The fabric will be repaired creating a seamless

urban grain that takes advantage of underutilized land and surface parking lots. This not only adds much needed housing to this area, but allows the built wall to be maintained along primary corridors such as the El Camino Real.

habitat’s natural environment to be restored to increase the flora and fauna in this area. This part of California is apart of the Pacific Flyway which is a major route for bird species to travel. With the implementation of the berm, the new development along the water will be

protected from future flooding and will allow a greater variety of plant species to reside here. The Bay trail which will be inundated during heavy flooding will have a secondary path to maintain activity levels along the trail such as biking and walking.

ULI HINES COMPETITION UC BERKELEY DESIGN ISSUE: Downtown East , located near downtown Minneapolis faces great pressure to develop due to the transformation of downtown west, the heart and core of downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Eastern side of the city is located directly next to the Minnesota Vikings stadium, but with numerous derelict lots and an abundance of surface parking lots, great transformation has the potential to occur in the downtown East district. DESIGN STRATEGY: This proposal seeks to generate a symbiosis between Minnesota’s highest density of employment, a retrofitted historic mill district, and one of the only enclaves of affordable residences in the urban center. In order to maintain activities on non-game days, other amenities must be incorporated which will help generate foot and bike traffic in this area. The increase of housing and jobs will also boost the pedestrian life in downtown East, and will bridge the gap between the East and West parts of town. DESIGN SOLUTION By utilizing the natural land form, the team was able to design housing modules that would help maintain comfort levels of the inhabitant while addressing all of their basic needs. Different configurations of the homes allowed for natural resources such as wind

EASTERN MARKET METRO PLAZA WASHINGTON, DC DESIGN ISSUE: Located along one of the most heavily trafficked transit corridors in DC is Eastern Market Metro Station. Pennsylvania Avenue cuts directly through the current plaza causing a divide in activities and spatial quality of the two plazas. This project allowed the opportunity to re-think the physical plaza while linking it to other prominent features adjacent to the site.

DESIGN STRATEGY: In order to slow down the traffic on Pennsylvania Avenue and to link both plazas, they have been joined creating a safer atmosphere for pedestrians and cyclist. This will alert drivers that they are within a slow zone, which will allow the pedestrian to be the dominant figure in this area.

The center of the park has been transformed into an interactive art and sculpture park that is safe and fun for user groups of all ages. These interior green spaces can hold different events and transform to fit the needs of its users. By creating a more seamless plaza space, the goal is that it will further promote walk-ability and bike-ability in this area of the city .

DESIGN SOLUTION Due to the lack of N-S transit corridors, the proposal seeks to integrate the historic downtown Anacostia with the waterfront by providing more opportunities for interaction with this space. Visual corridors are created along each street lead-

eye to understand its destination. A wetland buffer has been created to preserve the habitat in this area and to protect these spaces from any future flooding.


HUNAGPU DISTRICT GUANGZHOU, CHINA DESIGN ISSUE: As the urban economy continues to develop at a rapid pace, a large number of the migrant population is moving into the city, causing the urban villages to have dual roles. The first role is the indigenous village community supported by the rental economy. The second role is maintained by the migrant population. Due to restricted available land, villages face great threat to undergo development which will disrupt its unique grain and history. The reality that these inhabitants face are various social problems amongst the local residents and the migrants workers.

Project Team:

DESIGN STRATEGY: To address the needs of both populations, a range of different social spaces were designed throughout New Stream Village. These individual pocket spaces specifically focused on the needs of the users, such as the children who would roam and play, or the elders who would sit under shade and play a game of mahjong. The structure of the village has been preserved in order to uphold the identity of this Chinese urban village. PROJECT TEAM: Ben Han Ja Young Kim

THE BRITISH EMBASSY WASHINGTON,DC The overall master plan highlights every section of the garden in its own entity. It allows one to visualize what the garden would look like during the spring time when everything is in full bloom, and helps one orient them self within these particular spaces.

The original design of the house and garden was laid out by Edwin Lutyens from 19271930, who was greatly influenced by his association with Gertrude Jekyll, a prominent British garden designer.

From this aerial view, individuals are able to see specific places within the garden such as the greenhouses, the rose gardens, and the perennial border. Each element within the garden serves its own specific function, but acts as one cohesive element to make this a historic landmark within history.
